Top 20 Strongest New Pokemon in Pokemon Sword & Shield

Jun 10, 2021
- Greetings, Pokefans! Here Michael, and Pokémon Sword and Shield, like any new generation of Pokémon, have introduced a whole new batch of Pokémon. Almost any Pokémon fan would want to know which of these Pokémon are the most impressive, so today I'm counting down the 20

strongest

new Pokémon in Sword and Shield. However, I need to clarify a few things before I begin. The first is that this ranking will be done based solely on Pokémon's base stat totals. This is what I've done for each ranking of the

strongest

Pokémon in the past.

Also, I like to do it this way because it's a numerical way of classifying it rather than a subjective one. Any ties will be broken based on which Pokémon has the highest offensive stat. In other words, if two Pokémon have the same base stat total, the stronger one is the one whose attack or special attack is higher. I do it this way because people tend to associate strength with how hard they can hit. If they are still tied, then the second tiebreaker is a head-to-head type matchup. Galarian forms count as new Pokémon, and if a Pokémon has multiple forms with different base stat totals, only the form with the highest base stat total will be included in this list.

More Interesting Facts About,

top 20 strongest new pokemon in pokemon sword shield...

It would be unconvincing if one species of Pokémon occupied multiple entries. Also, in case it wasn't obvious, this video will be full of spoilers. So without further ado, don't forget to leave a like on the video and let's start with number 20, which is a four-way tie, because of course it is. Pokémon Sword and Shield introduced the most unique fossil Pokémon to date. Instead of just getting a certain fossil that you then revive into a certain Pokémon, you get fossil halves that you then revive together in pairs. There are two fossils in the top half and two in the bottom half, resulting in four different combinations and therefore four different Pokémon.

Side note: I'm really happy they finally stopped the trend of turning every fossil Pokémon into a rock type. I always thought that was nonsense. Like, oh, just because it was revived from a fossil it's now a rock-type Pokémon, even though it probably wasn't a rock-type Pokémon millions of years ago. Like Archeops, nothing about Archeops has to do with rocks, so I'm glad they stopped doing that. Anyway, the four possible fossil Pokémon are Dracozolt, Arctozolt, Arctovish, and Dracovish. They are wild, ridiculous, mismatched creatures, and I love their creativity. But like I said, this entry is a four-way tie, because these four fossil Pokémon have a total base stat of 505.
top 20 strongest new pokemon in pokemon sword shield
So to break that tie, we go to the one with the highest offensive stat. Neither Dracovish nor Arctovish are the strongest, because their base attack stats of 90 are not high enough. However, Dracozolt and Arctozolt are tied because they both have an attack stat of 100. That means I have to go to the secondary tiebreaker, which is a head-to-head matchup. Since Dracozolt is an Electric Dragon type and Arctozolt is an Electric Ice type, Arctozolt would be more likely to win based on type effectiveness alone, making Arctozolt the strongest of these four and therefore the 20th Pokémon. stronger.
Now let's move on to number 19, which is Sirfetch'd. Sirfetch'd has a total base stat of 507, a very respectable total base stat. Its HP, special attack, and speed are quite disappointing, but its defenses are much better. However, where he really shines is in his physical attack stat, which is a devastating 135. In case you need something to compare it to, it's five points higher than Garchomp's. Sirfetch'd is a very respectably strong Pokémon and is definitely a big upgrade in the Farfetch'd stats department. Both the regular Farfetch and the Galarian would only have a base stat total of 377, which was extremely poor for a Pokémon that for so long was unable to evolve.
The next strongest Pokémon has a base stat total that is just one point higher than Sirfetch'd, with number 18 being Polteageist. Polteageist has a total base stat of 508. While his HP, attack, defense, and speed are okay, his special stats really shine. Its special defense is 114 and its special attack stat is an excellent 134. Polteageist may not seem like a particularly imposing Pokémon, but I think it will end up being really good. He has access to Shell Smash and Weak Armor, which can improve his mediocre speed and also drastically increase the power of his stored power move.
I think he will be a force to be reckoned with. The following entries are actually a five-way tie, because there are five Pokémon that have total base stats of 510. Just a reminder, the tie will be broken based on their highest offensive stat. Because of this tiebreaker method, number 17 ends up being Coalossal. Coalossal has 80 as its base attack and special attack stats, which is okay but not great, which is why it ended up as the lowest of all base 510 Pokémon. However, that doesn't mean it's easy to get, as Coalossal definitely fills more of a tank role.
It is very slow, but it makes up for it with very good defenses, with 110 base HP, 120 physical defense, and 90 special defense. Unfortunately, its type isn't very good defensively, as Rock, Fire has two different weaknesses four times, but with access to some pretty strong moves like Heat Crash or Gyro Ball, as well as having access to Tar Shot, which can weaken your enemies to shoot. -type movements, I think it can end up being quite decent. The next Pokémon with a total of 510 base stats is number 16, Sandaconda. His tiebreaker stat is his physical attack, which is 107, which I think is pretty solid.
Sandaconda is in a similar situation to Coalossal, where they tend to be better on the defensive front. Her best stat is her physical defense, which is actually higher than Coalossal's, and she is also much faster. But in exchange for increased physical attack, physical defense, and speed, it ends up with a much lower special attack, special defense, and HP than Coalossal. Sandaconda is an interesting and cool Pokémon, but I have a hard time believing it will make a name for itself in the competitive scene. His physical attack and defense are very solid, but the rest of his stats I don't think are good enough to make a real name for himself.
Maybe he's good on Sandstorm teams, but he doesn't even have access to Sand Stream. You gain access to Sand Spit, which is just worse Sand Stream, because you have to take a hit before Sandstorm activates. Like I said, I like Sandaconda, I think it's cool, but I'm not sure how good it will be. Next up is number 15, Grimmsnarl, the first fully evolved Dark Fairy-type Pokémon and a hideous monster. I like a bit. Grimmsnarl's best stat is his base 120 attack, which put him in third place among this total base 510 tie. His next best stats are his HP and his special attack, both 95, and the rest of his stats are mediocre .
Grimmsnarl isn't the fastest Pokémon, but with its access to Prankster, which prioritizes utility status moves, I think it could end up being somewhat useful in either an offensive or utility-first role. We interrupt this video to bring you a special newsletter. My new t-shirt, the Coffee It's Super Effective t-shirt will only be on sale for a few more days. Be sure to pick one up using the link in the description below or by clicking on the shirts shown below the video. Next up is number 14, Hatterene. This psychic fairy type Pokémon is a little strange to me because it's supposed to be a lady with a hat?
What is the design inspiration for this? I don't know. If you know, tell me in the comments, because right now, all I have is a woman in a hat. (bell) Hatterene has an incredible special attack stat of 136, making it the 14th strongest new Pokémon. Their defenses are also pretty solid, with 95 base defense and 103 special defense. Additionally, his physical attack isn't horrible, coming in at a base 90. Where Hatterene really falls short is in his base HP of 57 and his horrendous base speed of just 29. However, despite his poor speed, I foresee him Hatterene will be quite solid in the competitive scene, especially in the doubles format.
He would be awesome on a Trick Room team, plus he has a new move called Life Dew, which heals himself and his allies, which is really cool, and he has the healer ability, which only works in double battles. So I think Hatterene will be pretty solid. And the last new base 510 Pokémon is number 13, Cursola, the evolution of Galarian Corsola. Cursola actually has a pretty similar stat to Hatterene. His speed stat is one point higher, his HP is three points higher, his physical attack is five points higher, and his special attack, his best stat, is nine points higher, reaching the absurd figure of 145.
Where they differ is that Cursola took a lot of points in physical defense and moved them to special defense, resulting in a very high special defense of 130. I'm really interested to see how viable Cursola ends up becoming. Like Hatterene, he'll be awesome on Trick Room teams, but other than that, I'm not too sure. His terrible speed combined with poor physical defense could mean he ends up getting knocked out before he has a chance to attack. In fact, I think there's a good chance he'll end up being used less than his pre-evolution Galarian Corsola, which ends up with spectacular defenses if he's holding an Eviolite.
Then we'll have to see. Alright, that finally ends the five-way tie between the 510 total base Pokémon, so next we have another damn tie. Fortunately, this tie is only between two Pokémon, and both have a total base stat of 520. The last member of this tie is number 12, Obstagoon. Obstagoon's best offensive stat is its physical attack, which is base 90. This is pretty solid, but it's actually only Obstagoon's third best stat, behind its base 93 HP and base physical defense of 101. His other stats are a low special attack which is completely fine, a solid base 81 special defense, and a pretty good base 95 speed.
This makes Obstagoon's stats pretty balanced because his worst Special Attack stat is one he probably won't use anyway. I really think the only thing holding Obstagoon back is his typing, as Dark, Normal isn't that good defensively. But who knows, maybe it could be really surprising. I hope so, because it would be great to see. The other 520 base Pokémon in total is number 11, Mr. Rime. The evolution of Mr. Mime de Galar. This Ice Psychic-type Pokémon has a special attack stat of 110, which of course surpasses Obstagoon's physical attack stat of 90. Mr. Rime has a pretty good special defense of 100, and the rest of its stats are quite balanced between 70 and 85. range.
I personally think that if Mr. Rime ends up being a widely used Pokémon, it will be a utility Pokémon. Because it has access to a lot of really good utility moves, like Baton Pass, screens, terrain, and Rapid Spin, which, if you didn't know, were greatly improved in this generation. Not only is its power increased, but it also gives the user a speed boost. So expect to see Rapid Spin a lot more. Next up is number 10, Centiskorch. This new Fire-type Pokémon has a total base stat of 525. It has an impressive physical attack stat of 115 combined with a great HP stat of 100.
Its special attack and special defense are pretty solid, but its physical defense and speed They leave a little more to be desired. I think Centiskorch is a really cool Pokémon, so I really hope it ends up being good. He has some really good abilities and Flash Fire and White Smoke, but he's a little slower, so I think he'll have success as a Choice Scarf user. Also, thanks to Centiskorch and Salazzle for finally being Pokémon other than Heatmor to have access to Fire Lash. Numbers nine, eight, and seven are another tie, this time a three-way tie between the fully evolved Galar Starters, Rillaboom, Cinderace, and Inteleon.
According to my tiebreaker method, number nine ends up being Cinderace because her best offensive stat, her base 116 physical attack, is lower than Rillaboom and Inteleon's best offensive stats. Cinderace's best stat is her speed, a dazzling 119. The rest of her stats besides attack are disappointing, but that's okay since Cinderace's role will definitely end up being a fast physical sweeper. The fact that Cinderace is the lowest ranked starter is proof that my tiebreaker method is somewhat flawed. Because in reality, Cinderace will probably end up being the best starter competitively due to her hidden ability. His hidden ability is Libero, an ability that is currently unavailable but will likely be in the future, and works the same as Protean.
And we saw what Protean did with theviability of Greninja. For the next two starters, we have another situation like Dracozolt and Arctozolt, where their best offensive stats are the same. Rillaboom's physical attack is 125 and Inteleon's special attack is 125. So we do the type showdown, the head-to-head matchup, and of course Rillaboom wins. Therefore, number eight is Inteleon. Inteleon is another fast sweeper like Cinderace, he is actually faster and hits harder than Cinderace, but he is a bit more fragile. As of now, I think he has the advantage over Cinderace in terms of viability, but once his hidden abilities become available, Cinderace will definitely gain the advantage because Libero is much better than the sniper.
And next, of course, is number seven, Rillaboom. Rillaboom is much slower than the other two starters, but he is much bulkier, with a base stat of 100 HP, 90 defense, and 70 special defense. Plus, he's not very slow either. 85 base speed is nothing to scoff at. His hidden ability is Grassy Surge, which will no doubt be quite useful once it's available, because it's basically a free buff for all of Rillaboom's Grass-type moves. Next up is number six, Duraludon. He has a total base stat of 535, and the stats he excels at are physical defense, which is base 115, and special attack, which is base.120.
His base physical attack is 95, which is still pretty solid, and his base speed is a decent 85. Unfortunately, his base HP is only 70 and his base special defense is only 50, so he wouldn't handle strong land power. or Focus Blast very well. Note how I specified those two moves, though, because grappling and ground are Duraludon's only weaknesses, two types that tend to be more physical. Dragon Steel is just a fantastic defensive type, he only has those two weaknesses I mentioned and then he has nine resistances plus immunity. With Duraludon's excellent stats, I find it hard to believe that Duraludon won't end up being a great Pokémon in the competitive scene.
We finally get to the top five, and number five is one you may not have even known existed: the Galarian Darmanitan Zen Mode. Darumaka and Darmanitan gained ice-type Galarian forms in Sword and Shield and maintained the same base stat totals as their original forms, being 315 and 480 respectively. However, remember that Darmanitan's hidden ability is Zen Mode, which causes him to change into this form that is basically a statue when his health reaches less than half. For normal Darmanitan, his Zen Mode form is Fire Psychic type and has a total base stat of 540. For Galarian Darmanitan, his Zen Mode also has a total base stat of 540, but instead of gaining the psychic type, gains Fire-type, making Zen Mode Galarian Darmanitan the first Ice-Fire-type Pokémon to ever exist.
Freezing Fire is a combo type that I desperately wanted to be in the game, but I have to admit I'm disappointed because it's just a hard-to-access alternate form that isn't even as viable as not having that form. If you didn't know, Galarian Darmanitan's normal ability is Gorilla Tactics. Spelled like the animal, not like actual guerrilla tactics, which are basically a built-in automatic Choice Band. So if you combine that with a Choice Band, Galarian Darmanitan hits hard. So you almost never want to have a Galarian Darmanitan in Zen mode. So it kinda sucks that the ice fire type is stuck in a form that no one is going to use.
Number four is the last non-legendary on this list, because it is a pseudo-legendary, being Dragapult. This Dragon ghost type, like any other pseudo-legendary, has a total base stat of 600. It has an absurdly high speed stat of 142. Which is the 14th highest base speed of any form of Pokémon. If you remove the Pokémon that are not available in Sword and Shield, it has the fourth highest speed. That speed pairs excellently with his base 120 attack and base 100 usable special attack. Its volume, of course, is nothing surprising, but it is not terrible either. Combine that with its clear body that will prevent it from being slowed or intimidated, and you have a Pokémon that will definitely be a meta-defining threat in the competitive Sword and Shield scene.
Now we come to number three, which is Eternatus. Now, those of you who have done a little more research may be confused as to why Eternatus is number three and not number one. Before I get into why it is number three, I should explain to those of you who don't know why some might think it should be number one. Normally, Eternatus has a base stat total of 690, a very good base stat total. It's 10 points more than most legendary buffs, like Mewtwo or Zekrom. It has incredible HP, special attack and speed, which are 140, 145 and 130 respectively. The rest of his stats are pretty solid as well, with his lowest stat being physical attack, the stat he's much less likely to use.
It is a very strong legendary Pokémon that will of course be banned from most battle formats. However, Eternatus also has another form, his form being Eternamax. This form has an absolutely disgusting base stat total of 1125, the highest base stat total ever seen in Pokémon. Its HP, defense, and special defense are at least 250. Then its special attack and speed are 125 and 130, and just to sweeten the deal, its attack is 115. It is by far the strongest Pokémon that has ever existed, but it's not real either. Okay, I don't know if real is the best word.
Maybe usable is better, because Eternamax Eternatus is not usable. From now on, no player will be able to use an Eternamax Eternatus against an enemy Pokémon. The only time this form is seen in battle is in the climactic battle atop Hammerlocke Stadium. That's the only place it is. It's not anywhere else. Additionally, this stat distribution is misleading, because the battle you fight is a four-on-one battle. This base stat total was given to this form of Eternatus to make the battle more like a Max Raid Battle. You will never have to fight one on one. This base stat total is in code for a boss fight, not a normal Pokémon battle.
Therefore, I don't think Eternamax Eternatus should count as the new strongest Pokémon, much less the strongest Pokémon of all time. Every other Pokémon I've talked about in the Strongest Pokémon series has been one that you yourself could use in battle. Including a form of Pokémon that's only there for a singular boss battle that's basically a Max Raid, that just didn't make sense to me. But I wanted to address this because I know many of you know that Eternamax Eternatus exists. So I knew if I didn't talk about it you would wonder why I didn't talk about it.
With that covered, that leaves the regular Eternatus as the third strongest new Pokémon. Like I said, it's very, very good, but it's also a legendary Pokémon, so it will probably be banned in most competitive formats. But it should be fun to use in Max Raid Battles. Now it's time for the last two Pokémon that you've probably already discovered. Those are box art legends Zacian and Zamazenta. Both Pokémon actually have two forms, their Hero of Many Battles form and their Crowned Sword and Crowned Shield forms. As I said at the beginning, a Pokémon with multiple forms will only count as one entry, and whichever one is stronger is the one that matters, assuming the stronger form can actually be used in battle.
Of course, Eternatus, you know we don't count that one. The hero forms of these two Pokémon have a base stat total of 670. That's very good, but it's lower than Eternatus' base stat total. Their crowned forms are substantially stronger, with total base stats of 720. That means they are tied with Arceus for the 7th highest base stats of all Pokémon and all forms, including Megas and Primaries, but excluding Eternamax Eternatus. . But that also means they're tied, so I have to use the tiebreaker method that I've used throughout this entire video, the highest offensive stat. As you've probably predicted, Zamazenta is more defensive, while Zacian is more offensive, which is why Zamazenta is number two.
Zamazenta's best stats are, of course, his defense and special defense, which are an incredible 145 each. His physical attack and speed are also excellent, being 130 and 128 respectively. Its HP is a solid 92 and its special attack is a mediocre 80, but you wouldn't use special attacks against this Pokémon anyway. Like Eternatus, this is a legendary OP, so most competitive formats will ban it from the start. However, it will still be a lot of fun to use in your own game and especially in Max Raid Battles. That leaves number one, the strongest new Pokémon in Sword and Shield, Zacian Crowned Sword Form.
Zacian's defenses are substantially lower than Zamazenta's, being 115 instead of 145. His HP and special attack are the same, but in exchange for the drop in his defenses, his physical attack and speed are substantially higher. It has an incredible base speed of 148 and an absolutely incredible physical attack stat of 170. If you exclude Mega Evolutions and primary forms, the only Pokémon with higher physical attack stats are Kartana's attack form and Deoxys. They really seem to like the power dragging new legendaries every generation, but on the plus side, they are legendaries. For starters, they weren't going to impact the competitive scene.
So enjoy kicking it in your own game and in Max Raid Battles and stuff like that. That sums up the 20 strongest new Pokémon in Sword and Shield.
