Absolute TOP 20 Best DIY IKEA HACKS That'll Blow Your Mind!

May 11, 2024
In today's episode we are going to do 20 Ikea tricks. This is a compilation style episode, so sit back, relax, and maybe even DIY with me, but let's start with the first one. We are going to do a bedroom makeover and this is the first piece. what we're working on for that bedroom makeover so it's a hemmed dresser so on these hemmed dressers I've always felt like the top piece sticks out too much at each end and it just looks out of place so I decided What I did was trim about an inch on each side to make it look a little more proportional, so to speak, so I took some painter's tape, taped it down, and used it as a guide to cut off the excess on the edges now if If I had a circular saw, it would probably work a little easier, keep it a little straighter.

I used a jigsaw because it was quick and easy. I grabbed it, didn't think much about it, so I had to go back and write. to send some irregularities, but in the end it turned out that it looks good, it's okay, unfortunately, when I cut it, part of the wood splintered, which in theory should not have happened because I had taped it together, I don't know if my saw just wasn't there, my blade wasn't sharp enough or what, but it doesn't matter, I just cleaned it up a little and sanded it and then added some wood putty to it and we let it dry while we moved to the front of the dresser, like this The first thing I did was remove the hardware and then it occurred to me to make a kind of wood molding effect on the dresser because I'm going to occupy this bedroom. a little more modern than maybe the rest of my house, what we're going to do is take these, I think they're a 38 inch square peg, and we're going to do an asymmetrical design on our drawer fronts.

We don't need a saw for this, we're just going to use these miter scissors which are going to be very useful and then we're going to use some tiny nails about 5/8 of an inch thick, which are going to be thick enough to We go through our wood valley and then we go into the dresser. What I was thinking is an angle from here to here and then we'll do some verticals at the bottom, so we'll just cut the tip off of this. very slightly and then what we can do is take a pencil and make our marks, so that will be the first one and then what we will do is skip, obviously. where it is and just continue down here, so that's what we're trying to do here and we'll continue.

I spaced it evenly using just a piece of scrap wood just to make sure each space was even and not uneven. I started from the top left corner and moved to the right until we got our angles right, so in my initial plan I thought I'd put this here so it would be more continuous, but looking at it in a hole. I think that seems too busy or like I'm trying to fix a mistake and that seems a little more intentional, so I think we're going to delete it and just have a line through it and then I wanted to run something vertical. the pieces were joined together on our angled pieces and then I made sure to fill all of the nail holes and after everything was dry I sanded the top well, sanded the dresser, sanded all of our putty marks and it was ready to paint now, if you ever see me use black paint on furniture, walls and drawers, anything other than chalk paint that i had to mix, chances are the color is sherwin williams caviar and i love it i think which is a beautiful color. black and that's what I ended up using on this dresser, the only place you need to be very careful is probably in the dll files because it was so close to the actual color of the original dresser that I don't think you're going to use I need a lot of layers if that makes sense and then let it dry, it looked good.

I was very excited and actually had a different idea for the drawer handle. I was going to make like one long bar lengthwise, but I thought we already had too many. Continuing with the angles of the dresser, so what I decided to do was order some Edge post handles to go on the top of the dresser and we put them on and they were in the brass color, it was the perfect finishing touch and it just turned out. Beautiful, I love the way this turned out. I'm super, super excited, my son checked it out. He loves it.
He's super excited about the direction I'm taking the room. I just love him. I think everything that was worth $10. made of wood takes a little effort and a little paint and we have totally transformed the look of this Hemy dresser into something very personalized and I love that simple changes equal great results, okay , my next two tricks are hoaxes. I love doing tricks. and I love making them with Ikea stuff because I feel like Ikea is already trying to emulate Pottery Barn on many levels, so I found the Vick Hammer nightstand on the website and knew it was going to be a good option for this one.
The one I found at Pottery Barn was over $600 and the one at Ikea was $89, so all I did was take it home and proceeded to follow the instructions on how to build it, it was a lot quicker than I thought. super easy and I made two of them and the second one was even easier together. I mean, I think I made both in less than an hour, so you can do this, just follow the instructions, they are self-explanatory, very, very good. once they were built, I didn't need to spray paint anything, it was already black, so my idea for this is that you could do that peel off bar as contact paper, but I thought it would look a little more realistic and be a little more realistic. more durable if you did and it would also add a cool texture if you peel and stick the floor and it was really affordable so what we're going to do is just cut it to fit like the door front of the drawer and then we'll put some on top and some on the sides and maybe a little bit down here, since we don't have that bottom shelf here.
I thought maybe we could mimic that right here, so let's start gluing this vinyl floor, I think. It's going to work very well. I am very excited. Let's do this. What I noticed is that the vinyl box I bought from Home Depot was pretty dusty from being in their store, so I think some of that dust made its way through. the vinyl because some of the vinyl didn't want to stick too well to the sides where it was vertical, so what I ended up doing for some of the pieces was kind of Hit and Miss, I think it went like that, depending on how dusty it was, I didn't I know, I used a little bit of spray glue, you could do that and that's it, it just needs a little bit more adhesive and then stick it on and then it was fine, so I needed to add a handle and they have handles at Ikea, but I knew I'd seen one in Hobby Lobby which was very pretty and looked a lot like the inspiration.
They were originally $1.99 each, but I got mine for 50% off, so they were like $6 each. piece and used it and just took some painter's tape taped where the holes were marked and then made sure it was centered on the drawer and then drilled holes for the handle and the handle was ready to go like it was super easy No I had to paint anything and then just put those handles on, it looked so good. I love how it turned out. This also goes to Sun's room. It was very easy to do. In total, I think I have about $15 in addition to the $89 I spent on the nightstand, so $105 for each nightstand versus over $600 for the inspiration, so cute.
I love how they turned out, it was super simple to make, you can totally do this. I hope you enjoyed it below. I have another dup. I found this black pillow with a leather strap in the center and I think it was between $54 and $56 for this pillow. Well these black pillowcases that I buy at Ikea are $3.99 and then I had some of this faux leather that was a similar style that I just cut like a half inch strip from 1/4 inch to 3/4, I just try to keep it nice and consistent and I also think there's a leather tape in there.
That would make this super easy and I usually like to sew things, in this case I just decided to glue it on. The basic construction of the pillow was very good, this is just a small embellishment so I just glued it on. this in the center of our pillow, I put it on a pillow I already had and boom so easy it was super easy to hack right you get a similar look oh yeah I don't know we'll call it $4.50 vs $56 or wherever. that arrived and it's a huge savings, really nice, this will also go on my son's bed, moving on to the next trick.
I started with one of the Ikea clocks and then all I had to do was get a little loop handle and I really thought hard about leaving it gold, um, but in the end I took out the little screw that comes on the CU, you can turn it easily and I took it outside and spray painted it black at the same time we were doing the leg for another project and let it dry completely and then what we're going to do is just mix up some epoxy and stick it right on top of our clock on the back, let it dry completely and then if necessary go back in and do some touch up paint, you can, then we just set it up on a bit like a tripod for a photo frame which I also bought at Ikea.
I think it was on sale for 250 or something like that. Okay, that's how it was. It's for that super easy DIY, am I right? You literally spray painted a little bit. You glued it on top. You put it on a tripod. I love it and I think we spent $9.99 on the watch so I'll call it $10. $2 on the little knob at the top, so we're at 450 and right now you can find what they call pocket watches. For this size, it would be considered one of their larger sizes and is on sale right now for $80. I think the original price is 100 dollars.
We made ours for $450, great savings. Very similar appearance. Yes, ours is simply placed on a small tripod instead of being permanently attached. It looks very similar and I think you get the same utility and performance. Buck and I love it and I hope you do too, so I found this cup piece at Ikea. The stem was a little longer than our inspiration and that's probably my biggest problem with it, other than it was the perfect cup. So all we're going to do with this is I decided to prime the glass because it's glass and I wanted it to be a little more durable and then we let it dry completely and then I came back with my favorite gold spray paint. called 18 karat gold by kryon and I did a couple layers of that and on both of them you flip them in both directions, they come from different angles and you cover it very, very well, so we could leave it like that. but on our inspiration piece there was a brushed effect and our gold spray paint doesn't have that so I got out some gold craft paint and got out a chip brush and decided to dry brush on another type of gold. that rotary brushing pattern, so we dried it very carefully, brushed it and let it dry completely, then I also went back with a little bit of rubbing and polishing and then layered it until I got the effect that I liked and really it does. it has a brushed effect, so I grabbed one of the tall glass cylinder vases from our three-piece set that I'm going to use, I think this time two from that set and then I'll also use a vase from a In a couple of episodes back, everything what I'm going to do is place that inside my glasses and then I had a long candle that was a little thinner than normal that I picked up at Hobby Lobby in Utah of all places and brought the excess with me. from that trip and put it up and it looks very similar now you'll see in some of the other DIY's that I use some epoxy you could definitely epoxy this vase instead and it would be a little more stable in my opinion but I wanted to have the option to lift the vase if you needed it for something, so we're just popping it into place and got a very similar look for a fraction of the price.
The inspiration version was around $60. For one of these, our version was about $13 without the candle and with the candle it was about $15, so a big savings over the original. I really love our version. I think it looks beautiful high-end and I hope you enjoyed it below as well. Up top we're going to tackle an nby blanket and I ranged into a couple of different projects. They have a really cute pumpkin pillow at Pottery Barn that looks a lot like fall. But in the end I decided to make the type of bouay pillow they had. and it sells with a feather insert for $59 and we're going to recreate it for less.
The first thing I did was fold our blanket to fold it just because I felt like otherwise it would be too thin for the front and So I took the pillowcase from the pillow that we're going to get back and it's just one that I had and I wanted to put a new pillowcase on it and I used that like our Dimensions, so what are you going to do? If you don't have that, just take

your

pillow dimensions and add about an inch and a half, but I had a pillowcase I could use as a pattern and that's what I did: I cut it out, folded it, and then kind of pinched the edges. just to make sure they stayed in theirplace while we cut our next piece and then I had some drop cloth left over and at this point I basically consider it free but I'll put a dollar amount on it but Yes, having drop cloths is very helpful now, I personally think they used some sort of canvas on

your

s to save money.
I also think it gives the pillow a little more structure and stability by adding that canvas, i.e. having a little thicker substance. sewing it is good, so I started pinching everything in place, but leaving an opening on one side for our insert to go in, so everyone, if you haven't sewn it, is like this. easy to sew, we sew around the three sides and then a little bit about an inch or two on the bottom side and that gives us so we can have nice corners and then once we sewed it into place, I turned it around. on those same three sides and zigzagged the edges that way, you know the blanket wanted to fray a little and this prevents the edges from fraying, so you zigzag the edges all around and then cut off any loose threads or fibers or something like that and put it in nice and clean it, then we turn it over and then we put our feather insert in it.
Now I either inherited this pillow from when we bought this house or I've had it for so long that I don't even know, but you can find feather inserts even at thrift stores. Make sure they are clean and everything looks good before you buy them, but I have bought feather inserts before at thrift stores, but I am very picky about what you could put a zipper on. on it and this time all I did was put it back on itself, put a bunch of those little sewing clamps in place and just did a straight down stitch, closing it permanently and that's fine by me, it just makes it a little simpler and less expensive and works great usually when I'm ready to replace it, it's not like I really want to wash it and if you need to wash it in the meantime you can clean them with a little steam. or something like that, I usually use a very small section of the blanket.
I could probably make several more pillows out of the blanket and that was $8.99 and then about 0.50 for the canvas fabric because it was basically scrap scrap I had and then for the pillow just use a pillow that you have around hand, so for me, I'm in this for about $9.50. Our original, I remember, was about $60, so that's a really good savings, it's a very, very similar look, honestly no one is going to notice the difference. did you get yours from Pottery Barn or you made it and you can see it here with some actual pillowcases from Pottery Barn, so these pillows that I have them paired with here are from Pottery Barn, but I think it looks really cute.
I really love how it looks. It worked out and I saved a lot of money so I start sewing, you never know what you can do with it. The next step is a flower arrangement. Now Pottery Barn flower arrangements are some of the easiest things you can make, they are so easy to make. Dupe and they are very expensive, very expensive. I started with one of their cylinder vases that I bought a year and a half ago. It was like a very shallow round cylindrical vase and I haven't really done anything with it. I just had it.
I kept it in my stash so I knew it was perfect for this project, then I bought some peonies. I got an arrangement of that at Ikea while we were there, so I had that to work with, but I also had some peonies that I bought at Dollar. General Dollar Tree and very affordably we are going to make this arrangement. I tried making a tape grid with some washi tape, it doesn't work well so stick with something funky like masking tape, the clear stuff that will help you make. a grid and then you just fill it with your peonies and keep it a little bit low.
One thing I would recommend when making your arrangements if you use a lot of different varieties, especially with these pey arrangements, it really gives it more quality. realistic feel, so I have some that are less expensive, I have some that are a little more expensive and Al together they create a very, very nice look, then I also save a lot of scraps and scraps for other projects like Greenery. Sometimes you just use the flower head but don't use the greenery so I keep that and use it as filler in these arrangements so you've already accounted for it in other places and these are just scraps so for me I had about $8. to $10 worth of flowers, believe it or not, because a lot of the bouquets were from Dollar Tree, our Ikea Bunch was like $6 and I had a couple bouquets from Dollar Tree and a bouquet from Dollar General and that was $3 and then our vase.
It was about $8 or $9 so overall I like this $20 fix. Now you'll notice I didn't do an epoxy resin base and have done that on some of my knockoffs and duplicates in the past which will add $10 additional about $1 to $15 to make the epoxy resin, makes it permanent, looks beautiful and is actually what they use in their arrangements Pottery Barn is some type of epoxy resin so even if you made the epoxy resin I wouldn't But this time I did it in the past, even then it would cost $30 versus $330 for the original, so it's a huge savings, whether you use it or not, you could fill it with a little water to make it visible. either you can just leave it or you can make the resin either way, you'll save a ton of money if you do it yourself and just put it all in there, arrange it however you want and keep playing with it. until you got it and it turned out beautiful and it's something you made yourself and you saved hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of dollars so you make, make, make on it, right?
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed, our next package is another one. hurricane base cylinder type, but a little different, so I set out to look for a small black saucer in their potting area and I found one and it came in a set with another small terracotta pot, well it was black, I just needed the saucer little. part, but I had to buy it in the set, so we're going to stick with that, but I'm going to use the bigger bottle on another one in just a second. All we did for this is you can grab a free paint stick that you get when you pick up your paint at the store.
I always end up having extra because sometimes I use the paint right away and I don't necessarily need the paint stick that they provided so this part could be free and that's all I did. I cut them down to about 2 inches or so and then pressed in some thumbtacks that I had in my stash, they were a little long so I took some small wire scissors and cut the tips off of them and then took them and put them outside to spray black paint so that matched our original black that we had from the small saucers.
Then all I did once they were spray painted and completely dry was mix up some epoxy and attached them to them, now you'll notice. That I put it in the wrong direction at first I quickly corrected and then let it dry completely. You want to make sure they are going in the right direction at that point, once it is completely dry if you need to do any touch ups. paint, you can do that easily and then what I did was I took another one of what I think was the medium size one from our three pack that we got and I just put it on our little stand and then I put a super super simple candle on it, right, I'm right, anyone can do this and if you didn't want to use epoxy you could hot glue it on, it won't be as strong so if you want to use the hot glue method I would mix that up too. some E6000 so you have something that lasts a little better, but I feel like this is a very close match and I'm going to rate our small saucer.
I think it was about $6 for the pot and saucer, so I'm going to give it a value of about $2 and then we'll use that pot somewhere else and put the value in there and then our little free paint stick that we used and such Maybe, oh God, I don't know. 50 cents we'll say for the push pins although I think that's a little generous and then around 650 for our glass hurricanes so our inspiration piece was originally $99.99 so $100 it's on clearance for $ 49, ours still came out to $850. massive savings, it's less than 10% of the original cost and still a huge savings over clearance price, looks great.
I love it and I'm super happy with it and I hope you enjoyed that trick. The next step is the varied type of Vine. they have one at Pottery Barn that's $50 and I bought my little plant from Ikea for about $5 and remember we used the saucer on another project and I'm only going to use this pot for $4 so it was like $9 it was a little bit . smaller, all I had to do was tip over a small paper cup, place an arson, fluff the leaves and that's it, we have saved a lot of money and we have an almost identical look and no one will notice the difference and my friends , it's the

best

kind of DIY, it's basically effortless and you get the same results as a high-end designer.
I love it. Our next trick is a DIY flower pot, so all we are going to do is find this flower pot in the garden section. At Ikea I knew I wanted to do something with it. I knew I wanted to add some gold to it somewhere. I didn't know where or how, but looking at the pot I decided it was

best

to just tape the top edge of the pot. There was a natural stopping point so I just took some painter's tape and taped it to the top and then came back with a plastic bag from one of our shopping trips and taped it around our bottom . to protect it because we didn't want to get paint on it and then I used my favorite 18 karat gold spray paint that I just bought at the store and I sprayed the edge of the little top shelf and then I decided to add a little bit of glitter on the inside and spray the inside as well so it reflects some light let it dry completely then we remove the bag remove the tape and its

absolute

ly amazing how this simple switch really elevated the look of this pot and then i took two of their ferns which bought at Ikea one wasn't enough so I actually put two pots in there and it's so beautiful honestly it was a surprise favorite for me and then with the addition of the gold spray painted it looks so elevated and then I bought this little stand wooden one at Hobby Lobby that I placed on top just to elevate it a little and here it is in my Airbnb rental, it looks fantastic, that's all. simple, very easy, Ikea Hack, looks amazing.
I loved it and I hope you like it too. I have another extremely simple Ikea Hack for you, so I found these candle holders and then I also found these little ones. I think they are a small Lotus tea light. stand and I thought the two together would look amazing so I grabbed a little epoxy kit and didn't know how to stir it. These would look like disposable forks. Perfect, it's a wooden fork, but this end is perfect for that wooden fork. which was meant to eat worked perfectly to stir my epoxy, wipe it on the edge of the candle holder and then just center the lotus right on top, it installs in 5 minutes you just want to watch it because if you put a lot of epoxy on it sometimes it tends to slide off , so make sure you spend the 5 minutes watching it dry so it stays nice and in the center, it has a little bit of wiggle room in the first few minutes, but after 5 minutes it sets up a lot. completely cured, I think in 20 24 hours, that's it for this one, then I grabbed some of these really cool pillar candles because I wanted something a little taller, you could use it as a tealight, but these don't quite fit. the cup was actually placed on top and I was actually okay with that.
I think if you had a table that got knocked over easily then you might want to reconsider and use it as a tealight or something to sit on, but I loved it. the look of this and these candles were like a Ste. I think there were five candles in there for $12, different heights. I mean, we're talking Dollar Tree prices for five candles of that kind of substance. It was incredible. I think it really looks. Okay, so next we found a desk in the AIS section and my daughter really wanted it. She said she really needed a new desk, but it wasn't the right color, but the price was right.
The first thing I did was take it outside and I turned it over, I spray painted the bottom in gold and then I turned it right side up and I put the tops of all the legs in that same gold and let it dry and then once I It was completely dry the next morning, I had originally bought it. a paint and discovered that it needed a special thinner. I didn't have it, so I ran to the store, scraped the top with a small sanding sponge and then proceeded to apply two coats of black caviar finish paint and I'm going to tell you right now that this was too rushed, it's not normally how I do it, but I had little time.
I normally wouldn't use this roller touch up paint kit. What I would recommend is either spring if you can. if not I would use a foam roller, this just didn't work and mainly because it was a bit rushed and maybe the temperature was a bit cold too, what I would recommend is waiting a couple of hours. between each layer and using a goodprimer was also short on time and then you'll want to let it dry completely for about a week before putting anything on this desk, but overall I really love the look of the desk I hope.
She too. I hope she really likes it, so even though the paint finish isn't exactly how it should be, I think if you follow the right steps, don't rush it, it will look wonderful overall and I think she will get it. she will give it another third coat and sand it a bit, but I love this and it was such a dramatic before and after on this desk. I think it's Alexa's desktop. I love it so much I think I need a version I like. the overall look of this and the idea and with perfect execution it will look very, very good.
Then I found this simple little side table that was $25, it was a fantastic price but it was pretty basic and I thought it was very hackable. article but I just wanted to give a quick update to my daughter she really loves black and gold so you are seeing a theme here so it started out in black and then what I did was I just put it together and then I started recording . I took it off and left 5 inches of the bottom leg exposed and then took a couple trash bags and tapped that around. It was kind of ugly looking, but the idea was that it would just cover and protect the rest.
Because we wanted to leave the rest black, so I took it outside and sprayed it with the same gold spray paint that we had been using and gave it a couple of layers. I flipped it on One Direction, then I flipped it on the other one and we did it. I'm sure everything had really good coverage and then while we were spray painting I also wanted to spray paint the bottom of the tray that goes on this stand and I spray painted the bottom of that and then once It dried, I turned it over. and I spray painted it focusing on the outer ring because it would be exposed, but I had an idea for the inside so I didn't worry too much about getting full coverage in the middle and wasting spray paint, I let it dry completely and then, once it was completely dry I brought it in and bought some marble look contact paper from the Dollar Tree and I just traced the circle and took some utility scissors that I found in his junk drawer, here I cut that circle out and then I removed the backing and put it on the inside of the tray and just peeled off a little corner and peeled it off as I went.
I just used a membership card to smooth that out as we went along, but inevitably you probably will. Whenever you use a peel and stick type product, you're going to get some air bubbles and that's normal, so you just take like a pin or something, make a little hole and you can scrape that air bubble out and it really works. dispel it now with any peel and stick product, it will be almost impossible to get them all. I only focus on the biggest bubbles, over time those air bubbles disappear so don't worry if you have them, just concentrate.
On the larger ones, another way to apply them is to spray them with water mist, but we didn't have enough time to properly cure the paint before doing that, so I knew that would probably ruin some of the paint finish and I didn't want to do that, so that overnight, even though all those air bubbles dissipated, now my daughter has this really cute side table that she can use wherever she wants so she can put the candle holders we made earlier. She could put a flower pot in it. She could put a lamp on it, there are many different possibilities with that.
Now, when we were on our shopping trip, I saw that cool base and they had a similar idea. I didn't love the flower arrangement that they had and we're going to take that idea and expand on it and make our own flower arrangement as well, but the first thing I wanted to do was do an ombre effect on this vase because it had that metallic silver mirror. I ended up on top, but we definitely had a gold and black vibe. She also loves white and has some whites in her room, so what I thought we could do is just do an ombre effect in the small top section of the room. sprayed some gold spray paint but I didn't want the excess spray to get on the clear glass so what I did was I took a shopping bag and I just taped it up randomly just to protect that glass part and then I took it I put it outside and I just sprayed it on top for no rhyme or reason, it gives a beautiful ombre effect so some of the overspray is sprayed onto the silver but that's okay because that's the look we're going for when final. it was so cute, then the next part of this was they had some twinkling lights like fairy lights and I just bought a pack of their lights there at Ikea and they run on batteries and then I put the lights in there but I left them. the place where you turn the battery on and off for now just because I wanted to be able to easily turn it on and off without having to touch the flower arrangement and all that, then I went to Michaels and got a couple of floral bouquets, got some hydrangeas and then found a mixed floral bouquet that had some Magnolia in it, so I proceeded to put them together and then intertwine them to make it look more like a very simple and easy to make arrangement.
Those pre-made bushes make it easier for you because they have already thought about what it would look like as a flower arrangement. The only thing I tried to do is make a sort of triangular shape with our Magnolias because those were the stars of the show, okay, so you just modify the flowers until you like the arrangement and as you can see, I made one, two, three with the main flowers of the show and it looks very good and then I stuck the little batteries in the flower arrangement where you couldn't see it, where you can easily turn it on and off and there you have it, a very, very easy, very simple Ikea hacked base, which really looks pretty and elegant.
I really like this flower. arrangement, but sometimes you can have a big impact with very few tools, very little effort and just small adjustments can make a big difference in our next project. We're going to remove the Cameron Globe lamp, this cost about 15 $50 and I. I thought we could do it for less and then I found the frot lamp at Ikea and the price difference was tremendous to begin with. I think it was around $26 and flipping this is going to be super easy so have the rub. It was originally a brast, so if you can find it, that will shave a step off and make your life a lot easier.
I couldn't find it so I ended up having to start by spring painting the section we needed gold and that was pretty easy. to do and I already had the paint on hand, I hardly used any paint and just sprayed that section, but if you can find the brass one to start with, you can forego that step all together and just go to the next step, which is where we glue the tape . Outside of what we don't want to paint, we want to leave gold and just protect everything as best we can and then we paint the next section with matte black spray paint and if I can, I really like the Kryon Fusion line of paint.
I usually buy it because it tends to work much better and then once dry I wanted to change the globe part because the one that comes with Ikea is very frosted glass, you won't see anything and The good thing about this lamp was that it was clear and you could see the bulb, so I picked up a globe one from Lowe's that was pretty much this one was clear, but it had a sitting glass, now our inspiration was it wasn't sitting from what I could see online, it was just a clear glass, but in Actually sitting will work a little better in my case because I will also be replacing a light fixture in the entryway very soon. and the one I'm going to put in there will also have glass sitting in it, so it'll actually tie them together really well, so I wanted to go ahead and install it, so I uninstalled the old light fixture, but when I removed it, this is what I saw.
I don't know what they did here, but there's an obvious change in texture, so the only solution I can really see is to get like a little medallion to form over there. from Disguise that, in addition to having to do a bunch of drywall repairs, something I don't feel like doing, I headed to Lowe's to get a little medallion for the ceiling. Now I'll probably have to replicate this look in the entryway since you're there, but this really masked that ugly ring and I didn't have to do any drywall repairs and it looked fine, so this was a little trick and fix to that problem, so I finished installing our lamp that I put. in a similar bulb, that type of chandelier, I always really like daylight just because it's a cool, bright, clean light and not like a yellowish light, especially in that hallway where the daylight will be. fantastic and then I just popped our new globe light into place it's very lightweight and snaps into place when you look at how we did the trick it was extremely easy spray paint and a new globe and we're done for the day and you have an almost identical combination I mean, there are some subtle changes, but if you didn't know any better, you'd think this Ikea lamp was

absolute

ly from Pottery Barn and guess what the Pottery Barn 150 version was without shipping tax or anything.
Our version was $35, which is a huge savings, but I think it's very easy to get a nearly identical look. I really like how it turned out for our next Ikea Hack that we are going to remove from the Malcolm CA table. Pottery Barn was 4$100 and I found something that looked very similar now, the direction it went was a little different but since the overall look was almost identical we will be using the Bitz Joe small side table, the first thing we did was putting it together. It was honestly one of the easiest assembly jobs I've ever had to do at Ikea.
It went together very easily and was pretty simple at least in that part and it came with the piece of glass, but come on. To keep that for something in the future, we don't need it for this so we needed to be a little powerful because we were going to build the table, it was too wide to go out and get something like that. a 2x12 or something and to mimic the top we needed to attach something anyway so I chose a 2x4 a 2x4 we'll do the job which is pretty inexpensive so let's narrow this down to we fit our piece let's get started to cut, we measured two outside pieces and I think they were about 22 inches, you'll want to make sure you take your own measurements, but I think that's where they were and then we cut two at about 15. for the center and then two more that were about 7 inches for the end pieces that are in the middle, so we had all these little individual pieces and we needed to assemble them into one solid piece, just like we are.
I'm going to put all of these pieces together by making some pocket holes with a Craig jig. There are tutorials on how to use a pocket hole jig. I'm still a little new to this, but let's give it a try and I think it will work. It's going to be a great way to put all of these pieces together, we just glue them here, we've got this clamp in place and we're going to start placing our pocket holes like this and then I think I'm going to make some that go this way so you can see. what we are doing, although all the pieces were joined together.
I wanted to add a couple extra pieces here and there to increase that overall stability. of the piece and tightened it as much as we could, so I put in a couple extra pocket holes. There are other ways but this was a very good option and much quicker and will create some strength with all our pocket holes ready to go I started putting everything together and took some wood glue to add more stability once again and then you take these screws and a pocket hole as a screw cap, they're like special pocket hole screws and a drill bit that helps you drive them into the wood, it sends the screws at an angle and it really creates a lot of force, so I just went screw by screw and assembled our table, then it was done and I thought, oh awesome, but the thing with 2x4s and this was kind of a bummer, there's a little curved edge on these, if you can find as many square 2x4s as you can, that is a really good way to do it because these ended up being quite rounded and I wanted to fill them out. in spaces somewhat similar to our Pottery Barn, the first thing I did was start sanding it to see.
I used a very aggressive sandpaper with a low grit, like a 60 grit, and I was just trying to sand it as smooth as I could. A band saw would be really good, but you know, even with all the tools that I have, I don't have everything and I was doing my best with the palm sander to try to knock down the rounded edge. and I tried to get it a little more flush it just wasn't working so what I ended up doing was creating a DIY wood filler that I pushed into the cracks and let dry and then I ended up having to make a second one because as it got dry, it sinks, so I ended up doing two coats of wood filler.
You don't have to DIY one, it's really economical and cheap because you can just use sawdust and a little glue and call it a day. but you can buy some wood filler and fill those cracks very, very well and thenyou go in and sand it all really good with a coarse grit and then eventually move on to a higher grit sandpaper. I ended up with a 220. it still had a rustic feel which is good because the inspiration has a rustic feel too and when I was sanding I rounded the corners and got everything smooth and looking good and then once I was happy with the edge work and it looked great and ready to go, I ended up using an antique glaze and the reason I do this is because I found that it very closely mimics the color of the Pottery Barn pieces that I used it on as a Pottery Ladder Barn is a great match because it's just the Waverly antique wax, but the folkart ones, which are from the same company, are very similar, so any of those antique waxes would be good.
I like it because it's very good for color, but it also dries very quickly and then we could seal it, so I used Watco clear coat with a satin finish and just sprayed it on. What I like is that it is not yellow and dries to the touch. in about 30 minutes we had this base that we built from the Ikea piece and we built this top and now we have to put them together. This is where I had a little bit of heartburn because I didn't know if it was what I wanted. It would work but I was going to try it so in the middle that held the glass it had these little metal tabs and I thought it would be a perfect way to hold the top on but there were no holes because it was supposed to hold a piece of glass , so my idea was to drill some holes in this metal, but it was actually quite thick metal and I wasn't sure I was going to do that, but I'm like you.
You know what we're going to try so I turned it over and put a piece of wood underneath so it would have some pressure on the bottom but also something to drill through so I wouldn't damage anything. What you have to do here is just very carefully place your drill bit in the center of your piece of metal and then you start slowly, just making a little hole when you start to see a little bit of those metal shavings, give it a little bit. a little bit more juice and then at the end you can give it all the juice and give it a little bit of pressure, a little bit of weight behind it and drill those holes so there are six of those tabs, drill six holes and it really worked and I felt very relieved because I don't really want to use Liquid Nails because it's a bit of a silly way to put it together and I want this to be a good quality piece.
I simply flipped our dry top, drove some screws into the bottom and flipped it over and we had a very close imitation of this Potter Barn version. Okay, remember their version was $400 without taxes or fees or anything. Our version was only $40, that's 10.% of the cost I like ours, it's a little rustic, but so is Pottery Barns. I think this doesn't really go with this room, but I just wanted to demonstrate what it looked like and all that. I do not know if. I'm going to keep this piece or what I'm going to do with it, but I just wanted to show you that you can take a piece of furniture and really transition it for my next Pottery Barn SL Ikea knockoff, were these white?
Mantel shelves now have many similar colors, so there is no need to make them white. There are many wood options that match the originals and are much cheaper, and then all we had to do is To install them, you need some drywall anchors with the corresponding screws. It doesn't actually come with them and the instructions only show how to screw them directly into the wall, which won't be sturdy enough unless you have studs on both sides. You just want to make sure you know how to make a drywall anchor and make sure you place them at every joint, so use a level to make sure they are level.
Mark where the pre-drilled holes are for those drywall anchors and just tap, tap, tap them into place and then once they're in place you can just screw those screws through the front of the shelf and then you'll have a very sturdy shelf. This is the only part that was a little tricky to cover those screw holes. your shelves, Ikea provides stickers and I was like, yeah, this is silly, but I went ahead and used them and they really disappear, you don't notice them once you cover the head of the screw with those stickers. My only problem is that if I need to remove the shelves to paint or if I move and put them somewhere else, I will have to look for a new white decal.
I mean, I guess you can find that, I'm sure Pottery Barnes doesn't use a sticker to hide the screws. but when you look at the cost Savings of $40 versus $240 yes I'm fine with a white sticker it completely disappears you don't notice and the shelves look so amazing now you can see this in my decorated bathroom and kind of cute if you see it. I want those pretty Pottery bar Barn type of shelves. I would totally recommend the Ikea ones, they are a good dupe and you literally don't have to do anything other than hang them, so for my next Ikea

hacks

they will both be topiaries, but I'm going to start with this one first.
It was $480, you heard right, $480 no way, I have no words, it's really expensive for a small green topiary plant if you want to do the next trick. I would recommend going to Ikea, they're kind of um, I think they're phasing out their topiary balls in the ff and they were $26 and now it's a pretty big topiary ball if you don't live near an Ikea or they're in your house. I see them regularly at HomeGoods in Ross so keep your eyes peeled you can usually find these balls, they're not really hard to find and you'll want to find them at a place like that because they might actually cost less money than Ikea $26 for a ball round is a little expensive in my opinion, but when you compare it, it doesn't even compare now.
Putting this together was really simple, so the first thing I did was grab a toilet plunger, yes, from a Dollar Tree. plunger um just the stick part, I discarded the plunger part and I took my drill and I drilled two holes in kind of the opposite direction, so I drill the hole like this, drill so that it's like a plus sign on the top. I made those type of slots where you hand it in, you can use a wooden Dow for this, you can go out in your garden and grab a branch that is similar to what they had like a thick branch and just cut it off, use what you have once I had these holes. drilled on the top, I went ahead and used the same old polish and put it on everything but the ends because you're not really going to see them, so I just did it on the vast majority of this stick and wiped it off, which is really cool thing about the Dollar Tree plunger is that it has these little knots and so it really looks like a log or something, it's so easy, so I already had this black pot on hand from a previous project.
I don't remember what it was, but it started out as Terra, a pot that cost me $2 or $3, it was very inexpensive and I painted it with black chalk paint and then took one of the moss sheets that I can get. The do25 tree I bought when it was still a dollar and I cut a round circle, like it doesn't even have to be perfect, it's pretty forgiving and once I had it the right size in the center I trimmed it. like a plus sign, you'll see why I need that plus sign in just a second, but then I took a piece of floral foam from the do25 tree and pushed it into the base of our pot and then put our moss on top. you can glue all of this together if you want, so we took the toilet bowl plunger and ran through a couple pieces of wire and tied each piece to that and then twisted them together and you'll see what we're going to do with that in just a second, but then I found a hole big enough to put our plunger in and then we pushed it until it touched the inside of the top of the ball okay so this is going to seem short but this is going to work for what we are trying to match, then we make sure our ball is centered properly and then we run those wires through and then there are a lot of little plastic pieces on these topiary balls and then you wrap them around one of those plastic pieces and twist them around and then cut off the excess wire and then put the remaining portion inside the topiary. ball and then you have your little paddle, then we take our topiary ball and then we're going to push it into the center of our base, um and then the plus sign is important because you just push it through that and it will give a nice snug fit. around the piece of wood and that's very easy.
You can definitely do this in under 5 minutes. It's a super easy DIY even with our kind of expensive F ball, so big that we're on, maybe like $32 it is and that's just I mean you saved $450 and it took you about 5 minutes to put it together so I don't know about you, but 5 minutes of my time is worth $450 in savings and it looks so good that I personally don't believe it. that there really is some difference between the inspired one and this one, no one will know if it was from Pottery Barn or from an Ikea Hack that you put together and that is amazing and you have the look of a $480 topiary for just over 30 dollars.
So that's a big win, that last topiary was easy, our next topiary might be even easier believe it or not, so I found this one at Pottery Barn for $200 and then I bought this top Perry at Ikea for $26, now I think as it is. without doing anything it's a good dup you could leave it like that and honestly that's what I would do but inspiration had olives so I went ahead and bought a couple of stems at Hobby Lobby and just glued them together and placed them to show what it would look like if you wanted that look for Olive.
Now you can build one from scratch. I've seen a lot of tutorials where you just take a stick and drill holes and glue it in so you can get this Pottery Barn look for even cheaper. We start with this and add some of the olives. It looks pretty good, so 26 to $30 vs. $200. I love those savings. Very easy, the most difficult was perhaps the side table and really that is also a doable project for beginners. I promise it's not as complicated as you think and there's even a way to simplify it by just getting a solid piece of wood and just cutting it out and making it even easier, but honestly, I think we did pretty well combining our Pottery Barn inspirations, all told and done.
I saved over $1,000. We could honestly be proud of ourselves because we did it ourselves and got the same look. for a lot less, I love it, I hope you enjoyed this episode, if so here's another one I think you'll like too and just as a re

mind

er, you're more powerful than you think, see you next time, bye.
