We Made Our Own Lion King Reboot

Feb 23, 2020
Hi, my name is Clinton Jones and this is my audition tape for the upcoming Lion King remake, uh, whenever that is, oh, I don't have high hopes for this video, so as many of you know, I'm passionate about it. much being. a physical actor is very fun to me it's very exciting i played chatbot in video games in high school i played the robot in boston dynamics videos i love moving and being silly and silly and all that now it hurts me not to see more physical actors in hollywood you know jim carrey i haven't seen jim carrey one minute installment jackie chan where have you been charlie chaplin it's been too long but there's one thing I've noticed I think the more physical actors right now are doing motion capture work and honestly , I can't compete with the big players in Hollywood right now, Andy Circus, you know you saw it and the Planet of the Apes perfectly adopted the appearance of a chimpanzee, Benedict Cumberbatch as Shema Smag, he was a perfect dragon, you saw it. on the ground it was getting in well, I don't know how they translated the movement to the dragon, but it was great, it was great, there is a pattern, there is a very specific pattern here and I think they are animals, I need to make some animals.

To really diversify my motion capture, my actual physical acting reel I watched the new Lion King trailer and was blown away by how good those animals look. It's the gold standard for CG animals right now that look too real. It's crazy if I can apply a movement. capture the suit and recreate my own versions of simba rafiki, even if I came close to the look and essence of those animals that could take my motion capture reel to the next level, not only would I become the

lion

king

, but it would be the

king

of motion capture, look out Andy, I'm coming for you, we're making a Lion King video, we have to do some fan service here, let's do some scenes that are really recognizable and will give you a good opportunity to capture the pride .

More Interesting Facts About,

we made our own lion king reboot...

The rock scene holding little Simba is super iconic, we should definitely start with that, wait, wait, wait, just without even hearing this, yeah, watching the beginning of the circle of life, I don't have high hopes for this video. close hakuna, do you think that just doing some capers you have to move your head and the little guy in the front just says this scene will show the diversity of animals that clint is able to portray because we have a meerkat, a wild boar and a

lion

I have the third thing here we go I want to see the first scene here's the third scene I'm just looking for a tear this is what we're not doing facial motion capture clowns I haven't chosen the models yet I know Clint wants to do something really dramatic I just want to make sure Let's lower our expectations because, again, the motion capture suit doesn't capture facial movement, so if Clint chooses a scene that's too intense, I might not go through with it, but I don't want to stop him.

I have to do my homework. You have to study these animals. Guys, Benedict Cumberbatch, based on his performance, I would say that he spent at least 24 to 48 hours researching dragons. Half of that was Skyrim. the other half was probably fire rain, so it was a good mix. I have to do the same job guys. I have to dedicate the same time. I have to study all these animals. I need to study its limitations, its quirks, all of these. everything goes together to bring the animal to life, male lion, Africa, hd, 30 seconds, that's all I need. I studied with Eric Morris, who has been teaching acting for over half a century.

He would host these jamborees as an acting camp. The last one I did was animals, you embody an animal, you observe an animal, you take on its characteristics, you become the animal so you can incorporate some of those animal traits into your performance before you go subtle, you have to go 100, you have You have to go with everything, you know? You had 12 to 15 actors in a room all portraying animals and working with animals and it looked like a madhouse so I'm going to work on a few different animals for the next hour here so when I get back to the studio and I put that suit on I won't come in as Clint.
I'll come in as simba as timon pumba rafiki and we'll knock it out of the park that's not like clint he's jumping like an animal he thinks he's an animal but he's not an animal okay this is where all this fantasy and imagination and all this stuff comes together encounter reality, now it comes down to turning him into an animal, okay, so how the hell do you do that? What the hell does that mean? But think seriously. about that a person who acts like a tiger and then turns him into a tiger using that real acting.
What is your paw supposed to be? The proportions of a tiger are totally different. What am I going to do with a human's motion capture data? This is the thing that people don't think about, they think it's easy, they think it's okay just because I acted like a dragon, you just drag and drop a dragon onto their body. I have to take Clint's motion capture data and his performance and somehow put it together. in the body of an animal, how the hell do you do that? I don't know, I don't know, there's a lot of pressure, I'm sorry, I'm sorry, I could be giving us the best animal performance anyone has ever seen, but I can't.
Realizing that dream and realizing what he's doing in a visual form, then all that talent goes to waste. My weed is chillin', what's up folks, oh geez, dude? You're probably wondering why I don't have any clothes on and that's the second thing I'm wondering about and that's because today's sponsor is Privacy.com. Now with Privacy.com, my online purchases are so secure that I no longer need privacy in real life. It's not for me. This will be normal. It's not a thing, Clinton, it's a way of life, it's the same as privacy.com. You see with every online purchase you make, that online retailer now has your credit card information and if they get hacked, they hack you with privacy.com, they use military. grade encryption and then uses virtual cards with fictitious numbers to ensure your real card information is never shared.
The site itself doesn't actually have your number, only you will. It's not how it should be when it's over, Jake. Can you throw a chair away this is Clint's chair not Jake Privacy.com also works with Chrome extensions it's really very easy it's good I could do something like that in my life I just wanted to say that all you have to do, Clint, it's go to privacy. com runner team privacy.com fourth team and if you use that link to sign up you'll get an extra five bucks free to spend on whatever you want thanks Jake, shoot buddy, are we putting too much into it?
I think all these brands. They're coming back to your mind I'm going to be ready to go here what's the first scene? This seems so crazy. I don't know, I'm really worried about this, so I'm really excited for this Benedict Cumbers and Andy circus. Clinton Jones is as good as they are, but I don't know if I'm as good as the other visual effects artists. This is going to look great, man, but you can't trade a team of 200 VFX artists for Sam. Sam. be the last person to say I don't know anything about this oh no we're just doing Janky Lion King naturally as an actor.
I would like to prepare for the dramatic scene. You know, so I can. You know, just warm up while I. Go like Clint now, I think we're ready to do this motion capture. Are you guys auditioning right now? Yes, he will come and bless the child, take him away, and then hold him up on the edge of the cliff, which is. probably the white tape that is the edge of the clip okay, here we go, I'm going to record this, Clint, you got a take, give it your all, I'm ready, capturing sync, clap your hands, Clint, very good performance, everything good, first, a good job, friend, thanks. you're a lion cub again i knew it, i knew this scene was coming i knew the scene was coming he's got a bit of a character this is going to be great okay simba just uh don't bite me or anything watch what you do , you pretend that you're dad, he's passed away and you're standing over his coffin and you're going to tell him all the things you wish you'd done with him when he was alive, but it's too late, it's too late, I don't know, I think this is going Let's make it break, covering up applause and action dad, get up, come on, let's go home, hey, come on, dad, someone, help, help, okay, let's do one more, one more, one more.
I need you to turn your acting knob up to 11. Okay. bad don't use okay take a break clint you have one more chance the idea is that you embody an animal you take on its characteristics you become the animal you have to go 100 percent one more chance here yeah, yeah, dad, dad, come on. go home dad come on someone help anyone buddy that was the only buddy that's a wrap for scene two scene two baby you did it that was amazing now if you've ever Had an out of body experience that is a fraction of what it feels like, I had finally done it, I transcended my human form, just a simple flash of time, I was Simba the king of the animals, oh friend, that's a wrap , that's a wrap, I'm a king liar 3. that's a good audition tape if I've ever seen one.
I appreciate it. I'm glad to add it to the reel. We're counting on the same thing here to bring this to life as far as visuals go and I'm very excited, very excited to see the finale. result, I'm ready to make these lion manes, if we're going to take Clinton to the third version of the lion king, we need to show you a good look at the final product here, so I decided to help the guys out. With some hair simulations, that means I had to learn how to style hair. This afternoon, when you do the hair in the programs, it basically creates little lines and these lines are like your guide hairs and then when you render it, it fills in. all the hairs in the middle, so you're just working with a manageable amount of stuff, then I'm figuring out how to do all the physics and stuff so that when it moves, the hair bounces and moves and bumps into things and then it make it shine.
Pretty, I think I'm close enough for this project, so I learned how to style hair. Hair also works great for grass. I'm doing Pride Rock. I have grass hair and I applied a little turbulence to all the waves in it. wind, so you know it's your basic fried rock, really very basic, but you know what happens when you apply displacement textures to it. Oh, it looks so good, it's starting to look pretty good. This object here, the royal pride rock sticking out, my model is super. basic, but when you apply a texture that has scroll textures, it adds all this extra texture, you can turn them both up, it's going to look really crazy, you're going to see all these rocks sticking out, it's going to add more details and more polygonal details to your surface, like actually It's changing the shape of the model and making it look like you spent a lot of time modeling rocks.
I'm very happy with that. Nico just said that the motion capture looks pretty good and I have to agree that the motion capture suit worked really well as well. The actor who wore this suit acted very well yes, I did my best. I'm trying to figure out the best way to translate his emotions into these animals. There are a couple of methods and this is method one. This is the pet method, so here is the other method. of using Clint's real bones or redirecting Clint's performance to baboon proportions, but wait, it doesn't look that bad, it's pretty good, yeah dude, yeah, I think the consensus is that this is the best version um, yeah, it's a step in the right direction.
It's very crazy. I hope I don't ruin your performance and believe me, it goes much better when you have long, flowing hair all over your body. Well I hope so. I know I just am. destroy them, but these are some incredibly high quality models from turbosquid.com, you should obviously check them out. Thanks to them, there is a central problem within all of this, which is that, since I don't know how to do it, it looks like a lion. that just came out of a bat of acid like it's over, I don't know how to do it.
I'm making tutorials as fast as I can. We only have a day or two to work on this here and I have to get moving. Let's move on to other projects after this. This is stressing me out because I'm actually trying to do it right. I'm going to make it work. I'll make it work for Clint. You figured it out right. I didn't qualify once again. It's not like he's using a process, good friend, it looks pretty good. You are running. Each one requires a completely new method of handling it. Basically, I need to handle these animals as if they were humans.
The challenge, however, is its proportions. Well, they are not human and if I make them human proportions it will not look like an animal, it will look like a man in a suit or a hairy man. Each model is not in a human pose. Basically, I need to get these. animals on a T-post standing on their two feet with their arms extended like this. I'm using soft selection tools to gently reshape the animals into basically Christ-like figures. Those are the real challenges here. You'll need a wall here. man, because I can't help but look and see what you're going through.
I'll get the reactionmost natural visceral you've ever had and we're going to record it on camera, maybe so it works better. I'll put it on my side, that's pretty good, okay, you can see my reactions, man Dean, look at this, this Clint will have like a baton, oh my God, man, it was the acting, the good acting is on point, man, it's okay, because I can. I don't see anything because you put up that tarp. Hey, I want to show you something we worked really hard on. This is what you've been doing. All week I see this flag here.
I worked so hard on this that I literally put a black flag here so Clint can't look at my monitors until now. I present to you his motion capture performance reel. I just want to say that it's like Christmas came early. year so thanks sam I really appreciate it excited for you clint hi my name is clinton jones and this is my audition hi my name is clinton jones and this is my audition tape for the next remake of the lion king whenever that is me yeah wow That was super intense and your performance obviously shows, it was great.
Next is your musical number, you will love it. There, Clint is playing these three animals, by the way, so it was your turn, that was the special. nico, did you make these environments? I actually

made

them, yes, they are absolutely very nice, thank you, but guys, it's not about my backgrounds, it's about Clinton's performance. I'm just setting the stage for the star to shine. This is beyond what I thought. Wow, we have another one, there's another one, this is the sad one, so I remember this scene that you described before like well, you just saw dad, come on, anyone, that's actually your voice, that's my voice, it's still a little bit sad oh man hire this man.
It's pretty incredible, like you can see Clint's actual movement, that's what Clint's motion capture is actually like. I didn't manipulate it or reanimate it or do anything like the main g, the main one doesn't look as good, there's too much hair for this. to render in time, so I think the hairs split in the middle and it looks a little weird. You are such a diverse and dramatic character actor. I try, I give everything. We spent the whole week working on that. I'm very impressed by how janky it is. mufasa or whatever his name is, look here, simba actually doesn't look that bad, it's still really horrible, but cinematic, I'm going to work on my meerkat a little more and focus on that because I think that's how it felt good.
To me, if you're one of the 45 percent of people who don't subscribe to this channel, I mean, make sure you hit that subscribe button. We have a video coming out next week where we're actually lighting Clint. finally on fire so it was a crazy week making this and thank you for watching and joining us in that process because we'll leave you here with the final product enjoy mmm cool dad come on anyone.
