TAKE TWO: GLASS ETCHING WITH CRICUT JOY!!

May 29, 2021
Hey guys, Marilyn here, so today I wanted to do a shot two on etched

glass

with the Cricut Joy. Now I'm not really sure what happened in the last video, while I lost the sound, because when I recorded the video it was perfectly fine. somewhere in the upload it lost its volume, somewhere in the transition, buffering, wherever, because when I played the video (which I usually play my videos before uploading them), the volume was perfectly fine, so I I apologize for that and for those of you. They were very kind. Thank you very much for your kind words and patience.

I'm going to try this again. I'm recording this on my Samsung Note 10 Plus. I've never had a problem shooting video on my samsungs but we're going to do a

take

two so let's go ahead and shoot

glass

with the

cricut

joy now if you can do it on the

cricut

joy you can do it on explorer you can do it on explorer air the air too and the cricut machine if you have a silhouette machine you can also do it on a silhouette and any die cutting machine that you have so the first thing you want to have is your armor embossing solution so this is what eats. the glass and permanently etch the glass once you have created your decal so this is the solution we will put on the decal to get your image permanently etched into the glass.

More Interesting Facts About,

take two glass etching with cricut joy...

The next thing you want to have is what you want. To have a foam brush, you want to have some masking tape to mask your design so that it's securely secured on the glass, but it also covers most of the glass and you don't get any

etching

solution anywhere on the glass, um, another thing. your glass, of course, you should also make sure it has some alcohol in it. isopropyl alcohol. Isopropyl alcohol is an essential item that I always keep in my craft room. I also sometimes use isopropyl alcohol to clean, if I'm cleaning my desks or if I've been working with rhinestones, glitter rhinestones or paper crafts and I get adhesive on my mats, I just put isopropyl alcohol on the cotton ball and rub off the adhesive, you'll also want to rub your mug down to where you're going to apply your decal because you want to make sure you don't have fingerprints or anything on the glass so you want to make sure it's nice and clean the alcohol has dissipated from the glass so you can then go ahead and apply your decal and your embossing solution so of course your little cutting mat for your qriket joy and then you also want to make sure you have good vinyl so I'm using cricut permanent premium vinyl.

You can also use fdc vinyl and the old cricut. Vinyl, you don't want to use it because it's not the same quality as this. Also, I found that old vinyl cuts poorly on the mats of any machine, so they have definitely improved with their premium vinyl. and I love it, so let's go ahead and use a part of this, so let's go ahead and start the tutorial. I'm logged in on my iPad and don't use it much for designing. Normally I use my laptop, but since I don't have Windows 8 on my laptop yet, I'm going to go ahead and use my ipad, so the first thing you want to do is go ahead and go into your canvas and if you have multiple machines, like I, we make sure that your machine selection is selected to enjoy, okay, so we're going to go ahead and load our design from the library and we've got it there, okay, so now we want to go ahead and remove any of the negatives . space, so let's go ahead and click delete.

I'm going to tap on that and this is what my image looks like there, so I'm going to press next, okay and then you have these options down here where it says d speck. or soft, I'm going to go ahead and press lightly, just smooth, this softens everything, touch soft, have I done that yet? I think I did it or here we go, okay, so we're going to press next and we want to use the cropped image. so this is the one we want to insert, so we're going to hit save. Oops, we have to name it.
This is my sewing heartbeat. I've been sewing a lot, mainly masks, but I moved on luckily, I decided you know. what I'm going to do after I made over 150 masks and then I made this cute little bag, but this is going to be in another video, so let's go ahead and press my image to upload, insert down here, fabulous now. that's pretty big, my glass is really small, so we're going to go ahead and press edit and we want to change the width and I think you know what I did two and a half, what happened there, it skewed my image, come on. undo undo that undo that uh let's make it small here oh why is it unlocked?
I accidentally touched it somewhere. We want to make sure it's locked down so your image doesn't get skewed like that. Actually, you know, I did a test cut, this was a two and two inch size, but then when I put it up against my cup, it looks pretty small, so I went to, I tried it on and I did two and a half, but it's still too small so we're going to go to three inches wide and it's blocked out perfectly, but we'll make it larger for tutorial purposes so you can see what I'm doing here so to create your glass

etching

decal you need to place a box behind. here because what we're going to remove from the box is this actual image, we're going to remove this and that's what's going to transfer to the glass, so let's go ahead and insert a shape we want to insert a square, okay? then in the square let's minimize what we want to go ahead and unlock it and place it right behind our image so now what we want to do is move it back oh arrange sending back so now we want this box to be a little bit longer and then right there to have enough room behind the corners of my image to tape, so now what we're going to do is go ahead and highlight both of them. of the pieces, okay, everything is highlighted, so now we want to go ahead and attach it, um, it's that action, we're going to press attach and what we're going to delete is the heartbeat of the sewing machine, so Let's go Go ahead and press "Do It" let's go to the mat.
I have my little six inch mat ready to go. The mirror is off. You don't want to reflect your image when you are etching on glass. You just want to do that as iron-ons, so we're going to press continue, okay, oh, let me cut my vinyl piece and then we're going to use premium vinyl, okay, and let me cut this, okay, I'm going to put it on. my mat here, I know I didn't cut it completely perfect, but it doesn't have to be perfect as long as it's within my cut lines, so let's go ahead and load it up now to check if the mat is aligned, which it looks like which is, so now we want to press Go and we're going to crop the image, isn't it so cute?
It looks like he's coming towards us with those scissors. Although, by the way, I love Alexander Henry fabric. Alright. What has become my recent obsession is his fabric and he has amazing fabric okay so this is not a very detailed or large image so it looks like it's done so we'll go ahead and hit download and then let's go to get this off our mat, okay, we'll get it out of the way. Well, as you can see, let me put it up close. Here you may or may not see that there is an image there that is not very close. here, but let's go ahead and I'm going to do it.
I don't like to waste anything, but I'm going to say the right side of that and then we're going to clean up around the box, we don't want to

take

that box. which looks like a weeding box we don't want to remove that box which is the actual decal so let's go ahead here and we're actually going to remove the design so this is the part we're weeding out there's my sewing machine and there they are my heartbeat so now this is our glass etching decal okay so I'm going to choose this with my favorite contact paper which I find contact paper to be the easiest as I have some scraps in a small jar here, so we're going to go ahead and cut this to about half a size and you can get contact paper at Joann Fabrics.
I think it's normally 9.99, but you can get it for less than that, so let's go ahead and remove the The contact paper is like a transfer sheet, so I only want to remove the backing if I can see it perfect, so Let's see if we can get a little closer. Sorry guys, I should have left the camera where it was. Now we just want to go ahead and apply this to the decal. Be careful not to damage the decal when you are polishing it. So now the easiest way I find to remove the decal is to flip it over and then remove it. back, pulling it up from the top sometimes doesn't lift it right away, but the contact paper, if you flip it over and then do it that way, you're done, so I'm going to grab my handy paper towel fancy and then my rubbing alcohol and I'm going to clean my glass real quick, let's see I'm right handed so I don't need to clean the inside but sometimes I do it right so I'm right handed so I want my image to be on the outside so I can blur out now so you can see what I'm doing here, so we're going to clean this up real good with isopropyl alcohol and let it dissipate really quickly, so you'll just want to watch.
That's going to go perfect, so sometimes I like to use my masking tape to use it as a lever to hold my glass down so I can go ahead and apply my decal. Sometimes I leave it flat here and then I crouch down. in front of my table and then just look that way, which I think I'm going to do, so you might not even see me doing that, but you'll see the sticker light up, very cute, so okay, so I have it sitting. on the glass, so I'm going to go ahead and polish from the center and then I'm going to go outwards.
I recently engraved some wine glasses for the Bernina girls and they were a little difficult to place just because the glass was a little rounder, this glass is kind of flat so with the wine glasses they had more curvature on the side so which were a little challenging, so with the curves you want to cut the vinyl without getting close to the decal and then apply it. The vinyl now, which I also like to do besides polishing it on the cup, looks crooked but it's not, it's just the curvature there. What I also like to do is put a little bit of heat on the glass as well just to kind of activate the adhesive behind the decal, so I'm going to go ahead and apply a little bit of heat that will activate the adhesive a little bit on the side. post okay so that's enough heat so now I'm going to let that cool a little bit and then I'm going to polish it again because I want to make sure that there are no bubbles in the heartbeat or anywhere around the image because If it has bubbles, the etching solution can go under those bubbles and it will disappear. beyond your image you don't want that to happen, so I'm going to go ahead and polish it up a little bit more right on the edges of where I'm here, okay, I think that's pretty good there, so I'm going to go ahead and take off the contact paper and you'll see it's nice there, no bubbles at all, the only bubble I see is down here, but it's nowhere near my image there, you see it okay, so now let's go. go ahead and cover this all up and I also like to fold my tape when I'm doing this and you want to make sure you don't cover your image, but you want to get as close to the edge of your design as possible, so I'm going to go ahead and take this off completely.
I'll do it off camera so I don't waste too much time and then we'll come back okay, so my glass will be completely sealed. as you can see, I've got a good amount of tape all over the place, so let's put it here and then real quick if you have an etching solution that you've been using for quite a while. stuff this is the big bottle it lasts a long time I like to open it over my trash can because the particles that dry around the lid fall everywhere so you know what I didn't shake it I like to shake my etching solution before I open it , okay, it's fabulous and you want to make sure all your devices are away from your engraving solution, as you can see on my iPad a long time ago, I have a little bit of engraving solution in there, luckily it wasn't on. the screen, but you want to keep your cell phone, your devices, your laptops, your ipads and tablets and all that good stuff away from the etching solution, so what I like to do instead of just rubbing it, I like to dip my brush here and then I like to just put the solution right on top of the design like this, if you just put it right on top of there, you have a nice thick layer.
A lot of people always say yours looks great, but every time I do my uh, the engraving doesn't last very long, but you don't want to brush it, you want to have it on top of the image like this, nice and thick, sometimes, in the weather cold, you'll get these little ones too. You see that little piece looks like a piece of ice. You want to remove them from your images because they will leave little ghost dots on top of your image. You don't want to have that. Sorry, I'm probably completely out of the frame, but you get this,so just place the solution on top of your image and make sure you get all the corners.
I know my camera isn't focusing that well. I'm sure that will be the next comment you make. not focused, I know some people are very nice with their comments and some people are just rude about it, you know, so my daughter was like mom, why are you so angry? and I thought, you know, people could be nice with things, you know, I know the volume wasn't the best, I know, and I'm sure if anyone watches the video, look at other people's comments to know that someone I already commented that the volume wasn't very good on the first video, but you know, things happen.
I'm not perfect and here's take two, so let's move on and let this settle and heal. I'm not going to videotape that. I will return once it is completely finished. I like to rinse my brushes right away with cold water and when I'm actually rinsing this, it's going to stay on for about 20 to 30 minutes, as you can see the entire image is covered with etching solution and there's just a nice thick layer on top of it again. If you see any of those little ones, those little ones, they look like little pieces of ice, you want to make sure that you remove them because they will create little spots on your finished image and you don't want it to not be pretty, so I'm going to go ahead and rinse this off with cold water.
Oh, what I was saying is when I rinse this I leave the tape there, make sure you leave it. Put the tape on when you're rinsing off the rest of the solution because in case some of the solution gets on the side of the glass, you don't want it to etch in there, so you leave the tape on and I like to take it off. I rinse everything and rub the etching solution with cold water on my brain somehow I think if it's hot water it's still activating the solution, that's just my brain, it's not what it says in the instructions but that's how it works my brain.
And then, I like to rinse everything with cold water and then once I've removed all the etching solution, I start removing the tape underneath and the water keeps running until I'm done completely removing the decal and the tape and the solution. um that's when I stopped running the water and then I dry it with a paper towel so I'm going to go ahead and pause this video and then we'll come back in about 20 to 30 minutes and then I'll do it. Rinse this off and then I'll show you what the final product looks like. Okay guys, it's been about 10 minutes and as you can see it's starting to dry out a little bit so I'm going to go ahead and leave this.
I'll be here for a while, but you know what I'm actually going to catch that part that's slowly rolling down because I don't want that to interfere with my glass, so let me grab another brush to make sure none. of that is sliding anywhere and it looks like it might have a little crystal right there on the tip of my sponge, so I'm going to dip in there and it doesn't look like it, so now we're pretty good to Come on, let's go ahead and Let this sit a little longer and then I'll be back with an update.
Okay guys, towards the end, what I like to do after it's been sitting for a while, I like to brush it. around my image now that it's been there for a while, I like to brush it, but most of the etching is going to come from all that stuff that's there, so I'm just going to brush it for a while. A couple of seconds here and I think this is almost done etching as you can see it looks like the etching solution seems a little dry so let's go ahead and I'm going to pause this and I'm going to go ahead and rinse it off and I'll be right back guys so I rinsed everything and removed all the tape so let's take a look and see what it looks like.
Oh, it looks good, make sure if you use it. paper towels to rest your brushes on, don't use that paper towel to clean the glass, get a new paper towel, these glasses are actually from ikea when ikea was open okay so here is the finished picture let me get this off my tripod real quick and there's my stitching image, how pretty, you can see it has a very prominent color on the top, you'll see a little mark there, that's the adhesive I was talking about on my masking tape, so I'm going to put some alcohol on my paper towel and drink some of this.
Sorry, you can see the mess of fabric I was working with, so yeah, there it is and I hope the volume of this video was enough for most of you. thanks for looking and again if you can do this on your qriket joy you can do this on your explorer and you can also make glass etching decals with your explorer air 2 and your maker and any die cutting machine you have so thanks for looking and I'll see you in the next video
