Local student's hardtail gets a parts bin overhaul!

Jun 06, 2021
Welcome to another episode of Burn Peak Express. I'm Seth and today we're going to do something a little different, but pretty much the same. It's a part of improving the spin. A

local

mountain biker who goes to Brevard College. I was talking to him. For this bike, he bought some pedals and cranks, things like that that his bike needs and as you know, most college

student

s don't have a lot of room to work, they don't have that many tools, so I said, you know what I'll throw in. the

parts

for you and I may have some additional

parts

that we can fix this bike up with because this is exactly the type of bike that I love to have in the shop.

This is a shining example of a sub 1000

hardtail

, I mean it has everything you need and nothing you don't need and on a

hardtail

plus where you have these big tires you still get all the things that are really good about a hardtail, all the responsiveness, but the tires take some of the pain away because they are big and comfortable, so I can't wait to make this bike even better for a

local

with parts we have here, so today is a great day, let's get started, so I like to start working on a bike that is clean so yesterday I took it to the bike wash station and got all the dirt off it but the bike still has some scratches and it still has some things that are definitely wrong so first of all it's a cool bike, I've never heard of it framed but it says it's framed marqueta and it's a place in the upper peninsula where the tires even have the state of Minnesota on them and that might be a turn off to some people because here in the United States we think of Minnesota as a place with airplanes and farms and stuff. and you think, well, mountain biking must suck there, that couldn't be further from the truth, there are big rocks everywhere, it's anything but flat and it's not at all stinky, it's cool that a company proudly shows that the Bike is entry level and has good parts. but they're not special, you know, it's a sram x7 derailleur.

I have the sram xo out of the p7 and I think I'm going to plug them in and let's update it. He provided a crank. you need it, this is loose and doesn't seem to want to tighten it, it's a good time to do some work there, attach them with a new bottle cage and this lock on the grip, I mean I don't even know how this happens to a lock. -As for the grip, I mean, look at this, it's not secure, it's got a little bump up there. I think we're going to take some liberties and remove that so it looks a little cleaner.

The wheels are not straight. Let's correct them. there's a fender here and you can hear noise and you think, well, it's the tire rubbing, it's not really the tire, it's those little hairs on new tires, I'm not sure what to do about it, I mean, you have to do it . Do something right, your chainstay has taken some serious abuse so we'll attach a chainstay protector to it. If we give this bike the drop test, I mean it makes all kinds of noises when we're done with it, it's going to be a much quieter bike, I think we've got what we need to start with, a lot of water got in, okay, this is interesting.

I have never seen a handlebar with this cut out, yes this side is like this too when you are in this situation and I don't understand something what you go and do is text a handlebar that is specific for a grip that allows for greater crush on the outside of the bar, so Pat says this isn't a problem and you can run the normal lockout on grips with As long as you have that piece at the end to prevent it from sampling your core, I'm going to rely on his word so while we have all the parts the next thing we're going to do is put on a nice chain health guard which we're going to use an inner tube for so this is going to make the bike a lot quieter.
You can see some of the camera label, but it adds character. We're going to put some cranks in here, so we have to clean up. plumbing there was quite a bit of water in there, a shop had told him he needed new bottom bracket bearings, but that's not the case, these bottom bracket bearings are fine, wasn't the shop being dishonest if he was replacing any type of cranks in It's standard procedure at a bike shop to replace bottom bracket berries because it's a preventive maintenance task that doesn't really cost much more and benefits the customer a lot, but in this case the bearings are fine and we don't have a replacement for them on hand. , so we're going to leave them, they look good, super soft, so I had a little bit, I don't know what it's called, sticking out of the stem, that bothers me, so I'm going to cut this off. minimal peek so it's flush with the stem, that's fine, I'll definitely clean it up every time, someone says, hey seth, you should use a pipe cutter.
If you watch my other videos I explain why we don't use a pipe cutter I guess we should reinstall it so leave these bolts loose until we can put it on the ground and look at it so I've gone over this I don't know how many times but if you're new here, grind wheels. You are straightening the wheel again, if it is really bent there is nothing you can do to align it, but if it just wobbles a little each way you can straighten it with a spoke wrench and an alignment stand. The way it works is we move these little bumps closer and closer when you feel it rubbing on one side, you know it's tilted and then you can adjust the tension of the spokes to straighten them out again.
If you don't have a leveling stand, I have all kinds of tricks. in my videos to upgrade your wheel it's not that bad it's ok we just ran into a little problem, I assumed that because this bike came with a sram drivetrain there was a sram cassette in there but that's not the case , this is a shimano type cassette. It's made to fit into the body of a Shimano driver and we just can't install it there so I need an 11 speed cassette to part spin. Oh I have a 46 tooth 11 speed cassette that will fit and this 46 tooth is even bigger than the cassette I had, you will still receive this derailleur which has a parts bin, it is good in my time with the box, they supplied many pieces and now they are going to good homes, so now we will put on this wonderful new 11 speed derailleur. chain we're going to put there, oh yeah, that looks good, Pat said it should have a solid end grip to continue here, we're going to slide them over the college

student

s, they didn't provide them, but we're going to hook them.
Taking them out of the parts bin we don't have to do much, I just have to connect the cable and adjust the tension. This frame has internal cable routing and what that means is that some of the bike's cables go inside. the frame tube to hide it and make it look better, usually there is a tube inside the frame that guides it but sometimes there isn't, it's so rare that I find a bike like that that I almost never ride. This tool here is ir 1.2 so I imagine that means internal routing and what you find inside the kit is a bunch of wires with magnets on the end and now we're going to take this little magnetic wire and feed it in here. we're going to take this magnet, grab it and guide it all the way through, how sick is that, so now we can just tape the wire to this and just run it through the frame and voila, we have it now.
We're getting into the fun stuff that anyone can make pedals if you have pedal washers use them it helps the pedal not get stuck so the way this wrench got like this was I walked up to it and started chewing on it out of control and I put it in my hands and went to town. I do not know what happened to me. This is a specialized Z cage. I took off its old bottle cage and it's a side loading cage, so put the bottle like that. pull it to the left, you can't pull it out on the right, you can only put it in to the left, so you crouch down, pull it this way and it comes out, so it's got a little upgrade on its bottle holder, man. these valve caps just aren't going to work, yes they match the tire, but he has these blue petals.
He went through all these problems. We have the BCM plastic container. Now they match the petals. I have a lizard skin gear strap here. This is pretty. complicated gear strap, let's look at this, so all of this has grip, it's all rubbery, so come down here, it fits really well, in fact, we can tighten it really tight, so finally we have these little furry guys that hit the side of the So How do we deal with that? We could take the fender off, but it's probably there for a reason. I estimate removing them will take between five and six minutes.
This bike has been ridden properly so these things have worn out. tire but they're on the sidewall like I've never had a bike tire where they were so prevalent on the sidewall before I was almost done with this this didn't take long no, there's still one here it's Okay, let's try it now. Yes, they are no longer there. I imagine those hairs have no function for the actual tire. They are probably part of the manufacturing process. If any of you know what those hairs are for, please let me know. The bike is ready, I think it's ready to hit the trails.
We replaced those grips that were all broken and mangled. I installed all its parts. Its connecting rods. Your pedals. We replace your cassette. Its complete drivetrain really gave you a shift belt and everything you need. to ride the trails without a backpack hey we even ran a cable through its frame and look at this it doesn't make any noise it's so dialed in now this bike was making all kinds of noises from everywhere when we first bought it . Now you can just give it hell and it doesn't make any noise so with that let's look at it so I think this bike looks really good we know it doesn't make any noise and we know it's dialed so I think Jake will be excited. but first I have to get this out on the road and test it.
If you've been following this channel, you know I had some sort of major injury here on my foot. I'm going to do what I can on this bike, two things. It just happened, clap your hands big, second of all, I almost fell, I thought I was going to fall when I was at the end of the skinny, I felt like I was going to go over the edge and I crossed the entire line for the first time. Since my injury in October maybe that wasn't the safest way to do it on someone else's bike, but I mean, if you've been here, you know how we do things.
I'm very happy to be able to do these parts. I've updated the videos again because it's about fixing someone's bike in the community and getting them more excited about getting out on the trails, Jake. I hope you like your new improved and repaired bike. For now, they will meet him at some point. I'm glad I survived that little fragment. I'm glad the bike turned out so well that even Oscar put in a little effort and if you like this type of video I started a parts upgrade playlist basically every time we go and do some bike upgrades on this channel, it goes in the playlist and so you can watch them all at once and if you enjoy this channel, make sure to subscribe to Burn Peak Express.
This is our second channel. We make more improvised casual content like this anyway. Thanks for riding me today, I'll see you. the next time
