The Absurd History of Level 8-2

May 20, 2024
a bit silly, but the first setup for this actually required waiting 24 minutes, don't worry, although just a day later more setups were found that only involved a few seconds of waiting, you'd think at this point everyone would jump on this new one and great Double. Bullet Bill strategy, but surprisingly that never happened. All the settings seemed to make the early parts of the

level

a little harder and people had gotten comfortable with the three-frame jump setting in the meantime, so they just stuck with that. It's a cool strategy that people could use if they really wanted to up to this point.

Kriller has been quite successful in improving the success rate of Tas 8 2, but it's not really finished yet, so far we've only looked at attempts to try to improve. part two of the

level

and part three, but what about part one? Kriller was thinking once again about this level and why everything works, why every piece is necessary, we have to make a super precise Bullet Bill bug because there are no frames left to get the perfect 82 frame rule, we have to make a super precise jump past this plant because there are no spare frames in the frame rule and obviously we have to do this quickly and it sticks out at the beginning of the level because there are no spare frames in the frame. rule, it's not even a question, of course, we have to do the Excel fast, there are no frames to spare, of course, we have to do the Excel fast, wait, do we have to?

the absurd history of level 8 2...

It's a crazy idea that doesn't even make sense to consider or at least didn't make sense until kriller came out, if we combine all our knowledge of Super Mario Bros it might be possible to skip this quick Excel, as well as a quick summary by doing this Exact movement from a standstill makes Mario accelerate faster and generally allows him to move enough extra distance to save two frames, so if this saves two frames, we definitely need it to save the frame rule at 82, but that is the thing, it doesn't always save two frames, it kind of saves 1.8 frames which it can often allow.
the absurd history of level 8 2
You get somewhere in a level two frames early, like entering a pipe or stomping on an enemy, but sometimes the extra distance only gets you there one frame early, it just depends on exactly what part of the level is significant, e.g. it only allows you to reach the axe. in the final room of 84, one square earlier, the important point we need to reach in 82 is this terrain right here, the limiting factor to getting past this pipe is how soon you can land on this piece of terrain and start jumping past it. It turns out that the rapidly accelerating plant at the start of the level only allows you to land here one frame early.
the absurd history of level 8 2
It's very close to getting there two frames early, but it doesn't get everything right. Great thing, this quick Excel only saves one frame. zero frames to spare in the frame rule, obviously we still need it, but not as fast, that's where Kriller had a lightbulb moment once again, we have coin flip shenanigans in play, this piranha plant can only hurt Mario in every other frame even though we got here. A slower frame we can pass the plant, a faster frame moving through the frame can't hurt us. It turned out that all this time you didn't need Excel fast at all, you could skip it and still get passed the plant at the same speed killer not only improved the first part of the level, he eliminated it thanks to his efforts now the runners just needed to make the jump fast in the pipe and then use its much more direct jump towards the bullet pill, this is the current strategy to match the Tas in 82 just a few months after these innovations, nify obtained the first world record with the Tas 82 frame rule and 5 months later he managed to include a perfect 81, resulting in the legendary and long-awaited 454 yes, it's crazy how much this level changed in just one year: it went from being impossible to a really difficult strategy performed once in practice, to a fairly consistent strategy that was implemented in runs before other known time saves, including where we recap everything it took to get here.
We investigate an extremely rare plant that disappears, something that works because of the ghost bullet bills. These ghost bullet bills have to appear in the same box as each other and in the same box that the plant is trying to spawn in we look for millions of combinations to try to make This is a useful strategy and in the end the only person who uses it is in 334th place. The strategy requires waiting 40 seconds at the title screen. There's a 50% chance it won't even work after waiting all that time on the top tier you can't afford. to deal with all that, so we tried something else, this other very weird Double Bullet Bill strategy, turns out we're not happy with that solution, turns out you just need one particular jump to the bullet pill, turns out you don't even need to do that. do a quick excel at the start of the level, you can just jump through the piranha plant, it's all so ridiculous, all these things combined for what I consider the most

absurd

strategy in Super Mario Bros speedrunning, this is the Absurd.
Story of Level 82. It's surprising how often a simple solution isn't the first one found. People find a method that might be possible and work very hard to make it happen until it becomes real and then at some point a much simpler approach is discovered. I don't know why this happens, but it really keeps things interesting. It's always surprising and entertaining to see Brilliant Minds at work as they venture into uncharted territory, and fascinating to see what trinkets they bring back from their travels there. That is all for now. Thanks for watching and subscribe if you liked it.
