Film Study: Why Olu Fashanu will be a GREAT addition to the New York Jets

Apr 26, 2024
Alright, so the Jets go out and trade a spot and still get Alo Fashanu and we're going to get into the movie in a second where I'll explain exactly why I'm a big fan of this pick as Fashanu and the Jets are trying to be competitive. right now, it's a little surprising, you know, I think a lot of people expected them to take Fuaga, that maybe he could have a little more versatility, he could play guard or tackle well, they would just want someone who is probably the best protector of passing to help Aaron Rodgers and it certainly is so you know they made a clear effort to make sure the situation that happened last year didn't happen again you know they added three tackles at this point uh tyan Smith Morgan Moses and

fashanu

. uh, so I'm not sure who he is.

I wouldn't be surprised if Fashanu started on the bench, but with the idea that he could play at some point because you know those guys are older tackles who would be starters, I really don't know. but I think it could be a really good entry and you know I could talk about it but instead let's get into the movie and let me show you why I like this choice so much. Let's start with a play like this so you know. A lot of what we heard with Alo Fashanu is that you know how good a pass blocker he is, but that's you, there's a lot more to it than just whether you're good at pass blocking or not.

More Interesting Facts About,

film study why olu fashanu will be a great addition to the new york jets...

You may find yourself in many different scenarios, for example in this one, which

will

be a pass protection play, but the quarterback

will

execute a play action and there will also be a blitz player for Ohio State, so Fashanu Actually, it is not. blocking the edge rusher on this play blocking a faster player more and that can sometimes create some problems for the offensive lineman, sure it's a little uneven, but at the same time, sometimes the linebackers are faster, sometimes They have faster hands like that. of things, so let's see what Fashanu does right here when this play starts again.

He's so quick with his hands in pass protection that it doesn't really matter. He completely has the hand placement that he wants and at this point, like I said, he's a not going to lose the block from here, as you see, he's someone who is able to keep that block at bay and do a very good job as well. Which, again, you know very well about this kind of thing and I think your past protects you. knowing non-traditional ways or traditional ways like something like this is a good example of what he can do off the edge, you know more of a traditional pass rusher trying to block him and you know Fanu is a really tough guy to get out of the way. so you know what the edge rusher is going to do here, well he's going to try to use some speed, notice how when he starts this play, Theanu is able to outrun him and he lets you know the location of his hand where he wants to go to the side, huh , you.

I know he actually has Fanu with his right arm in the edge rusher's left shoulder pad area, but in a move-type speed move that this edge rusher is trying to perform, that's exactly where you want it because now Fashanu can push it. away from the quarterback, look at how that's what he does and I'm serious, it ends up being a really dominant play on that one, almost a real standout level of pass blocking, which isn't always that easy to do, You know, there's a reason why my podcast co-host Kyle has Vishanu as his number one offensive lineman in this draft class, even ahead of Joe Al because of how good he is and how consistently good he is. in pass protection.
On the other hand, there's a reason I think you know most people have Joe Al ahead of them and I think it's fair to say his run blocking needs to work, it does, his run blocking isn't even close to his, you know, I don't. I even have to show a lot more pass protection because as we understand it, it's

great

, he's consistently good, he does a good job, there's definitely some criticism with run blocking and I think it's coachable, although I don't think it's that way. I can't get better at this, some guys say it's okay, they're not movers, they don't have the physical tools, that's not the case with

fashanu

, it's more things like this where you see the one. -on a block here and this one actually isn't even a run block but it's a similar idea there's a play action but it's really what I want to see more of from him sometimes it's just aggression look how it's just a a little timid here and you know, it seemed like he was starting to try to sell a play stock.
In fact, I think he might even have been an RPO. I'm not exactly sure, but either way, you know, a little shy and that's something. I saw it on

film

, especially when there were actual run blocking plays. I'd love to see him be a little more aggressive on some of these, and I think that can be trained, but again, sometimes things that seem controllable still don't get fixed. So maybe it's bad coaching, I don't know, but something I noticed was that I play like that, maybe it's a better example because, for one, it's a real running play, but you see him go one-on-one. an interior defensive lineman right here and he's going to run to the top of the screen, so he has to get up very quickly and try to block the defensive lineman out of that area, but at first he's just not in position to do that. which is now a good job by the interior defensive lineman, but again I feel like there could have been a little more aggressiveness at the beginning of that play to try to help get the defensive lineman out of the area because at this point foreigner will eventually be taken down and you know , 91 for Ohio State was in position to make a tackle, he couldn't do it right away, but still, that's something I repeat, it's not the end. the world, but he's just, I think he needs to be a little quicker at this stuff, I'm sure you know, hey, it's a tough play to make there, but it's only going to get tougher at the NFL level, you know, the Defensive linemen are just faster once you get there, so that's probably my biggest concern about him, it can be fixed, it's a problem that can be fixed, but I'm worried if it will be fixed.
I also think just going over this now, these are a couple of examples, but again, it's a matter of consistency, if it was only two times I saw him have this problem, I wouldn't even mention it, but I saw it constantly when I watched movies. These are two examples of what I saw consistently, but let's get back to some positives because This is what I really like about it. I think he's a smart player. I think he really understands who he has to block things like this from. See, he's kind of a smart lock. A pass rush concept.
The player who is lined up on the edge goes. back into coverage, so Bashan is going to have to block the other player that's in that area, but when he starts, watch him read this play so quickly and he puts the hand back in that he wants and comes in, you know? very good position to be able to make this play, of course, he knows that when he has his hands in position he is going to make the block and he almost always has his hands in position, so he almost always makes the block. I have a couple of criticisms for Fashanu, but they don't outweigh the many positives I have.
I really see him as a good day one pass protector and maybe a good year three run blocker. I'm just wondering how you know if there is any training for that. you have to do it, it's all over and over again, if you look at the analytics you already know, the things that protect the pass are Elite the Run uh, the things that block are not so Elite, it just is what it is, but again , a lot of people would rather have a tackle that protects the pass than a tackle that blocks the run, so if you know that's why he's going to do it, you know that's why he's one of the best offensive linemen in my opinion. his draft class and one of the best players in this draft class, so yeah.
