Restoring (And Heavily Modifying) My Abandoned Dream Car In 24 Hours

May 29, 2021
What's up, oh friend? Come on, stop playing, you have to come take a look at this. Oh, that's not good. Welcome to day 2 of virtual reality for construction and this is actually the construction part, the hard part, yeah, so in the last episode. I drove the car in the Closet fine, it jumps a little, oh, but it won't be good enough to drive 2,000 miles, one of the most grueling realities in the world, and these cars weren't exactly known for their reliability, so we got a lot of spare parts. and it's going to be interesting that they're trying to install them before we do any of that it's very hot.

I'm going to turn this on this doesn't look sketchy at all okay that should move some air that sounds pretty bad We have everything so the first thing we have is a set of replacement side mount internal coolers and they are bigger than what we have in stock. Actually, I don't know what we have in stock. I think it's like plastic and something very, very small, of course, now what? What they do is cool the air, the air charge because when they go through the turbos, the air is quite hot, it is compressed and then it has to go into the engine and engines don't like very hot air, so these are very, very thick boys. but they are supposed to fit in the original mounting locations and they are supposed to fit with all the original tubes, but coming here is the main focus of what I want to do today and that is getting cold so I guess about the interviewers and the It's an important job to do, but maybe a more important job is to keep the engine cool and we have a larger aluminum radiator and we have some cutting-edge OE technology - now Peak is actually the sponsor of the video of today and I wanted to take a little time. and I talk about this because I use it in all my cars.

restoring and heavily modifying my abandoned dream car in 24 hours...

I don't use this specific currency because there are different types here, they are Asian vehicles and if your vehicle is listed, mine is here in Mitsubishi 1990 and up, that's what you need. that's all you need, it's premixed 50:50, you don't need to have distilled water. In fact, I also really like it because I can walk and grab what I need for the car I need. You don't have to mix it up right here we have some really good brake upgrades we have Karbala tech XP with eight pads and if you can see here it says pre-tuned basically every time you get rotors and pads you have to put them on it's like a joining process. and you have to go up to a certain speed, brake to a certain speed and then do it again and again, that process is not exactly the best, especially since we are in the middle of a city, so these came to the free bed and I have to do anything and we also have these stop tech rotors we're going to be doing a lot of braking so I thought we might as well get everything new now that it's coming here we also have some new radiator hoses and then we have a full exhaust.

This was just an aftermarket exhaust that I bought on eBay. It should make the car sound a little better and run a little better because turbo cars run a lot better with a bigger exhaust. I think this is three or four inches. This is the maybe stack. because I really know what the history of this car is and it's only had 5,000 miles since I last sold it, so I have an oil pump, I have a timing belt kit, I have a bunch of OAM Mitsubishi parts that I have every time I go. from here gasp it's the timing belt adjuster and I have a full set of gaskets and I bought Puccini, we may not be installing these things if we look at the car and determine that it is perfectly fine, as is, oh I think we can use tires.

Don't forget about the tires, forget about the tires, so these are my favorite tires in the world, these are Michelin Pilot Sport flores and they are not the same size that I have on a car up to 6535 18 and these will be a big improvement with Regarding the disgusting, rotten and dry tires, which do not match throughout the season, which I bought used five years ago, the most important thing is that they are advanced the same, yes, they are for the same times, several have permission to match tires, We have to start the car and see what's underneath because I've never actually had the car on the lift and I'm a little afraid of what's underneath, but it's just our week-long vacation and the trip on the line which can't be bad.
Oh, oh, what's up? Oh, buddy, come on. stop playing you gotta come take a look at this oh that's not good we're flaking a little mm-hmm unfortunately that's not the worst part now we have a small leak in the transmission which isn't terrible, but it's leaking a little. That's a universal boot they put on top of the factory boot when it cracked and it's leaking grease and actually rubbing a little. What is that gold nugget doing? Someone at some point decided this would be a good lifting point. Quick Tech Tip You don't want to lift your car up an oil pan, what do you think pushed it up a little?
It has a lot of rust and then they tried to fix the small hole with some type of welding. Ideally you would go ahead and remove the solder and repair. but unfortunately all of our bolts that secure the old pan have a lot of rust on them and the block is substantially rusted, we run into the situation that trying to remove this old pan will most likely result in many broken bolts, yes, and will put us in a situation that is impossible to get the car ready for the rally and yes, we have to tap and we just don't have the tools or anything to do it.
What we're going to end up doing is kind of a temporary repair patch where we straighten the crankcase as much as we can with it on the car, scrape off all the rust, and use some epoxy to build a little better patch on the crankcase. oil. I'll probably buy a bigger oil pan, maybe an aluminum one, because these I can't get anymore and the used ones are going to have the same problems as this one, but other than that mechanically it's actually in good shape, the ball joints , the rest of the suspension is rusty, it is not perfect, but it can be repaired, the exhaust is visible, yes. the exhaust is special, we choke a little here with this nice flexible section and we go back up here to this T, it's separated and it leaks at the top, there the O2 sensor had a kind of cross thread to the sides and It's perfect, okay? absolutely perfect, you have to figure out how to do the wrong thing the right way, which you don't always have to do, but it's something that if you ever get stuck and decide to take a car to a rally with four days of time to prepare it, yeah, How to best solve the worst situation, why don't we take our time and do it right?
That's all the time. I can usually go out, yeah, to come and help you guys, I don't want her to go well, hashtag, no. I'm not leaving so it's almost time to start putting new things on the car it's exciting so we have our old exhaust here and it looks really old and our new exhaust right next to it this is not a hundred percent 3000gt exhaust hundred original, that's how it has been. Patched up with different segments, the entire front segment is a bit bad, this is where the two turbo downpipes go under the engine to the turbos through the catalytic converter via our broken VP section.
The interesting thing is that there is only one silencer on the star so it goes into the silencer it does some magic part of it goes off and then the rest is asked to go to the other side yes another small silencer this is a hoax actually It's not a dual exhaust, it's not very good for flow, it's not very good for sound now we have this. I bought it on eBay, it was the cheapest I could get, but it has one in two and this is more, they are not true duals, obviously, true, but it is more.
I think it's more flow friendly, so let's go. talk about cooling this rally this car will be participating in will be from Santa Fe, New Mexico to San Francisco, California and will probably go through the hottest parts of the country in the middle of summer and I can't risk this car overheating. so what we're going to do is check the entire cooling system now the water pump on that car is probably fine it's not necessary for a service. I did it 5,000 miles ago and they are good for about 60,000 miles but the rest of the cooling system needs to be changed especially the coolant and as I mentioned before I am using this peak OE technology for Asian vehicles and this It's exactly what my car needs, so a rule of thumb for me is that I buy a little more than I need just because I don't know how much it's going to cost.
I don't know if I'll have any leaks in the future and you always want to have a little more than you need and so you can get what you need, I made a deal with Peak to get five dollars off these one gallon jugs from OAE. All you have to do is hit the link in the video description below and take it to your local auto parts store. Where they sell these guys is great because you can take all the guesswork out of your cooling system and it's very affordable so go check it out. Are you crossing things out?
Yes, they did something, we did a lot and that's because it's the next day, it's our last day before turning into pumpkins and we have to go do the rally, but this is what we did and we checked a bunch of things off the list and Let's review what we did first. Take a look at that type of exhaust, I took out the mufflers, we don't want a quiet car, he also did the brakes, so we have the Stop Tech rotors, we have the Carbo Tech pads and those are the front ones, you can see the new pads at the right. there and I had a great time installing these new internal coolers and they look great.
I really like the fit of the inner cores. The pipes, however, were a different story. The pipes were fine. It was a nightmare because these cars, especially the '99s. They had a different emissions system than the '91, so even in '98, the carbon canister down here was in a different place on the earlier cars and that meant it had different intercooler pipes and the CX racing intercoolers we have were built for the previous cars obviously they're not going to build a part just for a car they only build 200 or so of so we had to get creative.
I had to make my own pipe, we took one of their pipes and just cut it up and relocated the oil cooler a little further back, just put it on a stud back there and made some modifications, cut some brackets and stuff, but everything is there, hopefully it shouldn't increase the leak and take a look at the difference, so this is that stock and then that's the big boy here, so this should ensure that we don't get soaked in heat, at least not as quickly, Also, this radiator was a little tricky to deal with because since it's larger than the stock radiator it didn't fit 100%, we actually had to knock this back a little bit and the radiator is actually resting on this radiator bracket.
I wanted to make sure it didn't irritate anything, so we just took a little piece of cut-off vacuum hose. in the middle and that's the buffer between this metal and that metal, plus we had you definitely can't see it here, we have to polish some bumps, there were some highlight bolts, you definitely have to polish them or else your new radiator will have some holes new. We haven't put coolant in it yet and we haven't put in the intake pipe yet because we ran into our problem with the wave. Yeah, okay, KS fake hit. shut off valve yeah yeah let's take a look we have a snout out of the valve seat that keeps falling off yeah and the problem with this car since it's a mass air car every time it comes apart , it sucks in unmetered air and then when you turn on to boost it's not sitting so you have a giant boost leak so you're sucking in air when you're not supposed to and you have a leak there yeah when you don't want to , so for those of you who don't know.
What is this thing? This is a bleed valve, basically, when the car does a boost the boost comes in here and then it goes into the engine, however when you close the throttle it shuts off all that boost in this tube and then it basically goes back in. turbos unless you have one of these and this is a bleed valve and it opens under vacuum that way it lets all that boost pressure out and makes a little cool noise however this one yeah that insert is which makes the Whistle, yes the whistle, however as far as I know this is not a real HKS, it looks like Chinese pop metal and you can tell the casting is just rubbish so it basically fell apart and we bought a new one and it's on its way from Amazon.
Hopefully he'll make it in time, and if not, we'll have to deal with that Chinaman. I really don't want to, although I also don't want pieces of that potentially falling into the engine, so it's a Mitsubishi. you can eat all the plastic, that's very true, that's the opposite of true, so on top of that we made the liquidtransmission, we did the differential fluid, transfer case fluid and bled the brakes, we also did some weight reduction. Here it is, well this is an interesting piece because the clutch pedal on this car actually has a booster like you would see on a brake, so it has a power clutch that I've never seen on any car except the clutch .
I have noticed that it is very, very difficult to push. I guess I'll deal with that, but this is a reservoir, so it ensures the booster still has pressure after you turn off the car; However, if you look here you can see there's a pretty big crack in this plastic tank, so this is junk, this isn't doing anything and all we did was remove it, it's a little bit of weight going in the trash. , also blocked your intercooler, also blocked my intercooler and Probably gave me a vacuum or a subsequent leak, so yeah, I found a lot of those, well, you missed all the other fun we had here.
Good evening all the vacuum lines and by fun I mean absolute misery ok the previous owner had had it one of the previous owners probably the fifth owner is right that would be you would let me that means we found that the boost control solenoid was connected to the exhaust gas recirculation valves and that the exhaust gas recirculation valves are on the boost arc before we get to technologically advanced for us here is the vacuum routing. I don't know if you guys can figure that out, that's too complicated, especially for a 90's car, they should color code it or make it like a B C, that would have been nice, but all. it's just black and it goes everywhere so that's what we had to deal with and redesign because some of this stuff wasn't even working right yeah there was nothing there so now it's hooked up right we've got the radiator hoses , the thermostat.
Yes, you also make the thermostat. The thermostat is under here, it's right there. Actually, it's not that difficult to get to. We made the fuel filter and the fuel filter. We have the K&N filter down there that was actually spotless, so that saved us 10 minutes, but yeah. it's when you try to do all this is substantial, yeah, and we also have a new battery in there because the old battery was starting the car great, but it was leaking at the top and on the side it was swelling. a little bit and once the gas starts coming out, that means the battery is useless, you don't want to charge it because that thing could explode now.
I think we should probably check to see if our timing belt is okay, any way you can. Look, there's a cam cover here and you can just inspect the timing belt, shouldn't you? I mean, I put this in about four years ago and it's only had 5,000 miles on it, so no, I don't think it should. be in horrible shape, we should be at 100% lifespan, but this is the possibility that things could be terribly wrong. There are actually no scuff marks or anything that you can see. It's not often you see a little separation. I will be looking for cracks or something, yes you will see small cracks, if you ever see cracks on the back of your belt replace it immediately.
I mean, it's flexible. There's actually pretty good care here. of these cars they have come loose a lot because it's a weird setup with the tensioner, the tensioner actually needs oil pressure and then when you don't have the car on for a while it basically loses all that tension, yeah the belt on this one side is just a little loose and that's normal on this car, so one important thing with this engine and similar engines for Mitsubishi is that if it's been sitting for a long time, don't push the starter because you'll probably run the risk of it jumping. a tooth if you are towing it, you don't have it running because the car is going to bite, so back and forth and again it loses oil pressure, time can skip and you know it very well, right?
Yes, a curious fact. I had this car shipped. from my house and then they had it on a regular shipping trailer and then when it got to its destination it wouldn't start because it skipped time and I think it's because they had the car running and then when the truck was moving. you may have simply changed something and skipped your script; Fortunately nothing on the engine was damaged and it ran perfectly fine and runs perfectly fine now, but we are fine with the maintenance, it will definitely go another 2,000 miles I don't think. It should be a problem right now, we need to put everything back together on the car, that feels good at the moment, we're just putting everything back on, putting the wheels on the tires and then it will be the first start, all the right moment of the truth. this is the first start after our kind of 24 hour restoration, it's been like just one day, it's the first day that the bar gets here until yesterday a little bit today and this is the first real yeah, this is the first real start.
Isn't this not like the first Discovery Channel release? Yes, are you nervous on a scale of 1 to 10? How nervous are you? Oh she runs, she lives, does she leak? I don't believe it. I hear a little more of the exhaust. We'll rub it in after the temperature goes up, but what we're going to do now is we're going to burp the coolant. Actually, can you turn on the air conditioning? Yes, it's on, yes, yes, the heat on full so we can burp up the coolant system. so all we have to do is recharge the air conditioning then she should be ready to go this sounds pretty good yeah it sounds a lot better it will turn on excited I'm excited yeah you have all wheel drive we're on it. the road and it feels pretty good it feels it feels really good it feels a lot neater the idol is better the power is better for a long time I mean we just drove it down the street but it's coming from a stop the suspension definitely needs work, on actually no.
I don't know what the wiring is so it hasn't been done yet. These roads in Dallas, yeah, they're not good, they're not good, Dallas roads are fine, it just tells Bushland that it's still overspeeding a little bit, so we have to calculate. That's because it picks up speed pretty well, but I don't want the engine to blow up, but that's all we do, execute the shakedown well, so we push this reduction, we do a good job and I think we have our official gear. response vehicles and We have a drone okay so this is where the car used to be and that's where the car is now and I have my friends here and they will help me.
Friends, you have names, aren't you Palin and Stephen? yeah I know, 0-2 is amazing and now it's 0-2, amazing details is just your helicopter today we'll see that these guys are actually very responsible for me getting my Murcielago, they were the creators of my trailer in which I finished. knitting well, well it's in California, I'm sure it's still there, it'll probably be in the next Fast and Furious movie, we just took this on its first run and learned a lot of things, number one, it still sounds for overboost. but we're not really going to go over 14 psi, that's actually fine.
Maybe it's that the system thinks we're going more than necessary and that's fine, we can be faster in this car, another thing is that I filled the coolant too much. Here this is the expansion tank and well, it peed all over the front, which is no big deal, we're just going to have to get some of the coolant out. The reason I overfilled it is simply because there is nothing real. marking where it's full but everything else seems very very good other than that suspension and the reason I haven't connected the suspension yet is because these cables are different colors but we'll figure that out in a second but I love it. how this car drives and looks and actually speaking of how it looks this car looks very very dirty and that's why those guys are here because for the last part of this video we're going to review completely the look of this car.
Amazing, oh my god guys, this is my car, this is the car I fell in love with all those years ago and this is the car I wanted to build all those years ago. It's not one hundred percent, it's not perfect, but I like it. It's like that, I love that this car has been lived in, it's been driven, it looks fantastic and I can't thank the guys there enough. They did an incredible job. Jared, you've been busting your ass working on this thing we have. This was done in just over 24

hours

, this was a day, just a day of heartbreak.
I'm very happy that there's nothing amazing because I don't enjoy that side and they did, yes, they meant they came, this is one of the best looking cars I've ever seen and I'm glad I'm proud to have them and that my friend helped me with this. It's a lot of fun, but we actually did a little bit more off camera because When we did the test drive, we heard that we were overboosting or what we thought was excessive boost, I was told it was the hiss or overboost warning, but we investigated a little more and it turns out that that is not the case, so the wastegates actually work, everything works until the turbo system or sit, yes, yes, but it still made that noise.
These have the clutch boost assist and we held that big vacuum diaphragm and that's there, so when the car is off, you have assist on that first, so the pedal, so the pedal is not as firm, no. It's so heavy, because just by the design system there is a hose that would connect from here that goes to this system, that goes out to a couple more valves and then comes back to here. so we limited it and eliminated that system to get rid of that whistle, so it's going to be a tough problem for this car, it doesn't really matter, it's just a thing that I'm living with, like in the deal between us.
I've driven custom cars, yeah, better, yeah, this isn't, this isn't that bad eventually I want to rebuild that system, but it's not a big deal which is totally driveable and actually makes it a little more fun if you drive it. a little bit, the man pedal, right, the man pedal, that's right, so another thing we did was reconnect the suspension and it took a little bit of research on the Internet, but we discovered the color coded cables and let's see. If it works because of the way they also did the inside and it looks fantastic, it looks new and we can live in it for the next week and it won't look as good, no, definitely not, there will probably be some wrappers from some pepperoni sticks, yeah, so put the key in the ignition and oh, it's going, look it's a front zero, zero, rear zero, and we can and it just moves those little motors, that's amazing and now we have all our settings and basically we can do.
It's whatever we want, as it is now, this car is completely fixed, we're on the side of the road, we might be a little late for the drivers' meeting.
