It was a big problem. But in the United States there is one factor that is by far the most significant aspect of the Skyline GT-R's story. We never got it. But wait. If this car was never sold here, how is this one here? Well, if a car is 25 years old or older, regardless of its origin, it can be imported into the US and sold as a used car. But James, this car is a '99, so it's only 20 years old, not 25. So what the hell? This is what is called legal spectacle and exhibition. That means you can drive it on the highway, but no more than 2,500 miles a year.

And technically, you're only supposed to take it to shows or maintain it. This thing has been living in a lab and very soon it will be the only California legal R34 in the entire state. ♪ California here we come ♪ The Skyline Gt-R was not the only Skyline. There are four-door sedans, coupes, naturally aspirated and turbocharged engines, but the top of the line for the Skyline was the twin-turbo all-wheel drive, fast as *$%# GT-R, which brings us to this. The R34 Skyline debuted in 1998 and once again the GT-R was the definitive model. But this time there is something even more definitive.

This Skyline GT-R is GT-R V-Spec. To the right of the bat, you will see the beautiful painting. This color is called Midnight Purple II. This is most likely a nod to the infamous Midnight Club Street Racing that will soon arrive in Japan. The previous GT-R, the R33, was the first Skyline to wear the special purple paint. But this one has more things that change color and is really a trip to walk around the car. At first it is like purple, but then as it passes, it turns green. And sometimes if the light is lower, it looks black and even gold.
We did our best to light it, but there's really no way for you guys to see how crazy this painting looks. Only 282 V-Spec Midnight Purples were built, making this car extremely rare. Legend has it that all Midnight Purple R34s sold out in 10 days. The GT-R's styling is also special. Unlike the rather low-key look of the R32, the R34 lets you know from the start: "Yes, I'm different", "I'm the one who runs!". The headlights are like a frown that makes him look super angry. And the front grilles look like the mouth of a damn bull shark swimming through the waves looking for wackos to bite them in half.
Oh, are you on a paddle board? (grunts) Not today! The rear fenders stick out like the laurels of the most vigorous horse you've ever seen. #buffhorses And to top it all off, there's this dual-element adjustable brim. You can celebrate Thanksgiving in addition to this. It's *$%# sick, man. The fact that it is double element reduces drag and increases potential downforce. This thing was designed to be driven to the limit. The rear of the car also has another feature we're not used to seeing in the US: a fog light. This right here is a fog light that makes the car easier to see from behind in dense fog.
It was not required to be sold in Japan, but European laws require all cars to come with rear fog. Which also means that Europe acquired this car. Do you know who else got it? New Zealand, Hong Kong, Singapore. In Singapore they don't even let you chew gum. You know who didn't understand it? Us! It's f*#$%# b*#$@%! Now you can't talk about the R34 without mentioning (boom) the brake lights. They say simplicity is the ultimate in sophistication and these lights definitely make a big argument for that being true. You know that for many people these lights are the most memorable part of the car because it is the last thing they see when you drive by them.
Faster than the speed of sound on the Shikoku Highway. (car engine roaring) (man screaming) There are rubber deflectors right behind this wheel that when air is drawn in through the front intakes, it pushes it towards the center of the brake rotor and due to the action of the rotor, it draws in all the air and cools the metal from behind. This keeps the brakes cool and prevents them from fading during long trips with hard braking. The V-Spec also comes with a stiffer suspension to keep the car planted in corners. And all R34s have this neat little front splitter on the front.
This limits air intake under the car and helps push it over the car, pushing the front of the car toward the road. At the rear, the V-Spec-specific carbon fiber diffuser accelerates air coming out of the rear of the car by creating a low-pressure zone under the rear instead of behind, putting more weight on the wheels. rear wheels and increases grip. The GT-R rides on 18-inch wheels and features 324-millimeter four-piston Brembo brakes at the front and two-piston brakes at the rear. Enough talking about the outside. Let's take a look inside. The first is the first. I can't believe it's inside an R34 GT-R.
Guess what freshman, James? You did it! The first thing that stands out is that it is a Japanese sports car from the 90s, so the interior is very, very, very sparse. There's not a lot going on. As for amenities, there are none. But that's what this car is for. This car is for driving and driving fast! (Car engine roars) Those are harness cuts in the damn seats, for God's sake. These boosters are also huge, so you'll be able to destroy the Toge, embarrassing Takumi without slipping or tiring your legs. The group is very driver-focused and super simple.
And one thing I find very interesting about the group is that the speedometer only reaches 180 kilometers per hour. Now that's about 110 miles per hour. I know this because I'm a math guy. Needless to say, it goes much faster than that. So a popular upgrade is like a Nismo group that goes 320, which is about 200 miles per hour, which makes a lot more sense for a car called Godzilla. The R34 also has a six-speed transmission, as opposed to the five speeds of the R32 and R33. And it's like running between gears with this thing parked, it's incredible. This is me starting the car. (car starts) (laughs) (relaxing music) The center console is super minimal.
It is a Japanese car from the 90s. It has climate control. One feature that I find very strange because I'm American is this headlight height controller that allows you to adjust the angle of the headlights depending on the conditions. If we had headlight adjustment controllers, I think America would collapse in about 17 days because everyone is stupid (bleep) and we already have bulldozers that shine blue lights in their eyes. (creepy music) (screams) (laughter) We just can't take it. Just above the super simple center console is the jewel of the R34's interior. The multifunction display or MFD.
A film that in 1990 was light years ahead of its time just like The Matrix. And, frankly, one of the most underrated parts of the R34. The MFD is this LCD display with a digital readout of critical engine functions like boost pressure, accelerator pedal position, fuel injector duty cycle (laughs), oil temperature, water temperature, exhaust temperature, temperature intake/intercooler. They are all very useful on the track and a lot of fun when driving around town. It's also a shifter-like feature that flashes red to tell you, "Yes, shifter!" Next up is probably the coolest thing I've seen on any car, especially one from the '90s.
It's a TV button. It says TV and if you have this special Nissan radio, you could watch TV on your damn dashboard! Things like the MFD are very common in cars today, but remember, the R34 is 20 years old! Next year you can drink! We're going to throw him a party! We're taking it to New Orleans! (applause) And at the time of the GT-R's launch, the MFD was seen as a revolutionary fusion of digital and analog technology and just a glimpse of what the future had to offer. (deep bass music) Interestingly, most of the V-Spec's V-Spec is under the car.
One of those things is the Atessa ET-S Pro all-wheel drive system. That means the car can not only selectively send torque from the front or rear wheels depending on driving conditions, but the V-Spec also has an active limited slip differential, meaning you can control how much the rear differential locks depending on power. sent to it. So if it's open, it's very easy to turn it. Swoosh swoosh swoosh swoosh. (Car engine roar) If it's locked, then you skid. ERR ERR ERRR ERR. (car tires screeching) the more power is sent to the rear, the more locked it is.
This makes the V-Spec extremely capable on sketchy mountain roads like Mount Akina, which are often covered in water and dirt. This was done 20 years ago, man. Another really interesting thing under the car is a system called Super HICAS that helps the GT-R corner. Basically, the system uses electronic actuators to turn the rear wheels one degree in either direction, which helps turn the car at low speeds; The rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, making the car turn faster. But at high speeds, the rear wheels turn in the same direction as the front wheels, which keeps the car stable during quick lane changes.
Many modern sports cars now have active rear steering, but these early systems were a bit hit and miss. I had it on an S13 and I took it out (fart noise). A lot has been invested in this car. Fenders, big brakes, air ducts, splitters, spoilers, computer screens and TVs on the dashboard. None of that means anything. In fact, it would be kind of boring if this car wasn't so fast (fart noise) and this car was fast like (fart noise). (deep bass music) (laughs) The R32, R33 and R34 GT-Rs are now powered by the legendary RB26DETT inline six-cylinder engine.
In Catholic school terms, looks and all-wheel drive are father and son, making the RB26 the holy spirit. Without a doubt, the engine is the soul of the R34. This six-cylinder engine uses two parallel turbos. That is, each turbo is powered by three cylinders and they work independently of each other. The Twin Garret T28 turbos have a ball bearing and a lighter ceramic exhaust wheel inside which allows them to rev super fast. The result is one bar or 15 pounds of momentum. The RB also gets serious street cred with its individual throttle bodies, unique to the RB engine family.
The RB26 has a cast engine block making it super strong straight from the factory. This made it a tuner's dream. And it's not uncommon to see GT-Rs making 600, 800, or even 1,000 horsepower with an upgraded tune and internals. (car engine roar) The Skyline GT-R is a living legend. The R34 literally, without exaggeration, gave rise to a whole generation of automobile enthusiasts. This is one of the first cars I thought was cool and many of you probably think the same. It's really important. (explosion) Thanks for checking out our new show Bumper2Bumper. Every Tuesday. I'm going to have another car.
