Alright, guys. This is it, behind the scenes and check this out. It's a feeder full of fresh lobsters. I guess we'll see if any of them are mad. Are you guys ready? Now, all of these are considered market size. So they weigh about a pound and a half to two pounds. So, that's about the size of our largest lobster we ate yesterday, it was 2.3 pounds, and it's considered a large lobster.
So if we're in that range, I think it's probably a pretty fair test. Man, that's a huge punch right there. Look how it gets hooked. In fact, that could break the skin. Alright, are you ready? - Yes. - GoPro is rolling. Oh boy. I think that thing is ready to be crushed. Alright, guys. I'm going to dip the lobster, bring it up, and then, wham, put my hand in there. Are you ready? - Let's do it. (dramatic music) I'm actually nervous now. I'm Coyote Peterson and I'm about to enter the Pinch Zone with a giant lobster.
Ready? - Let's do it. One two three. (dramatic music) (screams) Wow, it's actually worse this time. (screaming) That's much worse than yesterday. (screaming) - Did he catch you? - Wow, oh yeah, you got me right. Oh man, my hand is shaking. Wow, that's a big difference from yesterday. Ah, man. - Oh yeah. - Oh my God. He definitely didn't break any bones. Alright, let's try the ripper claw. Are you ready? (dramatic music) One, two, three (screaming) Wow, that's a lot sharper. (screaming) Okay, no, it's focused. Well, this is definitely very different from the lobsters we had yesterday, 100%.
Yes, that ripper claw is stuck in my hand. Check it out. (screaming) - How does the pressure feel? - It's pretty much the same as Dungeness crab, I'd say. But it's much sharper. And every time he tries to move my hand a little bit, he blocks it harder. Alright, maybe if he left it in the water, they would come off? - Do you think it has gone through your skin? - Oh, yes, maybe. It's hard to know. There are a lot of tiny teeth, the jagged edges digging in. (screaming) Yeah, the back of my hand sure hurts.
You can see that. (screaming) I'm trying to get my hand out. It's locked in there. I can't actually remove my hand. I'm going to have to submerge it in water. One two three. Let it go, let it go, let it go. (screaming) He's pinching harder. (screaming) Wow. Wow, okay, well that was a big difference from yesterday. Look at the prints on my hand and a couple of little blood blister type spots where he actually got blocked. Oh! I can feel my hand swell a little. Well, I'd say it was a success. Much more powerful than the lobsters we were working with yesterday, without a doubt.
That's a much more powerful pinch. But a lobster of this size, probably around two pounds, was not capable of breaking the skin or breaking the bone. - So do we know why this lobster decided to pinch harder and the ones we caught didn't? - Well, my guess is that this water is significantly colder than the water where we ate our lobsters. Now... - Oh, wow. - Do you feel how cold it is? - Much more cold. -That is very representative of the water temperature that would be in the ocean basin, where these crustaceans live. It was also very dark here.
We went in and turned it on. And they usually don't have these lights on. So the lobster feels as if it were completely in its natural environment. And I'll tell you something that, in the back of his mind, Andy may also know: that he and all of his friends could be next on the plate. But the good news for this lobster is that we will buy it and release it back into the wild. Well guys, I think we've figured it out. All you have to do is find an angry lobster and you'll get your hand pinched.
Court. I'm Coyote Peterson. Be brave. You're going to continue being wild. See you on the next adventure. When it comes to this animal's powerful pinch, what I learned is that lobsters are not necessarily prone to pinching themselves, especially once they have been pulled from the depths of the ocean. With that in mind, though, if you come across an angry lobster like Andy, the power behind those claws is pretty impressive. And I can say with confidence that a lobster weighing more than two pounds could probably break its bone. So if you drive one, I highly recommend staying away from those flat tires.
Alright, guys. This is the moment we have all been waiting for. Let's return the lobsters to the wild. I'll do it one at a time. The first to be freed will be little Lucy. Let me take the elastic band off of her crushing claw. Here we go. And I will place it deeper into the water. If I could save every lobster from the fate of a plate, you better believe I would. However, lobster fishing is an incredibly important part of Maine's economy. And while many of these strange-looking crustaceans are frequently caught for human consumption, it's important to remember that lobstermen are, first and foremost, conservationists.
And it is the management and preservation of this species that keeps the industry alive.
