Feb 27, 2020
Hello friends and welcome to another video. This week I'm buying a

custom

black

wedding

dress

. You can stop tweeting me now. It's happening! Now, as some of you may know, I am engaged, engaged, and a few months ago we went shopping for my

wedding

dress

and ended up choosing a really incredible dress, with some pretty epic medieval sleeves. "Look at that sleeve Ty!" There are still a couple of details up in the air, like the fabric and the final cut, but we said "Of course with the dress." And that dress will still be my wedding dress, but for a while I've been toying with the idea of doing a White Swan/Black Swan moment and having a second dress that I can wear for the party portion of the night.

So that's what we're going to work on now. Odile's dress, so to speak, or Mila Kunis's. Unless you think it's just a figment of Natalie Portman's imagination. That movie came out in 2010, I don't know why I keep talking about it. Now, the first question some of you will ask is: "Why do you want a

black

wedding dress?" Well, I wear black a lot. He started out as something of a theater boy, a stagehand. Yes, I was a theater kid. Nobody is surprised. And that predilection has now taken over my life and my wardrobe completely. So, a black wedding dress is definitely in my wheelhouse.

More Interesting Facts About,

i got a custom black wedding dress...

In fact, some of you were surprised when I chose a white dress. Now, my train of thought this entire time has been like... "If there's ever an occasion in my life to wear a white dress, it's this one!" And I really love the Juliet dress we chose, as well as the fabric we ended up choosing. However, unintentionally, the fabric we use will end up being quite heavy and a bit fragile. And, for insider information, Tyler and I are planning a somewhat complex choreographed first dance. So I definitely need some kind of second dress for dancing. So I thought, why not a black one?

The second question you may have is "Why

custom

ize?" Now, there are many black dresses in the world, but when it comes to choosing a second wedding dress, I want something that stylistically complements the first dress, but also doesn't overshadow it or stand out. it's too much. It is a difficult task. But luckily, during our purchasing process for our first dress, we were able to meet its designer, Stephanie White of Odylyne the Ceremony. And when she found out that she was looking for a black wedding dress to complement our Juliet dress, she was intrigued. And she thought it could be really fun to work together on something custom.

So I said “yes” to working on a custom dress and so our journey began. So to get started, we did an initial FaceTime call with Stephanie to plan the game. -Very good, hello Stephanie! -How are you? -I'm fine. So before this call, I started pinning things to a shared Pinterest board, as well as sharing Stephanie in our general wedding, just so she could get a sense of the vibe we were going for. Now, our overall wedding theme has evolved a bit. I initially described it as A Midsummer Night's Dream, in the fall, with Christmas lights and exposed brick, but it has grown into more of a Starry Night concept as we've added a lot of Moravian star decoration. moons and twinkling accents.
I've pinned a bunch of fabrics with celestial prints. Um, I don't know if that's a possibility. So most of the dresses that she gravitated toward were more on the whimsical side, with beading or sheer layers, you know, just things that had something ethereal about them. There's also a good amount of these sleeves that are almost like the opposite of a bell, where they're almost like, they're fluffy and then they fit around the wrist. Those are great too. So, with some of my ideas out of my head and onto Pinterest, the next question was how we were going to turn those pins into a dress. -What is our plan of attack?
So our next meeting would be in person to look at some of these sketched silhouette options that Stephanie had come up with from our conversation and then choose one of them. -That sounds perfect. -So, I'll see you... next week. -Alright. See you soon. -Bye bye! Now joining us for our sketch review session is Christy Baird, who some of you may remember as the owner of LOHO Bride, who helped us pick out our first dress and was also the one who linked us to Stephanie in the first place, and Everyone We were going to take a look at three different silhouette options.
So here's the first look, which we're talking about sleeves, because we know you're the sleeve girl. Yes, I am. I am a manga lady. Look 1 is a generally fitted silhouette that hugs the midriff and then begins to flare out below the hip with sheer, puffed sleeves and a deep, deep V at the neckline point. -Something to show off a little chest hair. Only a little. (laughs) Look 2 is somewhat similar to the first in that the sleeves are also sheer and voluminous and tight at the bottom. I feel like they both have that cool gather, which I really like.
But instead of being fitted, Look 2 has a bit of a cut in the waist to provide a more flared skirt. It also has a deep V, but it's covered by a sheer high-neck cape, somewhat similar to these styles Stephanie designed. Look 3 is very different from the other two. -Wow This one is giving you that princess and fairy tale vibe. -Yeah. This design has bare shoulders, a notch neckline and an A-line skirt. And there is that detail of the sleeve that plays with these dresses that I had pinned and also with this one that I tried on a long time ago, at LOHO, and I liked it , but in the end I didn't choose.
It would definitely give some drama, like they would definitely fly around a little bit, for sure. And honestly, after seeing them, I thought these three sketches were really amazing and reflected a lot of the things I had initially been painted into. (heh heh heh) But I had to make a decision. , and right off the bat, I had a couple concerns with option number 3. Specifically, that it wouldn't really solve our problem of needing a more practical dress for dancing. Since both shoulders are restrictive to my arm mobility, many of my girls who do it off the shoulder do it for the ceremony, because they want the photos.
Not many people who go the other way. as well as the cape sleeve situation, which I loved so much, potentially getting in the way. -As if you were like you were spinning around on your own sleeve -That could happen anyway, but, I feel like, let's not make it harder for myself. So we decided to reject dress number 3. Which left us with options 1 and 2. Now, the differences between these sketches mainly come down to the neckline, of which that of dress 2 is quite high. -I'm nervous about this kind of thing... -Cover up? -Yes, I don't know, no... cover up.
But I'm worried about... I don't know something. -Well, at the dance too. On the other hand... are you going to stay warm in something that tall? And in addition to any possible double chin, the sheer overlay would also obscure the deep V, which I actually thought might be a good idea to highlight, because it would mirror the neckline of my other dress. Then we would have that kind of continuity. Now, between the two skirt silhouettes, I usually prefer the flowier ones, but I was actually surprisingly drawn to the tighter style. -I'm depressed about that. You could be open to a moment of loot.
Absolutely, you see the butt. So between these two, which one feels like the favorite? So, all things considered, I would say that style number 1 has that practicality for dancing, with a dramatic touch, without things flying around, so it seemed like the perfect choice. -Strangely, I can't say I knew this dress existed, but I feel like this was in my head. So we decided to go for that one. -Amazing! Okay, this is good, I'm excited. And the next step after choosing our silhouette was for Stephanie's pattern maker to prepare a muslin version of our dress for me to try on. -Okay...so we're here, again, at Loho Bride, and today we're meeting with Stephanie and her pattern maker, Rita, to get a little "sneak peek" at the black reception muslin. dress.
Now, a muslin is essentially a prototype version of a dress that you can use to finalize the pattern before sewing it into the final fabric. -I can't wait to get into it. So I went into the dressing room to check on her. To be just a draft, I honestly thought the dress looked pretty creepy. And I think a lot of the details we had focused on in the sketch looked good in real life. I like this shape and I love the sheer sleeves and the V. I like a lot of things! Yeah! I'm very happy about that, because I like a lot of things too.
Stephanie and Rita wanted to make some standard fit modifications. Do you feel rock and roll? Definitely! So they immobilized me in different places. That's right! For my part, I just felt like we needed to make small adjustments to the silhouette, like making the waist narrower and maybe exaggerating the sleeves a little. So I told them to try it in terms of sleeve volume. Yes, go big and then go home. The other thing we needed to adjust was the length of the skirt. I wanted to make sure that we couldn't see too much of my shoes under the dress, so I'm wearing straight jazz shoes to dance...
But at this moment, there was a beautiful train behind me, and unfortunately, I think it had to go by the way. good of our tango. Yeah, I don't think we can have any trains. Otherwise, I think I'm going to stumble. Yes, or you'll trip over it. Someone is going to trip over him! But aside from those adjustments, we were excited about our dress. Awesome! I like it! Yes, really... I don't just like it, I love it! And with our final silhouette within our reach, it was time to choose our fabric. Spirit fingers, I guess. I don't know!
Now, originally, Stephanie had thought that something like a black velvet might be good for our dress, and she had actually found a couple of samples of different velvets, which she showed us on the day of our sketch review. I keep petting this one. I feel like this feels like... You're going to be petted. I know, though, we had already picked out a velvet tuxedo jacket for Tyler's wedding suit and I was a little nervous about clashing. So we took their samples to Tyler's tuxedo shop to compare them, and none of them really matched. Yes, I feel like unless it matches perfectly, it won't make sense.
Yes, no, I can't. And with velvet more or less rejected, Stephanie suggested we all go fabric shopping together so we could look at many different black fabric options at once and then make our choice. So one afternoon we came across two fabric stores on our itinerary: Rag Finders and Mood. Alright... So we're here at Rag Finders in downtown Los Angeles, ready to find fabric for our dress. Basically, Rag Finders is like a dead fabric emporium, meaning all of these fabrics are no longer in production. They are finished here and will not be manufactured again. I swear I have a dress from Urban Outfitters made of this fabric.
This could be that fabric. So if you find something you like, grab it and run! Well... pay first. But yes, take it, pay and then run. So here I'll meet Stephanie and Sarah, who works at Rag Finders, who will help us... Explore. Adventure. Search. Browse! Sail is a good word. She will help us navigate this place. I can hear them on the microphones. She was like, "Did we lose them?" A bit. A bit! Because it is big and labyrinthine. You could see me holding my eyeballs in my hands. I don't know. Seriously though, Rag Finders is great.
And there are many hidden gems there. Check out this blue camo print! I could make you a pair of joggers with that. You will look like one of the cheetah girls. And we decided to start our expedition in the lace room upstairs. Through a crack! As for the lace, we were looking for something with a semi-gothic feel without looking too tablecloth or too floral. You have to do this with the entire fabric, so you can see them. You can wrap me inside them! So cobwebs were in fashion. I like it because it's a kind of spider web.
And it's quite geometric, which I also really like. It's something evil! But there were no more fruits. Yes you're right. And it looks like a pineapple! Pine cones just make me think of Fibonacci numbers, which makes me think of 6th grade math. And Stephanie also wanted a fabric with some weight to it. I don't like it... Yes, no. I do not think. It's not thick enough for me. We need... we need a thick fabric here! Where is the meat? And after removing a bunch of bolts of fabric from the bottom... I don't know how to get in there... and then having to put them back where we found them...
I'm in for a joust! Get 'em up, Ty! I'm fighting with you. We gathered some possible lace options and then decided to head to another part of the store. Alright. Squeeze it, suck it, squeeze it. Suck it. A metaphor for putting on Spanx! But on the way there, Sarah saw one last lace. Now our first dress fabric is a scalloped bead patternwith a slight art deco touch. So she had been half-attentive to the scalloped patterns in the lace room. Wait, this one is really awesome! This one is really amazing! This is really amazing! So Sarah had done good.
Nice find! Sarah is the nightmare of fabric stories. (in mediocre Bane voice) I was born in the fabric store! Unfortunately, once we got it out (disappointed gasps) we realized it was too narrow a bolt to cover my body, so we didn't do it. But maybe we can take some inspiration or something? Yeah! Still on the hunt, we went down the stairs. Going through more mountains of fabric... Towards the jacquard area. To try to see if we could find something shiny or patterned with a kind of heavenly vibe. We ended up finding some shiny metallic fabric that could have been an option, but neither of us were really feeling it.
I think it's not right. Well. Here we go. I do not think. That's why we do it! And without finding a clear favorite... I mean it would be... TO THE RED!!! Ha ha ha!!! We decided to say "auf wiedersehen" to Rag Finders and head to our second destination: Mood, of Project Runway Fame. I try to remember all the things Tim Gunn says... I don't know, I think he just says "let's Mood!" Yes of course?! "Alright, time to go to Mood! Thanks Mood!" Yeah! Now beyond that, Mood is more of a standard fabric store with a wide range of options.
This one is kind of funny. Not for the dress, but just for life. So inevitably we found a lot of things that weren't going to work... With interesting patterns... Is it like a vaguely animal print? The most subtle cheetah print? Besides textures... Oh, there are feathers over here. Oh, there are a lot of feathers around here! But one thing Mood had plenty of were good shiny options. Oh, wow! That's really cute, actually! Now, I wanted some sparkle, but we had to be careful with the beads, because we didn't want anything that would snag in a dance situation.
Especially during this movement. The Buns-A-Rollin' where Tyler spins me around on the floor. And although we ended up finding a couple of good options... It's great! Yes, I don't foresee them falling. Stephanie had to secretly find a treasure in the corner, which she was eager to show me. Get prepared! Get prepared! Get prepared! I don't know if this is correct, but it was a sheer black fabric with stars embroidered on it. Oh, wow! It's pretty impressive! It's pretty impressive, right? That's pretty sick, guys. And while I had given up hope of finding a celestial print fabric like this, it was one of the things that was all over my initial Pinterest board.
And they're not like "stars" where they say, "Oh, they're stars." They are small abstract stars. Know? It was very different than all the other options we had considered... This is really good! But it was light, looked easy to dance in, and matched so many other elements of our wedding that it really seemed like a winner. I mean, of all the things we've chosen, this is definitely you. Yes, I think so too. I think this might be the one, honestly. I think it's also the first time I feel like this. Good!!! And having seen so many different fabrics, from velvets to pineapples to fire trucks, it seemed a little surreal to finally find something we loved so much.
Alright, this is pretty amazing. Is that a saying? Is that a thing? No, I don't think that exists!! So we decided to go for this one. I guess it was outright "gratitude mood." "Thank you, humor!" And with our material and silhouette chosen, it was time to put everything together and make an adjustment to our final fabric. Ready? And we were immediately pretty excited about how it looked. I love it! And with how he was going around. I was not ready. But I want to see it again. Okay, now there are a couple of things in this more final version that are somewhat new to the design.
Oh, wow! The first is the sleeves which were originally going to be made of plain black organza. But after Stephanie went home with our star fabric and hung out with it for a second, she suggested that we make the sleeve out of our fabric instead, but without the lining. I think it was a great decision to make the sleeves from the same fabric as the dress. We also changed the opacity of the bodice slightly to highlight our stars, which actually also matches the sheerness of the first dress very well. In addition to those changes, I was also quite pleased with the added volume in the shoulder area.
Plus the comfort on my butt. Sorry, I just moved right into your ass. Quick zoom on your butt. But it wasn't so comfortable that we couldn't dance a little. Let's get to work, right? Rolling butts sounds better. All details aside, I think this dress was, without a doubt, one hundred percent the right dress. I feel like this is like that for you and, you know, and, basically, we... did we do it? And I think we were all very happy with that. Completely! It's an extension of the main dress and I think it's stunning! Yes me too.
I love it! Now, as you can probably see over the course of this video, the process of making this dress took quite a while, and frankly, between this dress and our first dress, we've been working with Stephanie and Christy and all of their partners basically. all year. It's been a great experience meeting and working with them, and I'm so grateful that they were willing to let me get so involved in the design process. From the initial sketches, to the dungeons of Rag Finders. You guys are full of Gollum right now. You are literally finding the power ring in the dark.
I'm so excited about the two dresses we made together and I can't wait to show them to you in the next episode. So let's get down to business and get married. Thank you all so much for watching! And once again, thank you so much to Stephanie for making this beautiful dress! I'm very excited to see how.
