IKEA HACK | How to Build a Bench from Kitchen Cabinets

Jun 10, 2021
Hi everyone, I'm Christina from DIY Moms Convention and today I want to show you how to

build

a

bench

out of

kitchen

cabinets

. I haven't shared it here yet but on my blog I have recorded that we are converting our

kitchen

dining space into a more casual cozy breakfast nook space the reason we are doing this is because you may remember that last year we converted our front formal living room into a dining room, so it seemed really redundant to have two spaces that were sort of semi-formal and both were large rectangular ones. dining tables, so we decided to turn our kitchen dining area into a really cozy breakfast nook with a round table and built-in

bench

.

I've seen some people do this on Pinterest and online in other places where they built a built-in window seat. or a bench built into the kitchen

cabinets

, specifically the ones above the refrigerator, so I wanted to try this and today I want to show you how I did it. Let me share with you how I made a bench for our kitchen. of kitchen cabinets to start with, I bought two over the refrigerator cabinets from Ikea, we use IKEA in our own kitchen and I really love how easy they are to put together and how cost effective they are, so I bought two of the 30 inch wide ones by 15 inch high above the refrigerator cabinets, this 15 inch height is perfect because you only have to add a few inches to make it the standard vent height or chair height, which is around 18 inches.

More Interesting Facts About,

I got the 30 inch width because two of them were really nice. fit on this wall in our future breakfast nook, then I made a base for the cabinets with some simple twos and fours. I just made sure to create a box that was the same width and length as my two cabinets. Assembled I simply cut the pieces with our miter saw and also created two braces to attach to this frame vertically so everything was nice and sturdy and then my husband used his large nail gun to put everything together, honestly it was the only thing I I asked him to help me for this DIY because I really hate that big nail driven in after we built the base, a friend and I moved those kitchen cabinets on top of the base like that just to make sure they fit and I did which was fantastic and then the I screwed right in the middle here to make sure they didn't move back and forth and then nailed them to my 2x4 base with this finishing nail gun, after that I found some trim that was the same. height like my two by four, about three and a half inches tall and I trimmed it and mitered the corners so I could put it on top of my two by four to create a nice finish on the base a for this cabinet.

I really like how it turned out that it made the bottom of the cabinet look nice and finished. I love how the mitered corners look on this bench and after nailing everything into place with my nail gun, I simply edged all the seams and nail holes and painted. I left it white with a full brush, then put the doors on. I love how this bench will offer us so much storage space and then I purchased a 2 inch tall by 2 foot wide piece of foam on Amazon. I'll leave it. a link to that in the description box below.

I used some leftover indoor/outdoor fabric we had from our camper and cut two pieces that were a half inch larger on all sides, then my piece of foam and then cut. a few pieces to go around the edges of my foam that were 3 inches tall so 2 inches plus 2 half inch seam allowances and then after cutting all of those pieces I simply sewed my reinforcement section here to make sure that I wrapped it all around my bench seat cover and then sewed it to the big pieces using a 1/2 inch seam allowance so it looked like this and had these little nooks in the corner and then I sewed my really simple benches .
I just turned it inside out and after that big piece of foam on the inside I decided to make this covered seat non-removable and zipperless just because it was so easy to sew, plus I'm using indoor/outdoor fabric so this kind of the fabric washes very, very easily, the final touch for this bench seat cover was to sew it by hand using a kind of blind stitch like this. I also love this neutral color because we will be able to change the look of this built-in bench with pillows whenever we want, so we chose to not have our bench actually built-in.
I could slide it wherever I wanted, which I really like because I tend to change my decor a lot, but if you wanted to. To make this more integrated, you could just nail it directly into the wall studs and that's how our DIY bench turned out. I am very happy with it and can't wait to share with you how I finished. at notebook breakfast thank you so much for watching this tutorial today I hope you found it interesting let me know in the comments below if you have ever seen this made and what you think of our dining bench made from kitchen cabinets if you like this video Please like and subscribe to my channel for more decoration and DIY ideas.
