NEW Nissan GT-R Nismo Review: Time's Up For Godzilla | 4K

Jun 08, 2021
This is the 2021 GTR Nismo, a car that distills everything Nissan has learned about performance over the years into what could be the ultimate supercar. This has evolved to be faster and more aggressive. It seems that patience, dedication and

time

have allowed Nissan to perfect the gtr recipe, except. I'm not really sure I buy all that because it's been 14 years, a decade and a half since the r35 gtr was first released and in that

time

, what's changed is that it still uses the same 3.8 liter twin turbo V6 and this. it still makes 600 horsepower which is exactly the same as the previous gtr

nismo

don't get me wrong those are impressive numbers but the game has moved on it's a good car on paper but on paper other cars are even better, almost. it feels like the r35 is stuck in the past yes

nissan

has progressed but not in the obvious places other than using the same engine it essentially still uses the same transmission, same all wheel drive system, same differentials, same chassis and pretty much the same bodywork on first impressions feels like a dinosaur a relic stuck in time but even relics can be fast it's appropriately fast though it's wrapping around this car you put the pedal to the metal and it just takes off with so much aggression there's a reason why this car is called

godzilla

omg it is fast there is a significant change for this car and that is that the turbos are now the same turbos that

nissan

used in their gt3 race car, they are very similar to the terrible old ones but these They have one less vein in each one. of the turbos, which means there is less mass and therefore less inertia and that means it spins faster than before, it is more responsive, don't get me wrong, although it doesn't feel naturally aspirated or anything, but it does. feels tremendously fast, esp.

At around 4000rpm when everything comes to life it's a bit like lighting a fuse on a stick of dynamite, you step on the accelerator, wait and then all hell breaks loose where you get the biggest thrill is accelerating out of low speed corners. You just sit back in your seat and get this surge of acceleration, torque and power. It's really exciting to drive but I have to be honest with you the r35 gtrs even the standard edition cars have always been wildly fast so I'm sitting here wondering what's changed where's the revolution where's the evolution it almost feels like if the gtr was still but not completely still you see that nissan follows the japanese theory of kaizen which means they apply small but continuous changes in their pursuit of perfection and we have sent the bejesus to this gtr nism starting with incredibly carbon ceramic brakes for the first time the gtr

nismo

has carbon brakes and apparently these are the largest discs ever fitted to a japanese car the wheels are also lighter than ever they save a whopping five grams over the previous wheels you also get a carbon fiber roof which reduces the center of gravity.

You also get a new suspension because the car is lighter, the suspension doesn't have to be suspended as much, plus there is a new algorithm for the gearbox so it now changes gears 0.15 seconds faster than the previous gearbox, There's also more downforce than ever. You may have noticed that huge rear spoiler which now works in conjunction with these vents over the front wheel arch to provide six kilograms more of downforce. Nismo also gets a lot of carbon, none of which comes cheap of course, carbon seats, more than six and a half large carbon splitters, three large carbon roofs, two large carbon spoilers and a trunk lid of carbon, two thousand pounds, now considering that you can buy a used r35. gtr or a trailer too for around thirty to forty thousand pounds guess how much this one costs no no 180,000 pounds.

Wow, I must say the interior of the r35 is also a bit basic and maybe needs a bit of that. Kaizen because it's not up to par, even something as basic as a BMW One Series at a quarter of the price has a much better interior than this, but there are a couple of things I like: This multifunction display has always been a one of my favorite things about the r35 gtr. It works really well, looks really cool and shows you all this almost useless information that you don't really need, but you enjoy seeing things like boost pressure, oil temperature, all these little things. things that make you feel like you're inside a video game.

I also like the fact that it's not trying to be hyper-modern for the sake of it. You have a simple design for your infotainment screen. You have a volume knob. a physical volume knob and you also have analog gauges, it's all a bit reassuringly old school and I like that it's like putting on your favorite old jumper or a pair of fuzzy slippers, you get that nice warm feeling of nostalgia from being inside this car. Gtr is often criticized for being a bit like a PlayStation car for not being particularly involved, but I think that's unfair because, especially compared to modern cars, this is a hugely mechanical feeling, whether it's that reassuring sound that comes listen when you start it up, the sound of the terrible exhaust chugging the differentials screeching beneath you there's a mechanical symphony to this car that's refreshingly old school, it almost feels a little steampunk in a way, but Even though it's old, it's still new school, fast, that tiny V6 under the hood.
It helps make it feel as fast as cars with more power. Nissan doesn't mention a 0-60 time, but it's well under 3 seconds. Top speed is only 186 miles per hour, but the way it covers ground thanks in large part to that. The all wheel drive system is amazing and you have to give Nissan credit for sticking with the four wheel drive system because in the old days when everyone else was sticking to rear wheel drive, Nissan doubled down and said no. We need all-wheel drive for traction and they have mastered it, they are one of the best at this, sure the game has moved on a bit and manufacturers are now developing switchable all-wheel drive systems that can send all the power to the rear wheel, but When you want to have some fun, believe me when I tell you that you can have fun in the GTR too, you can drive this car almost however you want, chat on a straight, slam on the brakes, turn it. and then let the car fix itself in the corners and then take it out of the corners or perfect it in the corners, move the rear end and play with it, this car is literally so flexible that it does whatever you want, it's sensational and Most importantly, it's always exciting to drive a GTR with your eyes on the stems, your senses on high alert, your adrenaline pumping, giving the car your full attention and respect, that firm but tolerable suspension and lightning-quick steering.
They make it relentlessly immersive, which is more than can be said for that. many of its modern rivals perhaps it's that kaizen that makes the new gtr nismo so special the way all those individual components come together to deliver a fascinating driving experience it's that incredible power that joy in the corners that wild amount Of traction that comes out of Ben is completely married to this elaborate sense of mechanical theater that makes this so fascinating in many ways, the GTR has fallen behind, it has not taken the great leaps forward that many of its rivals have taken, There have not been major increases in power, no. massive design changes in many ways, it feels like it's stuck in the past, but maybe that works in its favor, the industry now offers many cars that perhaps feel too modern and lack an inherent sense of theater to the refuse to take those big leaps forward.
Gtr nism remains frozen in time and yet offers a vivid impression of what a supercar should feel like, while it's true that standing still is the quickest way to go backwards in an ever-changing world, perhaps that's not true today. It's so bad where we live. uncertain present desperately opposed to what some of us perceive as an undesirable future, so perhaps it's a blessing that with the GTR we still have the opportunity to learn something from the icons of the past.
