How trustworthy are they, and

what

do we know for sure about Catherine's life before she became queen? The mistress Catherine Howard was the daughter of Lord Edmund. howard and his wife jocasta culpepper, who had previously been married to ralph lee, her paternal aunt was lady elizabeth howard and this made her a first cousin to queen anne of berlin, but we don't know when her parents married so we don't know we can reduce the number. his date of birth using that information as you can see his family tree even in this simplified form was also very complicated due to a series of second marriages and marriages between people who were already related in some way, this resulted in a large adoptive family, as well as their immediate blood relatives.

The earliest record we have of her existence is a mention of her in the will of Ella's maternal grandmother Isabel Lee in mid-1527 in which little Catherine had twenty shillings left. this tells us that she was born sometime before which also lists her sister mary, who in this document and all the others we have that mention the howard siblings are named after catherine, which strongly hints that she was younger, If so, that would push Catherine's date of birth back to late summer 1526 at the latest to give Jucasta time to produce Maria by the middle of the next year.

Catherine and Mary are not mentioned in her adoptive grandfather Sir John's will. read that it was dated June 16, 1523 with the attitude of cudasil the following year and this is part of the reason why you will sometimes see 1524 and even 1525 as an estimated birth year for this future queen, indeed if there had been been v very young in 1523 and 1524, it is possible that she was not mentioned for that reason and it is still possible that she was alive at any time. These two wills are all we have in terms of official records, but there are other written records relating to her date of birth.
The best contemporary account we have of Catherine's age or at least her apparent age comes from the French ambassador to England Charles de Marillac writing on 7 December 1541, de Marillac reported that Francis Darum, who was one of the men Catherine had been accused of having an affair with before her marriage and while living with her step-grandmother Agnes Darger, Duchess of Norfolk, had supported the lady from the time he raped her at the age of 13 until she was 18. this is actually inaccurate in terms of the length of their relationship because catherine was previously involved with her music teacher henry mannix and durham came later around 1538 regardless of how long this relationship lasted, which, like the manic entanglement, could well have been preparation and the abuse ended in late 1539 because catherine went to court to join the household of the incoming queen anne of cleves and darum went to ireland so demarilac says he was 18 at the time and therefore born in 1521 his evidence given further credibility by the fact that she had had the opportunity to see Catherine up close on more than one occasion and perhaps even ask those around her how old the new queen was anyway, it is unlikely that if she was only Aged 14 or 15 at the time of their marriage in July 1540, he mistook her for 18 or 19, as this is a major misconception when dealing with someone so young and Catherine lived in an age before make-up existed. which could have been used to make her look significantly older, she could have been gone for a year two at the most, giving her a birth range of 1519-1523, but I highly doubt it would have been more than that, there have been claims why not it is reliable because use said that anne of cleves looked to be in her 30s when she was actually 24, however demarilac was not stating her age in that case, simply the age he thought she was and therefore to me , his integrity when dealing with a person he had spent time with.
As long as Catherine remains intact, another written source that mentions Catherine's age is the Spanish chronicle written anonymously and later translated by Martin Hume, which says that she was a girl when Enrique married her and was no more than 15 years old. when they met assuming they met in late 1539 as the new house of anne of cleve was assembling in anticipation of her arrival in late december this gives a birth year for catherine of 1524 or later which would match her absence in the will of his adoptive grandfather; However, the chronicle is notorious for its inaccuracies and belim biographer eric ives once called it distorted street gossip strongly tied to picaresque and the story it tells of catherine howard and henry viii is a good example of why features catherine as a tribute to henry's daughter, mary, after the death of his third wife, jane seymour, in 1537, states that the two met in the house where mary and her baby brother, prince edward, lived, and He claims that Catherine had by then been at court for about a year, which is nonsense.
Enrique supposedly fell in love with her immediately and they got married. Thus the chronicle has Catherine as Henry's fourth queen rather than Anne of Cleves and by saying they met in 1537 or 1538 actually pushes the birth of the supposed 15-year-old girl to around 1522 or 1523 , the best we can say is that it supports the general idea that she was very young, but that's about it. Next we have some equally dubious portrait evidence. the supposed year of birth of 1518 seems to come from this portrait for many years it was believed to be catherine and because it says the sitter is 21 years old and if it was catherine it could have been painted in 1540 to as soon as she became queen this provides a year of birth earlier than 15 18 or 15 19 depending on the month your birthday fell on, in fact as I discussed in my video on what Catalina looked like which is linked on the screen and in the description box this is not she and is most likely elizabeth seymour cromwell a sister of g and seymour the portrait therefore does not help to identify catherine's birth year in fact there is no confirmed image of catherine but this painting which now resides at the metropolitan museum of art in new york is one of the strongest contenders to be her on the right hand side claims the model is 17 years old. if it is

katherine

, it would have to have been painted in 1540 or 1541 to explain the exceptionally rich garb this girl is wearing and which Catherine would not have had access to before she became queen, this would give a birth year range between the second half of 1522 and the fall of 1524, since we don't know if it's her, although it doesn't help.
Determining her age is frustrating enough, but we can at least use her court career to provide some additional circumstantial evidence as to her year of birth, the fact that Catherine was not in the royal household during the reign of her cousin Ann Berlin, who was executed in May 1536 suggests that she was too young to be so at the time and this is further indication that a birth year of 1518 or even 1520 is simply too early as she appeared three and a half years later to join to anne of cleves establishment she was part of a group of women gathered to attend the new queen the historian gareth russell whose book i will leave linked in the description box has noted the ages of these other ladies and noted those whose years of Birth None are known to have been born before 1521 and all were born in the early to mid-1520s, suggesting that Catherine would have been of approx.
Pretty much the same age, so there are a lot of estimates and guesses when it comes to Catherine's birth, yes. r but if I put it all together, what is my final conclusion? Well, we know from her grandmother's will that she was born in June 1527 and almost certainly had a younger sister that pushed her birth year back to at least 1526. Demarilac who actually saw her believed she was 18 at the end of 1539 and , therefore, he was born in 1521, but the ambassador might have been away for a year or two, giving us a range of 1519-1523. I think it is unlikely that she was born before the 1520s as she did not appear. at court until 1539 and a birth year of 1521 to 23 puts her in line with the ages of Anne of Cleves' other ladies-in-waiting the fact that she does not appear in her adoptive grandfather's will if June 1523 gives me to think to think but it was not unheard of to leave very young children out of these documents however perhaps he was born right after it was made as to the spanish chronicle claims this source is so suspicious and riddled with mistakes I don't. putting any faith in him and no painting's of her are confirmed portraits which makes them useless for this question overall i think she was most likely born between 1521 and autumn 1523 which makes her between 16 and 19 years old when she married Henry and between 18 and 21 when she died, what do you think?
