Thanks to the nationalization of his cult during the Hellenic period, Dionysus (or Bacchus, as he was better known at the time) was fixed into the image we know today, leaving most of his terrifying features in the past. But he does a wonderful job of explaining the remaining gestures and traits of the current image of him. Dionysus probably had one of the most radical transformations of the entire pantheon. And even if the watered down version we know is largely peaceful, he has never completely lost the traits of the ancient god of death and madness as he was worshiped.
