More Interesting Facts About,

our albino garter snake gave birth...

This is twiggy. She's the garter snake here that I've had the longest. it's a new home guys it's the same thing just clean and in a slightly different position it doesn't smell like us anymore here are a couple baby bins i'll set up for the garter snakes and they slide right on a shelf for babies I'll show you after this though I use aspen fibers for adult snakes which I tend to use or prefer paper towels as bedding not only because it fits snug so it's easy for the babies to clean but you can also monitor their dr oppings a little better and i can feed them a little easier because since they are small and a little nervous they slide all over the place i just take the food and drop it or put it on the paper towel and i can feed them with tweezers and then if they take it off the tweezers it's ok if they drag it into the substrate it won't stick to anything because it's just paper towels so they make it a little easier for baby snakes to feed but when it gets older r i would recommend they switch to aspen fibers i also add rocks in the baby enclosures because then as they shed they can rub against the side of the rock and the rough texture will help the shed skin to come off immediately and then let's have water dishes of course and to enrich some leafy stuff some twigs just stuff to climb on because garter snakes love to explore and this foliage also makes them feel a little bit more secure in their new environment so this is the type of habitats i am going to have put together more than just these two of course but i will put several in each because they actually eat better when housed with their siblings instead of being housed alone now for the fun part where we can add the little babies in their new little enclosures see what they think where you gonna go yeah behind the cave they usually go behind the cave now that we have a couple of the baby enclosures It's set up let's put them on the shelf here's the baby snake shelf the top half is a bunch of bull snakes we just recently hatched those are Mr. and Mrs.

Wilson's babies Cheyenne of course thinks that she's part of the conversation and the bottom three slots are what we're going to use for the garters because as you see when I slide these in there's a little gap right above where the container slides in and that would be just enough for her to garter snakes scurry but the bottom shelf and this happens with a lot of shelves the bottom shelf has the least amount t of a gap because the weight is pushing down on this shelf and this fits nice and flush so it doesn't There's a chance they'll escape, wow, can you believe it? 29 babies that's amazing all from one mom now she was big but we ain't waiting 29 that's crazy the babies are ensconced in their little mini baby enclosures for now and that's where they will stay communally until they go to their new homes we will offer food to these boys in about a week because it takes about that they crave to absorb the remaining yolk inside their bodies so they have no interest in food until it is absorbed and then once they are eating regularly either worms, mouse tails, legs or pieces of fish then they will be ready for their new homes, there is a little waiting list for these guys but due to the number of babies Fatness had I think if she is on the waiting list right now it should be free if we have any extras after we go through our wait list i will put them in the available reptiles tab on our website which is snaked only iscovery.com, so if you're interested in an albino garter snake, keep an eye on that page on the website.

Garter snakes are one of the most underrated snake species out there in the pet world, I think they make great pet snakes because they are so curious, they eat almost anything, they don't get very big and they come in all kinds of colors, not to mention you can house them together like we do behind us you can house not only the same species of garter snake together but different species in the same enclosure, if you do this make sure you only house the same sex in the enclosure same enclosure because you don't want accidental claws from baby snakes, I mean if you want to breed garter snakes go for it, but if you're housing different species together like we do, we definitely recommend housing the genders or sexes separately because if you end up with hybrid babies , sometimes those are sterile. her the babies themselves are sterile or if the mother becomes pregnant and develops babies she goes through the whole process which is very labor intensive for the snake and then she gives birth to stillborn babies which sometimes happens with snakes too hybrids, so we recommend against hybridizing garter snakes because of those problems you can get with neutering, but again by housing them together, we've found that doing so with snakes makes them calmer, makes them easier to handle, makes them better to eat and I think it's all due to the fact that they're just used to having other beings around them, they're not completely isolated from everything else, both snakes and humans, having them together actually um we add the side california red in the tank and when we first got her she was a spaz she would musky she would hit us she would constantly be defensive and turn away when we tried to cuddle rla and after her quarantine that's why she was housed on her own after quarantine we added her to the group of ladies in the tank behind me and in a couple weeks she calmed down now we can handle her and she doesn't hit her punch no more musk is fantastic and is a good eater now i also think the main reason garter snakes get so calm in their communal home is because they are constantly rubbing against each other like in the rest area or wherever it is inside the tank and just get used to that constant contact and therefore when a human touches them, it's not as important anymore.
The only downside to garter snakes is that yes, they can get a bit musky, but with regular handling, they calm down again. Babies can also be very restless. at first you have to be patient with them as they get older they usually slow down as this one is a really good size to handle right now but overall they are amazing pet snakes so if you are looking for something unique to add to your collection. ur not just looking for a starter or a good beginner snake, we recommend garter snakes. One very good thing about garter snakes is that they give birth live.
There are no eggs involved. Around 70 of the snakes lay eggs and the remaining 30 give life. birth like the garters well it's been a couple weeks since the babies were born so I thought I'd give them a little update basically now I'm just trying to get them to eat their first meals and once they do I move them into this bin and these are my babies they are eating and ready they will be ready first for their new homes and their food i have been offering them are bits of worms i am also giving them mice paws and tails you know when you buy a bag of lint or pinkies there are always those bits in the bottom of the bag these guys love to eat they will eat the first meal come on looks tasty babies like how the worms move it catches their eye they love how they smell so this is a great baby food for garter snakes worms aren't a complete diet though so that's why i try to get them to eat other things too oh look at you raving your little boy dream baby go put it down that's all sweetie there it goes first mail ok now that you've eaten you can come in here. promo good job mate so thats basically what im doing with the remaining babies until they all eat and then since they eat regularly they go to their new homes and we go check on the runt though the runt is here this It has not eaten.
It's the first meal yet, but look, it looks great. I don't fill the water dish every day because sometimes it gets this corner like somehow in the water dish it absorbs everything and I don't want the humidity to get too high. so i fill it up every other day hey mate i also feed it after the water dish has dried up because sometimes that makes it more likely they will eat their food if they get a little thirsty so let's see if the little rough eats, hey buddy. I'll be back I'd love for you to want to eat oh you're so small look look at how small it is oh my gosh okay let's feed you this this would be the perfect size for you come on can you eat it? oh you got it sorry oh my gosh yeah great go get it.
Ok the little dwarf is eating that's very exciting good job little buddy I'm proud of you in that case he might have a good chance because he already pooped once so that shows things are happening Through my camera, I don't want to focus on him because he's very small and he's eating. That's great now. I know many of you will of course be interested in the race. I'm only giving away for free to a good home, but I already have a home. I lined up for him, so I'm sorry, but I promise he'll be taken good care of in his new home.
Sorry I'm trying to focus on him but you're so small my phone doesn't want to. Focus on you but that's great to see oh I'm so glad he's eating fantastic and it was his first meal anyway. Wish us. Too bad feeding 29 garter snakes plus 18 bull snakes and we have seven 27 more bull snakes hatching in the next few weeks, wish us luck and see you next time.
