Rebuilding The LAST Manual Audi R8 EVER MADE (With 150,000 Miles On It!)

May 30, 2021
How are you guys doing? My name is Irish and today will be a little different. This is a 2015 Audi r8 and is not a very low mileage example. It doesn't have a thousand horsepower twin turbo kit and it's not even mine, but this one. The car is one of the most important in modern history because this car, this exact car, was the

last

one equipped with a closed

manual

transmission and today I'm going to rebuild it, so if you're new to the channel, thank you very much for watching. I really hope you enjoy it and consider subscribing if this is the type of projects and cars you like to see now.

I usually only work on my own cars. I don't take anyone else's cars as projects, but when I heard the story of this car. and its owner, he had to do something, so this story starts a few years ago, in fact, when I bought that Lamborghini Gallardo, you see that Michelin invited me to the launch of their sports pilot 4, where I got to drive a bunch of cars and basically feel what those tires are now during that experience, I met a lot of really interesting people and one of the amazing people I met was Eric Deetz, he was a Porsche experience driver and worked closely with Michelin, he's a really amazing guy and we really finished.

More Interesting Facts About,

rebuilding the last manual audi r8 ever made with 150 000 miles on it...

I went to the Goodwood Festival of Speed the following year, so Eric and I kept in touch after those press events and became good friends. Now I knew I had some really cool cars in the stable but this was probably the best, this is a 2015 Audi r8 v8 and for those of you who know a little about outies you will know that Audi's v8 program officially ended in 2014 .This is the only v8 from 2015 and is also the

last

one with a closed

manual

transmission. It was specifically ordered by Erik throughout II I think Erik had to beg them to do this car, but I love the way it turned out, the Nardo gray paint, it's not primer.

I love the carbon fiber accents and I love the fact that this car was designed with a v8 and it came with a V8 and that's how Eric wanted it and honestly I think I agree with him, this car was driven Probably more than any other R8 on earth, this car has one hundred and forty-three thousand

miles

on it as is. now he has been to the Nurburgring he has been to two places he has been all over Europe

ever

y race track he has been to

ever

y race track in the United States he has taken countless road trips from coast to east coast he was a daily driver and a dream sports car for Eric, he absolutely adored it and he LOVED this car, but the only thing he loved more was his fiancée and a few years ago his fiancée was diagnosed with stage 3 breast cancer and Eric's life was turned upside down.

He had to sell everything he had to make ends meet to make sure she was getting the treatment she needed, all the money they saved from their businesses or from their work with Michelin and their work with Porsche, all of that had to going to basically keep her alive, this was the last thing on the list, this was something he wouldn't do. I didn't want to get rid of it, but I would because obviously that's more important than this car would ever be, so this car essentially became his true daily driver. He didn't have any other car to commute to work or do anything else.
This was no longer a luxury, this was a necessity and the car didn't really have it at the time, so the engine gave the price of a new engine and the installation would have cost over $30,000 and obviously with the situation with its promised that wouldn't have been an option, so that's when I offered to help him because what I have is a workshop and I have tools. I told Eric that if he could get an engine, then I could do the work to surpass the big billion-dollar brand that makes cars. Everyone stepped up and gave Eric a new long block for this car.
Now it's not that simple, a long block is not just you put it in and that's it, there are a lot of little things that go into it, there are a lot of things. Little things around the engine that would need to be replaced now we didn't know what it was but I was willing to find out and someone else, in fact another company was also willing to find out and that company is Auto Tempest, now you guys will. I knew I work with Auto Tempest on almost all of my big projects, but this one is a little different again.
It's not something I found at Auto Tempest, but this type of car is what you would look for at Auto Tempest. You could search. an amazing own project car, you can look for your dream car, you can look for something cheap. Auto Tempest is probably the best partner I have ever had and that is accentuated by the fact that they are donating twenty thousand dollars to cancer research. Because of this video I would like to thank Auto Tempest personally, they are amazing guys and if you want to donate to the same Cancer Research then the link will be in the description below.
Sometimes you might wonder why I'm standing in front of the car instead of getting dirty and getting to work, that's because this car is already finished. You see, the process of doing all this reconstruction took more than half a year. I videotaped it all so you can see exactly what is involved in putting it on. a new engine in a very iconic, very exotic and, I mean, very attractive car, so without further ado, let's go back in time and see what it's like. OK lets start. This engine is a 4.2-liter, 420-horsepower V8. Well, that's how it would be.
If you didn't have a dead cylinder, now one of the cylinders is long compression. You definitely don't want that in a high-performance engine in a high-performance supercar, so what we have to do is pull the engine. and I've never actually done that before, so that makes me really excited because I don't know what I'm getting into, right? Isn't it something new on the channel that I do things when I don't do them? I actually have a plan for this. This is going to be impossible. I have no idea what this is all about. I'm doing well, listen.
I did it all off camera, uh-huh, so of course, you don't know where it's going, we can cut it. liber8 guy look at that now we're dragging a wheel that's okay buddy that's it, I'm done, I'm done, I don't want to do this anymore oh at least there's room for two more cylinders in there and turbo and turbos and turbos and a supercharger that is exactly what it is nitrous nitrous yes maybe just nitrous or maybe just nothing this is the new engine coming in now when they sent a long block it doesn't look like that this is with all the repairs though I can't put the engine in the car because we are missing some vital components.
If you go down here and remove this, you'll see that there's a little hole here and a bearing goes in there and then a shaft goes through the motor because of course this is an all-wheel drive car. Now that axle was actually broken. Oh, the shaft is back here. I can see it, so I'll show you what I mean. Now this shaft is what goes inside. the engine doesn't go in the oil pan, but it goes next to it and there are these little bearings, right, Jared is holding it now, so there are these little bearings and they're not supposed to be like this, this is a press fit and these Yes, that's not a press fit.
You can also see that this is very strange, it seemed like it was quite hot, so unfortunately it can't be saved because the bearing race, which is usually harder metal than the shaft itself, had a groove here. I can actually feel the lip a little bit and since these are interference fit which means you have to put this in a well at least just touch this this won't work especially since we have a new engine so that I had to ask for it. new from Germany and it takes between two and three weeks to return here.
This is the Audi 4.2 that we took out of the Nardo r8. This is the 143 thousand mile example. Yes, so check that these are supposed to be clean ports for entry. and yes, they are not very clean, this is a very, very dirty engine and the reason is that it is a direct injection engine. Unfortunately, these engines don't have the advantage of a traditional port injection engine, which is that the gas actually cleans the valves when they go into direct injection, the injectors are here, they're inside the cylinder, so everything here can gum up. with oil, especially if you don't have a can, that's what happened with this, I think a lump of charcoal. or something hardened just went into the cylinder, it just scored the cylinder wall and gave it low compression, so this would have to be rebuilt at some point if it was going to be usable, but honestly, I mean, it's a cool watch, no one It has 143 thousand. motor a mile away and maybe Audi will want us back.
I don't know, so would you believe it? This is two months later, a lot has happened between when we were waiting for parts and right now, but the car is almost almost ready, it looks like a There's a long way to go, but it's really not that long, you can see that Gerardus is a bit scruffy and I, oh wow, we did a lot in the meantime, we got the parts, the parts took a month on their own and then we filmed a little thing. It was called Car Trek and it did a lot of other things, but now we are back on this project and this will be finished today and we will have the first start of the new engine, but let me go over everything you need. "It's got to be done from now on, so if you come in here you'll be able to see that new engine.
I love seeing new parts, they're all so shiny and then you go to the kind of used parts, the ones that have 140,000

miles

on them and they're not so shiny, but we still clean them anyway. What we have to do is connect all these coolant lines down here wherever they go. This is for the alternator and the main power for the starter motor. We have the shaft that goes to the front we have the accessory belt and we also have the AC lines that go through here. Obviously we have to drain and fill the air conditioning well.
We don't have to drain it, it's already drained. vacuum in the system and then fill the system and up here just make sure everything is tight, there are no bolts holding the motor in right now, there will be after we're done, but we're going to tighten everything down at the bottom and then we'll go up and figure out the harness, run that to the inside, put all the fittings on, put on the exhaust, put on the intake manifold, hopefully everything goes back to where it came from, no broken hoses or missing fittings and then we can start it up for the first time.
Oh before that we also have to put in all the fluids because you don't want to start a new engine without that it's bad you need some time okay it's time for the first start we have the air box on we have all the coolant and oil and fluids inside the engine we need to fill them after the engine is running and also the engine has oil. I know a lot of people are worried about the cylinders not being lubricated, the engine actually ran in the Audi. factory these are not new engines they have some miles on them just because they need to wear them down a little to make sure everything is running properly so there is some oil in the engine in the block there is enough oil. in the oil tank we have the transmission full of fluid we have the clutch bled and we have no exhaust which is going to be very spicy and we're just going to send it right let's send it right no I actually like sending it we're just trying to see if This thing turns on and doesn't explode, hopefully it won't explode, it's a new engine, let's cycle the key.
I can't exactly get into this car right now. just because there is no room but put in the on position everyone is busy going to town yes the air pumps make some noise but a small chin for any fuel leaks yes yes there is a week , okay, okay, the second round turns out that two of the fittings were It's not too tight, no, I thought we weren't going to include that first, let's see if this leaks, something works, nothing, okay, the engine should have a little bit of oil, yes, they tell me to put it out, just shout very loud, okay, okay, very loud because there is nothing okay, you are the fire extinguisher right there three two one I'm going to put it out that drank a little cooling drank a call

made

some strange noise no, it blew some of the horrible old burnt oil from the bad engine but Okay, they started up very quickly and happily, so that's it, that's a good sign.
Well, we have to let it run for about two minutes and then we'll check the oil level because it's a dry sump and then maybe top off with oil and then we'll leave it. our idle for a while, not too much idle, we need to keep the RPM moving on the new engine, so that's fine, even if it's running for the most part, you don't want to sit there and maintain a static RPM for too long, it's Well, it sounds good, that's right. Sorry okay let's jump right into the test drive it's very very dark in here look how this works wow it's pretty loud so the problem with test driving a car like this is that these Cars are meant to be driven hard on a track like this.
It has a dry sump v8 designed for G and tight corners, the problem is that this is a new engine and Audi recommends no more than 4,000 rpm and 50% throttle, which is the maximum we canreach, so what am I going to do? What I'm doing here is I'm going to look and see if our pressures are good, our temperatures are good, there are no strange sounds or smells coming from the engine, now there will be some smoke due to things burning and there could be some guy. of rattles if things are left loose, after all it is a 150k mile car, but I think this should be more or less fine just because the engine started on the first try and doesn't leak anything profusely from below, so I love this closed shifter.
I think I actually like it better than the Lamborghini one, so the clutch engages very well, it engages exactly where it's supposed to be right in the middle of the pedal travel, but in first gear it's very, very easy now that the exhaust is obviously not clogged, it's a very open exhaust, which gives it a little more Oh, that sounds pretty good now that the car is not warmed up right now, it has about a quarter of the coolant temperature and it just pass the first pin on the oil temp so you have an oil cooler installed and it uses the coolant which means the oil cooler has its own thermostat and I think it opens around 240 degrees.
We will also be attentive to the warning lights. Check the engine lights. Stability control lights. That kind of thing because as the car learns it can have some mistakes. that we may need to clean up until they come back. I think we'll be fine, no. Eric has some very sticky brakes and what I mean is my stickiness is aggressive, they make some noise so it was 3500 rpm. We don't want to go too far. I'm doing about 20% throttle here and it sounds amazing so I have a red light on and I'm downshifting to make sure I can brake the engine. as much as possible just to give the engine a little bit more of that training, that initial training that it needs and it just sounds so good.
I wish I could go over 4000 rpm when that turns it into an essentially rotary boost car everything shifts to the side and that door I'm driving a piece of history now I have to thank a lot of people for this project now first and foremost I have to thank Eric because without him I obviously wouldn't be able to work on a A car like this is definitely a bucket list thing for me, but I also have to thank Jared and Jared was always the MVP, that guy didn't know how to work on these things either, but I thought two minds are better than one and we figured it out, we had no extra parts, no loose screws, everything was back where it should be and I would also like to thank Aldi for providing the motor.
I would also like to thank Advance. Auto Parts for the little parts we had to buy trying to thank Lake County Euros because they had a ton of things ordered directly from Germain when we couldn't find them anywhere else and last but not least Auto Tempest. Because they also donated so much, you could probably buy one of these cars with the Salvage option for that price and they are donating it to cancer research, so a big thank you to everyone who helped with this project. It's fantastic. I'm very happy. that this happened I think that's it for this test drive let's give him Erica's car like I don't want I want I want one of these I want one so much okay, so he's here I thought you'd give me a little more time, Dude, I couldn't wait to get here.
How long has it been since you drove this bar on June 3rd of last year? Well, not that long, so 11 months is coming up. Wow, okay, it's not here. very different from how you left it, except for the fact that there's a new engine back there, yeah we did that too, we did a few things, so we cleaned the intake manifold, it was really dirty inside, we replaced a bunch of other things , there are some. bearings that were bad there where we replaced all the seals, all the gaskets, obviously, fluids and filters and all that, would you like to start your car for the first time?
Yes, the air conditioning is fine and it's also recharged, so I'll have to move on. sweltering heat yeah I just tried it on a little test drive it was fantastic and I think it's ready for the time you have to go today it's eight hours 500 and some miles oh yeah so by the time you get there home you'll need it you'll think it's a try we'll break it she's my second love right yeah yeah so speaking of which, I mentioned before that Otto Tempest is donating $20,000 to a cancer research charity that's absolutely OMG anything help those people I mean I can see that insurance research never gives as much as you think you want yeah so we're definitely going to help and hopefully people will also donate what they can and you know that allows us too . doing things like this, I mean, obviously it's a labor of love, but I can see that this is what you know, this is your dream car, so I'm really, really happy that you're covering it now, it's absolutely that we've lost.
It's just that people missed going in cars together, I mean, he agrees to take a road trip together all the time, please give away our honeymoon for our wedding, but I think we'd rather have it back, let's take it sometime this year, yes, the quarantine is lifted, yes. but it'll be great to get back on the road with her and get back on the track with him and well all the good, awesome, awesome stuff so I think you guys should probably hit the road and I'm gonna I'm gonna finish this video but I'm very glad this car was in my life, thank you all for watching this and thanks again to everyone who

made

this happen.
I love this car, I want one now, but until next time. Am I the one reminding you that a cause like this and causes that really matter should be strived for every day?
