Dressing Like Disney Characters For A Day

May 30, 2021
Hello friends and welcome to another video. This week, I'm putting together an outfit inspired by a Disney character and Disneybounding. Now, if you don't know what Disneybounding is, it's essentially wearing normal/modern clothing to dress like a Disney character, without looking like you're wearing a costume. So, using the same color palette that the character wears, focusing on specific accessories, or generally capturing the essence of the character in an outfit. The term Disneybounding comes from blogger Leslie Kay, who created a Disney fan blog called DisneyBound in 2011. Basically because she was going to Disney World and was excited to be in Disneybound.

Then one day, she created some Polyvore sets of contemporary outfits based on some of her favorite Disney

characters

. And her response was so positive that she made this the entire focus of her blog. As a result, the creation of a modern outfit in the style of a Disney character became known as "Disneybounding." The trend also became popular because people over the age of 14 are not allowed to wear costumes in Disney parks. I think because Disney doesn't want kids to confuse non-park employees with the actors they hire to tour the parks. Probably because you don't want kids approaching random people and also because Disney is very particular about how they train their actors to stay on brand.

More Interesting Facts About,

So Disneybounding allows adults to dress up as Disney

characters

without getting kicked out of the park. And over the past eight years, DisneyBounders has grown into a robust community of fans who take on the style challenge of

dressing

up as different Disney characters, and even Disney attractions in creative ways. Now I remember seeing some of these Polyvore edits on Tumblr years ago, and I was always really interested in them, even before I lived in Southern California and went to Disneyland pretty regularly. But the trend came back to my mind a couple of weeks ago when I saw that Refinery29 had made a video called "Why Adults Aren't Allowed to Wear Costumes at Disneyland." So I thought it would be fun to give it a try and try out Disneybounding myself.

And then take our attempt to Disneyland. Alright, then let's see what we can do. So the first step to get to Disney is to choose the character you want to play. Now, because the Disney community is quite large and has been around for about ten years, people have literally limited themselves to being anyone and anything, so nothing is off-limits as long as it's Disney. Personally, I enjoy classic 2D animated movies the most, preferably ones that came out before 2000, just so it has an element of nostalgia for me. So that narrows our list down from the beginning.

I'm also hoping for a character who has a clear romantic interest/friend/partner so I can get Tyler to dress up with me. And that reduces it even more. I think the first idea I had was to do Snow White. I think we've established a bit of a meme around Snow White or at least her, and she's definitely my favorite classic princess. Unfortunately, Snow White's second clear character would be Prince Charming, who is probably, of all the Disney princes, the one with the least personality. I mean, he doesn't even have a name. And he makes the questionable decision to kiss a corpse.
As MatPat says: Number one, corpse germs and number two, corpse germs. Snow White's other mate options would probably be one of the dwarves or maybe the Huntsman, which I'm not too keen on because of that whole 'I might murder you' thing. I mean he lets her go, but she thinks about it. So, in my opinion, there isn't a great fit for Tyler with Snow White. My second thought was to make a villain character since most villain costumes are more in my preferred color palette. My first instinct there was Maleficent. Of all the Disney characters, she is probably the one I would most like to dress up as.
I mean, she has the cape, the eyeliner, the bold lip, the necklace and she transforms into a dragon. She's definitely petty, but she represents her pettiness with her style. However, there really isn't a character to accompany Maleficent. Her only friend is the crow that goes out with her. And unlike other Disney birds, he himself isn't really a character. Other options for a second character could be... the spindle? I think that is all. So my third idea for Disneybound was to make Jafar from Aladdin. Also known as a Disney villain with a clear sidekick. Now, with just a cursory investigation, Jafar Disneybound seems like a decently unsaturated space.
It's over, but not by much, which is ideal. Jafar also has a pretty underrated style. He's got a nice color palette, some pointy shoulder pads, a long, sweeping cape, a golden staff, and some really wicked facial hair. Who is Sarcastic Whiplash? His companion, Iago the parrot, also has very bright colors and a lot of character, so it would be a great Disney destination for Tyler as long as he's up for it. It's also a bit topical because the live-action remake of Aladdin is coming out this month and apparently Jafar is all the rage right now. Just say.
So I think Jafar and Iago should be our choices. Well. So we have to put together two outfits that are not costumes and that also do not include any accessories that would get us kicked out of the park. They say anything that drags on the ground is a no-no, no masks. Now I've noticed that in other Disneybounds, some people will stick to a casual contemporary look and others will go for a more mid-century vibe. I think because Disneyland opened in 1955, there's a sort of '50s nostalgia wrapped up in the park. And Disney itself has also started selling Disneybound-style dresses with a sort of mid-century silhouette.
It's like a Disneybound of a decade. Now, as a fan of the decade, I think the idea of making a retro Disney adaptation seems really fun. But I feel like Jafar's aesthetic doesn't really lend itself to this style. I mean, shoulder pads say no. So I'm thinking why not choose a different decade to focus on and since the movie came out in 1992, the early '90s seemed like an obvious Choice: shoulder pads say yes. So, taking a look online, it seems like one direction we could take for Jafar is as a stylish jacket. Look, this is something that in my head is kind of from the late '80s, like the Working Girl Power Blazer.
But it seems there were still many. of Blazers in the early '90s, like in these couture shows, so something like this could be a good basis for a Jafar out-of-costume walk now for Tyler's outfit. Iago is a parrot or, to be more specific, a scarlet macaw whose tropical color palette fits well with the '90s theme, as bright, neon colors were quite present at the beginning of the decade. Iago's look is more rounded and feathered when you compare it to Jafar's very severe Angular look, so maybe we can ditch the Blazer for this one and go for something a little more casual, something that incorporates something of a blocky color or a pattern?
Iago's overall color palette is somewhat like that seen on Zack Morris from Saved by the Bell and also very notably in The Fresh Prince of Bel Air. Will Smith will also be wearing a lot of these flat-brimmed hats with cool prints that could work well as a kind of peak Now, here's something interesting: Hillary from Fresh Prince of Bel-air wears the blazer style that I wear with my look. Jafar all the time. So it's like we're Will and Hillary from Fresh Prince of Bel-Air now Here's something even more interesting Will Smith will now play the genie in the live-action Aladdin movie in 2019 So it's all coming full circle, does it feel good?
Well, at least our outfits, so we went shopping at a few different stores. Vintage and not to look for our outfits starting with our search for blazers No zero, yes, they would be more eye-catching. I don't know how to find a real change Yes, but we need something that we decided from the beginning: we were going to go with a black jacket partly because there just weren't that many red options. It's not quite right, it's more Cruella, but also because Jafar's outer cloaks are black and then the inside of his cloak is red. This turned out to be harder than we thought, its not quite in shape at the moment.
Yes, this is more like a ringmaster But then we found this mannequin adorned exactly like the silhouette we were looking for, the Blazer itself is pretty simple But it has the right boxy look, so we decided to go with it as to what to put underneath We needed something red so we found this plain high neck t-shirt dress to represent her layer underneath and with the base of my outfit now accounted for, it was time to embark on an accessory hunt that I originally advocated, I'm stuck So, one of The defining elements of Jafar's outfit is his golden serpent staff.
He really likes snakes. I mean, he turns into a snake, so we were definitely looking for some snake stuff. We quickly came across this golden snake belt. That seems correct. That's great. It's not a cobra but it's a snake. Could it be a rattlesnake? Sure! A snake? In addition to being snake-like, it could also be used to tie our blazer around the waist, as is the case with this mannequin. Then we caught him. On top of that, we also ordered this bracelet to hand wrap just to have even more snake. Right now, I'm going to be a snake while that guy goes cowbelling.
The other notable accessory Jafar wears is his headdress, which is mostly black but includes a red feather and a red jewel. Now there were a lot of hats in the early 90s that people seem to have worn Blazers, but they don't all fit me very well. This can't be right. No. Yes, this can't be right. It's almost like a Cyndi-Lauper-from-hell look. What's happening? Where I am? Luckily, we had this black bowler hat that we wore in our 1987 fashion video that seemed like the right look, and we found this red scarf that we could tie around it to represent Jafar's red feather.
We should try it. Yes. We should try it to replace the jewel on his hat. We found this type of pendant brooch online. It looked like it would pair well with a jacket and also looks a lot like his own. So we ordered that too, so with some progress on my outfit, it was time to adopt Tyler's look, which started with our search for a color-blocked top. And luckily for us, this kind of 90s casual style is very trendy right now. So we were able to find quite a few options to try on. That's not bad.
It's like Toucan Sam vibes. Like windbreaker combos, it's not red enough, is it? No, it's really... green. What I would describe as Chandler Bing style button down shirts. It's like a bowling shirt. And this hoodie is quite promising. Oh, that's great. That blue looks very good. It has the vibrations of wings. It's very yellow and blue Yes, but if the rest of your outfit is red I feel like it would work. So we decided to use this as our top. The other main features we had to buy were his beak and claws. We had mentioned before that we would probably want a hat to replace his beak.
Don't know. There's as much yellow in this as there is in a hoodie. I feel like you should turn red. His beak is orange, but his head is red. So we thought the shape of the hat was enough to suggest his pecking abilities. This is the vibe regarding his feet. We found a couple of trucks that could work and could be a talent. maybe and with that we were done with Tyler's outfit, especially since we had ruled out any other accessories from the beginning in Keanu Reeves' yoga. Yeah, well, he leaves Vanilli. So with our outfits chosen, we were bound for Disney.
I stick to that. Ok, now we are here at Disneyland ready to vlog about our outfits. We came a little bit in the afternoon just because it's a little hot outside and there's a roller coaster and our outfits are pretty young. too steep Broken voice very badly frozen Oh, a parrot, we had entered the park without problems So I think our Disney limits had passed the test of not being a disguise So we have a couple of hours wandering around Taking some photos and then Seeing how we look, it seems like a popular move to take a photo with the Disney character actor you're traveling with or go to a part of the park that has some theme associated with your character for Disneyland in Los Angeles.
Adventureland is the place that has a little bit of that weird Aladdin Agrabah feel, but there isn't much, they use them in a lion-themed restaurant, but it's gone. But here all we have is the bazaar and your party was also very full. The city is a madhouse. This is a busy area. Everyone wants a piece of her, even a crying child. So for our important Instagram, we went somewhere else. So at this momentwe are filming where the star wars land will be just because they have become good as arid and desert looking rocks Yes and with enough desert II The background chosen it was time to review our final outfits so for my Jafar look I ended up with a black bowler hat and a red sash, our black jacket with shoulder pads, a red dress, black stockings, bright red loafers, golden snakes, a golden bag, not a lamp. but he is padded and has some red and gold vintage jewelry pieces.
One good thing is that the temples are branded. Unfortunately, although my sideburns are quite thick, my other facial hair could have been better. I've noticed that you try to stroke your beard several times. You recently had a long one, right? That was a mistake. I wasn't thinking about the lack of beard video separately. I also put together a Jafar-inspired makeup look that included some purple eyeshadow and heavy eyeliner to cement my villainy and also protect my eyes from the desert sun. So eyeliner serves both a fashionable and practical purpose. It's always like an evil football player in the desert.
Exactly, as for Tyler's final Iago look, we ended up with a red flat-brimmed hat, red, yellow, and blue hoodie, red sweatpants, and orange sneakers. I didn't shave because I feel like Iago is the kind of guy who has a five o'clock shadow. Or in my case, a five-day shadow. He doesn't grow facial hair on me. very fast, but I thought it fit the personality now. I will say that even though Tyler's outfit had fewer elements than mine. I think he embraced his character with great enthusiasm. Besides the 90s vibes, I feel like I'm ready to give it a try.
There you have it. There you go. Yes, you go so fast. Do you want to get out of the box? Well ahead. Any further you won't be out. No, further away. You are out? Unfortunately, I think all his dancing got him pretty hot pretty quickly. After our individual shots, we needed some photos of Jafar and Iago together, starring Mary-Kate and Ashley Olsen in that quest for power and world domination, and then some different photos. attempts, including a couple where Tyler nearly hurt himself. We finally had some photos that were suitable for Graham now. While Disney's boundaries don't have to be super obvious to other people, I was curious to see what you guys would think of our attempt. specifically, if you could guess who we were trying to be and also if you thought we nailed it, so I uploaded these three photos to Instagram to get some opinions based on your guys' comments, I would actually say that most of you could identify that we were trying to be Jafar and Iago.
I think Tyler's pose in the third photo is a bit of a clue, but I still feel like it's a positive indicator of our efforts that you all were able to guess I was too. I'm really excited to see a lot of people guessing our late 80s/early 90s Inspo, like Will and Hilary from Fresh Prince Lisa and Screech from Saved by the Bell, Dionne and Murray from the clueless Heather's Just Generally and also the Backstreet Boys in Paris gone wrong. I guess there were also some less accurate guesses that I enjoyed, like Caillou Carmen Sandiego and Alvin the Squirrel Cruella Deville and Snow White the Pixar Ball and my last two brain cells deciding what I should wear, so I guess overall I'd say this was a Disney link successfully streamed, mainly now that with the social media portion of the Disney boundary experience complete, it was time for us to explore the park in character.
Be careful with the mind control, hey, back up, shall we buy some churros? You will buy churros and marry me to the princess. So we return to our little piece of Agrabah in Adventureland or find a magic mosaic carpet to pose next to, but sadly not much else. Here is another Aladdin themed attraction. It's a penny flattening machine that's premium content. They are really lighting it up on Aladdin TV, especially for having a movie about to be released, yes, also because all three designs are Milano looms, in fact, it was pretty. Surprised by how few Aladdin products they had for sale.
Where is the Jafar? Commodity. Where is Iago's March? We're both getting into trouble here. Listen, I'm hot now, don't you know? So I had to settle for some rubber snakes. Say hello to my little friend. Do you need more snakes? Jafar meets Britney And then Tyler, for his part, found a yellow and red macaw, which could have been Iago or could have just been a Rando bird from the Tiki Room. Are you looking at an acrylic parrot like that Birdman? That is a mating dance. Are you trying to mate with the acrylic parrot? Should I be jealous?
This is strange after having completely exhausted all the Aladdin themed stuff. We were able to find that we continued exploring, although I would say that the heat from the multiple layers of my outfit and Tyler's sweatshirt were becoming more and more exhausting. Good. Tyler feels very hot, very steamy and quite sweaty. He knew it well. My back is a little sweaty right under the jacket, belt, and leggings, but my feet are fine for now. What's a big win? I feel like part of the challenge of jumping to Disney is that you have to wear your Disneyland outfit and I'm doing well so far, so after jumping around the park riding the carousel, eating dinner, and trying to steal a giant torch, I think.
It was time to end our day of touring Disney. Alright. Are you ready to come home? Yes. Finally my feet started to hurt. I'm sweaty, Fresh Prince of Bel-air, more like Swamp Prince of Bel-air. Am I about to buy a candy? So, that was our overall experience at Disney? I really enjoyed the process of putting these outfits together, from choosing the characters to figuring out how to represent the different components of their look with modern clothing - in our case, including a '90s-inspired vibe made it a little more challenging. But you know, I love myself. a few decades so I'm always down, besides that I also thought it was fun to try to straddle the line between I like the suit and the costume and I think there's a chance we'll try to jump into Disney again in the future.
Come to think of it, Maleficent. and the spindle could be an interesting option. I mean, maybe we could give Tyler one of those spiky punk hairstyles that stick out straight up. It's not necessarily the right decade for 1959, but it could be fun.
