You love it and I hope you are inspired if you have a narrow

hallway

or

small

entryway

like I do to add some extra

storage

. Let's get started. This is what our main entry

hallway

originally looked like now when we built our house in 2013. We designed it ourselves. Mostly I love everything about our house, except I don't like how small we made this entryway. The door is too close to the stairs and then you enter this narrow hallway and we always have so many shoes piled up in here. and I'm going over the shoes and it's a disaster.

I left this messy so you can get an idea of what it looked like from day to day and then we have the hall closet so tiny there are no shelves in here. So everything was very messy and disorganized here too, so first things first. I went to Ikea again. I love their storage solutions and knew I wanted to find some type of shoe storage solution. First I had something on my mind. I found this little shoe rack and thought it would be perfect to put in our closet. Perfect dimensions. Then I looked at all those shoe racks.

We now had one in the main entrance. We got rid of that one. It had a little different style, but then. I saw this one as a little funky, but I thought maybe there was a way to use it for our entryway and I loved that it was only about six inches deep and it was perfect, so back home I brought the shoe rack and grabbed a pair. of these because I measured our wall and knew two of these IKEA cabinets would fit on the wall and I wanted as much shoe storage space as possible. I have also used them not only to store shoes but also to store accessories.

We wear a lot of hats and gloves here in Canada in the winter, so these are great for that too. They are quite easy to assemble like all IKEA furniture. You only need a couple of tools. Much patience. Turn up the music. I enjoy building, so next I grabbed my stud finder. I found a couple of studs on the wall in our hallway and I need something common to covet. You can renew it wherever you want and attach them to the beams. I then took all the drawer fronts and cabinet sanded them with this little palm sander and then used some primer.
This primer I'm using is from Cloverdale and it's a good adhesive primer, nice and tacky, so I primed both cabinets around the frames and to put the primer on I just used a small foam brush. I like the finish I get with these foam rollers. I did the same with the drawer fronts, so I just sanded them and then brushed them with primer with a foam roller. and just make sure if you're doing this you let everything dry as long as possible between coats so after applying the primer I took my favorite white which is currently whisper white and also painted the cabinet and then put the backings on.
Then you might be wondering why you're painting white cabinets white. It's because I wanted them to match the moldings in my hallway exactly. They were a little out of place to begin with, so I wanted them to be the exact same white color as my hallway. I don't know where I put the pictures for this, but I painted about 2/3 of my wall with a white bear whisper in a satin finish. and then I'll go ahead and add a baseboard to the wall to do my DIY. board and batten so this is where the project started to get a little frustrating so I nailed this piece in but realized it was a little low and was covering up the little screws on the light fixtures.
I had to remove everything, I cut the nails and then I loosened those light fixtures and moved a little bit towards the trim and then I was able to pull the light, the little light switches, not the fixtures, the light comes on up and over the trim because I'm going to try to kind of pull these switches all the way out and forward so I can trim them now just be careful if you're working with the light switch is you're very careful with the live wires make sure everything is off so you don't get electrocuted. so I won't go into all the details of my DIY board and batten.
I basically use trim my nail gun, lots of wood filler and caulk. I have a full tutorial for this on my YouTube channel and blog and I'll link it to them in the description box below. I went ahead and removed all of my daughters' beautiful art from this wall. I'm going to come up with some other kind of art system, so stay tuned. I just made sure to save everything. For the new art wall I also removed this mirror because we will soon be putting a mirror on the other wall. I can't wait to show it to you and then one thing became the next and I decided this wall needed board too. -and-lath then I took some wood filler and filled that small crack between the two shoe racks because I wanted it to look like one shoe rack.
I used wood filler in all the cracks of my board and batten too to make Now everything looks nice and finished, this takes a lot of time but it sure looks a lot better in the end. I then sanded all the wood filler to make sure all the joints were nice and smooth. I had to sand a little. of this molding on the left so it would match and then this is how I went ahead and trimmed around the switch box so that it would stick out from that wall and match the molding, once everything was filled with wood and sounded, I took a caulking gun and bent around where the molding meets the wall, so wood putty and caulk are my best friends when it comes to DIY because even if you're a little off with the measurements, you can fill all those cracks and seams, smooth everything out and then once you paint over that, it looks really nice and that's how I made my shoe racks look integrated.
I just took the trim down to the top of the shoot cabinets, everything will be one color and I think it will look It's great when everything is done so once I did all the filling, sanding and caulking I took my foam roller one more time and that whispering white bear color and painted everything. I found that after a coat of paint on any finish job you can look to see if there are any kind of holes or things you missed and you can fix things as needed, then I bought a small quart of shell gray Valspar so I accidentally painted too much up on the wall, that was another thing that wasn't bad and I had to buy a small bead of this paint to cover that accidental white that I then painted like the rest of my board and batten.
I'm finishing the wall with a small piece of molding at the top. I think this is one. inches and a half by eleven sixteen and I love the look then all the covering lights came back on and I think this looks really cool when they're floating above the trim so once that wall was basically done I went over our closet and took out everything that could be donated and that we were no longer using. My husband and my children helped me and we cleaned some of the same with their shoes. I went through all of those, we purged some of the ones we donated.
Those and I organize them in the back of the closet and clean them when the IKEA shoe rack fits very well. Always be sure to bring your tape measure when purchasing things to store to make sure they fit well in your space. and then I went in and put the taller things in, like the slide, the boots, and the rain boots, so I went to Walmart and found these fantastic baskets, they were the perfect size for our closet and I loved how they had that natural look. look with a string on the top, two of them fit on the top of our closet.
I just bought some shelves from Home Depot and installed them on top of our closet and put some seasonal things in those baskets like for the IKEA shoe racks on the east wall I put the rest of our shoes in here so I find that I can put two pairs of adult size shoes in here, as you can see, maybe not the biggest ones that my husband has, but two adult size shoes and then two. or three or sometimes even four pairs of children's shoes in each of these, it's about time for this rug to go, goodbye, we've had it for seven years and then I went ahead and vacuumed the hallway here, mopped it and I did. nice and neat, okay this mirror has to be my favorite piece here.
I found it on Wayfarer, it's so big it's like 36 inches wide and I love this scale to put on top of cabinets. I love a mirror that is about half the width. From the console below and then on top of the cabinets I put a basket to store things like keys and phones, some artificial greenery, some books and a candle. I also found this runner from Wayfarer. I'll be sure to leave you a link and everything else in this video you can buy online in the description box below I love the turquoise and gray color combination of course and I also loved the length.
I decided to put a couple of impressions here, these I found of the little Crown Prince. butterfly prints just to add a little interest to this wall but not make it too overwhelming so here's a reminder of what our entry hallway looked like before we tackled it and this is what it looks like now. I'm so excited about how this makeover turned out. As it turns out, I think it's a really good combination of practical and pretty. It gives us more room to store shoes because we have the shoe rack, but the shoe rack is nice and narrow so we can still walk down this hallway easily and not feel like it's too messy even though I had some issues with all the work of finishing and some of the measurements and things.
I was very happy with the outcome of this built-in look. Here's a look at what our closet looked like then and now. our closet now looks again, storage and organization are everything, so I'm so happy we finally put some shelves in here. I really like baskets for that seasonal storage and definitely shoes with the layers of shelves on the bottom work much better, so in the baskets I have things like sandals and seasonal things that we don't wear right now in our Canadian winter, as well as other accessories. This is a giant mirror that offers the perfect place to check my hair and makeup before I leave.
It's also a great place to use. like a little storage for phones and keys and of course I love all this extra shoe storage space for our family. Thank you very much for watching this video.
