Mercedes-AMG S63 Coupe | Chris Harris Drives | Top GearApr 07, 2020
Now everyone knows what an s63 is, its Mercedes Bigfoot or a sedan car that will go a million miles an hour, but very few people know about this car, it's the s63
coupeand it's kind of forgotten among the hordes of Porsches and Lamborghinis and Bentleys that operate in that price range but I'm telling you this could be one of the best cars on sale now of course it's not cheap it's over a hundred thousand pounds and with options I don't admit how much this one is but it is the most Beautiful product, everything here is of the best quality, it is on a shortened S-class chassis with air suspension and they are familiar twin-turbocharged five and a half liter V8 which has now been replaced by the twin four liter V8 The e63's turbocharger is confusing.
I know what I'm saying. I don't know of a car that better combines speed and comfort. I have driven all the cars that are supposed to. tell everyone now t This is a pretty old car, in fact, it feels like a used car now, but the engine is the old-school twin-turbo V8, 5.5-liter, 585 horsepower, 664 pound-feet of torque. He's an uptight monster. The
gearbox is a bit slower than it is now, but I'm telling you, this is the powertrain of choice for this type of car and with the shorter wheelbase in an S-class, it's a much more nimble machine.
I can't tell you how well balanced it is between comfort and speed on UK roads, this is the most impressive GT car I've ever driven. I'll tell you what made it so good it's just a level of comfort and quiet and a general feeling of not really being in a car but that proves a big problem when you're doing car videos because there's no way for me to say listen to what quiet that's good, i'll do it now that's my calm face, isn't it? Now I'll do my travel comfort face. I mean, proper comfort is weird I've never driven a car like that you see things your eyes say oh that's a bump and when you go over it it's okay you get a little bit of noise like that and it's okay the cumulative effect of that silence and that comfort of
gearis that you usually come out after a 3 hour drive cooler than when you start that doesn't happen in an audi a8 that doesn't happen in a BMW 7 series it only happens in this car and when you think about it when you're stressed and have a lot to do, it's an amazing trick, but coupled with the wacky levels of comfort and lack of fatigue. this car is littered with toys in fact its a lot of fun digging into the details of this car like i have to stop and show you the s63
coupeits all about the details its often accused of looking like a c- a bit larger. class or a Kupe class but don't look at these lights here those are individual LEDs and on top of them are Swarovski crystals this thing reads the road ahead that's why it says intelligent LED light system don't get that on a c class no you don't come from the side here now the next time you see one of these on the road if you do because they're pretty red look at that line on the side this kind of chamois starts at the front of the front wheel and goes to the rear an unbroken line all the way way back behind the rear wheel and it gives this beautiful tension to the side of the car.
I think it's fantastic, no arches to mar, but still looks a bit wide and punchy. The trunk lid has this spring tail here that's built into the metal structure acts as a spoiler and produces a nice reduction in lift ok what I love is this extra crease here so the line continues from the trunk lid and rear panel here this rear quarter panel just has this little hint of a crease here just a tape of that line in its level of detail but i find this car fascinating because people think it's just a big coupe from Mercedes a DS and it's totally separate from the rest of the range that's why the little elements at the rear get hot the screen is so small they're invisible they're not on a normal Mercedes this is a reminder of the fact that Mercedes-Benz has always been a maker of the best cars in the world and they can be quite expensive, now any big luxury car cabin should be full of toys. and stuff to play with and this is one of the best I think all the features I've enjoyed over 17,000 miles of living with this car this is my favorite the driver can control the passenger seat effectively it's like being in the db5 and pretend you're james bond so you press left and you can move your passenger back forward up down look i'll just say to the ceiling now if you have little kids there's nothing better than winding them up just sending them . and down and around you can also control your heated seat and you control your scarf this thing has the fan heater that goes into your neck like it does on an SL so effectively you can heat and cool the other person in the car in the front with your as much as you like.
The seat itself is so adjustable that I'll let Neil show you what happens on the screen, but you can have everything from active bolsters, passive bolsters, move everything in and out, it's really remarkable if you can. In order to feel comfortable in this car, you cannot culturally feel in any car. The only problem is that if you're a jerk like me, when you find the correct driving position some of the dials go dark, in fact they are so-so. cut off the top of the steering wheel but that doesn't matter because there's a head up display that i can read on the screen so that's ok i'll just use the HUD here there are two main displays like on an s-class i don't really like can complain The level of information is clear, precise, not too fancy, but enough theater to make me feel.
I mean something very expensive. The leather, look at the leather. This chunky baseball glove for the Zinio brown leather is fantastic. whiskey right I'm not going to try that again there's one here okay there's a glass that sits in your cubicle there when you open it which I find to be a bit natural like me. I don't really like crystals. It's glossy it's the classic
mercedes-benz gloss because it opens both sides it does it the same way how is that possible when there's no visible hinge? I still mean what snake oil, isn't it amazing? These are open here to give you a police stand the other thing I love is that you fold it down and that's where you take your CD out but that doesn't mean you can't have a drink and take out a CD at the same time which is a big flop from
mercedes-benz and i h hope you look at that for the facelift what else do we have?
We've got all the buttons down here for the chassis controls for the gearbox to be a sport or comfort manual, but most important of all is a little signal here on the tweeter. All speaker covers are metal. there's one up there for surround sound there's a few over here the firmest i think this thing is the best car wifey i've ever heard there's secondary support in the footwells and then the top end comes right out over the scoot there sounds amazing it's such a compromised environment and i know there are companies like name i love it for home high five making Alturas cars for other car makers they're making a lot of noise about it Mercedes doesn't make any noise PR noise about the: these cars are Hands down the best I've ever heard in a car, so the combination of silence, ride comfort, and seating like you're in a live music auditorium makes it the most compelling long-distance vehicle.
Vehicle I have been in there is enough room for two small people in the back. the seats a little further forward can get to the adults in the back but not very long you wouldn't want a long ride in them the boots are a decent size and the back seats are heated too the butt warmers are Critics, I guess how can you tell they're kind of excited about it. I'm lovin 'it. I've lived with this for a long time and I think it's amazing. Anyway, enough of the static review. Let's get back on the road. It's a big, big, heavy old boat, but once you start driving it down a road, you wouldn't believe how small it can fill up.
Suspension: Your compliance helps you when the surface becomes uneven. There is no problem, you just keep pushing, keep picking up speed and you can enjoy driving it fast. I mean you really can. In fact, it's so good to drive fast that you can even do this with it. Driven like in the city so let me be quiet for a minute and let you see a two tonne plus Mercedes-Benz sliding around a wet circuit somewhere in Wales but to me it looks magnificent it's just the best car that no one ever hinder or simply believe you
