Shrinking Tint Film on Back Window Basics

Jun 05, 2021
Hey guys, Kevin Rogers with Spot Pro Styles in Gainesville, Georgia, today we're going to talk a little bit about the

basics

of

shrinking

, what to do, what not to do, what to keep in mind, how dye actually shrinks. Brush up on some basic skills that should get you started by at least knowing what's going on with the

film

and what to look for before you start trying to narrow down the

window

s; It will be one of the most difficult tasks you will try to learn. so I'm going to try to cover it in detail starting with the

basics

, so the first thing I'm going to do is spray this with a little bit of soap and water, wipe it off with a rag, I'm going to put some white tape on it.

I'll talk about that in a minute, so I have the glass really dry. The next thing I'm going to install or put on is like a white striped tape, but it's a cut line tape, it's called glass 8, available at Tint Depot.com, something you can cut. and it also makes it easy to see the edge of the

window

through the darker

tint

, so we have our white tape on. I am going to mainly discuss a dry shrink method, which will be the most preferred method of

shrinking

. a wet shrink, we'll go over that in future videos, but for this video I basically want to cover the basics, so the next thing I'm going to do is a bounce dryer sheet, spray it very lightly and then wet the bounce dryer sheet. just enough and then tap out the excess the more there is in there the longer it will take to dry and then like a rag rub it from top to bottom and all the way to the sides it will be a dry shrink but it acts like a tack. agent, okay, we've given it enough time to dry, you want a

film

to form, obviously, no wet spots, you don't want the dye to stick prematurely, the dryer sheet is actually to help it set adhere to glass after it has shrunk.

More Interesting Facts About,

shrinking tint film on back window basics...

That's right, but it's still going to be free floating, so we're going to put the film on the car to cut the

tint

to size and obviously roll it from side to side. The first thing I want to cover now is which way the film shrinks the tint will only shrink from factory edge to factory edge it will not shrink towards the side tint actually as it shrinks it actually shrinks sideways to side as it shrinks downward, pulling it inward and creating a curve as it reaches. near the edge around here you don't have to pull

back

and forth, you just pull in one direction and pinch the film, so always remember to never shrink this way or that way, it's just the pulling side and it doesn't matter the roll size, factory edge only. to the factory edge, so now that we have the film centered, we overlap on both sides, we're going to trim this to the right size and we're going to stick it in, okay, take your olfa knife to take off a new blade using the snapper, take it out a couple of three and then find the top of the edge of the glass and then this is where the cut line is, so you're going to keep the blade as close to the glass as possible that you can afford a little more hangover and put Press lightly, press very , very slightly down the sheet and cut out the large size where the cutting tape is again.

Use light pressure. Tilt this blade up like this and apply strong pressure on it. You will cut glass that you can tear off as you go. You know, when making each pass, the key is to leave excess so it shrinks too much, so now we're trimming. The next thing we need to do is fix it down so that most of the windows are fixed in the middle, so divide the top down about half way. start in the middle of the glass lift the film very slightly pull towards you apply pressure make sure it's a good grip line get the sides you want to push up on the top down side that locks in its size so it doesn't shrink from this way it has to shrink up and down or don't get confused from factory edge to factory edge, there will be cases where you can twist the film on some windows and that means it is shrinking in a different direction, so please be aware Take into account factory edge to factory edge, which is why these are all called finger tunnels, all the extra film built up that needs to be shrunk to mold it into the glass, so you want it to look like that center line, with the sides up and down, fingers grip your heat gun make sure it's hot highest setting preferred hard card I use the mac tac hard card um also this is a dye tank top carbon um 15 I almost always use the top carbon se it shrinks really well and it looks fantastic so we're about to look at how well it shrinks so the first thing we want to do is look for the peaks or the finger peaks or the tunnels so the tunnels are like a V , they reach a point, they reach a point, they reach a point, then what you are going to shrink is the top of the beak, start slowly when you are shrinking don't go too fast, go too fast, you will miss points and you will end up with wrinkles or bubbles.
shrinking tint film on back window basics
On the inside you need to reduce all of this to the bottom, but stay focused on the peaks. I like to reduce evenly although it's not completely necessary, but I like to reduce here, cross here, cross here and almost all the way to the middle to the end. down and do it in four quadrants, so I'm going to focus on this side, then I'll go up here and do this corner. I'll go to that side. I'll do the bottom corner. I'll go up to this side. I'll do the top. corner so let's get started so I move my finger in a long position like this to arrange my spikes so I create a spike twist on my heat gun and you're looking for a movement like a wrinkle but don't go too far. when you see a little wrinkle use your card and push it out, you will get faster the more you do it so don't worry about the speed, there is the wrinkle which means it is shrunken.
I see lines going in this direction once you look at these lines you have to push them down to create your spikes again move there are those lines push them here there is a line coming this way and a spike here so I'm going to shrink here, I'm using my distance to create more heat or colder air, so when it stabilizes like this, push your hard card through it or your finger through it to create spikes, focus on the spikes, remember to keep the Sides pushed down, so I'm going to come

back

here because it's kind. coming this way I'm going to create a peak I'm going to shrink believe me a peak shrink believe me a pink remember your heat gun is hot so watch your fingers go slow keep your fingers running down now at this point don't go too far away when you're starting out, push all that clutter down, keep it organized, push it to the side and then hit your cards so what you're doing with your hard card is you can hit the top. of these don't put too much pressure on them, you will wrinkle them, but you can also hit the top of these to create spikes and that's how you start to get a little faster.
Yours shrinks. The force of the bomb shrinks. The bomb shrinks. pump but now concentrate this is the hardest thing for most tenors to learn concentrate on seeing those side lines and to stop push the heat away push them down the same thing i use this makes it a little easier when i started using my fingers this way and then shrink a little bit look how far I'm pushing those lines down let's go here even up look this is a bunch right here so I'm going to break it in two shrink it a little bit there push that down now I'm further down here , so I'll continue back here.
Another thing I'm doing is it wants to bunch up in this corner, so I'm pushing that film creating a little more pocket here, but I'm breaking down. I keep my thumb pushed against the side and break my finger so I have less in this corner and it doesn't want to bunch up completely in this corner, allowing me to keep this edge flat, so I'm going to split. This little shrinker, push it down, little shrinker, push it down, little shrinker, now I'm going to go at normal speed and finish this corner up, so long story short, the most important thing to remember is to organize your spikes, make sure that you are shrinking. the peaks and the peaks only when you're learning to reduce the size rewind that rewind that rewind that keep watching it put it in slow motion keep watching it because it's really watching the movie and learning to read the movie and what the movie is what the movie is doing film literally tells you what to do next, you just need to learn what to pay attention to, so again, factory to factory edge is the only way you can shrink the film, shrinking to one side will damage the film and pinch it. the movie almost immediately and then at least that part is ruined and nine times out of ten it moves quickly in, so you've ruined a good chunk of the movie, so if it's in a rear window and you shrink it to a On the other hand, it's practically going to ruin it very quickly, it's hard to recover from that, so let's go back and I'm going to finish this window and you can see some of the techniques here at the top, it's a little more grouped, so what I like What I have to do is pull just a little bit to pull it again all I'm doing is pulling the spikes and then heat it up a little bit and put it in and drain it so I'll show you guys I'm not going to go in too much. detail, we will post more videos, we will detail it a little more, but I wanted to cover the main basics that you really need to focus on and practice, that will allow you to quickly shrink a rear glass, so anyway enjoy the rest of the video and I will summarize the final alright guys so that's the basics about window tinting rear window shrinking video again I wanted to post something that you know covered a little more detail explaining the number one movie I follow . saying think factory edge factory edge roll end roll end that's the way the film will shrink that's the only way the film will shrink don't heat it too much watch it shrink slowly tap at a time, reduce half an inch at a time, one inch at a time, make sure you push them down so you can see where you're going, keep your fingers going up and down, keep the points at the top, reduce the points and, um, you won't get Do it right away, but knowing that kind of knowledge and really focusing on it, you should shrink an entire rear glass in one piece in no time, so thanks for watching. uh tint depot has all the tools you need the film you need my go to is superior carbon they have many other good films ranging from their budget style film to their extreme premium ceramics uh nano ceramics so check them out tinpo.com, mention me and take a look and see you soon, thanks.
