R34 Nissan Skyline GT-R V-Spec II Review // The Holy Grail Of JDM

Jun 06, 2021
Normally at accelerator we start with a one-off introduction of some kind, but today is different because this marks the first year that James and I have been doing accelerator together, so we wanted to take this moment to introduce something a little more. Special, there are not many cars that can be called a living legend, the r34 GTR is one of them and it comes in the form of a wild turbocharged all-wheel drive racer, ask a hooded man on any street corner. and he'll regale you with tuning and modification tales of supercar annihilation and a legion of racing victories.

The one we have today is a GTR with an original engine in terms of shape, which we'll talk about in a minute and whether Thomas placed the order. correctly, we could look at our overnight 35 from Japan later in the video, but let's get back to this because perhaps the most important part of the GTR story is that it was a favorite of the late Paul Walker and contributed to his fame of the car like no one else. However, his contributions did not end there and off screen, Paul was a dedicated humanitarian. He started an organization called Reach Out to the Whole World after he went to provide aid to earthquake victims in Haiti.

Since then, it has become a highly successful humanitarian effort. with Paul's brother Cody at the helm, who when he found out we featured RO in this video was kind enough to send us this message. What's happening? Hello, first of all James and Thomas. I just have to admit that I've been a viewer for a long time. of their channel and it has been incredible to see them grow so quickly in such a short time. They're rolling it out and it's top-notch stuff and I loved every second of it. I just want to thank you so much for Presenting reaching the world today on your channel Paul founded almost 10 years ago to help communities affected by natural disasters around the world and they continue to do so and are able to do so thanks to the wonderful fans and followers of the kart community.

I like them, so if anyone wants to learn more about the charity that Paul founded, it's called reaching out. There is a link in the description below. If they choose support, that would be wonderful; Otherwise, I hope you enjoy the episode and that Thomas James keeps killing. guys Wow, the 34's lead the unconventional too, this has the perfect amount of power and I mean on the right side of the car, the right side of the car right away, this is such a

ial place to be, everything is angled towards the driver and I have a lot of information on my screen right there, which appears to be from the bug that now has a twin-turbo inline six with independent throttle bodies, which means the throttle response is very good and there is almost no turbo lag.

I mean, we say that for modern cars and it's getting tiring, but for a car of this era that's so impressive, it actually runs at 8,000 rpm through its twin-turbo six cylinders. I love the way the boost just moves in the power of the gears. you're so tall you're in gears forever I think this is the first turbocharged car I've ever driven that revs as high as 8,000 rpm tons of power in second and third gear and this is smoke power it didn't take us long A long time to realize that in a world of electric and over-assisted cars, vehicles like the R34 start to feel really necessary immediately, the car feels so analog.
I saw James knock down here, I'm just not afraid and you want to know why it's because the direction is so good. Honestly it's the steering just off centre, it's the immediate feel of the front wheels and when you get to the middle of the corner I feel every bump and wave, it gives you so much confidence and oh my god if I missed good steering like this It surprises me by how well organized it fills the curves. I'm sure it's tight. I normally don't expect to feel this in a 2001 car and these seats are amazing.
I'm reinforced at the corners and still. Comfortable, this particular r34 has been upgraded with Ohlins shocks inspired by the Nismo zone Clubman race

s and is pretty much perfect, but just for the confidence here in the corners, it's very well sorted, you can point the front end like those thin and there are hints that the car is of the era it is, but honestly, I prefer this type of experience to what we are having today because this feels really special. I'm surprised by the amount of horsepower and this feels completely adequate, if not more so. than i need it still feels light in the corners it feels like the suspension is amazing this doesn't feel as old as i thought does it feel old in some ways yes the road noise is bad but that doesn't matter because when You push it, it gives you a lot back.
I know everyone mods them, but I've never driven one fully loaded like this and I don't think I would, it's funny since it costs a hundred and fifty thousand dollars, which is what you'd have to pay to get something like this interesting value proposition. Does it look 150 grand though? James and I are going to go talk about it. Oh, special day, it's a very familiar thing, get off the car on this side, yes, what a beautiful color. For anyone who knows GTRs you know that the V spec looks a little different, this is because you have the kid tuned in Z, this is what it looked like before and this is what it looks like now, and I think you and I can.
They both agree that it is much better because it is incredibly. I love this hood, especially since it's carbon fiber. Okay, there's a lot of real stuff in the air, it goes in here, it comes out here, and it comes out in these little muscular things on the shoulders, yeah. How cool, that's out of the racing car, yes, it's cool, it looks amazing, in fact the whole car is perfectly proportional to the presence. My favorite part though are these limited edition Ray's l M TT 4 wheels, they look amazing and complete the look, yes they are fantastic, this wing. obviously this is adjustable, a little bit of carbon fiber, yeah, so the same thing happens, yeah, CQ and stuff, and it was always, it's perfect, yeah, I love the look of this car, should we talk about the interior?
Yeah, okay, welcome to 2001 in the best possible way, yeah, well the owners realized that because nothing has even changed here, this is completely original, it's Sony, although we have this calculator which is a turbo timer, turbo timer, yes the turbos are hot so what it does is it keeps everything running for a few seconds after the engine runs to keep the oil running to the turbos to increase their life and longevity but less boring , okay, that's really cool, okay, these seats are incredibly awesome, yeah, and well, this is the V spec, so it's actually a slightly different interior.
I think the seats are the same, but the fabric design and colors are so good that I'm going to insist on it because, like the type bar, the new Type R is the only thing I have. I have driven that has seats that are this comfortable and bolstered by the way the balance is i TV, you can actually see seven engine stats running while you drive, that's great for the arrogant m3 of the same era, it doesn't have information, well, could you also set the rev change for when the red light comes on, what change, what revs did you want to change, no, you got it, yes, I'm not good at working with this CBS.
I don't think it will work in Canada, but yes I could tune it with one swipe and drive my er. Yes, the gauge cluster is great. The gt-r Nismo variable steering wheel is nothing more than a steering wheel, which I really appreciate, yes, although this is much more honest. It's super cool and oh guess what our 35 is, it's here, it's not service, right, that's service, come on, oh, okay, thanks, yeah, you're going to run back to Japan, it's got long legs, the r35, there is still the new generation of a monster. The whole city destroys one, now it makes five hundred and sixty-five horsepower and 467 pound-feet of torque.
This 50th anniversary edition costs one hundred and forty thousand Canadian dollars, that's almost sixty thousand dollars more than when it came out ten years ago. The gt-r launch control dates back to this day and remains the most impactful launch control on any car. Oh yes, it's fast, but what else can it do? Handmade twin-turbo V6. Oh, huge amounts of momentum, they really appeared. the boost a couple of years ago gave it a little more power than the early years of the r35 so there is more power but i mean you can tweak the software on an old one and do exactly the same thing to make the power be immediate and very serious, it's such a frenetic engine unless you have an aftermarket exhaust, some intakes actually don't sound that good, I mean it sounds like a v6, a bit of whistling, I almost want to get more out of it. that's like Tesla Model 3 performance fast and it wears out immediately disappoint you that's terrible steering there's more feedback on my PlayStation crash controller the moment you go off center it just disappears it's like someone turned it off I don't have it idea where the front is The wheels are a shame because the steering rules are like the coolest steering wheel in the business, it looks like they've taken it out, kind of like God of War, it looks like a hammer like weapon that unlocks at the end of the game, okay?
You've probably heard journalists say in the past, this feels like driving a video game. That's a tough phrase. What does that mean? I'll explain it to you very, very quickly, this car does everything for you, it creates colossal G forces. and the all wheel drive system is incredibly advanced so it just gives power to whatever wheel needs it but what to me makes it feel very sterile and inert is the steering, as soon as you get past the center you feel the steering assisted. end of the pump and the steering is dead, nothing, nothing to see and I don't like that very much, especially after coming out of the r34, which honestly had some of the best steering I have driven in a long time, even better than my e46 m3.
It doesn't feel like anything, it ruins a lot of the driving for me, that's not to say there isn't something uniquely new to the car. When you really push it, you can feel the system working, moving the power around and generating grip where it should. being neither and that alone in its own way makes it fun, but compared to certain cars it doesn't feel as pure as saying, I don't know and the r34 GTR wasn't just an experience, that car was an education, it was a time. warp in such a good way, this is not the first time we have compared the old with the new in the throttle house and when we compared the offerings, we were very happy with how much the nd captured the magic of the original and I can't say the same . for these and that is annoying, but one place that does impress me is its styling, it is still a GTR, it drives very differently than the r34, although very different, yes, maybe not in a good way, maybe not okay, this is the 50th anniversary, what?
Do you think it's hard to get this badge in blue and stripe? I'm the interior material and the interior material don't underestimate it, let's say ten thousand nine big big big well made as a percentage of MSRP, it's not crazy, I said number and In and of itself, it's quite a bit of pittance money and it gives you some small weird stuff here, no, there's a lot of 50th anniversary stuff inside, but we have these wheels with this weird blue thing that looks like a reflection of the body paint until you look closely, that's not it, and then It's just not good, it has this big white stripe on the front that looks amazing.
I think it looks like a Camaro stripe, a little bit, it's a little American, actually, yes, but overall the shape. This is why I think it looks great, yes Nissan is very good at making timeless looking cars, yes which is very beneficial for them because they never update them, well this is where the 50th anniversary gets a little complicated because it just says 50th anniversary in one place here, which you already know, except for the part that was taken out of a party balloon and taped on. I was just going to pretend it wasn't there, yeah, well you could because you should rip this off if you immediately look horrible.
Other than that super badass, you have these tips here yeah, carbon fiber, okay, interior, the color is very good, it's nice, it's relaxing, it's calming, yeah, actually, it really is, yeah, um, like that that this Alcantara material here is part of the 50th anniversary edition, that's right. the fact that it says 50th anniversary, but that is a very large size, is the most subtle of all things, I am not that proud of the 50th anniversary, plus the 50th anniversary comes with an Alcantara steering wheel, this is an option that It's probably for the best. I guess for longer, otherwise this hasn't changed much.
There was an update a few years ago for this area, but we're going with the comfortable seats, although they are still too narrow. Things that are too narrow are nice, but they are too narrow. in the lower back, yes, they hold you, they hold you very well, they let you know that you just had lunch. Exactly disturbing way the gauge cluster looks attractive but a bit old, everything has been father. look well, don't you see thatat night, I'm actually talking about the night, these buttons on the steering wheel are so off at night you can't even see them, there might be a way to turn them up, the cluster lighting adjuster doesn't Not only the cluster doesn't do this , it's super dark, oh this is great, the steering wheel looks very very good, no, honestly, it's okay, it's outdated, well, I don't find it that bad, the problem is if you come out of this and go into I don't know , a 9 9 to 9 is the same price you would say oh oh yeah that's what cars at this price can look like yeah it's hard to argue with that I mean otherwise it's cool that you have all the technology here and there's a functionality that shows you all your engine information obviously these toggle switches are like you feel like a hero playing with these buttons you like going into launch control mode yeah you look good delete red is cool otherwise, I mean, there's a lot of things here that I remember from my 2008 Nissan Altima, so don't do it.
I claim that it's okay, first of all, flags too strange, it's literally the same thing. I promise, so that's the key. Actually, we should come to a conclusion outside of the car because there are some important things to talk about with this car, yeah, okay, we have to do it. talk what we have to do yes one year and you're already breaking up with me yes fiftieth anniversary this is a lot of money 140 grand that's a lot that's a lot of money yeah what can you get for a hundred grand? you can get us I said a 99 to 911 is already activated and yes, you can use our competition m5 and our 34 to our thirty-five, yes, and one of them would be tuned.
The GTR is supposed to be the sub hundred K card that destroys hundreds more cars and now this is over 100K and the Nismo is even more than it is incredibly expensive, it's a tough buy. I'm not sure I can recommend this particular car, I spent 150 grand on our 34, although if it was soaked in JDM, Lord, yes. and money and money, yeah I don't have any of those things, but I think I felt like a really very special car it was epic, it was really cool, it's still amazing, but if you're going to buy an r35, right? now buy a used one and tune it up let's do this and it's also great what we've avoided so far we still have nothing to say subscribe because this lady says it for you is what she says i have no idea
