Nandy defends Rayner and dodges questions on Labour's second home ownership plans

Mar 30, 2024
Tell me about the leader and Angela Raina, the deputy leader, they are going to make statements, I think, later today and they will say that Boris Johnson was right about leveling up. You used to be the shadow equalization secretary. Do you think he was right? I think to be fair to Boris Johnson, of whom I am no fan, what he did in 2019 was recognised: in much of the country, like here in Wigan, the contribution we have to make has been dismissed for too long and that for many people geography is Destiny, the problem is what happened then, that he did absolutely nothing about it and what we announce today is that we will extend and hand over power to all parts of the country. not just some, so that people can truly be in charge of their own destiny and start rebuilding this country again, okay, let me talk about housing, so can I?

Are you saying you're going to crack down on property owners?

s? The elections are going to be a little complicated given what is happening with Angela Raino, aren't they? And the fact that the police want to conduct a deeper investigation into her council house that she bought. Angela has been clear that that was her house and she has collected taxes. and she gave legal advice and issued a very strong statement, but no crime was committed; in fact, she said this was baseless and slanderous. What we are proposing around

s and particularly around Airbnb is that we should tilt the balance of power.

More Interesting Facts About,

nandy defends rayner and dodges questions on labour s second home ownership plans...

Back to first time buyers and people who own their own home to live in, too many people are excluded from home

ownership

at the moment, an entire generation is effectively being kept off the housing ladder and we want to make sure that is much easier for them to be able to do it. buy your own home and have that forever family home that most people desperately want and what about those who have those second homes to be their pension, let's say to take some of the burden off the government and the cost? of the massive cost of pensions in this country, what would you say to them right now?
nandy defends rayner and dodges questions on labour s second home ownership plans
What we are seeing because of the Liz truss experiment that crashed the economy and sent mortgages through the roof many of those people have now found themselves. that that doesn't pay, it doesn't help contribute to your pension and we are seeing many of those landlords having to sell which is putting real pressure on the B toet market and the private rental sector which is looking more and more like the Wild West. We think the government should act in two ways: we think they should try to ensure that there is much more affordable housing by making housing available, and we have set out

plans

to achieve this, but we also think that there should be much greater regulation of the private sector rent so that people have the protection they deserve not only be subject to eviction without cause with a few weeks notice uh the right to make modifications to their own home the right to have repairs done in a decent time these are all the things the government has repeatedly promised they didn't deliver on and if they don't they will so if you have a second home beware if Labor are in charge no it's not about chasing people it's try to have a fair system where everyone has a chance to get ahead right now we have a whole generation of young people who are really struggling, they are paying very, very high rents, not just in their 20s like I did myself, but also those in their 30s and family with no real security, you know, if you get evicted from a private rented flat in London or Manchester with young children, it's not just a matter of finding somewhere else to live, which is difficult, and Finding a new home also means taking your children out of school. and all the disruption that that entails with child care and everything else, we believe that people deserve proper rights, we believe that everyone deserves a chance at home

ownership

and that's why we are determined to prioritize many, not only a few.

Well, what would happen then if you had a second home and the labor was in charge, well, we, our

plans

are to make it much easier for people to buy their own homes, thus ending the system where the balance is leans towards yes, with respect, my question is what would happen. to those who have a second home under a good Labor government, of course, people who have a second home have the right to buy a second home and keep it, but one of the things that happened in the 1980s under Margaret Thatcher was that the system was changed so that it is actually much cheaper angelaa benefited from it a second house well Angela Rena bought bought a house under the right to buy which was different but the government changed the rules so if you want to borrow to buy one Second, renting it is cheaper than borrowing to buy your own family home and we believe that this is wrong and that changes can be made to the system so that it is cheaper for people to rent it. borrow, like Canada has done, like other countries have done consistently, okay, so people can get on that housing ladder, what are you going to do with the triple lock?
What are you going to do with the triple pension lock? We are committed to maintaining the Triple Pension Lock, we believe it is a commitment that this government made with pensioners and they have planned accordingly. If you've worked hard your whole life and you've paid it forward and you've done the right thing, then we think. that you shouldn't have to grow old for fear of the lack of dignity and warmth that many people feel in it, so that's a commitment we've made, we hope the government does the same, okay? H, and what happens to T's water? you do well with them.
I have had constant problems with water companies as a constituency MP, but I have also dealt with T water and we have had serious problems there with lack of investment. Wastewater is pumped into our rivers and seas. What we want the government to do is to put an end to this ongoing hesitancy and delay. They have said they will consult on a ban on water company bosses receiving bonuses. If they violate their environmental regulations, we don't understand why the hell you would need to do that. consult on that now is the time to give real powers to the regulator to be able to do that good.
See you, thank you very much for taking the time, I always appreciate it.
