SMALL ENTRYWAY MAKEOVER with Ikea hack for TONS of hallway storage!Feb 27, 2020
Hi everyone, I'm Christina from DIY mommy calm and today I'm going to share with you our little entry room
makeoverthat has loads of hidden
storage. like two days tops and then it turned into a week and then two weeks and then three weeks and it's finally done but it seems like it was one of those DIYs where so many little things went wrong and it was getting so frustrating but it reminded me That's the nature of DIY, sometimes you'll probably make little mistakes, but you can probably fix those mistakes too, learn something and finish your project and be very proud, so I can't wait to share this one with you guys I hope. you love it and i hope you are inspired if you have a narrow
entrywaylike mine to add some extra
storage. let's get started This is the original look of our entry
hallwaynow that we built our home in 2013. we designed it ourselves I mostly love everything about our home except I don't like how
smallwe made this
entryway, the door it's too close to the stairs and then he walks into this narrow hallway and we always have so many shoes piled up here and I'm stepping on the shoes and it's a mess I left this messed up so you can get an idea of what it looked like from day to day to you and then we have hallway closet so tiny no shelving here so everything was very messy and disorganized here too so first things first.
I went to Ikea again, I love storage solutions and I knew I wanted to find some kind of shoe storage solution here. I had something on my mind first. I found this little shoe rack and thought. this would be the perfect thing to put in our closet perfect dimensions then i looked at all those shoe cabinets now we used to have one in our front entry i got rid of that one it was a little different style but then i saw this one a little modern but i thought maybe there was a way that I could use it for our entryway and I loved that it was only about six inches deep and it was perfect so on the way home I brought the shoe cabinet.
I grabbed a couple of these because I measured our wall and knew that two of these IKEA cabinets would fit on the wall and I wanted as much shoe storage as possible. I've also used them not only for shoe storage but also for accessory storage so we wear a lot of hats and gloves here in Canada in the winter so they're great for that too, they're pretty easy to put together like all IKEA furniture, you just need a couple of tools, lots of patience, turn up the music and enjoy the build, so then i grabbed my stud finder.
I found a couple of studs on our hallway wall and I need a common to covet. You can do wherever you want and attach them to the beams. Next I took all the drawer fronts and sanded them down with this little palm sander and then I used a little bit of primer this primer I'm using is by Cloverdale and it's a good tacky primer nice and tacky so I primed both cabinets around the frames and to put the primer on I just used a little foam brush I like the finish I get with these foam rollers, I did the same thing with the drawer fronts so I just plumbed them and then brushed them with a primer with a foam roller and if you're doing this make sure you let everything dry as long as possible between coats so that after the primer was on.
I took my favorite white, which is currently pure white, and painted the cabinets too, then put the backs on, so you might be wondering why you're painting the cabinets white. It's because I wanted them to match the trim in my hallway exactly, they were a little out of place to begin with, so I wanted them to be the exact same white color as my hallway. I don't know where I put the pictures for this but I painted about 2/3 of my wall whisper white bear in a satin finish and then I go ahead and add a skirting on the wall to make my DIY pegboard and batten so here it is where the project started to get a little frustrating so i nailed this piece down but realized it's a little too low it's covering the little screws in the light fixtures i had to remove everything i cut the nails then loosen those fixtures and I moved a little bit towards the trim and then I was able to pull the light the little light switches not the fixtures the light switches up and over the trim because I'm going to try to get these switches all the way out and forward to be able to clip around them now just be careful if you are working with the light switch is that you be very careful with the live wires make sure everything is off so you don't the get electrocuted, so I won't go into all the details of my DIY board and lath.
Basically I use trim my nail gun. a full tutorial for this on my youtube channel and blog, and i'll link them in the description box below, then i went ahead and removed all my beautiful girls artwork from this wall. I'm going to come up with some other kind of art system so stay tuned for that, I just made sure to save everything for the new art wall. I also removed this mirror because we are going to put a mirror on the other wall soon, I can't wait to show it to you and then one thing turned into the next and I decided this wall needed boards and batten too, then I got some wood putty and i filled that little crack between the two shoe cabinets because i wanted them to look like a single shoe cabinet.
I used wood putty in all the cracks in my board and batten as well to make everything look nice and finished now this is time consuming but it sure looks a lot better in the end, I then sanded all the wood filler to make sure it all the joints were nice and smooth i had to sand this edge on the left side feet a bit to make it match and then this is how i went ahead and trimmed around the switch box so it would stick out of that wall and match the edge once everything was filled with wood and sounded.
I took a caulking gun and hammered everything in where the trim meets the wall, so wood filler and caulk are like my best friends when it comes to DIY because even if you get the measurements a little off, you can fill in all those cracks and seams, smooth everything out and then once you paint over that it looks so nice and this is how i made my shoe cabinets look built in. I just got the trim down to the top of the shooting cabinets. It will all be one color and I think it will look great when it's all over. done once i did all the filling, sanding and caulking i took my foam roller one more time and that whisper of white bear color and painted the whole thing over.
I found that after a coat of paint on any trim job you can see if there are any kind of holes or things I missed and you can fix things as needed, then I bought a small liter of Valspar seashell grey, so I accidentally painted too much on the wall, that was another thing that went well and I had to buy a little bead of this paint to cover that accidental white which I then painted like all the rest of my board and batten. I am finishing the wall with a small piece of molding on top.
I think it's an inch and a half by eleven sixteen and I love the look of it then all the lights that cover it came back on and this I think looks so nice when they're floating above the trim so once the The wall was basically finished, I went through our closet and took out everything that was there that could be donated that we were no longer using my husband and my children helped me and we purged a little the same with their shoes I went through all those we purged some of those I donated some of those and solved at the bottom of the closet and cleaned it out when the shoe rack IKEA k they fit great always make sure you bring your tape measure when you shop for things to store to make sure they fit nicely in your space and then i went in and put the tallest stuff like the slide like boots and rain boots on there so i went to walmart and found these fantastic baskets they were the perfect size for our closet and i loved how they had that natural look with a rope on the top, two of them fit on top of our closet.
I just bought some. shelves from home depot and i installed it on top of our closet and put some seasonal stuff in those baskets as far as the IKEA shoe cabinets on the east wall i put the rest of our shoes in here to find i can fit two pairs of adult shoes here, usually as you can see, maybe not the biggest ones my husband has, but two adult shoes and then two or three or sometimes even four pairs of children's shoes in each of these. It was time for this rug. to go bye we've had it for seven years and when i moved on i vacuumed the hallway here and mopped it and left it clean and tidy ok this mirror has to be my favorite piece in here.
I found it on Wayfarer it's so big it's like 36 inches wide and I love this scale for On top of the cabinets for photography I love a mirror that's about half the width of the console underneath. Then, on top of the cabinets, I put a basket to store things like keys and phones, some fake greenery, some books, and a candle. I also found this. wayfarer runner I'll be sure to leave a link to it and everything else in this video that you can buy online in that description box below I love the turquoise and gray color combo of course and I also loved the length it i decided to put up a couple of prints here these ones i found of the little Crown Prince butterflies just to add a bit of interest to this wall but not make it too overwhelming so here's a reminder of what our front hallway looked like before tackle it and this is how ok now i am very excited about the result of this
I think it is a very good combination of practicality and beauty. It gives us more shoe storage because we have the shoe rack, but the shoe rack is nice and narrow, so we're still able to walk down this aisle with ease and not feel like it's too messy even though I had a few issues with all the work of fit and some of the measurements and stuff. I was really happy with how this built in look turned out here's a look at what our closet looked like before and now this is what our closet looks like now again storage and organization are everything so I'm really happy that we finally put some shelves in here I really like the baskets for that seasonal storage and definitely the shoes with the shelves layers at the bottom work much better so in the baskets I have things like sandals and seasonal things that we don't wear right now in our canadian winter as well as other accessories this is a giant mirror offering the perfect place to check my hair and makeup before i leave it is also a great place to use as a little mixed bag for phones and keys and of course , I love all this extra shoe storage for our family, thank you very much for watching this video I hope you enjoyed it, let me know in the comments below what you think about my post's makeover.
