that the franchise was something that used to be great, so I thought I'd take a look at the first game in the series and see if it really holds up as something of value worth playing.

Today, in a surprise twist, I'm actually not going to cover the entire franchise in a four-hour long video so we can all breathe a sigh of relief. What I will do is play the anniversary edition of Fable that was released on PC. Back in 2014, ten years after the original release of the first game. I guess it seems like it takes that whole concept of "hey, you can be good or bad" and then just pushes you hard to be heroic, the game further compounds this feeling with the introduction of the labyrinth. We're getting to a part of the game where I think the developers ran out of ideas. or they didn't know how to design an ending to the game because this prison is crawling with these whack-a-mole undead and it sucks, not because it's hard but because it's annoying as hell, I barely take it.
The damage from these guys is just the sheer amount of them that keep appearing under me and just knocking me down and then the Darkness Explosive Mushrooms would make another appearance, which is just fantastic to try to deal with when you have a never-ending one. horde of scrawny guys trying to give you business from behind. Apparently he has cheated death somehow and is now trying to find a way to return to Albion from a place known as the Bronze. Here, well, when you head to the Nostrils fighting area, there are plenty of zombies as always, but there are also Jack's henchmen. The nice thing is that they actually fight each other, which is a nice touch. I really like this choice, it definitely exemplifies each side of the morality coin, but after this, that's the true ending of the game and it feels a lot better than vanilla games ending, so let's get this over with and give my Final thoughts on Fable, the huge amount of things you can do in this game, from changing your character's body weight, scary alignment and attractiveness to buying a stock of cider from a merchant and selling it. at a higher rate than another, fishing and digging for treasure, buying a house and upgrading it before renting it or simply exploring every corner of a map to find hidden treasures is, honestly, a delight.
I guess I've just gotten used to this mentality that a lot of newer games have where the developers have just taken this huge open world map and put nothing into it, and while I wouldn't call these fable open worlds per se little micro levels and areas of The maps are packed with enough content to make me think, well, what is Rose Cottage or what's behind this building without going overboard and making me not care to explore anymore? The side quests in Fable are split 70/30 between short and sweet and tedious as hell, there's the occasional uninspired or just plain boring one and then there are horrible ones like this godforsaken quest.
It's an escort mission, except you have to stay close to your slow party at all times and if you stray too far during combat, the prisoner escapes, but for the most part the side missions are pretty fun additions to the game and not There is a lot to complain about. Some examples include this grandmother who appears as a sweet old woman who is worried about her grandson in a cave when you make your way to the end of the cave, a nymph has the child locked in a barrier and demands that you bring her another innocent to sacrifice instead of the child.
I chose to kill the nymph, which results in a mini boss fight when you return the boy to his grandmother, he tells you that she is worse than the nymph and that he is going to grab some of the cabin and leave, then there is this one that He says hey, you want to go out with my daughter, well, you have to change your hairstyle to this really boring one. and unattractive, oh, and mutton chops, she loves mutton chops and mmm, a big stupid sarcastic mustache and by the way, I don't have a daughter, so see how to make heroes like you look stupid, Have you seen yourself?
The game is not at all great. things obviously there's a lot of things like how do I do this. I had to look up a lot of different things because the menus and different systems like marriage don't have an obvious tutorial. I gave this girl like 10 boxes of chocolates before trying to Give chocolates to every person in town before giving one a wedding ring before she gave me the option to marry her. I actually tried to marry the barber first, but it turns out she only gives you the option to shop with her and not get married.
Even though I give her a wedding ring, when you get married and are ready to take Grandma to Applebee's, you have to be flexible with your wife until she is ready to put it on. I mean, that's real life, but I guess I just did it. I don't expect it to translate so well into a video game. Instead, I was trying to go to bed and get her to follow me and I was trying to press some kind of button from there. I will say that at least you're rewarded with 30 seconds of awkward black screen which, honestly, is a very apt description of the real-life act.
Oh, I couldn't for the life of me figure out how to use my hotkey because I didn't realize that you have to hold down the key. trigger to use them because it's usually just the XP collection button, which in itself is a bit of a silly mechanic, as mentioned before, the whole sacrificing of people for rewards is one of the most complicated in the game and they offer me little or nothing. The explanation on how to maximize my rewards without looking for it. The bragging confused me at first because it seemed like if I backed out it would cancel the mission.
The game explains how bragging works after you have gone through a bragging cycle. The menus look nice and neat, but there's too much on them and I can't stand trying to navigate and sort through them most of the time, although I did praise the concept of an economy where you can buy goods from one merchant and sell them at another for profit , it's actually terribly broken because you can buy a bunch of stuff wholesale from a seller and, with enough cleverness, you can sell it to them for a profit. The voice acting is lovely when you're doing a minor side quest. or something that is intentionally ridiculous.
I'll leave Gaunt's cabin last week and see more hostages recovering, but it hurts the game when more serious things happen because of how they're stuck together or how the voice lines seem rushed or confusing. Finish it quickly and then do the same for yourself, there you are, what's wrong, don't you recognize your own sister? The last missions, theSide quests and areas of the base game range from a bit difficult to just not good. I wasn't that entertained with any area. north of Bower Stone, beyond the shores of Hook, Vanilla's story was very mediocre until the DLC begins and then becomes a little more bearable when it is explained that Jack is some kind of entity that took over Albion and , by extension, explains the betrayal of mazes, but despite all those negatives, none of them stop me from having fun with Fable.
Overall, all the bad things combine to make the game less than fantastic, but they don't have enough impact to keep it from being a great and entertaining experience. in its own right, especially for 2004, you can make out the definitely shitty animations, the cartoonish voice acting, and at best the decent plot, but the game is ridiculously ambitious for its time, so it's a fable as good as I remember, yes, actually it is, maybe even a little. Better, I have a feeling that I don't think any other game plays the same way and I really had a lot of fun if you haven't played the game in a long time or haven't tried it yet.
