Apr 20, 2024
When it comes to premium SUVs, the

genesis

of Hyundai's

luxury

division was definitely late to the party, the company didn't even have an SUV in its portfolio until last year, when the larger GV80 finally went on sale now, Of course, earlier this year, the company followed suit. With a new smaller entry, the

gv70

, I actually tested this vehicle earlier this year, a fully charged twin turbo v6 in sport prestige version. I was impressed by the whole package that Genesis was now offering, as you can see this week on this cold snowy morning. Genesis has loaned me the most affordable version - this is a

2022

gv70

with the base 2.5 liter turbocharged engine offering up to 300 horsepower and the best thing about this car is about 12,000 less compared to the v6, so if you are looking for a more affordable.

Premium

luxury

crossover vehicle that is much cheaper than many of its European models. How does the new 2.5 turbo gb 70 compare? Stay tuned to find out now because the main difference with this vehicle versus the v6 is under the hood. I thought let's get started. Of course, with what's happening here now, many luxury buyers end up choosing the base four-cylinder engine. As an enthusiast I often want to tell you to buy the v6, however this engine here is a very good option and for those of you who want to save some money and not lose so much speed, you should definitely check it out now.

More Interesting Facts About,

the 2022 genesis gv70 2 5t is a superior bargain priced luxury suv...

This 2.5-liter turbocharged direct-injection gasoline four-cylinder is the same engine you'll find in vehicles like the Kia K5 GT, Kia Stinger, and Hyundai Sonata. The n-line of this vehicle makes 300 horsepower, so that's more power than all of those options, and 311 pound-feet of torque. Everything is powered through an 8-speed automatic transmission, and all gv70s, including the base engine, come standard with all-wheel drive. This is a rear wheel drive platform. You can see the engine is mounted longitudinally, but it only makes about 75 horsepower and about 80 uh 84 pound-feet of torque compared to the uh v6, so again it still offers plenty of grunt and the good stuff about it. that is, you get better gas miles on the v6, which is like 1825, it's rated at 22 28, so it's still not the best in its class.

Genesis will actually probably introduce an electrified version, they already announced an all-electric model that should have zero to 16 around four. The seconds and a half that have been announced for Korea have not yet been confirmed by the US, but this one here with the four cylinder weighs about 200 pounds less than the v6, weighs about 3900 pounds and you can still tow a maximum . of 3,500 pounds and you should do 0-60 in around the six-second mark, which we'll test when we take this vehicle out on the road, but when we close the hood here you can see that the styling of the GV70 continues.

It stands out incredibly, this particular one is a more subdued color, it's painted in Himalayan Gray and it's also the Advanced Package finish, it's one level below Sport Prestige, which I really love how Sport Prestige looks. , as some black details were added. Up front, as you can see with this model, here you have a lot of chrome detailing, which is a little bit more stylish, like other Genesis models, you have your huge crested grille on the front, here with of course that chrome that darkens the chrome look. I apologize, the vehicle is a little dirty, but we actually just got out of a snow storm here in the Pennsylvania area.
You can see that the hood has a very proud and bold Genesis logo with these really nice and interesting cut lines. It also has this really interesting thing. Detail of where the hood goes over the front bumper here, I expect most vehicles will have some sort of clip here on the front, uh, on the front, which actually matches the cut line on the hood, but not on this vehicle, it's definitely a unique styling element. it has its signature quad beam LED headlights, four quad beams, it has an LED daytime running light with these two individual lines, LED turns, as you can't see fog lights on the gv70, but you can see here it has some vents functional more chrome here on the lower front fascia, I imagine a front license plate would probably make this vehicle look a little awkward, so I really like that this one doesn't have a front license plate, so those of you who live in states They don't need it.
I really like the look of this vehicle now again, the overall length of around 186.9 inches long is on the longer end for the segment. It is about the same size as the new Acura rdx. Its wheelbase is around 113 inches long. This model here comes with 19. -inches, you can see that these wheels definitely have an interesting design, just like the 21 that I showed you on the sport prestige, they are mounted on two 35 55 with tires, this will definitely give you a quality of smoother ride if The guys prefer that so again you're going to want this if you want a smoother, smoother ride this vehicle has just over eight inches or just under eight inches of ground clearance so you won't necessarily want to take this one out. vehicle. road, but it gives you that higher seating position for those of you who wanted now a couple more details.
I'm noticing here, you can see there's a turn signal mirror here, a turn signal indicator on the mirror, they have cameras, four cameras around. On this vehicle for surround view cameras it has chrome along the window sills and then chrome on the roof rails and then the panoramic sunroof comes standard on this model, if they upgrade it to the select frame it will include that as well and then From the side profile here you can really see the beautiful, elegant lines of this vehicle. I especially love the way it looks from the rear, where those double line elements here also carry over to the rear with the taillights that you can see. there are no sequential LED taillights but you do get full LED taillights which is nice on the back here it says

genesis

and then your only indication that this is zone four is the fact that it doesn't say 3.5 on the back later here it just says all wheel drive and then you have a different looking exhaust system for the rear bumper and you have this unique looking rear bumper treatment as well as all the LEDs like I said before and then you can see here.
I wish Genesis had hidden the back. windshield wipers under the spoiler, that's always an element that I like, but you can see here, this is the third reverse brake or the third brake light. It has a really distinctive look here when the power tailgate opens. You press that little button. Here under the windshield wipers and like the V6 the cargo area is unchanged, you get about 29 cubic feet of space with the second row seats up. There is no third row in this vehicle. I wasn't expecting that, but you can see here that there's a little bit of storage under here and you have a temporary spare tire if you fold the back seats down, which you can do by just pulling this little handle here that expands it to about 58 cubic feet. of space so not the best in its class but very competitive and creates a nice flat load floor and this vehicle is still very very practical just know that the shape of the car limits the actual space in which you can put things that are at the highest end of this vehicle because it is type comes out at the end or at the bottom end of the shape of the cargo area, so now that we have talked about the exterior of the four-cylinder gv70, let's continue Go ahead, let's jump in and show you the inside first thing.
I want to show you the key to the vehicle. You can see that this is the current genesis key. It also offers its digital key where you can use your phone as a key, I think for Android devices, but this advanced version includes its smart parking feature. So if I press this lock button here, I start the vehicle, it has remote start from the remote, but if I press this button here and hold it, you have to be standing close to the vehicle, but you can see it allows you to move the control remote. vehicle back and forth to move it out of a spot, for example, if someone parked too close and can't access the vehicle, you can move it back and forth a couple of feet as long as it is standing inside a pit. distance from the vehicle, which is a really nifty feature, it's kind of a cool party trick that a lot of people will definitely show off to their friends and family now, when I approach the vehicle and open the door, I can see it open the door for me, my test vehicle, it has this beautiful interior color combination shade called burgundy velvet, it's almost like a purplish tone.
These seats are not as complete as the premium leather I showed you in the Sport Prestige. They don't offer a massage function, but they do. memory for two people and you can see here that they adjust in 14 different ways, they heat up and they cool down. I love the look of this interior, as you can see. It also has the two-spoke wheel that Genesis introduced in its other models. If you want a three-spoke wheel, you have to go for the sporty prestige because all the other models have that two-spoke wheel that is again coming back into fashion now with a little less than eight inches of ground clearance, the step in Height is really nice for the typical SUV.
Go up in height and you can see that the door panel is the same beautiful burgundy color. There is a unique molding here that actually lights up at night. This material is included in this particular molding. It's really cool how they gave us lighting on the door panels. Here, along with really nice materials, you can see metal buttons and metal speaker covers for the Lexicon stereo system. When I close the door, the door itself has a nice solid sound and you can see that the steering wheel tilts and telescopic. it goes with that memory setting now the button to start the engine is here where you would expect it to be.
You can see that my tester has the advanced version and gives up a couple of features compared to the Prestige Sport I tested a couple. Months ago, however, this interior is still best in class for me in terms of luxury and technology. Now the first thing I want to talk about is materials and you can see that the door panel here has a soft touch injection molded plastic and a prestige sport finish. It'll wrap you in real leather and stitching, so it's something you have to give up on the lower trims. You still have metal accent covers here or metal accent pieces for the door handles, the speaker covers and the window controls still have metal accents and feel really tall.
Quality, really excellent feel for them. Nice padded leather here, where the elbows are dressed. You can see that the ambient lighting is really beautiful on this vehicle. You can change the color, brightness and intensity of the lighting and you can see the steering wheel here. It takes a little getting used to the look of it, but it has nice leather, it also has really great nine paddle shifters and three grips on the steering wheel, power tilt and telescoping, and again, this is really comfortable to drive on trips longer ones where you can rest your hand here so I'm pretty good with that, the horn has a typical horn sound, it doesn't sound cheap or tinny which is great considering the price of this vehicle and the way the dashboard looks instruments.
See, it's not the all-digital 3D effect you get in the prestige sports car, but rather it's a half-digital display with a digital tachometer and an analogue speedometer. If I point correctly, you can see that the advanced package adds the blind vision camera system shown right there. The same digital side, depending on what you're pointing left or right, you also lose the head-up display which I think had augmented reality, so again, that's another feature you lose. The dashboard here is a soft-touch injection molded plastic instead of leather stitching, but you still have the huge 14 and a half inch screen here, which is a touchscreen, although it's a bit far for me, but it is a screen very responsive touch and I love that you can use it as a touch screen or just go back to the normal genesis gps you can see by going to your media there you can choose different sources there's the home screen and then I wanted to go to the map here you can see it's The Genesis GPS system is very similar to Hyundai's uses.
I was actually a little surprised that Genesis doesn't have a more beautiful map display, but this is not bad. This is something where I think European brands have an advantage over Genesis: the built-in GPS, but mostof people will ignore it. which are going to go to Apple Carplay anyway, just open Waze and all that, so that's something to keep in mind. This system here is really good to use. The only criticism I have is the fact that it does not include wireless connection. carplay, it would have been nice for them to include wireless carplay, not sure why hyundai and kia aren't doing that on their high end systems.
Here you can see there's leather stitching in this area, more metal trim, there's a really beautiful graphic here for the climate control where you have dual zone climate control, you have heated and ventilated seats, you have really cool touch sensitive buttons which work well and have haptic feedback and then you have traditional metal buttons here, when I put the vehicle in reverse, you can see there is their 360 top down camera, which also offers a reverse cross traffic alert, you can also put a view here where you can literally look, do a 360 perimeter scan of what's around the vehicle, which is a really great feature that you can also adjust the settings and all that, again, the technology in this vehicle is on point.
Par with all their competitors, I just want them to add wireless carplay and Android auto, it's still over a wired connection which is a bit annoying. Your drive mode selector is here. You can see there are five different modes: snow, eco comfort, normal or comfort, sport and custom, so we're going to show the guys the different driving modes so that as we go through the test drive, you can see that it really changes the appearance of the course.Depending on your driving mode, I drove this car mainly in comfort because it is supposed to be a luxury SUV.
This big center knob here controls the infotainment system or you can use the touchscreen. In fact, I think the gear selector location is too close. I imagine if you own this car you'll get used to it, but there have been times where I've grabbed it thinking it's the transmission selector when it's actually here, which is also illuminated, it's a nice glass control that you click on. all the time. left to reverse right to park are to drive then press p to park and then you can access the paddle shifters on the steering wheel the steering wheel as I said before is heated it has really nice controls that feel like A small step above what you find in Hyundai and Kia.
Same interesting finish here that lights up at night and looks great with this burgundy velvet interior. You can see that the center console is quite deep and has pretty good storage. You have two USBs. a charging port there a wireless phone charging pad over here cup holders over here and then you can see the seats offer that feature where you can move the passenger seat back and forth and adjust the recline because they give you extra buttons here this It's a nice feature, the seats are also very comfortable and supportive, not as soft as the leather found in the Sport Prestige, but that's something I'm willing to give up on this lower trim.
You can see that there is full LED lighting in this cabin. You have this big panoramic roof that you can see. The glass is very dark tinted. I have it open right now. The sun is going down but I don't even feel the sun hitting me, which is nice, but there is a retractable sunshade. you guys want to completely close this which is a really cool feature or you can also open the sunroof which is great. Many competitors are eliminating the ability to open the sunroof on certain models; when you open the glove box, you can see that it is a very large, cushioned, felt-lined container style, but overall the interior has most of the luxury and technology. of the v6 um, a couple of things you give up, but there's plenty of space, great visibility, Genesis driver assistance technology basically comes standard on the top model. equipment, you can get things like highway driving assist two, this one doesn't have the older system, I think it does, but it works very well and you can see on the big screen good visibility, comfortable seats, this is one of the most beautiful cabins that exist.
Now you will find in the segment that the gv70 is strictly a two row vehicle and when you look at the back seat you will find a pretty good amount of space back here. It's not the largest in the segment, but it's not the smallest either. The smallest is perfectly right in the middle. Now you can see that the door opens wide enough so you can put a car seat in here if necessary and Genesis says there's about 37 inches of legroom back here, which is good, these seats are here too. They recline they offer a recline feature so if you pull this little lever here you can fold the seat down or you can also push the seat back the leather itself feels pretty good too it's the same leather you find on the front seats once you sit here I can adjust the recline a little better versus with one hand you can see here this is reclined a little more versus this side also has an armrest that folds down here which is nice and once I close the door, the door it's got the same solid sound, there's also manual sunshades on the rear windows back here which is nice, same soft touch materials, same thing down here, this also lights up at night which is cool, and then, In terms of features, you have two storage pockets here on the front. seats, it has air vents in the rear seats, a large area right here where this is missing, I guess there are rear climate controls that you can get on the higher end models I think, but there is a USB charging port, two of them actually two USB A and then a standard 115.
Power line, which is really nice, but overall I'm five foot seven, there's plenty of room here to be comfortable, there's a hump here that intrudes into the passenger seat of the medium and can be seen with the panoramic roof that lets in a lot of light. which is good, but overall the back seat is very usable and I think it offers the same amount of space as most of its competitors, so a few months ago I drove the genesis gv70 with the 3.5 twin turbo v6 engine and proclaimed it to be One of the best compact and midsize luxury SUVs you can buy.
I have driven all the competitors. The new nx. The updated rdx. The updated x3. It offers it at a price that really undercuts the competition now that we are on the four cylinder model, this is about 12 grand cheaper than the V6. This will be interesting because I'm really curious to see what it's like to drive this car. with the base engine because this is probably what most people end up buying, the base engine now with 300 horsepower from its 2-5 turbo, has more horsepower than most competitors, even more than the new lexus nx with its 2.4 turbo and Right off the bat, I notice that the engine responds much better than the new nx, very on par with that of the current generation of the acura rdx, which again has less horsepower than This vehicle and we have a very smooth 8 speed automatic transmission, but I got 0-60 in just under five seconds with the V6, let's go ahead and try the four cylinder and see what we can get.
I turned off the traction control, this car comes with launch control with the 8 speed automatic transmission which is unexpected. revs built the two big ones really nice response smooth shifts really decent noise also wow zero to 60 in 5.69 seconds, that's about a second slower than the four, which then the v6, which I think it did in about 4, 8 4.7 seconds, that's super impressive considering this is the base engine makes it faster than many of its European competitors, so bravo genesis, this is a fantastic powertrain. I love this engine in the final line of santa cruz and sonata, the kia k5 gt, the sorrento, it also makes a good noise. it's also synthesized, it's not a real noise, there's no exhaust noise coming out of the back, it's just amplifying the noise from the speakers, but let's go ahead and try another 0-60 acceleration because I want to see if I can get something similar in launch control. and grip on all four wheels, there is no lag, there is no slippage and I got 5.97 seconds there.
Wow, I mean it's a little slower, but yeah, you could easily do a 5. eight second zero to sixty and a sub six second zero to sixty sprint in the base engine. This car starts at forty-one grand, that's crazy money, so could you spend the extra 12 grand to get the v6? You know? I do not think that it's necessary. The v6 is good, it obviously gives you extra speed. You're looking for that and it also has that deep V6 growl, but this four-cylinder has a lot of power and I think a lot of people will be quite surprised.
When driving the four-cylinder, it feels much quicker than the new one. Lexus nx is pretty much on par with many of its European competitors, but I think it's smoother feeling than the dual clutch in the Audi, for example, and I prefer this to a low engine, which makes it absolutely the macan you have to use with the V6. So you know the performance of Porsche, but shocking, very shocking, I was not expecting the four cylinder as much as I was expecting now in terms of normal driving, the visibility outside this vehicle is good, the seats are also very comfortable.
I took this vehicle out on a long three and a half hour road trip to go pick up the maki we literally bought over Thanksgiving weekend and this was comfortable, we were driving through a snow storm, the technology of driver assistance, driver assistance technology works. very good and it feels really spacious, this vehicle feels like a classy luxury car that will also have some fun because of that rear four wheel drive, you felt like you can feel the power coming out of the rear a little bit. more and pushes the rear and it's a lot of fun, I mean it's a rear wheel drive platform, this doesn't share anything with the genre or the hyundai tucson, the new tucson or the kia sportage, a completely different vehicle for this one vs. this one, so you have to give Genesis supports this for me, it seems to drive like a modern Lexus.
I expect a Lexus to drive like this so it feels like that inside, but sadly Lexus doesn't feel like that, even the new nx is a big improvement, but it doesn't. It feels so good and so complete and it's just premium like this car and that's the beauty of Genesis. I'm starting to see more and more of them on the road because Genesis is starting to control their dealer network or their inventory. a little pushed more but gosh I mean eight speed is a really good super smooth genesis design transmission very quick shifts from a torque converter automatic um the driver assist like I mentioned works great I miss the massage seat and the ergonomic movement seat that you get in the sport prestige package, I mean, compared to the sport prestige package that you can get in this four-cylinder for another big four, you're missing things like the head-up display, you're missing the instrument cluster completely digital with the 3D Effect, you are missing the extra leather stitching on the dashboard, that this interior still feels good and the fact that you can use these cool colors like this burgundy velvet is amazing and the steering wheel here you guys have definitely questioned it and hated.
This two-spoke wheel is definitely making a comeback in the industry right now and as much as I want to hate it, it's really comfortable on long rides. I can just rest my hand here and it's very comfortable to drive. The wheel has heated seats. they have heating and ventilation, um, and the leather is not as luxurious as what you get on the sport prestige model, but it still feels great, the interior lighting here is also top notch, it's really fantastic here for the fact that what genesis I sweat the details and if you feel like every time you get behind the wheel of this car you're not giving up much for the four cylinder model and it starts at 41,000 and I want to talk briefly about the fuel economy because this car is rated to get 22 In the city 28 on the highway during my week of city testing I was averaging around 22 mpg on the highway, the best I could muster was 26.
That's 2 mpg below the EPA. I was disappointed in the Number there, I think Genesis needs to work on fuel economy but I will say it is very cold 30-38 degrees or so outside during my weeks of testing and I don't necessarily drive the most economical and we were driving through of a snow storm. but it's just you know Genesis obviously has electrification on the way, they actually already announced a fully electric version of the gv70 that's supposed to be zero to sixteen like four and a half seconds, it's going to be the fastest, that hasn't been confirmed. for us, but he'll probably come here.
II'd like to see them make a plug-in hybrid model as well for those of you who want to know that gas and electric don't want to make the complete switch, but for the ultimate gas-powered compact luxury crossover, this is definitely one of my favorites and this one costs 15 grand less than the v6 I tested a couple of months ago so if you have about 50k to spend and you're in In the market for a new compact to midsize premium luxury SUV in this segment there are so many options, so many new options which of course will hit the market this year and early next year, and after spending some time driving both models of the gv70 and driving many of the competitors, i have to admit that the genesis is still one of my top choices, yes, It is not the sportiest offering, it is not the most spacious offering, but it is extremely complete because it has one of the most luxurious interiors that exist.
It's packed with technology, has a powertrain that, whether four-cylinder or V6, offers plenty of grunt for most luxury buyers in the segment along with a smooth transmission, comes standard with all-wheel drive, and has a design that seriously stands out. This car, even with this rather subdued Himalayan Gray paint, still attracted a lot of attention wherever it went and once Genesis launches a high-performance version, an all-electric version, an electrified version, it will only continue its assault on the premium range, very competitive and very busy. Compact to midsize luxury space and the great thing about this car is that once you get your hands on it, they are arriving at Genesis dealerships as we speak.
This vehicle starts at 41,000, which is a whopping 12 grand less compared to the twin-turbo V6. This particular one here with the advanced package adds things like the roof panel, 19-inch wheels, blind-view camera system, upgraded stereo system, heated and ventilated seats and stuff like that for an extra eight grand with destined for my fitting room here. fifty thousand six fifty fifty thousand dollars for a car that literally looks like seventy thousand dollars is just shocking to me and it's about fifteen thousand less compared to the sport prestige v6 now if you guys want the sport prestige package, which I would probably consider buying, va Add about four thousand dollars to this vehicle, so you'll still get around fifty-four thousand dollars, which is a

bargain

if you're trying to build something like a BMW X3 or a Mercedes-Benz GLC or a Porsche Macan.
It'll cost you 10 to 12 thousand dollars more than this car and that's where I'm wondering, I'm scratching my head, why would you want to pay that? I mean yes the other vehicles have more prestigious badges.but the fact that this vehicle is the genesis and a lot of people don't recognize what it is and when they see the design they see the value, they see the way it drives, they feel the way it drives, it's definitely one of my favorite new luxury crossovers in the segment and I'm really excited to see what Genesis has up its sleeve for the next wave of new products because they've really been on an assault in this segment and I'm really surprised at what this company is putting out there, but with all that being said, I hope you enjoyed my full overview of the
