We Fixed the Worst VFX Movie Ever

May 31, 2021
oh hey, you may have seen our video last year where we

fixed

the

worst

vfx shot

ever

. Well, what if I told you there was something even worse? What if I told you there was a

movie

where

ever

y shot was the

worst

vfx shot ever taken? So there's a

movie

from a long time ago called The Birds. The movie was directed by Alfred Hitchcock, that's his name from now on, just Alfred, so it was a movie about how birds would get up and start attacking people for no reason. reason, I guess flying down, oh yeah, getting up, is the opposite of getting up, but burdemic is a completely different piece of craftsmanship.
we fixed the worst vfx movie ever
Erdemic is similar to The Room in that it was a very low budget film and has a cult following due to its wacky nature. Seeing the VFX artists react, it was like wait a second, this would be the perfect job for the team and maybe we'll do some re-edits, maybe we'll do some new music, but mostly we've got some new VFX, now we're doing it. HE. It's sacrilege, we're touching a perfect piece of art that shouldn't be touched, but we're going to put on our George Lucas hat a little and hopefully try to make Verdemock something good.

More Interesting Facts About,

we fixed the worst vfx movie ever...

The question I have is if we make it a little better, are we going to make it less entertaining, I mean it's actually a little worrying to see that burdemic works because they tried so hard to get it right, but now it's burdemic, peter, it's not even Do you know what birdemic is, no, never. I've seen it, the effects are good, yes, the effects are perfect. Peter reacts to the burdemic, let's get into it. All I remember is this music playing over and over again. James Wynn, that's his name. He directed this masterpiece. Whoa, oh, they're in the park. looking at the birds, it's so cute, that's just the intro birds, there's an explosion, the birds bomb, okay, so this is it, we go from zero to birdemic in half a second, omg the above shot, This is what We're talking about Peter, these are the good things, they're like here come the birds, what was that bird vomit?
we fixed the worst vfx movie ever
That was gunga bird. I wonder how the actors felt about this while they were filming it. You know, would you like it? Yes, we are. I'm going to try to raise the buremia, I think we need to add something new to the birds if we just add modern bird effects, like sure, we can do it, we can paint the existing birds, we can trace them in new 3D models, render them, but how Do we elevate the scene and turn it into something new? Yeah, I mean, we could take the hallway lens, the action scene lens with cinematic visual effects and apply it to this movie, just make it epic, man, yeah, dude, but I like the idea of likes. , so they're fighting regular birds, I mean updated regular birds, but then it ends with a boss sequence, a boss battle, what if we gave them this really muscular arm, super like they have the wings, they have the legs, but they also have these super advantages? arms, so it's like he lands like the natives, like yeah, and then the arms come out like he's thinking about something that looks like the rock ball, yeah, that's what it was, that's what he expects, what you just asked what the heck is a balrog balrogs, oh and what are the rings?
we fixed the worst vfx movie ever
Oh, I saw those movies. We have a lot of building blocks for a cool scene to work with. We have a lot of shots of them shooting out the window. Lots of shots of birds, obviously, if you start with birds. We're going to start editing and then we're going to get together again later this week, we're going to get our wings ready and that's okay, while the guys are in Los Angeles, the land of birds, they asked me to come to Texas and film some in their natural state. habitat, so as they do this new version of the pandemic, courtesy of today's sponsors, Squarespace, they have some really good, solid fundamental research to start with.
The first thing you'll want to know about birds is that birds have a migratory range. Now this is very similar to Squarespace's beautiful award-winning templates with award-winning 24/7 customer service, because through that beautiful range of options you will be able to explore the entire migratory space of the Internet by creating a beautiful website yourself. The next thing you'll want to know about birds is that they exist in families, and like Squarespace's multi-contributor tool, you'll be able to work with your family of other creators with different levels of access to your website. birds, create nests through Squarespace's audioblocks feature.
You can nest audio on your website and that will be sent natively to many other platforms, so if you have a podcast, you can nest it on your website and it will be sent to anyone who wants to listen to it, another key thing to really understand what What birds are all about is having a great overview tool like this book I'm using here with Squarespace's traffic overview tools. People who use Squarespace will be able to understand who is coming and going. of your website and the last thing I really want you guys to know is go to squarespace.com runner team and you will get 10 off your first purchase of a website or domain that is squarespace.com runner team look at that look A those guys, these are owls, so when it comes to editing, there are two things we really want to address: one is to remake the birds to look like evil birds trying to kill people and then two, to actually show a bird. death as the cool killing of a bird for a movie that's marketed as birdemic shock and horror, a surprisingly small amount are actually action scenes, i mean, director james nguyen himself describes this as a horror romance, the romance and character development, james has it covered.
As far as the characters fighting the birds and having a cool action scene with them, there really isn't much to Whitney Moore, who is the actress in this. What we want is for her to have a moment where she finally gets to kill a cool bird that she never had. So hopefully we can finally give him that. The thing is, there's literally like a shot of her shooting a fucking gun in that scene, so that's all we have to work with as far as a heroic character moment, what we need for the scene. a character moment where she says something or like the camera is holding her up to show this revelation that she's coming to save the day and kill this bird.
There's nothing, although we have to find a way to get some shots of her looking really badass, but it works out. That Clint really knows Whitney, maybe we can get her to come shoot some shots, let's see, hey, hey, what's up guys? Hey, Whitney, how's it going? How are they doing well? I've seen this movie too many times. moments when you were on set doing this, did you have an idea like what did you see in your head what you imagined these birds looking like? The thing starts out being just the guy and the other guy and I instantly thought like this is going to be so bad, yeah, yeah, there was never a moment where I was like, man, yeah, cool, so we basically rephrased it so that there is a sacred boss bird and it's up to you at the end of this and how you.
Get your moment of redemption like you killed a sweet bird in this. The only thing we're missing is like a defeated character of your character in this. I don't know if you'd be willing to come for a green screen. pick up yeah, I'm totally, everyone's been a good guy and getting tested we get tested regularly okay, I'm excited, see you guys, see you in peace, okay, great, fantastic Wednesday at noon today, Whitney is here, she She will be our actress for these. Tomas I feel like I'm having some PTSD flashbacks. It feels good to put it in a new context.
It's strange. I just had this weird flashback to the scene you're shooting in the movie. You have the same movement. hey bird brain peck someone your size hey burbane beg someone your own father what's another good term for derogatory bird we have that's a federal crime that's ill eagle you'll need treatment Doctor, hey, feather face, two of you can play this game. Long story short, it was literally just you and him, and it was the three of us, usually putting a stick between my legs to pick up the audio, yeah, it was the first audition I ever got, after graduating high school, I thought.
I can try to make movies now and I auditioned in a parking lot, which should have been the first red flag, but it wasn't, and then he called me an hour later to tell me I got the second red flag, how long are they filming? ? For that, seven months only on weekends, but still, so much, you shot green screen footage that never amounted to a ton of green. We also filmed the love scene like eight times, oh boy, I think I just wanted to do it. the birds and, from what I know, the way Hitchcock behaved on the set, I realized that he was really trying to be that kind of author who refers to himself very often as an author and, uh, Flower, flower, those visual effects were better or worse. than you expected, I think in some ways they are worse, I mean, because they seemed two dimensional and even he had said that the graphics were not up to par, but he says that if you like to squint, they look good or you like them. you know, he gives it a lot and says, well, you get it, you get what I'm looking for and then it's good and yeah, I like it, I can joke about it now because it was a really traumatic experience but it's also guided me.
I've met almost every friend I've ever had in Los Angeles and I love bee movies, so yes, I can look back on them and laugh, but at the time it was a truly miserable experience. Let's try to add some legit bird effects. this, so we'll see my expectations, the bar is very, very low, so you may be wondering what this boss bird is going to look like. I wonder oh my gosh, oh my gosh, mate, it's so good, good job guys, thanks again, bye. the shots it's time to finish the effects finish the editing finish this so we can give Whitney the catharsis she deserves dude this is like a very high quality bald eagle model I don't know how to model a bald eagle but luckily someone else already did it I did in Turbo Squid.
Clint will tell you how he created the actual swarms, but we have some birds falling from the sky and hitting the ground and it's my responsibility to make it happen. The first thing I decided to try to do was spin. this bird is like a ragdoll physics simulation, so it's like it has all the lenses spinning around like a bird, you know, like getting hit by vans, however Cinema 4d doesn't really have a super easy way to do ragdolls, so I ended up converting him. The idea behind it is that you basically model a very low poly cage around your model and simulate it like soft physics. body physics object and then you link your model to that soft body and it will deform it the same way so you don't have to go through all the processing power of having to simulate millions of polygons, you only simulate a few dozen link it to your mesh high quality and its mesh will actually deform the same way I just prepared it, I import it into my camera, track the van scene and play it on the ground, that's it, that's the shot now, everything what this shot needs is a big flock of birds, Clint, get your flock out, I'm not going to do that, we have a lot of birds to add to all these shots and we can't do a bird, one by one, picking them up by hand and where they go, no. we need to simulate it with artificial intelligence ren, you sent me a little something, I don't like that language, dean, I don't either, that's bad, boyd's means bird, objects, voids, it's basically a way to measure how flocks of birds move a flock . of birds are basically governed by three individual factors, we have coherence, which is basically the flock trying to find each other, they are trying to orbit back to the main group, separation, that is how far away they stay from each other in alignment, if you want to learn. about how flocks work and all that, basically, how we are simulating these birds that are meant to be intelligent every day, we already made the perfect video for you to watch.
Luckily for us, we are using x particles and x particles is an advanced particle simulation plugin. for Cinema 4D actually has a flock modifier that has specific parameters that allow me to control the movement of these particles. It's an experiment until you get the look right and then what I do is I assemble a bird, animate a bird flap on its wings, you know it's just a loop and then I take that bird and basically say hey, anywhere there's a particle, turn it into a bird, this animated bird and then from that point you'll have a flock of birds becoming james next time you do burdemic eagle 3c maybe have three things in mind: coherence, separation and alignment, so the crux of thisnew burdemic version will be Whitney's fight with the boss bird, so I had to make a boss bird that was so imposing that its death would provide satisfaction to Whitney for years to come and maybe James too, who knows, but I'll explain how it was done.
I did. I think this bird should be a real meatloaf. I thought the best way to do it would be with this free software. It's called human doing, those are incredible muscles all the way up, wait all the way up, this is what the rock looked like when I was five years old. Oh, this was the biggest thing in Blender. We bring our friend. Basically what I've done is I took a man and I cut off all of his limbs and all of his limbs and replaced them with eagle parts, so we've got some nice wings here.
I took his arms, cut off his hands, and then stretched his back. of the arms out so the feathers have a little bit of flutter, we're using a hair system, but instead of rendering the hair, we're instead, I render an object and that object is just an image of a feather that you might remember in the time capsule video. I reviewed the setup and went through the same process here. What I did was bring in the skeleton and then align it manually. That was with the bird model and then I asked Blender to match the two and it did it automatically and it was practically perfect.
I didn't need to make any adjustments, so I set up my bird model from this point, everything I need. What I have to do is put on a rococo motion capture suit take some shots, choose my camera angles, render them and we're ready, it's a week later and we have our birdemic cutout finished. Clint and Ren can't join us today. both out, but we have the team here, we'll show them what we came up with. I feel bad for Ren and Clint. Nowadays, movie theaters are closed. Filmmakers can't show their works in a public place here and these two guys.
You're missing out, I don't know how these guys convinced us to spend a week and a half of company time and money fixing a really bad movie, but they did it, I hope it's funny, you guys have the lead actress in the movie. These are some big forces colliding here so it's going to be amazing there are birds everywhere come on we have to lose them well I think we lost it oh the empty tank stops here look here comes that big bird hey bird this kiss a someone your own size, uh, I'm very impressed because like in that first shot, I'm like, wait, this is the real movie.
I thought you were going to be like reconstructing the movie, but you'd like to have to put those birds back over the footage like, wow. I have to say the amount of technical skill and polish here, this is the best designed shiny turd I have ever seen, they said they made a mold of that turd and then molded it perfect. steel and chrome it and then dip it in water in the coolest pattern it's so cool just the shots of them shooting the guns out the window are so cool that's really cool yeah did you trace the guns back to our hands?
Clint got a smg and a rocket launcher in his hand so it's awesome it's so funny how he had the orange chip in this fng no that's where I thought oh this is the real movie because there's an orange chip and coincides with madness. Because the original Jake is still there, I guess the remake loses a little bit of that original charm that the original had because he tried so hard to be good, but he didn't get there and that made him kind of charming. I don't know, we got into this strange uncanny valley where it doesn't have that original charm, but it has a new kind of feel to it, so, I really don't know what to do with that, are there other wacky movies?
If you want to see it remade, leave a comment below to let us know and we have also done many other types of VFX makeovers or R-rated makeovers from other movies. They are really fun videos to watch. Look at them. There is a playlist on the screen. right now he's got them all compiled for you, if you haven't seen them you're missing out so click on that playlist, click on it, click.
