NEW BMW M2 Competition Review 2019 *Road Test

Jun 10, 2021
Hey guys, behind me, I have the new BMW m2 Competition. I finally have one in my hands thanks to Tony Lewis and Barry BMW. Tony's first customer for the m2 Competition, a guy called Mark, contacted Tony and told him he could take the brand from him. new baby out for a spin I'm finally in a BMW m2

competition

and I couldn't be happier or more excited. I think we should start with the differences between this

competition

em-to and the outgoing m2 that is no longer in production, the biggest difference for me is what's under the hood, now that we've moved on from the 55, which is an engine fantastic, it was on cars like the m135i in many of the three five variants and the m2 had a slightly tweaked version of that.

The engine was brilliant, made a great sound, ran well, but it was never a proper M engine. What we have in the m2 competition is the s 55 lump found in cars like the current FTE m3 and m4, CS variants etc, so it is a suitable engine. The M engine is quoted at 410bhp in this car, but I know people who have already done m2 competitions and are actually getting more like 450bhp, which is a similar figure to the m3 and m4, so I'm thinking that was not being. EE is just a conservative protein figure. I'm thinking it was BMW who quoted that figure to avoid putting it on Stowe's m3 and m4 and therefore making them still attractive at £15-20k more expensive because they know this car and the UK base. in manual without options it's just under 50 which value and in fact this car only sells for around eighteen hundred quid more spec for spec than the old m2 and when you consider what you get in this car compared to the old m2, it's amazing, apart from the s 55 motor on the side it has the beautiful carbon strut brakes which again are found on the m3 and m4 and which to me is worth eighteen hundred quid on its own, it looks good and obviously does something functional, it also strengthens the front part.

More Interesting Facts About,

Ultimately that gives the whole chassis more torsional rigidity and therefore the front of the car feels much better but we'll talk about that a little later outside of the s55 engine the other major improvements are these seats that I'm sitting in, like this which are The proper M seats again from the m3 and m4 are very supportive, lighter and once again look good, you know the seats that really should have been in the original m2 are fantastic, I'm really a big fan of them, other external things, the rear view mirrors m proper, so they have two hinges instead of just one at the bottom that is found on all normal BMWs and, if the stock cars, for example, inside, we still have the moldings raw carbon that are standard on the m2 competition and were on the normal m2 and the m2 LCI, but here we have a beautiful Alcantara with orange stitching and like the door cards, which is very reminiscent of the BMW 1m, very, very It's similar, it looks fantastic and in this sunset orange car it really highlights the cabin, you know, it looks great, I mean the seats, the door cards, everything comes to life in the otherwise interior , it's quite dark and you know, typically German, now this one in particular.

The car is a DCT equipped car, so it has the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, a very familiar box that has been around again. You know, the f80 m3 m4 since it was launched does a very good job and the software mapping on this particular one is the best I have found, especially for normal driving, when you have it in a relaxed driving mode, it performs very automatic tasks well, which brings me to my next point, in the end you have much more adjustability. For the Competition there is more setup, so I can adjust how quickly I want the gears to shift, just like you can do in any other proper m-car.

I can adjust how the steering feels. I can adjust my exhaust valves. I can adjust my answer Thoreau, everything. So the only thing you can't do on the m2 competition is have adjustable or adaptive suspension, so it's still a fixed spring rate or a passive setup if you want, it feels great, it's stiff. I want to understand the negatives. out of the way because it's something a lot of people are talking about and the first big negative I guess is the lack of sound, it's definitely quieter here than the normal m2 and the reason for this is unfortunately the timing of the launch of the La m2 competition was at the same time that these are new emissions laws, PPF filters or whatever, so right before launching this car and putting it on the market, they had to modify the exhaust at the last minute and change a few things and Put this new filter on and that has really dulled the sound of the s55, it is an engine that some people love and some people hate, but on the competition platform in the m3 and m4 it is very loud, very crackly, it has quite a bit of character.
While on this it is very quiet and muffled, but it still sounds like a very good sixth to me. I mean, they could be more solid and externally there's not as much of it as you've probably already seen in some of the flyby shots, but it's not. bad and in a matter of no time companies like Venus are going to make an exhaust that fits this car, meets all the regulations and therefore gives this car the sound it perhaps deserves. Now I pressed my specific m1 button on the steering wheel again, you didn't get these buttons and the normal m2, so I programmed it to the fas

gearbox, setting the sports exhaust, light steering because I think it's too heavy on sports and sports applause and let's listen. to what this car sounds like and how it performs and I'm moving on, but I want to remind you that this is a new car, it's had 150 miles on it, so I'm not going to take it over four and a half or 5,000 revs and I'm not going to abuse this car. because it doesn't belong to me and I don't want to put you in danger, but let's listen and you can make your own decision because honestly, I think it sounds pretty decent, it's just really really good, I mean, it feels instantly, it feels ten percent faster than a normal engine and that without me going up too much in the rev range.
Let's talk about the power delivery of this s55 because to me it is as sweet as they made it at CES. The models have gotten rid of that horrible peak torque right in the middle that used to break traction and make the m3 and m4 feel like holy peaks. This one, although it's very linear, you can press the accelerator and the power comes and I'm just taking it to five and at five you can really feel it pull now, my friend marks, Tim's manager marks 150, he has one of these in competitions If you've done 6,000 kilometers on yours and last night you informed me that once you get past five it really takes off so all the power is on top so it's a very nice feeling in that sense which is great and exactly what you want in a small sports car.
It's just brilliant the way it handles the

and generally the final suspension. The setup is brilliant at slower speeds, it feels a little stiff, a little annoying and a little uncomfortable when you start pushing, it breaks down on the ride and suddenly it becomes plush and it all makes sense. I have to say that this is it. just a baby m4 of yours for the longest time for me, this is a baby m3 CS and that's the biggest compliment I could give this car, it's on the fantastic Michelin Pilot supercar, but really the only thing I've been thinking about is how it would feel. like on a day like today on the cut tips it would be just amazing, it really would, it also has new wheels.
I forgot to mention that there are new designs. I'm not sure if I like them or not. I think I prefer the normal one. Where was it in the m2? But I might like them. This one also has the upgraded brake package. Not only do these brakes feel incredible when you see their size, it's really no surprise because they are monstrous, but the caliper is about a millimeter long. on either side to sit behind and inside the 19-inch alloy or hear that look. Sorry, there are always people who hate them because you know every time a new M car comes out, people weigh the programmed for whatever reason and Yes, this one was unfortunate.
You know he was born at the wrong time in terms of all these b

cast rules and you know they had to override some things with him, but he's brilliant the way he is right now. once you want someone like Remus to fix your exhaust, this car would be just a dream, it really is, it feels, it feels great, it feels organic, it feels brilliant, I just think it's amazing, I really do, I'm really impressed with this car. and I'm not just saying that and this is, you know, driving it 7/10, I can't drive it hard because it's not broken in and it's not my car and I promise Tony that they will hide in one piece because I'm sure that Mark wouldn't be too happy if I put it in a hedge, but at the speeds I've driven today, I really felt this car come to life last night when I picked it up and it was wet and rainy.
New tires, felt great, oh wow, drove it today. The children came out beautiful. The asphalt cleans the tires a bit and suggests that this car also has a 6-speed manual option and that to me is very tempting because how many suitable? Sports cars offer a manual gearbox these days, like Caymans and Boxers, but they have those 4 pots, like I'm talking about 6 pot manual rear drive that sets you up. Maybe I'm missing it, but for 50 grand you can't, you just can't go wrong. I mean, what else is on the market for £50,000? Yes, will you wait for something like that?
You're hitting 55 grand. I know with the DCT and all the bells and whistles, but still at £55,000 a card, this performance is insane, absolutely insane. I love the Slavs that we will pick up in this car on a regular em twin. It's about CES because in normal. entering M Falls, especially the ones in the competition package, you're pretty much anywhere on a wet day, I'm a little afraid to accelerate mid-corner because it just wants to bite you all the time, which is exciting, but while in this you can actually speed up. You know the first inch of travel on the floral only gives you 10 to 15% power, which is what you want, you want to be able to feel like you don't want it to only give you 50%. of power, when you touch the accelerator, it goes through the corners.
I mean my M 140 as it is is fantastic, it's a brilliant car, but there is one thing that suffers when you start really pushing: it rolls even with the new one. built on suspension and lowered etc. That car is a bit heavy, where is this one? it just sits, it feels like a proper sports car, a proper piece of equipment Tony mentioned to me that he has a Furnham competition assignment, let me put up his number, you know, he'll probably think I'm calling to say I crashed the car, hey, Joe, hey, Tony, how's it going? Yeah, yeah, I'm fine.
I thought you'd be shitting on me. bring maybe you think you're not putting a bus or something, it's a good thing, it's a good thing for me. I have a bit of a sucker for this car and it's weird because I didn't do it. I think I would do it today because I couldn't push it properly but from what I've experienced it's kind of a 7/10 and below 5000 rpm it's really mind blowing this I think is a mini tell me yes it's just It's a CS4 baby for almost half the money. I honestly think he's a good friend.
I'm very impressed with him and I seem to remember you mentioning something the other day about you having a secret assignment up your sleeve that you could potentially leave me. I have to take you back and you're trying to keep the car. I imagine obviously after having the old in this one, well, yeah, I mean, it's going to be bittersweet because that car is just fantastic. I love it. I got to good condition, I think it's almost perfect, you know, it's fantastic every day, it's a fantastic road car, unfortunately, this is just another level, you know, it really feels in the automation, it really does and it looks, I fall in love.
This looks too, it might be a superficial love story, but it's brilliant, mate, so okay, listen when he comes tomorrow to pick up my car, yeah, we can, maybe we'll sit for a bit and look at the fingers and how many. million you're going to give me for my m14, okay buddy, sorry to bother you on a Sunday, but yeah, I'll talk soon, oh, sorry, I see you don't play well, there you go, you heard it here first. I might be ordering one of these I might really be ordering I need to go and have a look at the numbers, figures etc but what car what car well that will be the end of my first drive
