Our FAIL turned into "new bike day" for a lucky kid!

May 31, 2021
Welcome to another episode of Burn Peak Express and today we are going to do something a little different but pretty much the same, actually very similar, we are doing a parts bin upgrade, another one this time, it wasn't a neighbor. It wasn't just someone calling me, it was actually Kevin finding this kid who deserves a

bike

. Good boy, he got his parents involved, so he doesn't even know we're doing it and this is the

bike

, here let's start. Taking a look at it and figuring out what we can do to make it a little better. First of all, any child should be

lucky

to have a bike like this.

It's great to start with, you can ride it until you drop. all its capabilities and improve it, it has the perfect structure for a project like this, so this morning I already cleaned the bike and now we are going to disassemble it and prepare it to run, so, as I said, this bike has a very good geometry and it has very good structure, but there are a few things that catch my attention, the first most striking is the three with a three, you have three chain rings in the front and then you probably have eight in the back, no one knows how.

More Interesting Facts About,

our fail turned into new bike day for a lucky kid...

To change the front gears and rear lugs correctly, what ends up happening is that the chain rubs and

fail

s, you have more chain, more gears and a lot of unnecessary things, so what we are going to do is install a three-nine box first to make it a nine speed drivetrain a ring up here nine speed back here the handlebars look like they've been cut from their original width it's going to need some growing so we're also going to put some wider, modern bars in there and a lot of people mentioned this in the last part of the twist update video and that is the fork is really holding these bikes back so I dug deep into Amazon.

This is an air fork with a lockout adjustable compression, it even has a rebound adjustment, that's all the things. that this is not the case, although it is far from a high end fork, it will give you a much better ride than this sr contour fork, it will be a big improvement, so now there is another thing that I would love to do with these. The parts container upgrade spikes are to add a dropper post, but here's the problem with dropper posts. I have tons of 120 millimeter dropper posts lying around, but they all have the switch on the bottom, so for them to work we have to run a wire. the down tube and over the bottom bracket and into the seat tube, a bike has to be built like that.

We can't do that on this bike, there's no way to get the cable in there without drilling holes in the bike frame, which I would really recommend against, so we need a dropper post with an external release pnw component. They sent us one and we ordered them on Saturday. It's here. Also, he recently bought this bike used, so it has a lot of stickers and stuff left over from the previous owner. We're going to give you a new sar, we're going to clean this bike up, we're going to put some Burn Peak stickers on it and we're going to let you customize it and make it yours, so with that I'm going to start ripping parts off this bike and cleaning it up.
It's up so we can start doing some upgrades, so I can't remove the drive side crank arm. These threads are stripped and I don't have a crank set to replace it so what I'm going to do is use the Sawzall to cut the chainrings so I'm having a really hard time taking this bike apart because a lot of grease has dried out and a lot of things are a bit stuck, so I tried to save these grips and take them out. but I can't get this bolt out here so I'm going to work on that oh man I really wanted to save the grips because I wanted to show you a really cool trick that a lot of people don't think about.
This is a way to clean your fists, but look at it, it's the best thing you can clean. Look, we could have made these grips look new, but I have to break them in by hand a little, so we'll replace them. with new grips, so let's remove these stickers, clean them with a sticky substance, get this frame just like it came from the factory. This sticker will come off just fine, oh oh, that's it, you can see there's all this residue. here, let me show you how we remove it, so the first thing you need is for some of the goo to be removed, so you want to soak part of a paper towel or a cloth or something with this stuff and once it's soaked good, you want a plastic putty.
The plastic on the knife is not going to scratch the paint, so you can do this until the cows come home and that is to make it look shiny again, so the first thing I'm going to do while the bike is outside, especially since kids Jumping a lot, we are going to install a chainstay protector and what the chainstay protector does is, firstly, when the chain hits the chainstay it doesn't cause little knocks and secondly, it just makes the bike quieter . I'm going to use an old inner tube to do this. I do this on a lot of my bikes and it works great, so let's move on to the fork.
We're really excited about this cheap air fork and oh that's no good, it's tapered and This I really should have known better, I should have known just by looking at that, that it doesn't have a tapered head tube and this one, of course, has a straight head tube and the top has no bearings from that mesh so Cane Creek which is like the biggest headset maker in the world they are in the way so I'm going to call them and see if they can help us out for today and In the meantime, I'll work on the cassette.
Check out this mega beast range I have news for. you, the new cassette has a lot more range than that, let's remove this quick release skewer, oh don't tell me this is a freewheel, oh that's not good, I didn't even think they sold bikes with freewheels anymore , that? Let's do? I already removed the entire transmission. I got the text from Nate. Should we make an EC 49 that measures 49 millimeters but not 50? Either it's a proprietary head tube or the head tube is oval, guys this is becoming a problem. I talked to Nate at Cane Creek, they were amazing, they tried to find a way to make that fork fit and you can't, we would have to special order a part, we wouldn't get there in time, we are literally screwed, I cut.
They removed the plate with a saw. Now, given enough time, we could fix this bike. We could make it into a great bike, but I would need to special order all sorts of weird little parts that might not fit and it might be weeks before this kid recovers. His bike came back, so he called Kevin, cleared it with his parents, we're going to keep this, we're going to turn it into a bike project here at Burn Peak and eventually we'll put all this stuff on it when I have the right parts. . but for now we have to keep our promise to this kid, so when Diamondback gave me my last bike it was kind of a surprise, so the bike I was using I planned to use for another year, it was marked up and here it is.
It's here, if a kid can fall in love with mountain biking thanks to this bike then I'll be happy to give it to them, but I want to make sure everything is working and safe before I do so, so let's bring it back home. So I had a wireless dropper post on that bike, so now I have to put a wired one on it, so I have to find one of those little cylindrical pulls that go with the end of the cable. Anyone who has lost one knows what I'm talking about. Yeah, it doesn't look like I'm going to find it here, ugh, it never ends, it never, never ends, oh, what's that?
It is the small cylindrical piece that goes at the end of the dropper post. First we will place this lever. It's not the right lever for this dropper post, but okay, here we go, so now we can pull this cable over here. This little guy holds the cable. It seems to work. It seems pretty good. The first thing I have to check is just the gears and brakes. things like that, yeah, the transmission is bone dry, the shift hanger looks bent and we certainly don't want them to start like that, let's give them a new shift hanger, yeah, that's right, we're going to scrub these wheels, we're going to put new sealant on.
On them, I guess the last time this bike came out, someone did a number on it. I wonder who he was. This is our old hanger. A good way to see how bent it is is to place it on something really flat like an anvil, yes that's fine before. We start fine tuning this, I'm going to take it to the bike wash, get all the dirt off, these tires are most likely low on sealant so I'm going to add about two ounces each, any syringe will do. Tubeless tires are much less likely to go flat, but you have to stay on top of them if they are going to work properly.
Let's do one more squirt to get some sealant in there. Now we can adjust all the gears and make sure the bike is fine. marked for this kid, let's see how the shift is now okay, we're greased, so the brakes are really dialed in, we're just going to do a lever and make sure we get all the air bubbles up here, okay. got some good bubbles from that, we need to put a saddle on this and I happen to have a very good size men's small ergon saddle and this is my favorite saddle, it's really very comfortable, thank you ergon, for Of course everyone knows how to remove and reinstall a rear wheel and change a saddle those are the two hardest things you can repair on a bike so these grips oh man I hate nothing more than holding on to someone else's grips it's like grabbing someone else's hair like it's my fist, so I don't care, but if I grab someone, I just can't even think about it.
It gives me chills. That doesn't bother you, I don't know, it bothers me, I'm sorry, so let's put something new on. grips here I have these ergonomic grips, I have some orange valve covers, we need to give them a Burn Peak Ranger District decal, I think it looks really good on the head tube, I think we're going to try to get the bike clean. a new saddle, new grips, brake bleed, 150 millimeter dropper post, it even has a new Fidlock water bottle, I've never drunk from it, now we need to test the bike and make sure everything works well, but you're not going to think this is Raining, I know it's crazy, it never rains here, it's okay, yeah, so we were in a hurry because Kevin is on his way to bring the bike over to the kids so he can present it to them, okay?
The boy is filming with Kevin. They have no idea. They think they are going to recover an old bicycle or something. I mean, the kid doesn't know anything, so let's see how he goes. We did the best we could. We really did it. I had to cut the plate. because it was confiscated. There were all kinds of things wrong with the bike I was trying to fix, so we got you a different one, yeah that's your bike, my goodness, do you want to do your job? And I'm glad of that. My bike, which was stored in the storage unit as a loner, now has its forever home.
They're practically going to ride it, it's going to crash and for me that's a big victory even though this didn't turn out as planned. I hope you enjoyed the video. I hope you learned something. If you want to see us update that other bike when the parts arrive, be sure to subscribe. Thanks for riding with me today and I'll see you next time.
