Choosing My Wedding Dress

Feb 27, 2020
Hello friends and welcome to another video. Today I'm going to buy my

wedding

dress

. No, this is not from Wish. Surprisingly. So, as some of you may already know, Tyler and I are engaged, engaged, engaged... And since January, we've been planning our

wedding

, which has gone pretty well overall. We have a great wedding planner who emails me probably once an hour. We have our date, our place and our photo booth. It seems like a low priority to have booked so far in advance, but I booked it and I'm excited. Now, one of the things you have to think about when you're planning a wedding is what the heck you're going to wear.
choosing my wedding dress
It's definitely an early step to take down, partly because with many wedding

dress

es, you're supposed to order them four to six months in advance, and also because the choice of dress can influence the décor, what other people are going for. to do. Wear, like, how you're going to do your hair, your shoes... Everything! So even though our wedding will be later this year, we will buy the dress now. And since I've been an avid watcher of Say Yes to the Dress since its inception in 2007, I thought it would be fun to film the dress selection process and produce our own episode of (well, not Say Yes to the Dress), because I don't think we can call it that legally, but you know, Choose My Wedding Dress™.

More Interesting Facts About,

choosing my wedding dress...

We haven't actually trademarked it, but let's do it anyway. As for exactly what I'm looking for, I have a few ideas. Like a lot of people (I hope), I've been pinning wedding dresses I thought were cool to a private Pinterest board for years, long before I met Tyler. So between that and a constant consumption of wedding content over the years, I feel like I've seen my fair share of wedding dresses in my time. And based on all that, I know what styles interest me. In terms of skirts, I don't think I want a super baggy party dress, but I don't think I want something super tight either. just because I want to be able to move, have fun and also eat.
choosing my wedding dress
So something loose or A-line would be ideal. As for the summits, I'm more open to different things. I'm definitely partial to long sleeves, but I don't want to be too close to other types of sleeves. For additional context, the 10,000 foot description of our wedding is like a mix of exposed and whimsical brick, so we'll definitely keep that in mind as we shop. Now as for color. I know there has been some demand for me to wear a black wedding dress, due to my generally dark wardrobe. But I'm not sure I want a black dress. I don't need to dress like pure white, I'm open to a beige or maybe a light gray or something, but from what I've seen, there are more wedding dress options that I like in lighter colors. colors.
choosing my wedding dress
And other than that, I feel like my wedding is the only time I would actually wear a white dress, so I want to do it. I'm interested in what I've been calling a Black Swan moment, where I wear a black reception dress, but that's not what we're buying this time. So, with all that in mind, my next step was to find a place that sold dresses to try on. Now, after getting engaged, I started looking at wedding venues and wedding dress boutiques in the Los Angeles area, and one store that immediately caught my eye was LOHO BRIDE, short for League Of Her Own, which is a boutique relatively new that has dresses from many unique designers.
I'm not sure they would say this, but I find a lot of their dresses to be kind of alternative and I definitely like them and after checking out their Instagram and the Instagrams of some of their future designers, I knew I really wanted to go. I went in and tried on some of her dresses and fortunately, after we got closer, Christy was left naked. The owner said we could go to her store, see what they had, and film our selection process there. Hi, I'm Christy. I am the owner of lo ho girlfriend, we are a store that specializes in hard to find designers that are not too saturated and we are excited to have you today for our visit to Lo ho.
I wanted to bring you. An on Raaj to give me some additional perspectives and opinions and also because I think that's just part of what you do with weddings. Oh, how to make people look at you. Yes of course. Greetings. So I was able to round up three of my five bridesmaids to attend our dress fitting session, all of them my close friends from college. Hello. I'm vivacious, I'm Sophie, hi, I'm Caitlin and we are three out of five bridesmaids. I feel like if there are three people in the world who have blackmail material for me, it's probably them, but that's okay.
Yes that's fine. I just fill them with champagne. Alright. I hope that in addition to exposing me, you can also help me figure out what I should wear on the big day. I think they're Birkenstocks, for sure. We should find bridal Birkenstocks, it's a small veil over the Also an additional side note as a fourth member of the entourage, Tyler, will also be on hand to purchase my wedding dress. I know it's not a very traditional choice, but I really wanted him to be there, not because I felt like I needed his approval for the dress I chose, but more. because it's a bit difficult to shoot a video and also buy your dress at the same time.
So the experience would be a lot less hectic if Tyler was there to help film on set. We are also editing this video together. So there's really no way around it. I'm not really superstitious though. I'm a little annoyed especially with the ghosts, but I'm okay with this one. So with Tyler's presence recognized, it was time to pick out some dresses to try on now in the boutique. They have like a room. That's packed. Yes, packed seems like the right word, packed with dresses. We like to have a bride do a first hami tour which instantly gets you excited and then we'll add some wild cards.
So go ahead, she starts touring the gallery and we. We'll go from there. And even though I'd done more than my share of instant harassment, I felt a little overwhelmed seeing all the dresses in person. What should I do? As if there were many dresses. Are you asking me. Yes. Now, one thing that was important to me was to try on a whole range of different styles just because I wanted to make sure I made the most informed decision possible. This is something great. Check it out. It's quite floral, which isn't usually my vibe. But I like it when the type of design flows beyond the bodice.
Oh my god, look at this queue. Okay, I said it wasn't my style, but then it had a giant train that's basically a cape, but for your butt, I definitely wanted to make sure I didn't try on too many dresses because people tend to advise against that, but I chose a few dresses that caught the eye. attention. my eye. That wasn't exactly what I expected it to see. Oh, this is something great. Look at this tie. Oh, it's a little spongy on the bottom. The thing is, I'm not married to the idea of being married, married to the idea of having a super white wedding dress.
So this nude is great. I like the nude and I like it. Well, let's talk about him. I found some of the unique dresses I had seen online. Oh my gosh, guys. Is that a cape? It's like a slender man, but an Interesting wedding dress. Yes. This is kind of like our why project, like a four foot long sleeve jean jacket, but a dress. Does it have an opening? Where does it open? It's like carrying arms. Caitlyn is confused. How do you dance or how do you like it? Plus our Ian Squidward dress. I also found a shorter sleeve option, but still long.
I wanted to try. This looks like the dress I'm wearing now, but it's a little simple but at the same time it looks like me, you know, dinging. On top of that, the bridesmaids also picked out a dress for me to try on. I like this one, I think it's definitely worth a try. It's quite heavy. My arm is getting tired, but I would like to try it on one more time. It's kind of like that nude color. You're going to say yes, send nudes, but that's just me. They made me try on something like Wonder Woman's head hanging around to wait quickly.
Was that the one we were

choosing

? What's going on, but that didn't reach the dressing room. Christie also brought out a dress for me to try on, so this is a little different from what we've been trying on, but I thought it might be interesting. Oh, he has all the It has pearls and it could be off the shoulder or it could be a spaghetti strap. It could be a fun little wild card for you. Yes, no, let's try it. Let's start with the combination. I'm open and with that we had six options to start with.
Hello. Are you going to choose a dress for me? Oh, I think that's too many broken roles. Now I will say that when I was first browsing dresses on Lajos Instagram I found a couple that I really loved, in fact, in the video of our desired wedding dress, I referenced them when talking about similar dresses. I was interested in that, but unfortunately they didn't seem to have them in the store when we went to do our Tryon, but they were still in the back of my mind. Particularly this one, but I really liked all six dresses.
I picked out and feel like they had some of the elements of the dresses I had left online so I was really excited to try them on. Okay, I'm going to get dressed now. Well. Yes. Alright, let's make dress number one, it's a train. As a tail, there is a lot of skirt, it has a lot of tail. So our first dress was this strapless floral dress from Dana and Elle. I love it and at the request of Friends, we are going to try a available available ready. It's always yes. So this is just a queen veil.
The dress has many things to do. Then it would probably go cleaner. Yeah, oh wow, this was actually the first wedding dress I tried on besides my desired wedding dresses and it was definitely the first veil, so I was a little taken aback. How do you feel as a bride? I feel like a bride. Yes, I definitely feel like a bride. I don't know if I feel like a bride. Yeah, I just really like this dress. I am very impressed with the cake. Yes. No, it's too long. Also as a side note if my dialogue sounds weird here.
It was very difficult to put a microphone inside the wedding dresses. So we actually put a microphone on the cactus in the corner. So please excuse the audio. Oh, and also the veil fell off a bunch of times because my hair is too straight. Besides those things regarding the dress itself. I feel like through this It's like something that interests me like a lot of problems, but I'm not sure I'm like a flower girl. You're going to need like when I see flowers in me. I'm not sure as a flower I always say there are dresses that you appreciate but if they're not yours, I feel like you appreciate this one But it's not the one.
Yes, then let's deflower you. That's a touch of champagne for sure. Glass and she's here. She's Here So with that we move on to dress number two, which was Nude Paint Splatter II, a Christos Costello A-line dress. Hello. It has an ombre blush shade. We tried another veil to match this dress. I'm trying with all my might to tilt my head so the veil doesn't fall. So I say hello, but it also ended up slowly falling off my head. It's a slow descent. My hair thing is just weird. We'll have to work on that, but I wanted to try this dress on anyway because I liked the 3D elements, the nude color and I also liked the idea of trying on a dress that had some of the volume of a ball gown without the like roundness or like the pouf from the waist, I think having the crinoline underneath is definitely fun.
But once it was on, it didn't feel like my dress anymore, I'm not sure. I like the tank top. It's too thick but not enough for my shoulders. I feel like if we're going to go with a tank style, I want it to be even thicker to avoid any kind of chicken wing type situation. You? Feel how my eyes go directly to your breasts. I don't know, but just the floral one is like whoa. Yeah, no, there are definitely flower arrangements like right on the neck. Yes. It's almost like it's springing up. That's very metaphorical. I am like mother nature.
Not that my breasts being the center of attention is necessarily a bad thing. We can make that the theme of the day, but I feel like most signs pointed to this not being my dress. So we moved on to dress number three, which was our Sophie's Slenderman Sheath Dress, and that was it. But I think I liked a lot of things about this dress. The sleeves are really impressive, Condor and I really liked the sleek, broad-shouldered silhouette. But I think they were really more female Oscars. Oh my goodness, those magical things from the 90s that often went around like Isis.
They design ballerinas. Yes, of course, what are you talking about? I particularly liked that comparison because I wasn't actually allowed to have them when I was a kid. My mom said they would poke someone's eye out, which is actually probably a valid criticism of this dress as well. Yeah, no, I could slap someone. I don't love it, but imagine, imagine. Yes, I think that for most wedding dresses you have to raise the skirt to walk and dance after the Ceremony and, in this case, you can raise the sleeves by pinning them.them in the back. I love she has her arms.
She can hug people, you can dance and it looks so good. She's cool and jumper cables are edgy. I actually really liked the sleeves pinned this way too. She was less happy and more like a perched bird. You almost look like an owl, but there was still some wing-flapping potential. How does this one compare to the other two for you? This is definitely the best. Oh, I think I really like him a lot, but I'm not sure he's the one that made me feel a little rough and tough, like Daenerys from Game of Thrones. But my main concerns were the sleeves.
It could be like a tripping hazard for me as I walked down the aisle and also that the overall dress was a little tight which opens up the opportunity for lumps and bumps maybe after dinner or if a pair of Spanx comes off, It's also like colorful prizes. It's definitely beautiful and I think you should use this at some point in your life. But if they don't convince you for your wedding, we have another time. So with that we moved on to our fourth dress, which was actually the bridesmaids' choice. Now it has a lot of shine.
This dress is like a high-low wrap dress from the chosen Australian brand for a day. In fact, I had my eye on some of her dresses beforehand. So he was kind. By a happy coincidence that Caitlyn chose this one, I feel like a highlighter Hann. I feel like Glitter, how much does it weigh? It's actually not as heavy as I thought it would be, to be honest I don't feel the weight. Yes, it's surprisingly light, but you know, it's here. Now what I like about this dress is that it is hard to miss and definitely brings party vibes with it.
I feel the impulse. Yeah, I feel the party calling to me like I can see myself tearing it up on a dance floor somewhere. Perhaps literally suspended above it reflecting the light. You are the ball. I am the ball. You are the ball. Where is this going to dance around you is that you are literally a disco ball? Yes. Oh, the slow rotation. I got it. I have it completely rotating. Please, but although I feel like we all had a huge positive initial reaction to the glitter once I stopped moving and took a good look at the silhouette of the dress.
I just didn't feel like the design was quite there. suited me and despite it being her choice, I don't think it was the bridesmaids' favorite either. What do you think? Did I like the last one better? What do you think of the darker tone? I guess like a target. I like the color. I'm not sure if it's the color that's making me not feel like it's a wedding dress specifically. I think it was the asymmetrical skirt that made the dress feel a little less like a full dress to me and I can see that. like the short dress Yes, yes.
I'm not a fan of cool short dresses. Alright, that's a big no. After the disco dress, we were on to our second to last option, which was actually Christie's wild card pick. Very good, this is the pearl. I don't know god. She has left. This is fun. This is a pearl-encrusted, off-the-shoulder A-line dress made by Dana her L, who was also the designer of the first dress we tried on. I really like this one. I'm definitely getting Goddess II vibes, in particular I hated the structured bodice, the straps that strategically covered the chicken wing, the flowy skirt, and also the asymmetrical placement of the pearls.
I like that. It makes sounds I love that noise hoping my boobs don't fall out It felt like a modern Disney princess dress, or maybe like Belle's underwear with you know Like the corset and petticoat, but that's it All to say I thought it was very pretty. I think from what you liked it, it feels a little feminine, hmm, a little fruity. I think Kristi was right that it just wasn't my style. I think of all the ones we've tried, this is probably my favorite sleeveless. Yes, but I think I prefer the sleeves whether they are on the floor. or just up to the wrist I would like some sleeves I think and that is why it is good to try on this type of range because they do hear about killing curiosity about how other things look.
So our final dress brought back the sleeve in a big way. It's great, right? That was a lot of this, a lot of sleep, haha Well, not as many sleeves as Slenderman's dress, but they're definitely there now. This dress is like a flowy Dan Jones dress that has a deep V and is not bell sleeves, more like full sleeve lapels. She looks like a fairy goddess and it looks perfect on you. Yes, the waist is super, super flattering on my part. I really liked this dress. I like the sleeve. I like the neckline. I like the waist.
I like it to turn off. I like the eNOS flow. I feel comfortable but not bad. I feel like Elizabeth Taylor and like a giant captain. Yeah, it's like that doesn't bode well for our wedding, right? She had about seven marriages. I guess Tyler is right, but the point remains the dress itself was also very lightweight, so it was easy to turn and move around. I was a good turn of control. I hit someone or something. I think it was a bee, it is anyway. It also had some of the elements of that medieval silhouette that I liked.
You can get married at Excalibur in Las Vegas. You could have it. We're not getting married on Excalibur. The jury is still out. bachelorette party though But even though this dress ticked a lot of boxes for me. I still wasn't one hundred percent. Sure, it's a little more 1970s than 13'70s, but I really like it after doing some research, I think I'm actually referring to 11'70s, but you get the idea, I think one of the More important things was that it made me question this. dress is that it reminded me a lot of the dress I really wanted to try on in the first place, but it's not exactly the same.
So I feel like because I have such good feelings about stress that it makes me know that I want this kind of style, but it also makes me feel even more curious about that other dress here. Which I mean, yes, although I really liked this dress and also some of the other dresses that I wasn't ready to commit to. anything we had tried, so we ended our session at Low Ho empty-handed for now. Now, when we all did a post-mortem after the store, I think everyone agreed that the big sleeve dress from the '70s was the crowd favorite.
But when I keep coming back, there is one with a V neck and sleeves, but not like the crazy one. sleeves Yeah, that one really stood out when Lee came out of the dressing room Just look, but I still really felt like that final dress was close But no, the only call and what I felt about that dress was that it was like a little gentleman County Yes Too little, just a little, it really looks like it would be comfortable enough to wear in bed and even though I want comfort. I think it might be too comfortable for the wedding.
I feel like I would borrow it from you, just like sleeping there was like a long line. Wear the wedding dress. So I really wanted to show you the other dress I was thinking about. It was still flowy but a little more structured so this is the dress that is from a different designer And so I really like it now this dress is called the Juliet dress made by the brand or to lead the ceremony It reminds me of that black dress I had in University. That was, I think, black lace. Yes, bell and flare sleeves, but it obviously wasn't long.
Unfortunately, it was recently discontinued because they started having trouble getting the fabric, so it wasn't there when we walked in. I love it. It looks very romantic. That's why I can't commit though, when I asked Christy about it. She mentioned that she actually knows the designer who ogles Stephanie White and that there was a chance that she could make me a dress using Juliet. pattern but only with a different fabric. It seems that she also made it for some other brides who said that because it is no longer in production. There is no sample to try, so Christie suggested that Stephanie make a mock-up version. of the dress also known as muslin and then we could use it to make a decision.
So we're going to do this all over again Unfortunately, because making the muslin was going to take a few weeks. We weren't going to be able to have my bridesmaids. come join us to ho again But I was so grateful for your help in my quest to say yes to a dress. Don't say yes to dresses. I didn't think we had the trademark for that. Yes, TLC will come after us, Frocks to Frock. Yes, fast forward a few weeks and we were ready to return to the boutique hos. Well, here we are back at the ho Bride once again with Stephanie.
Who is the designer of Oda? Bow in the ceremony and she has the muslin of that? Juliet dress that I really want to try on. I'm really excited and a little sweaty, I guess that's a good thing. It is a muslin and not the actual dress. So, without further ado, Stephanie brought the model. Oh, she looks at that tie on the sleeve, it looks amazing. Now once again this is not the actual dress, like it's not the final fabric and it has no beading or finishing. It's just the silhouette. So please ignore any pin if you see it, you're singing right?
Sorry, but I immediately felt great anyway. I love it. I really love it, I really really like it, I knew I was going to love the sleeves, but I was surprised by how much I liked the other details like the neckline. I don't care about the Oscar DP, my shaved chest. And I feel pretty. I quickly realized that this was the dress I was looking for. I don't know if we'll find a better dress. I think this is what was in my head, you need. This was in my head. Oh yes, this is perfect, yes, this is perfect.
If this had been more traditional and I would have liked to see you for the first time on our wedding day, I think it would be a little soft, wouldn't it now? You are fired? Well, then it was time we said sure to the dress. I really love it. No, it's incredible. What are you doing now? Do I just run away? So Stephanie stepped in to pin and measure some more to use in the next iteration. Stephanie is finding all the things that need to be fixed and I'm like the slave. Now finishing the dress will still take us a few months.
We still have to choose the fabric we're going to use and we may also have to do one or two more rounds of Alterations with the muslin, but we'll get there the next time you see it. It will look even better. So this is mainly my wedding dress. I am very pleased with almost everything about this dress and I am so grateful that Christi and Stephanie were able to make this dress a reality for me. Is this how you're going to walk down the aisle? You better believe it? You're going to do the Carlson to the altar.
I was getting into that real thing. I think it will go really well with our venue and overall wedding style, which I call a minimalist indoor Midsummer Night's Dream stage design in the fall. That's actually exactly what I told our wedding planner. She may think I'm crazy. Do you feel like preparing to make a speech like Shakespeare? And this doesn't help me get started. Do you want to accept that? Absolutely not, because even if no one really wants to listen to me soliloquy, I think this dress has a poetic and romantic vibe. Another thing I really love about this dress is that it looks a lot like something I would normally wear, only it's dressier and obviously longer, so I feel very comfortable and at home while wearing it.
OMG I feel like they shouldn't be allowed to study this type of dress and of course I love the sleeves. I've probably said that about 400 times if you're playing a drinking game in this video and your sleeves are on. you made your list But besides all that, I'm glad we put this together because it's a big piece of the wedding puzzle that we now have locked in and I guess also as a twist I had to do this when

choosing

my wedding. Dress up or say "sure" from the dress video and at the same time keep the final shape of the dress a secret from yourselves.
From Tyler and also partially from me, at least for the next few months. Thank you all very much for watching and once again, a huge greeting.
