The Belko Experiment (2016) KILL COUNT

May 31, 2021
Welcome to the death chamber where we

count

the victims of all our favorite horror movies. I'm James Agee, nice and today we're looking at Belko's

experiment

s from that YouTube poll I posted a few weeks ago. The Belko Experiment was written by James Gunn in 2007, but when production began in 2015, he was too busy with the MCU to direct himself, so Wolfcreek director Greg McLean took over and, for me , the resulting tone gap hurts a little, the script of the final product is full of darkness. humor, but McLean's direction takes the material too seriously and we end up with an uneven film that gives me tonal whiplash.

Naoko has been cheerfully described as an office space meets battle royale, a fair enough description since it has him and John C McKinley in it. It was one of Bob's in the office space the premise is simple in an office building in Columbia 80 American employees are told they have to start

Let's find out get to the murders. The film begins in the capital. In Colombia, where a single imposing building stands representing American capitalism in the form of Belko Industries, there seems to be some extra security today as the CEO or Berry Norris, played by Tony Goldwyn, watches the new-faced guards and these New faces are checking every corner and there are cracks in the vehicles driven by the American workforce and local employees are being sent back home. Well, three day weekend, the opening credits play over a montage of future victims and close-ups of office supplies that will sadly never be used as weapons.

There is also a large rack of monitors and a switchboard somewhere. place. Those are important. This movie has a really big cast and you're about to watch them all murder each other, so let's meet some faces before the

ing begins. New employee Danny. played by Melanie Diaz meets with Vince, the head of human resources, on her first day. She mentions that the day before they put the company's standard tracker on her head, an electronic tag meant to protect her and all other employees from kidnapping. A probable story. Danny made some friendly faces as Vince's assistant Rosia, as well as Roberto and Liotta, two other employees who became friends with her immediately, fun group, but I'd rather hang out here with Peggy played by Rusty Schwimmer, who was the owner of the abrasive restaurant and Jason is going to hell and Keith played by Josh Brener, the big head and with small ambitions, leAndria played by Adria hona is being weirded out by Wendell played by dr.

Everyone's favorite sarcastic. John C McKinley, she tries to tell him off using the office's weird backwards messaging system, but he has to resort to closing the blinds to get real privacy, you know, the kind of privacy that will allow him to make out with her boyfriend Mike Miller . played by John Gallagher Jr. All of these characters and many others have their day interrupted by a voice that sounds on the intercom. Most of you will be dead. Your chances of survival increase if you follow my orders. Your first task is to simply murder two of your coworkers in the next. half an hour yes, that's all, they say it doesn't matter how, but if two people don't die in 30 minutes there will be problems, the employees are not sure how to react, if it's a joke or if they should worry or But the phone lines are dead .
Cell reception is non-existent and it looks like they won't be getting out of there anytime soon because that building is quickly turning into a bunker, which is more than a little worrying to most of the employees gathered in the lobby. Barrie takes control and tells everyone to stay calm because it's probably just some kind of joke, bro. He ends the powwow with some excellent corporate buzzwords. I'm going to work on it and come back as soon as I can. That guy knows he's out of business. Mike asks the head of maintenance, played by Michael Rooker, if he can do something with those walls, but when he brings a blowtorch with Lonnie the Robin to his Batman, they discover that there is nothing that will pass through that closed metal and air.
The conditioning has been disabled, all combined with those terrifying new guards. He worries me that Barry is wrong to say it's just a joke, bro, who do you say we should pick a couple of people to kill? No, no, I understand, what's the joke that Mike Barry tells? Mike, he's probably getting a little antsy and everything will be fine. Keith Danny Liotta and Roberto go up to the roof and try to warn one of those new guards they see but this is none of their business so he ignores them there is another group on the roof rising but not too high from Panama man it's not so strong includes Marty played by James Gunn's little brother, Sean and Chet, who I would love to give me a big bear hug Marty tells the others they say this is all just a psychological test and they just want to see how they react The employees at all this look at me, look how fucking calm I am, they lose, man, but then the girl next to his head explodes, oh yeah, that's it.
It's not just a joke bro or a psychological test, this shit is real and the heads keep pop pop and down in the sweltering lobby with three other employees who get their heads blown off by mysterious means that people at first assumed were gunshots, but then they realize whose head exploded. huge, that's right, the explosions are coming from inside the Hat, yeah, they're those tags that everyone had installed on the back of their heads when they started working there, so that sucks Mike, he's thinking fast, he grabs a box cutter and He heads to the bathroom where he begins. cutting off his own head to get rid of baby Bob's brain, unfortunately for him, all the voice hairs took over, they give him a

down and he stops before he's done, shaving his head later, Vince and this guy , Terry, discovered that there are, in fact, cameras everywhere.
As Mike gets stitched up, Wendel ups his creep factor by telling Leandre how he records all the flirtatious glances in quotes, an email she sends him, fuck you, yeah, fuck you, window package in the lobby, Barry struts into conversation with the security guard, evident by James Earl. and he asks her for the keys to the armory so we can make sure the weapons there are safe. Wait, I'm sorry, this building has an armory that sucks when Evan refuses. Barry tries to assert his status, but Evan nominally quits his job in response. I'll keep those keys for now, thanks Barry, who's in the basement, is trying to fix the AC wall.
It's slowly getting lost, it'll be good for your little brain when the voice comes back over the speakers, it says they're going to get the results they want, whether employees play along or not, and set some ground rules, no more dismantling cameras and no more attempts to remove the explosives from the head, if you do any of those things you will get an acute case of brain. explodes, then the next directive there are currently 76 of you left in the building in two hours, thirty of you are not dead, we will start with 60 of your lives through our methods and we will leave with some people like Wendell and this big guy.
Antonio immediately begins to arm himself with everything they can find in the kitchen. Others like this Lady Agnes just want to find a place to hide. Lonnie is really freaking out now and when Bud tries to calm him down, he gets a reflex headlock, oh shit, Lonnie. Did you even want to do that? Because oh wow, yeah, that's a guy with a bashed skull. It's a truly memorable moment as Bud battles acute brain damage before sliding to the ground. Death. The death is all the more surprising given Rooker's acting pedigree. A somewhat accidental murder was Danny and when Lonnie sees her, he grabs her and starts hitting her with that key, she fights back and slams him against the wall, where there is an awkward pipe sticking out, one of which goes straight to the back. from his head, killing him.
Well, there are two, maybe 28 more people can die accidentally, everything will be fine in the cafeteria where most of the employees are. Barry says they have to consider all options at this point and different ideologies begin to form. Mike is very against even considering any option. murder and as if Tony Goldwyn talking about killing people wasn't scary enough, Vince lets it slip that the CEO is apparently an ex-Special Forces while everyone else goes off to make some rescue signals, some of the more utilitarian astables about how their families need them in Home, they bring the blowtorch to that after mentioning the armory to get the stash of weapons kept there like a neben.
They are against the plan and when Wendell threatens them because he is such a big and strong man, Evan pulls out his gun showing that tensions are rising. Mike convinces him not to kill anyone, but he also dismantles the blowtorch so there isn't a new set of weapons in the mix. It was a fucking stupid move. It seems like Leandre is okay with berating Mike a lot for pissing off those guys and also for not considering it. the realistic possibility that they need to kill some more. I get that this premise is a good way to explore how different people might approach a kill-or-be-killed situation like this, but there's still something extremely disheartening about how a Cervical in Turgut with her boyfriend apologized for the weirdness I think you're stupid, hey , fuck you, she finally calmed down, but again, it's Jardin who has serious character moments like this, followed by fun stuff like Marty and his crew deciding that the company must be drugging them through drinking water, she leaves to rust, especially considering the things that are about to happen, the tone just isn't mixed well, a large group of people climb to the roof and try to hang the rescue posters only to be met with gunshots from the armed guards on the ground and the voice that says that if they try again they will have some exploded heads to clean up in the stairwell on their way back.
Berry's team attacks Mike and demands the oven keys when he throws them away. down below Wendel stabs him with a knife because that guy is just a huge jerk as well as being a pervert tôchuken sounds like something a pervert would say they leave Evan bleeding alone on the stairs a real bummer since that guy seemed Great, Barry opens the box strong of the weapons and begins to hand some of the weapons to Wendel Antonio, this guy Bradley and Terry, who don't look so scary, corner the rest of the employees in the lobby, although when Bradley sees Danny hiding in the basement, La Leave it there, I guess it's one of those first-day privileges, like having your boss buy you lunch.
The other 72 employees all end up together in the lobby, where Barry begins sorting them into groups. He is placed to people with children under 18 years of age. in one group while everyone over 60 is placed in another, Terry begins to have doubts about the whole thing, but Barry is convinced that this is the way things should be, this is the right thing, this is the only option, yes, start. choosing the remaining victims seemingly at random, but he's no RNG, so I don't think this is entirely fair. Jonathan also recognizes the pseudo-randomness and starts making a fuss which leads Wendel to execute him on the spot. place dr.
Cox seemed too eager to start shooting there, maybe JD should buckle up and stop daydreaming for his own personal safety. Barry's quote-unquote random selection includes both Peggy and Mike, but luckily Danny is still hiding in the basement, so he's avoiding this. The whole situation is about to get really disturbing real quick. Harry has Antonio put on the radio and a Spanish version of California Dreamin starts playing and this is where the film's tonal fractures are most evident due to the stylistic music that runs through the scene. It feels like the filmmakers are trying to make it more interesting than disturbing, but rest assured, this shit is very disturbing and if you're sensitive you might not want to watch it because after one last encouragement from Wendell Berry, the scenes begin. executions at the end.
Note that the counting is going to get complicated here, so be patient and trust me. I spent a whole day going over this and I'm pretty sure I got it right. Barry starts shooting people in the back of the head to kill them while Wendell counts. In the body we see several of them happen on screen or off, but I'm also counting some gunshots we hear as Danny runs through the basement in terror. Mylogic is that these people are in line to die and Barry probably won't lose or waste balls, so during this initial execution scene I hear or see 10 people get shot and that's how many people count, meanwhile Mike tries convince Terry to let him go, but despite his whiny face, Terry rejects Mike's pleas. and prepares to move on, it is at that moment Danny activates the circuit breaker downstairs, turns off all the lights in the building and panic begins where everyone runs for their lives during this sequence.
Once again, I'm firing audible shots, which is less. realistic here, as every bullet fired is unlikely to result in a kill, but if you do this and count even the faintest gunshots heard in the background, the kill count lines up with what the voice says next time that controls our characters. So, with that in mind, during the sequence that is still composed by California Dreaming, which is awkward, 13 unnamed people die, that's the number it has to be. Also during the sequence, Danny escapes to the elevator with Roberto, where They climb the roof to reach the top. when Antonio comes down the stairs after Peggy, Mike jumps on his back and Peggy ends up stabbing him in the stomach with her own butcher knife killing him, that's one of the Wild Bunch eliminated and another falls when Bradley is distracted by the circuit breaker long enough to for Vince to sneak up on him. and take him down, Vince and a whole host of other employees, then stop and kick Bradley to death, getting very crunchy until Rosia begs everyone to stop, finally the song ends and so does the massacre that followed.
As you can, that's right, Terry, no need to count because the voice comes back and says there are twenty-nine people killed, one less than their quota and they only have two minutes left to kill another person before an additional 30 come out, so When Leandro jumps on Terry and begs for mercy with a paper cutter blade, you'd think it would be an obvious kill. After all, this guy was executing her coworkers a few months ago, but she can't bring herself to do it so Terry is saved until the voice rings out again to give him a record deal or I'm sorry to say that 31 additional employees will now be eliminated and the first to go is in fact Terry as a non-diegetic tchaikovsky begins to play.
Watch dozens of employees fall victim to soft, messy explosives going off in their heads again with classical music playing over it all. I'm not sure exactly what the filmmakers are going for, but I have a feeling it's more of a look at how Awesome and bold, the scene is more than I, this shit is fucked up, centum type and that bothers me given the very foundation of these people as human beings. The kills include second-tier characters like Leona and Peggy, whose deaths are really sad. as he shares one last look at Terror with Life, then it's finally over, well, sorry, now it's finally over.
Keith makes thirty-one for the head explosions and with the count I've been doing, we're all in order, there have been 64 employees. killed and only 16 left, the survivors blush with fear or, in the case of this guy, Tyson, who is chilling in the freezer like his eponymous chicken nuggets, when the voice returns to explain the last phase of his game , recites the current account that has buried Lede and Wendell in almost a second and the windows look at the shores in number, so he takes a knife to the two people he finds in the bathroom mark and Agnes, we see that Agnes died after a few other people, which is why his murders are number 65. and 69.
I'm just grouping them together here because it's easier for the head of HR graphics. Vince has one credited kill, so he reluctantly begins to add more, starting with his own secretary Rosia and continuing with his other anonymous employee who tries to flee. one shake Lorena tries her own survival method by exposing herself to Barry and telling him that she can have her if she doesn't kill her, a really sad point of desperation that is made even sadder by how much it doesn't work since Mary tells her that he. she can't waste a bullet and instead turn her head in a CG effect not much better than Freddy Vs.
Jason Barry enters the elevator that Danny and Roberto are in around the roof and when he hears them up there, he starts to open fire. Danny says this is my floor, thank you, well, Roberto faces the possibility of being crushed by the ceiling. He attempts to escape, but is instead crushed between the roof of the elevator and the ceiling of Wanda's floors, killing him and also stopping the elevator. On his way, he temporarily traffics Barry into the andr armed with the gun, now encountering Marty and Chet, who are removing the bombs from the heads of anyone who died with them intact.
Her plan is to put them against the wall and blow a hole to the outside. An unlikely plan, but at least it's something Leandro wants Mike to participate in, so she gets on the intercom and asks him to come meet her at the first floor. On her way to the cafeteria, she finds Wendell dragging Tyson out of his hiding place in the freezer. her hacking him to death to get one more kill under his belt, though maybe she was just taking out Tyson's meat to thaw for later use. The Landers are not interested in Wendell's frozen dinner, so she shoots him and knocks him to the ground.
She takes cover behind a table. with Chet and Marty, but unfortunately Wendell responds with his gun by shooting Chet in the head and when Leandre and Marty push the table towards him, Marty is sad to see both characters leave, but I'm glad they lasted as long as Chet's pens. Leandre. Wendell is down with the table and then stands over him with the fire ax while Wendell cries in disbelief, goes crazy on that guy's face cutting it into a bloody pulp on the floor and that's an end to our secondary antagonist which comes out with a really twisted fight.
With his head smashed on his way to the microphone on the first floor, he picks up the area staff, a lady named Lisl, and they meet Leandre in the lobby, where she shows him all the bombs she and Marty had collected. Mike keeps them for later use. Out of nowhere Vince appears with the Molotov cocktail throws it and splashes Lisl burning her to death and knocking the survivors down to the last five sorry the weasel at least survived the pervert - everyone laughs okay I'll just call you crushed in face, friend, that's better, Vince. He throws more cocktails and sends Mike and Leandre to the stairs while Barry approaches them with his gun, shoots them but they run away and when Vince goes to throw another cocktail, he takes a bullet in the chest, courtesy of a teammate.
Oh, Vince falls. another dead Belko employee takes that from HR. Meanwhile Danny has been being a complete badass in the elevator shaft, the monkey blocks his path across the chasm and he finally reaches the roof of another elevator. She's been such a player in this whole game that it's so fucking frustrating when the script makes her decide to jump into the elevator and take it senseless to the lobby. She doesn't make any sense and of course it results in Barry shooting her in the head when the doors open. Damn, that's the most annoying death in this movie.
Danny was a lot smarter and more careful tonight, it looks like Leandre ended up getting shot by Barry on the stairs, so she and Mike get to a quiet place where she can tell him she loves him and it's a real bummer for Mike, but an even bigger bummer for us, it's one of the last deaths in the movie and she just bleeds out like Linderman with Mike very angry at Barry for murdering his girlfriend. The final confrontation begins. Mike jumps up and starts punching Barry, who definitely has the advantage as he's trained in the Special Forces.
The wrestler in the fight eventually accidentally turns on a projector, giving the sequence the backdrop of a PowerPoint presentation. Somehow, lanky, random office worker Mike is able to get the better of the Special Forces-trained Barry, and he starts punching him in the face with a duct tape dispenser. The cover image. from the blu-ray is born when Mike lifts the tape dispenser above his head and lowers it onto Barry's skull over and over pulverizing his face and another really twisted broken head effect and killing him to finish Belko's experiment, I I mean the experiment. The films themselves are not over yet, the walls around the building fall down and armed guards enter to a score.
Mike leaves the office building, is taken to the hanger next door that looks like spanks spanks headquarters, and Mike finally meets the man. Behind the boy's scarred face, he says that they are part of an international organization that studies human behavior and that they have learned a lot from these experiments. They try to give Mike a little questionnaire, but he cuts that shit off by saying that he planted the explosives on the guards and the kids when they escorted him inside, runs over to the switchboard and starts flipping the switches whether he wants to or not, killing them. the two guards armed with the explosives, then grabs a rifle and opens fire on the interrogator and the cameraman when he tries. to flee killing a total of four in total, the voice is left pleading for his life on the ground and tries to appeal to Mike's belief that life is sacred, but time for that is up and Mike opens fire directly at the head of the voice discharging an excessive amount. of ammo inside him and giving us the final kill of the movie, bloody and messy beyond belief, Mike steps out and drops his gun to the ground, looking up at the sky, probably wondering what sounds good for dinner as the camera pans. zooms out and reveals that he's still being monitored along with a bunch of other people in similar situations and stage one begins stage two, oh wow that's definitely an ending that sets up a sequel even though this one has enough deaths for four or five movies alone, don't do it.
Don't believe me, let's get to the numbers on a new death count record that probably won't be broken anytime soon. 84 people died in Belko's experiment. 10 For my research, which took way too long, it looks like there were 35 women and 49 men, but that could be I don't know for sure, with the duration of 89 minutes equating to one death on average almost every minute. OMG I'm taking the gold chains off the best kill: Barry Norris, because it's a kill that actually uses a stationery aka what the whole movie should have had instead of just a bunch of gunshots and explosions heads, come on: all mache to kill the stupidest will actually be Danny because I'm angry at how unfair it was for his character.
Danny Was Better Than That's All, The Belko Experiment came out in

2016

- mixed reviews and box office numbers, so who knows if we'll ever get that sequel, speaking of sequels, although we're back to the leprechaun routine on Friday with the part 2 and until then I'm James Agee. Well, it was the death count. Thank you very much for watching today's death count. I won't thank a couple of clients like Tricia Glass Nova, chat Jourdan Shannon. My impression is that many of you really like this movie. more than me and that's totally fine.
