sean

evans

thanks for joining us

sean

thanks for inviting me a long time ago on this yeah, a very, very special guest For us, I would say I wish I could do it in person, but it's very unlikely to be covert any time soon, besides That location in Australia is semi-inconvenient for me, but I'm happy we're making it happen now, you know what I am. saying, uh, it's tradition on the show to start with a drink, so what's your poison of choice?
sean evans talks hot ones while drinking cold ones
I'm not really a drinker, but I did have some bacardi hanging like a spiced rum, you know, the stuff is sent to the house. For some reason, I'm like spicy types, so I drink a lot of hot sauce and weird stuff, so I have some spiced rum ready to go. I'm ahead of you, all right, sweet, I've got my tequila and my crown. and applause, applause, applause, gentlemen, I haven't had that taste in a

while

, you get tired of people sending you spicy things, be, yes, you know, the packages will appear in the house, I don't know who sent them or why . like yesterday was amazing like joe's kc is like this famous steakhouse they just sent me like a freezer full of meats i bought some burgers like umami from like Major Laser because like Diplo has a new song, you know, like everything that It used to be sent to the office now it's arrived to the apartment, so it's like a little Christmas every time you know the NFL sent some stuff for opening weekend, like bags of chips and stuff like that, I don't know, I just It's like a grip.

More Interesting Facts About,

sean evans talks hot ones while drinking cold ones...

It's obviously affected you a lot, but what do you think is the worst thing about this when you're doing hot stuff other than in person? It sucks, I mean, obviously there's you know the technical aspects, you know you have to trust the other person for the video and the audio and sometimes that gets messed up or even if they get it right you know you could have some kind of mistake. of corrupted data or some loading problem. or whatever on top of all that, as you know, people aren't pushing their movie release, they're pushing their book release, they're pushing their album release like nobody's really in a promotion cycle like the of everyone. stuck in a holding pattern, so it's challenged us and also nothing really prepares you for it, you know, we have the same team, the same team that we've been working with since the beginning and then all of these are like new challenges we have.
sean evans talks hot ones while drinking cold ones
Now we're just faced with making it all happen, the other thing is we've had people who are more unstable now, who maybe won't show up, like when it's time to zoom, we don't let you know in advance and we do it. There's a lot of prep and research ahead of time and then logistically we have to make sure we can get the sauces in time for the shoot, like turning around the editing, so it's all been like a crazy Rubik's Cube. fit into place and total pain in the butt, but on the bright side, as you know, we're still doing it, like we're still trying to make the best show we can now that we're on. in people's homes there is no oversight on how people sauce the wings so we send out a best practices pdf, no one reads that, like people are just dumping sauce all over the wings so they've been like crazy kamikazes like anarchy. episodes that have been lovely and like a nice byproduct of all this but overall it sucks, can't wait to get back in the studio, no one wants to get back in the studio worse than me, it's definitely a big draw to see celebrities pulled out of that comfort zone with hot sauce.
sean evans talks hot ones while drinking cold ones
I love seeing them very well together because you had a Marquis Marco Robbie. Am I saying his name right? Yes, Margot, and she is a beautiful actress and a compatriot. Yes, she is Australian. Also, yeah, and she comes on the show and she's bogan, this Australian accent, hot wings, sweating, crying, snotty, it's really cool to see this well put together celebrity being portrayed in the media and you know, perfect, and then they come in to the show like, oh me. I'm dying, help me send help, yeah, it's humanizing, you know, for us, um, we didn't have that idea originally, it's not like we thought, oh, that's how it will be, you know, everyone's trying to make that show, what's it like? have it? a beer with this person kind of cold but like everyone's trying to do that show all the time uh but no one can really do that show and I think we kind of did it accidentally because celebrity is something that by definition is this unattainable lifestyle, but there's nothing that every person can relate to more than just dying on hot sauce, so it really brings everyone down on a real human level and I think that's what people enjoy.
Taking people off a pedestal on the show now, I think there are a million shows where a celebrity takes a lie detector test and then they like to build Ikea furniture and then they like to do this and then they like to do that and then there's one about eating disgusting things, I can't remember what talk show it is, oh it does, so now there's like a million of those things that I think are interesting either to their credit or their fault, they've probably had something to do with that, but I think like now I don't even know if Hot Ones breaks through.
I think it had to be 2015. YouTube had to be what it was. It had to exist. I think about all the crazy coincidences that had to happen. it was exactly the right thing to get everything going and even in the beginning the show wasn't getting any views or whatever like we used to joke like I was eating a bunch of really spicy chicken wings like no one gives a you know even the ways it was kind of a trend, like people tried to package it and sell it like there were a million ways it could have gone wrong and they just somehow didn't like it for what it was.
The exact moment it went, it went somewhere because, like you said, it started, it was a little slow. Do you remember the time when you uploaded a celebrity of any of you, like what interview or what celebrity it was? You know, she shot herself. the program and I met is the sex the success is today the first really innovative episode was the key episode and bare like that was the first one we published and it was like a great success on reddit and it had millions of views and things like that it was the first time that I thought, "Wow, the Internet is like paying attention to what we're doing.
What encouraged me is that it lifted all the other boats, like people discovered the show and then binge-watched it." catalog back and that's when I knew I was like, oh, we're on something like I've always liked binge shows, so I was like, oh, we're doing that binge show that I've always wanted to do, so I think that's one. The Kevin Hart episode is another episode that took it to another level. I think once Charlize Theron came on the show, then I thought anyone could be on the show. I think that put us on a certain level and then having Gordon Ramsay on the show was the next thing that took it to a level and then it was a big meme for years, plus everyone was like get Gordon Ramsay, get Gordon Ramsay and as a viewer when I saw that I thought oh my god they did it it's like 70 million now I think it was like that I think it was just because it was like a fantasy dream on the internet that came to life and I think that's like the good thing of YouTube is that the audience can like to actively shape and inform what you do on your show and that was kind of a manifestation of that.
Okay, let's move on to another take. I think you've already opened that beer, Mr. Evans. Look at it, it's broken, it's broken, just double check too, can you give us the blessing that we are the only show that can have the name that is a derivative of the most popular ones? Can you give us your official host blessing with this, greetings first of all. You know I'm with you so this is what I thought and what our name had was that the show has nothing to do with hot like a lot of other things it's like oh this is a parody of hot but now they continue. like this is something like the cold ones is a thing especially in Australia having a cold one with the guys is something and then the hot ones and then obviously we steal we also steal your sign but that's it so you don't have for you guys , you don't have to sell me to Max, I'm already along for the ride, like it's good to start.
You have my blessing. I love the program and greetings to you, thank you. Greetings, big shot. I just want it in words. Can. Always link or post to it and stay ahead. I don't like shoes. Every pair of shoes I buy ends up looking like I want them or inevitably will because I subject them to my massive 300 kilos of weight. I spilled a lot of alcohol on my shoes because I'm a belligerent drunk, so we're happy to partner with Vessy. Bessie makes stylish, trendy, 100% waterproof and drug-proof shoes, bring me a beer. I'm going to spill beer on them now. to test this theory, get revenge on the beer, okay man, those actually look pretty fresh, they smell good, can I have them?
No, they're mine, you overflowed the beer, man, no problem with Bessie, she's beer proof, Scott, look, phones aren't waterproof, look, okay, wait for this. It's not mine, this is my assistant, Vessy, no problem, dry what's dry, buddy, do it with shoes and not only do they not break under my enormous weight, they don't break the bank either and they come in many different varieties, shapes and styles this is my favorite it seems like I play tennis but I'm not good at it, do you play tennis? Yes, they are cruelty free, lightweight and breathable, they keep you cool in summer and warm in winter, so if you are in the market for cool clothes. new sneakers, head to the link in the description and use the code cold sneakers to get 25 off.
These shoes are already super affordable, look at my feet, they're not wet, they're dry, look at this dry as a bun, don't do that when you go back to the people who have scammed your program because there are many things, there are many and it's not just the youtubers that who ripped off the program, now there are traditional media companies that have started as complete clones of the popular ones, how can you? I'm sorry about that, feel free to get angry, well, like when it started happening, like I remember we started the show, but like we weren't really getting anywhere and then I saw the first thing I saw was Fox Sports Australia.
The rugby brothers were doing the show with exactly the same sauces and everything, and they were calling it like burning questions or something. They were doing exactly that and the reason it came on my radar was because people were coming after me. We'd drop a hot episode and they'd say you guys are just copying hot questions or whatever this show is, this is like these rugby idiots and then the same weekend the BBC did a show called hot topics and I watched as if their camera angles were the same like she was like how are you with spicy food like I'm like what and then you know like you've seen it?
I've seen things like that in the past like I think I went after like mtv recently because they did something and then what would drive me crazy is they would say why are people copying our show copying our fucking set, like you're just going to copy the program, isn't it? an improvement that you would make as if you never understood why people would like to hack the set we had because we just didn't have anything. I was like that doesn't make sense to me, so from the beginning, yes, I would get my blood. I'd like to take pictures on Twitter and stuff and then I don't know if it's like old age or whatever, but now I like it, I don't care at all.
Um, I think it's kind of inevitable with the Internet, that at some point these things end up happening. I think it's a little annoying. Sometimes people say it's a parody. It's a parody, but it's like I don't know it. We don't just make a worse version of our show, like we already have a comedy show, so the bar for parody is a little higher than I think a lot of people on the Internet think it is, it's one thing to make a parody, but it's another thing to do a parody and then keep that format and be like, oh yeah, now we do this as a normal thing, I think it's a unique thing where it's like a hottest parody is a thing, but yeah.
What do you think of the funny edits like meme edits that people make? I'm the one that stands out in my head, it's the Paul Radwan one where he interviews himself. Well, you know, I really like the second life. The episodes unfold, you know, after the episode, what's weird is that the other week I did something with Paul Rudd, nothing to do with hot guys or whatever, but it was the first time I'd seen him since we filmed the episode together and that's what we talked about as a friend, open or whatever they think so we're watching this fist fight right on sunset boulevard and then you hear this person go holy that's shawn

evans

and how these guys who were in a fist fight stopped their fight so they could take a photo with me through the window, so I'm like vomiting on them, but since they are on the other side of the window and they take a photo with me and then they fight again

while

we organize our dreams and we just watch them fight and then I said to myself myself, honest to God, I thought: remember this moment because this is a good anecdote from the podcast, in case it comes up, some Roman gladiator battle or something you're watching through the window, it was a Street Fighter game they played on pause before we finish, no, let's look at the photos.
I think that's where it all started for me, so I was doing independent projects for complexes, which led to me doing some crazy interviews with Two Chains and Damian Lillard and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and Snoop Dogg and like all these different people and originally They were supposed to be print interviews and then the complex thing is like we can put them on YouTube because we're trying to move to video and then we'll have like one of the publications that we hired to do the interview. so they said let's take all your work and put it aside, as a friend you can just hang out at the w in downtown new orleans, like go to the dunk contest, go to the all star games, like enjoy your weekend week, we will take care of everything. the work made me so angry, I got so angry, I was like I was doing these interviews, like I set up these interviews, like you guys want to leave me, then leave me, I understand the power you have here, but you and um, you were like Jesus, Dude, that's not what we were trying to imply at all, like uh, we just thought we were taking some work off your plate and thought you might like to enjoy the weekend, but that's okay, if you want to do the interviews.
We're just going to put the interviews on video, so I said, "Okay, do it, do it, damn, it looks like things could have been different if you didn't have that fire in your belly to put out that sudden gift." You don't have that pair of nuts if you don't have that pair of nuts. I think about that. I think about that all the time. I think about that all the time. Where are you now with that relationship? Are you happy with her? things are and you have as a driving force with like negotiation and being because you are clearly the face of the brand that is very it is very strange that you have nothing to do with the iep it also demonstrates it through videos because I mean, as you know, I'm not comparing it to anyone else on the first channel you binge on, but anything with your face or brain on it tends to get significantly more views than anything else on the channel.
I'm not taking that as something I like. that I like this part of the interview I like this party more importantly why do you have hair in this photo what's going on there you know I can still do that if I wanted to I you should you should do that for an episode mention the photo patrick harris without hair are you happy with how things are, though how they're going, yeah, I mean, at the end of the day, at the end of the day, like I'm grateful that things are better for me than they are. Have you ever been, you know, at the end of the day, I appreciate it, like we can have regular jobs, you know, that are like whatever, but it becomes a broader context of whatever you're discussing, just where you could be.
Look at what the value of this is in relation to the eyeballs it attracts. You can look at your own value and figure out what you're worth in the context of all those things. Judge whether or not you are being treated fairly and like wherever you are. At the end of the day, like for me, I stay a little quiet publicly because, like people who are watching this or whatever, it's good for me, there's definitely a balance between you don't want to be underestimated, but also you. I also have to understand how good you have it, yes, and I would say that in order to like any creativity, you know what I mean, you have to put the resources that were presented to you in context and put a value on them.
Things and stuff like that, just hold on to yourself like Who am I? It's me? That's me, but at the end of the day you can't underestimate what you contribute to this and then at the end of the day you can't underestimate the success of The thing is that I'm happy and things are good and great, but you know, like Max, you go to the shows you like on YouTube and you see someone you've never heard of and they have like four Teslas. the garage and they have like a museum, you know what I mean, I'm not what I find, yeah, very interesting, a lot of times there's not necessarily this hierarchy where it's like, oh, more subscribers. more money, more success, it's very sporadic, I find people who have managed to monetize things incredibly better than other people who like to be in the game longer or have more subscribers just because they like things they've done or certain avenues of things. opportunities that they've been given it's like they're everywhere it's not like a very flat hierarchy uh that you can just look at and 100 like at the end of the day sometimes I feel like because I'm like a guy with a talk show about chicken wings. chicken, so how much can I feel entitled to at the end of the day?
But I guess it's the value of that thing in relation to what you put in it, to me, the hottest. something that I love and that I'll want to do as long as I can do it and that's all it is at the end of the day and it's changed my life in a way that I can't even describe and uh I hope it's changed the lives of the people who watch it and those things, so seeing that joy that you've brought to others, like people writing to you like, oh this and especially on the scale that you're doing things, there's so many.
People who are like that have changed my life or this is something that keeps me active, not even at that high level, just the general joy in the lives of people who enjoy that entertainment 100%, that's what I always I liked it. I understood the value of It because of what those shows did for me, I'm trying to absorb it right now because I know it won't happen forever, there are always other opportunities, though Sean, you can go on, hey, hey, like I said, Ellen is looking for a new presenter. bro I gotta pee guys I need to pee whatever yeah I need to pay too I'm open to whatever but the hot ones are my obsession my love but I hope it continues as long as I can honestly I say that.
We finished it there, we've spent time, Sean, it's been great and it's been an honor, it really is, I need to pee too. I'll leave you here alone, I'm broke, so this is Sean Evans signing. Out for the cold for Chad to the max. Thank you very much for inviting me. I'm drunker than I've been in a long time, but it's all been for you cold ones for life. I love it, I love them.
