The Version of Terraria You Shouldn't Have Seen... (Terraria Beta)

May 29, 2021
Hello everyone, my name is James and welcome back to Chippy Gaming, so in January 2011, aspiring programmer Andrew Spinks sat down and, for the first time, began working on a project that the world would later know as Terraria or Terraria, if you're Andrew, it's now. January 2021, which now means it has been 10 years since Terraria began development. To celebrate this, I wanted to give you a full playthrough of the Terraria

beta

, which I estimate to be from late March 2011. This has never been shown in its entirety here on youtube and is really impressive to see before getting into the game. , although I want to tell a brief history of this

version

of Terraria and how it really affected the release of the game, but before we get into that, if you enjoyed today's video, be sure to share it.

A big thumbs up and why not subscribe to Chippy Gaming. We are trying to reach 1 million subscribers this year. A Terraria channel has never done it before and with your help I feel like we can do it right. Let's talk about the story. As I mentioned at the beginning, Terraria began development in January 2011 and was released just five months later on May 16, 2011. What you may know is that Terraria was not actually intended to be released in May, but was instead meant to

have

a lot more work. put in it, but because two separate

version

s of Terraria were actually leaked once the distribution deal with Steam was closed - the game was released in early May of that year - it's hard to find accurate information about what happened during all of this, so take everything I

have

.

More Interesting Facts About,

the version of terraria you shouldn t have seen terraria beta...

Let's say with a pinch of salt, but for those wondering what the two different versions were, the first one is known as the Terraria alpha and it was actually leaked a little before the

beta

in this version of the game, you could run the game . play but you won't be able to save, there were only a couple of items in the game and everything looked completely different when this first version was initially leaked, the responses were pretty good, at this point people had already

seen

the Terraria reveal trailer and The game looked very different from this initial alpha version, so people assumed it was just a mock version long before they heard about the game.

However, the second version was met with a lot of skepticism, as

seen

when Terraria was originally being developed. I developed all the sprites that were shown during the reveal trailer, they were placeholder sprites actually inspired by Final Fantasy, so what Relogic did during this time was announce the game and reveal it, but then they hired artist Finn Bryce to review all those assets. and replace them with the ones we know about in the first release of Terraria, so it seems that this beta version of Terraria was actually leaked a week before the game was first sold on Steam and circulated through the website 4chan.

The problem is because this version had two. months at this point and still featuring all those Final Fantasy sprites and an incomplete boss list, it seems the reception to this was pretty bad and the problem is that people were pirating and downloading the game that relogic intended to sell only a couple of Days later, all this unfortunately forced the developers and they released the game on May 16, 2011 with version 1.0, but this is not what they envisioned for Terraria, so I have always wondered how these versions were originally leaked. from Terraria. I assumed it was from some kind of disgruntled beta tester, but it turns out what might have happened is that people discovered that Red was hosting all the Terraria files they needed to download on the official Terraria website, from what I've read. several forum posts around this time, it seems like some soul person was able to download Terraria, they let the developers know that their game was downloadable, so it was cut, but then they circulated that beta version using 4chan, which I really love. about this story is that this event could have ruined terrarium, but the developers actually dedicated themselves to making terrarium what they wanted it to be, despite releasing it early, they still worked on it for the next few months and updated it to the update 1.1, which I've always assumed was the point at which the developers were more than happy to hand the game over to those who don't know when Terraria was released.
It sold over 200,000 copies in its first week on Steam and almost half a million in the first. month it would have been very easy to cash in and walk away, but re-logic has never been about that and I have always respected that, unfortunately this version of Terraria and all the previous versions of Terraria that I have shown on this channel and are not available. to download and I can't share them with you, the reason they are in my possession is because when I was younger I wanted to preserve these versions of Terraria so that many years later, Terraria historians can take a look at the game. story, so I'm really glad I did it.
I also want to thank relogic for being so cool when I show these old versions of

terraria

and thank you very much for 10 years, but with the story out of the way, let's have some. Check out the Terraria beta from late March 2011. So my adventure started like any other by creating a character and you can already see that things look a little different. Here we are using Final Fantasy inspired sprites, so it looks like the player only has one leg at this point, you only had three different hairstyles to choose from and the miscellaneous option would actually change the color of your shoes and also the color of your belt in modern

terraria

players don't have belts, as they deserve. very tight jeans, what's also interesting is that in the world creation screen it shows you exactly how many megabytes are needed for a small, medium and large world, so the world looks quite similar to how it looks in the version 1.0, the guide actually looks the same.
Also, however, there are a few frames missing from his animation, so when he walks it looks a little more choppy. The game is also missing a lot of different sound effects, so you can see that every single thing he has in mind in this video actually has the same thing. sound effect as I still do to this day. The first thing I tried to do was set up a house and also get a bow and arrow, but what's different is that I can create the wooden bow, however, at this point. I can't create any arrows. At this stage of development it was intended that you would just buy them from the merchant, so going back to those sound effects you can see that even as I mine this iron ore, it actually sounds like a modern terraria player. digging up some dirt, one thing I really loved seeing and this happened to me throughout my adventure is that the player couldn't absorb items as fast as they are today, so often the items would just spill out of the character and get trapped underground because the player couldn't absorb them fast enough.
One of the things I liked is that the first cave system I found actually looks a lot like a cave system you'd find in modern terrariums, I think that's really cool how the foundation was there from the beginning of development. , so one thing that was really interesting is that in this version of the game mana didn't exist yet, there were no fallen stars, you couldn't gain mana, but what was interesting is that every once in a while I would kill a slime or an enemy and the game was really trying to heal my mana. I also managed to get some arrows from these parts, so it doesn't really matter what version of Terraria I'm playing some things. it just never changed, I realized that when watching this footage I missed the first living crystal, not to worry, although a couple of moments later I found a new life crystal and this is where I had my first big discovery, so people that they may have done it.
By watching my 1.0 video you will know that to get a life crystal you needed to use a wooden hammer in modern terrariums, you just use a pickaxe, however the wooden hammer didn't actually exist at this point in the development of terrariums, so it turned out that what you had to do was create a silver hammer and then get that life crystal and it's interesting because I went back and watched the first reveal trailer for Terrarium and you can see the player doing this with a silver hammer too, so with a bit of health I found my first skeleton, it seemed like they were a little faster than the ones we got in the first version of the terrarium, however I'm not too sure if maybe it was just me panicking, but the good thing is that it actually fell. a hook that I would later turn into a grappling hook, but because the player doesn't say what item is above their head, it's funny, I didn't really notice it until an hour after I had it, so not much time in my adventure, I got my first outdoor chest and it's funny because in that 1.0 video I made last year I said I missed them a little bit and then we got them in Terraria 1.4.
I also managed to find a blue mushroom biome and like when I was a kid I get really excited about these, no matter what version of terraria I'm playing, when you pull down the drop down menu and get this new feeling of discovery, it's really addictive and one of my favorites. Favorite parts of Terraria, so since my players' inventory was filling up very quickly, I decided to return home and start working on my NPC tower. Building a house is exactly the same as in the first version of terraria, but this part is a little different. The merchant greeted me very quickly and looks a little different, so from what I have read, this version of the merchant actually was directly inspired by a Final Fantasy character.
This was, of course, before they hired an artist to replace everyone. of the sprites that were inspired by Final Fantasy, but the cool thing is that you're selling the same items you sold in the full version, so now that I had a merchant, I really wanted to check out some of the gems I found while mining. I knew at this point the gems had no use so I figured they were probably used from the beginning to try and make some money for the player, so it turns out the gems sell for quite a bit and that meant just by selling them. a couple of them, while they weren't rare, my character was minted, meaning I could buy pretty much any item I wanted to see, but I decided what I would do is buy a bunch of arrows since I couldn't.
To create them, I also used this time to sniff out a bunch of oars I had found in the world and now had enough materials to make a pair of silver greaves. The sprite for this is so fun it's actually like a silver pair. pants like I actually loved it in a weird way, later that night I discovered the dungeon for the first time and while this dungeon looks amazing as it looks in the full version, what's different is the old one I now have. I'd never seen this before, I had no idea there was a placeholder item for the old man.
You can tell he's just a merchant with white here, but you can see that with white hair, white beard and red coat, that's where the draper was. I was inspired, so I was so surprised that I actually drowned right next to it, so I got my first terrarium. Death stood next to the original old man and that seemed very appropriate to me. After that I did some more spelunking and discovered my first accessory, so the accessory. What I got was actually Hermes boots. Now I was quite interested in this because I guess at this point all the props can have different sprites due to the fact that we got the original cloud on the bottle from red that would look like this. the angel statue, but no, this looks like Hermes boots with the iron I found in the chest.
Then I was able to make a grappling hook. Now this works very similar to how it does in the full version. You have to manually pull it instead of holding it. a keyboard shortcut that was introduced later, but what I didn't know is that the grappling hook was actually intended as a weapon, so I realized this, while flying around the world, that it could damage the zombie, It became obvious pretty quickly. although why did they remove this because you would essentially try to use your grappling hook to get out of a bad situation but instead you would hit the enemy you are running from and just die from the fall damage, it was like it was actually a bit a nightmare with the idea of bosses in mind I decided it was time to check the corruption my goal here was to get some rotten chunks and some powdered bile so I could manually spawn on the world eater my intention was that the eye of Cthulhu can take too long to appear, so by doing the ear of the worlds I could get the dryad, I could get the shadow orbs and it would make everything a little easier, but actually a big problem arose shortly after this because I soon realized that this world had no demons and no other world I checked had them either, so thisIt meant that it was actually impossible to spawn on the World Eater.
Now a clear plan is that you would wait for the eye of gefulum and then what you would do is you would use the dryad to sell you some dust and then you would make the shadow orbs and generate the ear of the worlds that way. It turns out that the Eye of Cthulhu won't actually appear in any of these versions of Terraria, which I did. I don't know, it's actually blocked from fighting the boss, which we'll soon learn about Skeletron. One question I had when approaching this because I quickly realized this version has no mana: how do you trigger the water?
It works and also what it looks like so I went back into the dungeon once again looking for one, unfortunately I didn't find one so I moved on to my next question which was: does this version of Terraria have a fear of jumping and how does it work? that job and it turns out that yes, he has the scare with instant death, but we come back here later and there is actually a way to trick him, so for this video I ended up exploring five different worlds in search of a demon, although this shadow orb of here was the only one I could.
I found out it had a bug so by destroying the shadow orb what it allowed the world to do is appear on a meteorite and also give us the arm thief which was absolutely cool for me because I wanted to see what the arm thief looks like. arms and How does the meteorite work? Shortly after that the nurse ended up moving to my npc village and it was really cool to see that the nurse actually looks identical to how she looks today, she likes the guide although she's missing a few frames of animation so she walks. around a little different shortly after that we received the arrival of the arm thief, we will check them out in a moment and I was also able to find the meteorite.
The interesting thing is that the meteorite actually works very similarly to how it does. Nowadays, if a player steps on it without an obsidian school, it burns and straight subway heads appear around it. Meteor heads look and act a little different than they do today, they seem a little more aggressive and also a little more bouncy, but. I'll come back to this later to try to see if we can find a way to extract it at this point knowing that I can't summon the world devourer and I don't meet the requirements. criteria for the eye of cthulhu or the criteria that I know are in the full version I decided what I would do is use a little bit of my talents with modern terrariums and just take out the skeleton now taking out the skeleton is not too difficult in this version obviously , it's very similar to the same fight we have now, it's a little more floaty, although there is a very big problem: its defense is so high that you can only deal one damage each time you hit the boss.
The theory is that this was actually done so that the testers at the time wouldn't enter the dungeon, maybe the dungeon wasn't complete but it seems a little incomplete when we go there later, but I realized very quickly that it wasn't we would be take down Skeletron, but I had an idea in mind, so what I decided to do was abandon the fight and go back home and talk to our new arms dealer, so immediately you can see that the arm thief looks a little different from how she does it today, but what I liked is that the first dialogue option she gave me was about the nurse, so she's like the nurse from day one.
Okay, his idea makes a lot of sense, so what I decided to do was use some of the money I have. I got the gems and bought a mini shark, this is probably the best weapon in Terraria at this point in the game, so I decided if I had the mini shark and thousands and thousands and thousands of bullets with the amount of time you have. To do the fight, I would have to be able to defeat Skeletron, so I went to work buying only thousands of bullets, so going into the second fight I felt pretty confident that I was going to be able to do this, especially since I knew I wasn't going to die. in the fight and had enough bullets.
I knew that as long as I was accurate enough I should be able to take out his 3000 health, that is not the case at all. What really ended up happening is that it became daylight. And it looks like in this version of Terraria the Daylight Skeleton will still kill you instantly. If you've ever wondered what the original silver chess piece looks like, wonder no more because that's what it looks like. I love these classic sprites, so with the idea. To meet the criteria of the eye of cthulhu in mind, I decided to go exploring again and I actually did this in a new world and immediately found an accessory that I didn't really expect to find, so I ended up finding the cloud in a bottle, but what I was really hoping that what we actually found was the angel statue cloud in a bottle, as I mentioned before, Red said that the angel statue was originally going to be the cloud in a bottle, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed on this version.
In fact, we might find it after that. I also noticed that you can mine obsidian in this version with any pickaxe you have. You can also place blocks in lava and it completely removes it from the world which is cool and soon after I unlocked a memory. In my brain I forgot that I had even had these fire tire prototypes that were shown in the original Terraria reveal trailer back in April 2011, so not only do they look different, their attacks also work differently, so they fire the Same fireballs. They normally do that to you, but you can actually repel them and they will bounce like an enemy on Mario.
They also have very high defense and take a long time to kill and what's even better is that they will die in lava which obviously doesn't make sense and doesn't happen anymore so I managed to fight my way to hell and I was very excited about this because it really I wanted to check out what the cast armor looked like at this stage of development, however it never worked out that way. Then I discovered that you can mine Hellstone using any available pickaxe and it doesn't spew lava when broken, which it used to do in the full version.
However, I discovered that you can make an obsidian school which was quite interesting. I thought that would be it in this version of the game, however, I couldn't find a way to melt the hellstone. Now in modern terrariums you would use a hell forge but in this version of the game they didn't seem to spawn so I ended up using my grappling hook and went all over hell looking for one of these furnaces but unfortunately they never appeared and I couldn't do it using a normal oven so I think at this point this was just a part of the game it just wasn't finished yet so after fully exploring helm I decided to head back home and start working on some more houses for my npc's.
I wanted to see if maybe there was a small chance that we would get an npc that no one I've ever seen before maybe one that was removed from the game and it turns out that yes, I got a new NPC that you wouldn't really expect to be the guide it's true you hate the guide, don't worry about it, classic terraria can give you two of them, yes this was just a glitch, but oh my god, did it make me laugh? So now that I had the obsidian skull I decided, hey, I'll go see the meteorite.
At this point, I also did some gilding. peak and it turns out that now I can extract the meteorite. I will say that trying to mine this meteorite with the original meteorite heads is quite annoying, but I found that I could get a good balance just by moving it back and forth. What's also interesting is that The Meteor won't actually work with bombs and I also find this interesting because they changed this in Terraria 1.4 so it almost looks like Terraria is weirdly falling into its original fade, but yeah I took a bunch of meteorites because I was really excited to see what.
Meteor armor would look like at this point in development, how would a space weapon work without any way? Turns out none of that had been introduced yet, so I was able to create the meteor bars, however what could be done was mentally. by blowing, you could generate molten fury, so this is the hellstone we all know and love, the one that turns arrows into flaming arrows, so it seems that because the hellstone was not completed in this construction, this weapon was assigned to a meteorite, perhaps for testing. purposes, but hey, it actually works. I have a lot of arrows.
I tried it and look at those flaming arrows. Well done, so with my new clown in a bottle I decided to try Skeletron one last time since I was able to dodge a lot more. of his attacks meant I could spend less time healing and more time working on the fight, however, with only 389 health remaining I was swept out of the sky. I really feel like this was intentionally made impossible, so what I decided to do at this point was wait for the eye of cthulhu. I left my terraria recording for five hours with an alarm set every 24 minutes so that all I could do was pop in at the beginning of each night and see if the eye of cthulhu had spawned.
Unfortunately not, but one night I got a little bored and headed to the dungeon. I noticed the old man wasn't there anymore, so I thought, "Oh, maybe I'm safe, maybe the game thinks I killed Skeletron, but technically I didn't buy it." It worked and we were able to see what the dungeon looked like at this stage of development, however I feel like it was intentional that the testers weren't meant to come to this part of the game, so after five hours of waiting I realized that the eye of cthulhu was never going to appear. I feel like the boss fights maybe hadn't been done at this point, so I wanted to confirm that, so I ended up using the cheat engine.
Now players used this in the past to speed up time. I was never one of those. players, so this was the first time I experienced it and what I did here was I left the game running for an hour, so I ended up seeing I don't know 100 to 200 different night cycles, but unfortunately there was no Cthulhu eye. seen, I would have really loved to see the triad, but I managed to get into the game files and take a look at what it would have looked like. It also looks a little different, but it's cool to see that it has his signature on it.
Green hair is still one of the things I wanted to do after this is get a nice little photo in the dungeon, so I made a new world, checked the dungeon and actually managed to find at the top a bowl of water, now you can see. that this looks immediately different than what we have today and unfortunately due to no mana we couldn't see what the projectiles were, however with that I felt like I had tried everything I wanted to try so I thought that would be the end of my terraria beta adventure so that's it for today's video guys thank you very much if you made it to the end it was so much fun recording and learning about terraria it has the most interesting story for me and I can't believe that It's been 10 years since this game started development, this game has been such a big part of my life for the last 10 years and I imagine for many of you it's exactly the same, so we'll meet up in 10 more years and I'll see you when I'm 33.
Alright, have a great day everyone. I'll see you in the next one. Peace.
