MTB Overhaul! Totally replacing everything on my bike for the cause

Jun 07, 2021
Welcome to another episode of Burn Peak Express and today we're doing something a little different but pretty much the same. It's pretty much the same be

cause

we're doing a partial spin update but it's different be

cause

we're not taking parts from parts. bin to upgrade my

bike

, what we're actually going to do is remove parts from my personal

bike

and upgrade the parts bin with them, let me explain, so if you've seen any of our old videos you know we're taking someone with a bike old that needs some upgrades, we take parts that are lying around and fix the bike, but in order to do that we need a new supply of parts to go in the trash, so my bike is great, good quality.

It's working fine, there's nothing wrong with it, but I have a bunch of new parts here that are even better, so before I start today I have to take my bike apart. I have to take every little part off because We're going to go over with a fine tooth comb the linkage, the bottom bracket,

everything

is coming off and some of the old parts are going back in, but most of it will be new, so take a good look. look at this bike because This is the last time it will look like this, how did it get like this?

Maybe it's a disaster. There's a good chance we're going to lose power today, so you'll never find a better opportunity to clean your bike thoroughly than when they're doing an

overhaul

like this because they took all the parts off, you can take the linkage apart, you can go in there, clean all the bearings, check if any of them need to be replaced, you can get into where the bearings go, clean them all. If you don't do that once a year, the bike will never perform to its full potential, but now we're going to put all the parts back together and on a bill like this I want to put the rear shock on.

At first it makes

everything

a little more complete and this time I took out my air shock and put a Marzocchi coil shock on it and I don't have much experience with coil shocks. I understand the theory. I understand how. Do they work. One of the advantages of a coil shock is that it is actually very sensitive. It gives you a very good ride. It really glues the rear wheel to the ground, but one of the downsides is that this spring doesn't have the features I want for myself. weight and my bike I have to buy a different spring.

I hope we get it right on the first shot for now. I know he looks sick. We are going to put in a new bottom bracket to reinstall the crankset and I have an oval chainring many of you have been asking me to try using one of these so the way an oval chainring works is when you have the least amount of power in your stroke, it's at a low speed when you have the most power in your stroke it's at a higher speed so it makes your climbing more efficient or at least that's the theory.
I'm going to try this from one up and see how it goes. I don't know what I'm doing and how. to correctly orient an oval plate I have it oriented the same I think it's something I just saw on the internet maybe not maybe it was like that yes and then it has the switch maybe one more click ah I don't know logically this yes It makes sense, I'll do it, so the next thing we are going to install is the fork and now we are going with a Marzocchi fork, why am I doing everything Marzoki on the bike and the reason is because Marzocchi is Fox, same engineers, same shocks.
Many of the same parts inside the fork but are much simpler. I'll give you an example here is the air here is the rebound if you have a Fox fork this will look very similar so you have compression that's it and I love the simplicity and I want to try it and see if it feels like a fox 36. I want to see if it Feel the same and see what all the fuss is about before you put it on the bike. I have to cut the tube. down and I have to screw on the multitool tube because one up top is still out of stock in their shank kits so I'm going to get to it so I like the length of my old legit tube and so we'll do it.
Same on the mercadoki, so every time I cut a fork tube, someone in the comments says why don't you use a tube cutter and there are very good reasons why I don't use a tube cutter in the first place if it's the handlebars. tube and it's carbon you can't use a tube cutter a tube cutter will just blow it to pieces if it's an alloy tube like this I can use a tube cutter and you know what I'm going to use today cutter and I'm going to show you why I normally don't. The way a pipe cutter works is that you line it up where you want to cut the pipe, squeeze it, and then mark the pipe so you can continue going around. and round and score deeper and deeper you will hear some little crackles and your tube will come loose nice and clean in most cases when I use a tube cutter there is a little tiny ridge right here and it's barely noticeable but that's where they are the stems. machined very precisely and if you slide this over it, it will catch on that ridge and scratch the inside of the shank badly, so what you have to do is go around this with a bench grinder or a file to get rid of that little ridge and, if you use the hacksaw you will never have the ridge, so since the start of the pandemic, several different bike parts became unavailable or out of stock, starting with all of them, one of those bike parts is the ones on the top shank in which you can natively attach the multi-tool.
It bothers people when I do this with new suspension forks, but it doesn't really affect, it doesn't affect the strength and then I can thread a sweet multi-tool in there, one thing we love to do here at Burn Peak is grease the balls of everything, usually It's good practice to grease the balls of everything, but if you put grease in the wrong places or if you put too much it can be a place where dirt can build up incredibly perfectly, so for the cockpit I have a set of 1up carbon handlebars from 35mm, like my hardtail, only on the hardtail I reduced it to 765 and I kind of regret wanting them. a little bit wider, so I'm going to go up to 770.
So with a piece of carbon fiber tubing, as soon as I start squeezing it to get a score, it actually warps the carbon fiber and tightens it, so yeah you're spinning. It will flex in all directions and weaken the fabric, which is why you don't cut carbon fiber with a pipe cutter, it's just not designed for that. We're going to install the handlebars and this will start to look like this. a bike, so I have some new Crank Brother synthesis carbon wheels. Now Crank Brothers has a very storied history in wheel manufacturing. It didn't work so well the first time, but many hold them in high regard, basically they are tuned carbon. wheels, so by adjusting the tension of the spokes they allow the front wheel to have a little more flexibility than the rear wheel;
In other words, the rear wheel is stiffer than the front wheel, so when you're turning it allows the wheel to flex a little and help you gain a little more traction when cornering. It's time to put some rubber on these tires. I have some Vitoria labyrinths, so the question is: can I do this without spilling sealants on the rim? right, let's just put the bead in by now it should have jumped that was one of the biggest disasters that ever happened here that had never happened to me before in my life it just wouldn't show up I kept putting more and more air in it didn't I was reviewing we're filming we're doing all kinds of things that might be the dumbest things I've ever done in my life.
I may have ruined my hand too, it's completely numb. Here, if it goes over 40 psi and you didn't hear the click, it's probably in place or you need to check something. We had caulking on the roof. Sealant all over my face. Basically, sealant on the worst possible things. Things will never be the best. Same here since the great sealant massacre of 2020. Alex informed me that explosions like this are like a rite of passage in bike shops and you have to buy beer for everyone in the shop if it happens. This is my store and yes, let's drink lacroix let's move on and get back on the bike it's time to build a chain this oval chain ring looks crazy crank brothers stamp seven petals and they're going to murder us this is a reverb axes of rockshox is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever bought, you press this button, it's like a wire dropper lever, it feels exactly the same.
My magura seatpost which was wireless works great but when you press it there's a little bit of a delay on this one you can hear it's instant so let's put this on and then we'll put on a saddle and we have a saddle Ergon enduro riding gear with oil slick rails, meaning the rails look super cool when it's light. it reflects on them, I don't know if it affects the performance, but I really like this saddle, so I'm going to race it again on this bike, oh my god, this is so sick, so that's it, our bike is together, we can take it.
Hit the trails and see how you feel, check off the rest of our settings and man I'm excited to feast your eyes on my new bike so here we are in Canooga it just started raining hopefully it will stop in a few minutes and we can. Going up the climb I notice a couple of things, so firstly the oval chainring feels great, it releases when you are at the weakest part of your stroke and then gives you that power as you press down , so I'm liking it, I don't know if it's a must for all my bikes yet, but I guess we're going to discover the coil shock, you feel like you're glued to the ground even when you're climbing and it's easier to climb with a shock of air, that's for sure, I don't know if it's just because I don't have it set up yet, but it feels slow, but on the couple of gradient changes we went down it feels really good, I can't. wait until we have a real descent and see how this goes so let's go back up and find some shelter and then when this stops I don't know what we're doing we can't take a break we don't really like it we just want to do a demonstration of my bike for people, so I guess we won't be riding anymore today, but I will say on the little descent I did.
This coil feels amazing. You will have to remove it. My bike will take the losses on the climb because downhill it is so quiet that it is surprisingly quiet, you can't hear anything and the bike is like stuck to the ground in the corners, it felt incredible. I definitely won't be changing this coil. to one with a different spring rate, this is it for me with my full suspension. I hope you enjoyed building this bike with me today and seeing the limited amount of riding we were able to do with it. These red Burn Peak t-shirts are on sale now.
I have been purchasing several t-shirts because they are so comfortable and if you want to purchase one, I left a link below. It's always fun to build a bike and go out and ride it in the beautiful Asheville weather. Thank you for traveling with me today. See you next time, should we make up a new motto like here at Burn Peak Express? The weather is terrible every day. Here at Burn Peak Express we ruin camera equipment. I lost it on that curve. I didn't know what the hell just happened. So as not to interrupt the journey, I guess I'm not
