Massive Tesla Road Trip Across the USA in the Model 3 Performance!

Jun 04, 2021
Hello and welcome to off-spec driving. This is part 2 of our cross-country

road

trip

. This is the fun part. This is when we actually get in the car and start driving from here in North Carolina across the country, ending in California. then we'll be back here with the

performance

of the Model 3 so buckle up and let's hope we have a great Drive now if you haven't seen our previous video yet, the first part of this series definitely goes through our planning and what we thought about what I think when I go on

road

trip

s, but I have the camera gear packed, some GoPros charging, and one of the hardest things is keeping all the batteries running and charging to film these road trips, it's all up to par.

I've got all my camera gear packed and stuff here, the car, I'm going to go get it, it's on the other side of the facility, so let's run over there, grab the

model

three, get some stuff and hit the road, so I already packed. for two weeks 14 days if I stay longer I can always do the laundry. I have the DJI drone, the DJI Ronin, some cables, my loot cycle, although I need to fix this so I can take out the loot cycle and then more easily and some extra clothes. and something like a travel bag with some things.

More Interesting Facts About,

massive tesla road trip across the usa in the model 3 performance...

I'll put the rest of the camera equipment in there and that will leave the inside free. We're running like seven hours late to start even though we're running a little late. For starters, there's no rush here. CES will last four days. I'm just going to be cruising, we're not going to do this trip like a canyon, it's going to be a nice relaxing trip around the country, we won't be racing at all if I finish. I'll meet someone at the supercharger, a lot of people have already reached out. I'll be meeting our off-spec followers, which is really cool, guys, they even watch us enough to know we're all clean.

It is certainly necessary. a vacuum cleaner, oh wait, it should open the front trunk. Do I need to put the chat mode adapter in the front so it can go there? It will be nice to have, now that the interior is good again. I'll probably vacuum the inside. the trip, if I can find a touchless wash, I will certainly use it because this thing desperately needs a wash El Paso Texas, that's where we want to go, let's think, let's look, it should say what our route will be so it will take us to Burlington and then to Charlotte and down, so we're going down this lower route.
massive tesla road trip across the usa in the model 3 performance
I had actually never done the superchargers on a Tesla on this route before doing it Lana, but nothing west of Atlanta on the southern route. So this will all be new to me and very exciting. She says we will reach there. It will take a long time, thirty-three hours. I don't know where we'll stay, but if we can get to Charlotte tonight, that would be it. pretty good, but we'll see how we feel, so first stop in Burlington will hit 7%, let's see there's Henderson on the way, tons of backup options, yes Burlington is one of our only superchargers in North Carolina, but now it's actually no one uses it because Greensboro, Raleigh and Cary have chargers, but that's fine with me, it maxes out at 120 kilowatts.
We're going to Burlington and leaving so you can see what we're working with. It started raining and So that doesn't really mean anything, it's just a little annoying, it also means a little less efficiency, so when we would have gotten to Burlington at 7 percent now it could go down to 3 percent because I think I'm definitely going to go ahead. with the plant that wants to get food here in Henderson you can see it's exactly along the road you can also stop and it's right next to the road it's pouring rain so let's navigate there and I need to focus on the road because in these recent versions of autopilot in the rain, but you always have to focus on the road on autopilot because it's not what I intended there, but it tends to cut out, sometimes it gets scared, so you know the campus becomes on a blanket, it's a relatively recent occurrence, but it definitely happens. on the wheel, eyes on the road, any autopilot II, cruising on the way to Henderson, but every time I rewatch our videos, I swear, every time I take a road trip it's pouring rain, like it's a beautiful sunny day. at the track, as soon as I get in the car, put the cameras on, we hit the road, it started raining and now it's pouring rain, so I don't know what that means.
I don't think it means anything other than that I choose Bad Timing on the road trip, but let's hope this is just a today thing and we have sunny skies for the rest of the trip because, I mean, it doesn't affect anything, it's just a little annoying to have than to move it away and Here we go, just a few miles from the Henderson Supercharger, we're preconditioning. I don't think the battery is too cold, but it's good to know that it's going to warm up. I don't think there are many people there at the moment. I couldn't imagine, yeah, five of the eight positions available, so we will definitely have an open cabinet.
Get maximum speeds. I'm going to run and get food as soon as I'm done. Let's hit back. I didn't set out first. Supercharged. On the trip we're at 33%, so I'm going to run in, we're sharing because everything is freezing here, so I'm going to go talk to those guys so they can even get an open cabinet. Okay, so we're here in the sheets. They're having a car competition, which is cool. I went and talked to the guys and said, "Let's do a drag race and oh my God, we wouldn't win, so they liked the Tesla thing they did." I didn't realize locking supercharger points was kind of a thing, so they were cool, everyone is revving their engines.
I'm going to go see if we can rest in two, just for fun, I bought a bunch of snacks on water boats. of things we're going to go to Burlington now, so let's look here, we're pretty good to go to Burlington, we would have done it anyway, trip planners are very conservative, so I think we should probably get out because we're on our way. my own cabinet gets a hundred kilowatts. I mean, those aren't really bad speeds, so let's hit the road, this is weird, screens crashing while super charging. I've seen this a couple of times, not sure why it only happens while super charging. a software thing, okay we're here in Burlington, let's bring this thing to life now, this is one of the OG superchargers that I've loaded here for years and years before there were other superchargers in the area, this was the unique now that I have a lot and while we are here at the supercharger, there are a few things I would like to point out.
The first is that every time we post a road trip video, we have battles in the comments that gas cars are better and I will never do that. I have ever bought an electric car, this is what there is no doubt that today a gasoline-powered vehicle is faster to travel very long distances, however, I would say that during the week an electric car is faster to 99% of the people who drive, it's definitely not mine, but other people's. which you know, you just start every day fully charging at home or at work, it's really nice, so that's my opinion, so I travel in electric cars because I love adventure.
I think it's great. I'm certainly invested in the technology, I think. It's the future, no doubt, but it's not going to get better unless we do things like these trips to push the technology forward, for example, being here in Burlington, very old supercharger, a little worn out, I kind of went down the line, none of these stations produces full power. I'm at best, it's a hundred and two kilowatts and it's going down, it's just not cool, so you know, this is where the technology is. It was amazing a few years ago, the new version 3 superchargers are incredibly fast and I.
I'm excited to see the launch and Tesla really needs to do it ASAP, so with all that, let's plan our next stop because I'll tell you what. I really don't want to sit here for too long. I'd rather you leave. to the 150 kilowatt station, probably in Charlotte, let's look, so if we look at our planned route, you can see we're going from here. Greensboro is this way and then we'll go to Charlotte and more. I don't think we are. We'll pass the Greensboro Supercharger, it doesn't seem very long, but it's a detour of a few miles, so the next one we'll pass is the one north of Charlotte.
This is a new facility that I have not been to. yet, but we're not going that way, again, this is a pretty early installation, but it's a hundred and fifty kilowatts, it's busy now, it's very busy, but when we get there in an hour and a half, maybe even a little bit. Since it's just over eighty-six miles away, it should be pretty empty. I think it's about two miles from the highway. It seemed doable, we're not in a rush and I'd rather take the time to charge faster so it says we'll need fifteen minutes we're at 14% and we're projected to get there at sort of negative 14% so we need to charge at least 14 % and then probably a little bit more so we were only here for a short period of time and it looks like we had enough energy to get to the next charger up ahead which is Charlotte Charlotte is let's see how many miles away 97 miles we are at 50%, we should easily achieve it no, I'm sure I've said this before but everyone always asks when I travel by road, you can certainly sit here in charge and drive to maybe even Atlanta, maybe not that far, but at least the Greenville, South Carolina supercharger, but what's faster is that you'll notice now that we have 50.
Percent, the car starts to drop the load, so going from fifty to one hundred percent takes a lot longer than go from zero to fifty, so I keep the battery here on the low side, where it can charge as quickly as possible, so let's go. We're definitely wasting time because we can do it at 10 percent and yes, that's why you'll see me stop so often, it's not because you need to, it's just because it's a little faster than sitting here and doing a full load, It also keeps the trip going. A little more interesting, so let's go to Charlotte.
A little news. I booked a hotel in Greenville, South Carolina. They have a Tesla wall connector. I called ahead. I said: Hello, do you have a charger? She said what's a charger and then I said, Well, it's this. This kind of thing, if you just go out, can you put a cone there? She's like, "Okay, I'll do my best," and I'm like, "If there's a car in that place because I'm sharing, you can see pictures, none of them are marked." off and I'll be quite late. I asked him if he could block the place next to it or the next worst case scenario he would put this thing on the sidewalk and plug it in.
I mean, I have no problem doing something like, as long as the hotel says okay, that's where we're staying in Greenville, South Carolina, which is fantastic, better than I originally expected. No no problems so far on the trip we are almost in Charlotte so we have the cabinet to ourselves that table next to us was on the floor which makes me think the station wasn't working because the other car moved . We're getting pretty good speeds here at 2%, that's all we can ask for. I think this is It's going to be a great charging station and charging session I should say and then we'll go to the Windham garden which has the charger as mentioned so let's see exactly how many miles there are there, we've got quite a headwind.
I just reviewed the Windy app, great app. If you're traveling by road, it's a hundred miles, so let's get fifty-five percent of the state of charge before we leave, so as our state of charge increases, so will our charging speed in charging profiles older as before. draw one hundred and forty-five kilowatts more than 3% onwards. I've talked about this before on the newer ones that are at eleven percent and yes, we're at one hundred and forty-five kilowatts now and it could be to protect the battery. to protect the handles of the supercharger because you have to dump a ton of amps and give it so much power when the pack voltage is minimal and what would happen is the wires would get so hot that because of all those amps that after hitting like 20 25 per cent, it would reduce your charging speeds due to a hot handle, so you would have to disengage the movement and then you would go back to full speed, but it's a little cold out there, forty-six degrees F and yes, this is a session Perfect charging, you can't ask for anything better than this, it will charge enough to get to the supercharger if needed, but hopefully just the hotel for a nightly charge and you really can't ask for anything better than this.
At one hundred and forty-nine kilowatts it hit 150 for a brief second, but that's cool,I can't complain, I love it, it's so fast for those who don't follow the Tesla stuff, it's as fast as these version two superchargers can charge this. The car, version three, can put out 250 kilowatts, but it's still such new technology that there are only a couple of installations available, so this is the fastest we're likely to see during this entire trip until we get to Las Vegas and you will see here the The car thinks we can get to the hotel. I'm going to charge a little more just because why not?
Anyway, we're not in a big hurry. You can see that we have already started to decrease here. This is probably due to temperature. I think it's starting to decline from the peak to 44%, although that only received a software update so they could have gotten even more conservative either way. This isn't slow by any means but it's certainly not peak, it used to stay maxed out up to like 55% it was great back then but that was like six months ago during daylight saving time but I think Tesla was just pushing too hard the supercharging equipment, there goes a Nissan Leaf but they don't have the headlights on, hey, the perfect car to commit a crime is an Eevee because no one can hear you coming, but you can too.
We can't go very far in an old Nissan Leaf like that anyway. Yeah, let's take another five minutes or so and then we'll get out of here and we're in Greer, South Carolina, this is where BMW has their factory. 4 X 3 4 5 6 and 7, so they are larger SUVs, these are their offices here for those who don't know. I'm a huge BMW fan and I worked for the company before and this is one of the coolest facilities the factory is absolutely amazing they have a great museum and then the BMW Performance Center is right here now my biggest problem with BMW and just with the BMW group in general which includes many mini and rolls-royce motorcycles here this is the center of BMW and this is where the museum is great I love it it's a great display if you haven't been there.
My biggest problem with the BMW group is simply their lack of effort and they have definitely gone the plug-in hybrid route which I don't think is really necessary. I think we really need to focus on fully electric vehicles, yes they will anyway one day but they are very behind as are the German brands but I think Volkswagen Audi Europe will become the European leader in electrification but the time. I'll say it and the charger is right here next to these bushes. I could be completely wrong, but I crossed my fingers and they lift the cone and we have some great news to carry.
We're at our hotel in Greenville, South Carolina, they actually set up the cone. I did. Don't wait for this, they've blocked the place, so I'm going to move the cone, put the car there, charge, it's at 6%, it's 11:35 p.m. more or less I'm going to bed and I'll see you in the morning good night good morning I slept very well at night. I worked a little. It's 8.25 in the morning. The car just finished about 20 minutes ago. one hundred percent, so we shouldn't leave it there for too long, we should go in and I think I look at a map, I know I looked at a map, but I think I want to get to Dallas today, it's like 900 miles, I think that would be a great goal. stretch it until we get in the car, find the nearest Starbucks and then hit the road, well, let's say we have a hundred percent charge in century mode, let's put in El Paso doo-doo-doo-doo for those who don't They know while we wait, century mode monitors the car while it is parked.
I don't really use it often unless I'm parked in a public place, so let's look at Atlanta Birmingham, we have places in between, I figure, can we? Stretch it to Oxford, no we can't, so 237 miles. I think we could do it maybe if it wasn't 38 degrees or if we had long range rear drive we could do it but the

performance

maybe not so we'll take the cars. One tip is to go to Atlanta, but let's put these GoPros on the mounts and hit the road, okay, we're all tight and ready to rock, so alas, what Starbucks is across the street.
I know I've mentioned it before. This is not a habit. I'd like to comment on what my giant Starbucks drink is, but I'll work on it soon. I'd just like to point out why I love it. Lighten up so much. We are going 95 miles an hour with a lady in a x5. Everyone else. doing the same speed and people are tearing apart and we're literally almost in the center, it's amazing, well we're in the Atlanta supercharger. I had never been on the supercharger before. I've been to others in Atlanta. I've known this one has been around for a while, but it's kind of annoying: you have to go off the highway, back up the wrong way for like a mile and a half, and then you're stuck in traffic in the parking lot if it had long-range rear-wheel drive and It wasn't that cold even if it was this temperature, I would have just passed this one on and pushed it to the next charger.
I think it was Oxford or something that happened beyond Atlanta, so this is the case, if there is a strange design, I guess it came out ahead. positions, so let's look at one B 3 a, everyone's like I don't know what's going on, but I guess we'll take this one, here's someone else in one, what A is open, so we'll have the cabinet to ourselves. Well we are ramping up here, we drove 151 miles from a hundred to 15% which is not very good mainly due to our driving style almost 390 watt hours per mile and it looks like hopefully we will start to ramp up a little more beyond this package.
Still being a little bit cold was not a precondition, but we'll keep an eye on it and I don't know if I guess these are all versions like two. I hope I don't know that versions one isn't really round, I should say. limited version of software two, but let's go further and see what happens with El Paso. What cars will probably want us to do is do a long charge here and then stretch it, which I think we should do, let's take a look, this supercharger is right. off the highway, but it almost feels like it's right on the highway, so I think let's go to this one next, let's get enough juice to get there.
We need about 25% or so, so we'll come out around 50%. % when the car starts to slow down and yeah, for some reason we're not getting any great speeds on this one, but almost all the other cabinets are busy right now, so this is the best we're going to get, and it's actually totally fine. We had a fun little rearrangement of all the cars here so everyone can charge faster, but now we're hitting Oxford at 50% so we're starting to back off, that's actually not bad, but let's get on the road, no. time to waste. I'd love to go pretty far on this trip today, so let's get some pavement under the tires. welcome to Oxford, Alabama, cool install, superchargers running all over this nice downtown, car looks good, come on.
Go see if we are increasing the load, we are at 5% game before we run and go get some food, let's make our travel plan, so we are here in Oxford and this is our route along the i- 20 now. there is no supercharger along i-20 this one from birmingham is on this outer loop it's actually not that far out of the way if we go through the city but this is the quickest way to do it now on this route from here to Meridian. Let's look at how many miles it is because it's going to be a long charge here to avoid this, so let's look at the distance of 205 miles, we'll need a hundred percent charge to do it at this temperature at these speeds and you know, of course.
I can always drive slower, but traffic is going 70 miles an hour at least, that's how fast the trucks go, maybe 75 and it would be a little dangerous to drive slower than that, plus it's not that fun, so I guess we skip to Birmingham and take the outer road. turn around and then turn around, this will probably be faster, so let's see how many miles it is to get there. 63 miles, it's a short trip, we'll probably drink all the juice we can while we get there. and as soon as we start to slow down we believe and go to firm up in the car we went to Firehouse Subs always a great place not much though I'll have to nibble on that on autopilot as we go of course paying attention. they're 49% charged we're down to one hundred nine hundred and ten kilowatts we can easily get to the Birmingham supercharger at 20% so right now we're just wasting time let's log off let's go to Birmingham and start this journey So far Birmingham is great Alabama , this is the deep south of course, but it's a beautiful city, there's a lot of history here, so I'm told and I don't know much about it, but it seems like a cool place.
I mean, this is beautiful. the sign says Uptown, so I imagine that's the part of town we are in and that would be the center of town. I guess the other side of Uptown only makes sense, so all we really need is their electricity and we'll be out. from here, but what a nice place to be while we are doing a lot of construction. They seem to be expanding. This part of the city now from the front looks absolutely beautiful. You'll see it as we drive around here. Alright. We've gone up to a hundred and ten kilowatts, we'll be watching to see if it goes any higher, I'm not sure why it's so low, it could be that the pack is still a little cold or the cabinet is a little messed up, but now.
There are more cars that just showed up, like three arrived at the same time, so we're lucky there's no one parked next to us, but there's no chance of moving here, so one hundred and ten kilowatts is still pretty fast, let's see our plan travel in the future. I think this was the charger he wanted us to extend to, so the route planner is correct. Let's see how many miles it is. There's really no way unless we press Continue Travel, so 145 miles we'll need like a 60% charge from here. Well, I just completed a call, so it was perfect timing, we're at 78% charged, the car will go up to 14.
I guess we have enough range to go even a little higher speed, so let's tune out. Get going and, um, I love road trips, it's my favorite thing to do, it's a lot. If you watch any of our road trip videos up to this point, you know that I have a really hard time pronouncing city names and you know there are so many different cities. You know whatever, but I think I've been saying Meriden Mississippi, but it's actually Meridian. I didn't see the second eye there, sometimes I don't understand those lyrics, so I put that in there before everyone comments on it, please feel free.
To comment either way, but we are headed to Meridian Mississippi. I have to say with the winds and the speeds we were going, that's great efficiency, we basically sat back at 85 to 90 the whole way, that's the best efficiency I've ever seen at those speeds. From this car we got a good one, we are improving quite a bit once we get 11% again, this will max out, let's take a look at our next plan, so it wants us to go to Jackson, there is nothing in between, so that has to This will be our next stop, so let's take a look at how long it will take us to get there.
Come on, oh, is it Pearl? Yeah, I guess Pearl is Jackson or at least a suburb, so it wants us here for about 20 minutes, we'll probably stay. A little bit about 92 miles, so we'll get 50% and we'll go as soon as we slow down, that's perfect and then we'll move on to the next one. I can't ask for anything better than this. We are loading here in Mississippi. Brilliant. The weather is like 65 degrees here, so this is a cool facility. I really like this design. Pullthru's are great, especially in your trailer because you can just walk in and there's plenty of room.
It doesn't look like this mall is really yours. Be well visited I don't think shopping malls in general or in the US are being visited very much recently, but this is perfect if the trailer just goes in and out, so it's a great setup in New York in California, they put cars inside shopping centers in Mississippi. They put in go-karts, ATVs and dirt bikes, I love it. Now I'm going back to the car. I don't know if the malls are condemned or under construction for something, but it took me like 15 minutes to figure out that the rest eliminate everything. on the other side of the mall so I'm pretty sure we'll be pretty good to go once we get the car back, we're at 51%, we'll get there at 10%, I think that's expected.
We should be good at making the projected one hundred and twenty-three miles if we keep driving like we were and it's only 92, so let's get going, Pearl Mississippi, come on, we were up to five percent, which is perfect, we should get a pretty good speed, maybe 120 kilowatts or sewn around here maybe 110 let's see what happens yeah alright so everything is on track let's take a look at our next stop on the way to El Paso let's see Pearl Monroe is there something in between? here and not this one, soit will definitely be next, oh my god, 210 miles with no superchargers in between, you couldn't do that in a Model Oh no, there's one in between that I'm going to say no, that wouldn't make sense, we're going 112 miles, we'll definitely stop at that one, so because it's right next to the highway, it looks like a 150 kilowatt peak boom, does it? how many miles does it travel? 112 I Think about 117, we'll charge here for, say, up to 60% and then we'll leave, if we weren't really trying to get anywhere I'd ride the little scooter to Bass Pro Shops because you're not American unless you love the low.
Pro Shops, they literally have pawns with boats in them and fish, it's great, it's an absolutely amazing display of products. I really love it anyway, we stumble upon this much more boring clothing store and hope we can find a snack that just appeared inside. They had a food court, they ate this very quickly, the cars consumed 148 kilowatts as we speak, so let's eat some pizza and get on the road, let's get the water, finish the pizza, we should be pretty well charged by now, we already have about forty five fifty. Percent I think it was a great monitored charging session on my phone.
The car projects a nine percent arrival. 133 miles driving as we were and 117 to go, so I feel pretty good going, let's review the trip right here and make sure there aren't any big changes. elevation drops what you would see here is a huge drop like this taking up energy from having to go up a hill is what we would be seeing, but everything looks pretty good, it looks like we can have one, but then you go back downhill, so it looks relatively flat and round just because I'm not familiar with this area and our next stop will be Monroe Louisiana and then I think we'll have one more in Louisiana and then we'll be in old Texas, we'll cross the Mississippi River here and this is an important river because it's one of the most well-known rivers, it is also a good barrier point all the way, separating the east and west of the USA, but the interesting thing is that we were crossing this river on our previous trip very far, towards the north.
I think about where we were. Minnesota Street. Paul Minneapolis and that was literally the same river about a couple thousand miles that way and maybe not that far away, but pretty far away where it was like -4 degrees Fahrenheit now it was pretty cold and now we're in Louisiana, welcome to our next state. on the trip and yes, I couldn't ask for anything better crossing the Mississippi at sunset, quite beautiful. Okay, we just got into the supercharger in Monroe Louisiana, we're at 6%, man, this is such an easy ride, I love it, just jumping off the charger. to the charger is the quickest way to travel, you don't have to do it, but it's the most fun, there's a cool facility, so I imagine this whole line already ended before and then, oh, I could be wrong, that's an A and B there, so hmm, that's a.
I have never seen two studs on one side and then the rest in this row, but hey, it works, the car still looks good, no, no problems, let's take a look at our loading speed, we have enough. to pick if one of these is slow and here we go, we're at the maximum speed at this state of charge that we can get, man, we've found some cool superchargers on this trip, 120 kilowatts at 6%, like I always say, hey. About six months ago I used to do 145 from 3%, but we already talked about that, so let's let this increase.
I don't think there's much to do around here hmm, maybe I should hop on the loot loop and explore a bit, let's check out our next stop before we do that, so let's head to this one, whatever it is. Oh Trevor Shreveport Louisiana, sorry if I'm pronouncing that wrong and another eighth stop, we have how many miles to get there, let's figure out 99 miles according to this let's cancel the trip and select continue trip, it's kind of strange, so one hundred and four miles of driving By road, those 99 miles were in a straight line, we'll probably need 55% to get it done, oh yeah we got it. the scooter outside, let's rock out and explore this place, it looks like some kind of empty shopping mall, we'll look a little weird doing it, but hey, okay, oh yeah, this is the way to travel.
I can also connect my phone to this. The good thing is getting a little faster speeds too, so that's pretty sick, we're heading out for a nice cruise on the swag bike, just explore it, not much to see around here, back to the car because I have to use the bathroom, we are loading at one hundred and forty-four kilowatts you can't ask for anything better, that's the red

model

three we saw earlier at the last moment of unplugging the supercharger, oh how hot, we're at the supercharger in Shreveport, Louisiana, a very characteristic model S well, those are very rare, very, I got one of those instead of our P 85 plus and we're plugged in, let's make sure we wrap it right, we're getting great speeds, like Matt, you know, following the maximum of the charging curve , this looks pretty cool supercharger but I don't think anything is open it's not too late it's only 8pm. but yeah, there's not much going on with just us and that signature red Model S charging there, so the trip planner is doing a pretty good job here of having us jump from charger to charger, which again is the quickest way in the world. that we only spent 15 to 20 minutes. at most on each charger and then jumping back to the road, so I appreciate that we put the next charger to the north and zoom out so we can see exactly how many miles away it is.
I think it was this Lyndale Texas, was it nice? sure it was, let's make sure Lyndale is okay, so let's select another 150 kilowatt unit, very good, let's eliminate the charging stops, this is how we have to see how many miles 102 miles are literally evenly spaced, which is cool so again charge up to about 55 percent and then we'll go good man these stops go by so fast we're charged about nine percent 102 miles we're at 56% we'll easily get there again we're not going for top speed , that's why I'm charging just a small percentage more for the buffer just in case and there's also no reason to keep running 2-0 miles or 0% if I don't have to, but you know, I'm totally comfortable. doing that, but we should be pretty good here, so let's unplug the silver is the best color for the Model 3.
I'm bummed they got rid of it. Time to pull the plug and voila, we are now coming to Texas, we will be in this state for a long time. For those who don't know the United States, Texas is huge, it goes on and on and on and on and it's a fantastic state. Some of the best cities are here in Dallas. Austin is a big new tech capital coming up and it's cool. place to be, but it takes a long time to get through Texas, look how big this thing is, we're here in Texas, it's going all the way here, so Buckle will be well acquainted by the end of this trip.
He made this trip before, not in an electric car or a gas vehicle, years ago. He drove all over Texas and now it's okay, we just connected at this cool bakery. I've heard about this place. You become like a Tesla key. Show your Tesla key and you will receive coffee or tea. This is a really cool bakery, it's actually a beautiful building and now they're closed, of course, it's almost nine or ten o'clock, let's take a look and see how we're doing. Charging looks pretty good on the low level, let's turn off the weather, no need to use any kind of juice, although there is a cool setup because there are for A and B, so there are total chargers and then the rest of the chargers are around this side of the building, let's run over there. and I'll show you and then if you look here, the rest of the Chargers are here, so it's kind of cool anyway, no need to interrupt those people's super charging sessions by filming them, but yeah, it's cool and check it out.
This building is perfect. The car is charging right there. This is a beautiful bakery. I hear it's amazing. I've actually seen people talking about this online. How amazing is this supercharger stop. Looks like they have snacks. You couldn't ask for a better supercharger location. It sure is. It's not open at the moment, but what can you expect? There won't be anything open on Sunday night in Texas, so that's okay, there's also a subway there that's open, but I think we'll keep checking our built-in trip planner here that's working. Initially it was a very good job, so you can see that it has stopped at each charger.
He's been doing exactly what I like. Each charger is about a hundred miles away. Basically, 100 miles were disconnected. It plugs in for a few minutes. They disconnect another 100 miles and that's the fastest way is not the only way you can do a full charge, you know, three times the amount of time you're there and go through the chargers, but this is the fastest way of traveling by road and Evie, so it will give us pause. There are plenty of superchargers. In Dallas-Fort Worth, there's a stop at this one in Arlington, which is right off the highway, so it's very good.
We are in Arlington, Texas, which is right between Dallas and Fort Worth. 4% another perfectly planned trip, it's beautiful. like a river back here and a giant stadium. I imagine this must get pretty busy during sporting events, there's only parking for miles anyway, we look pretty good, the car looks good and this is pretty good, so we're charging here to get a really good charging session and let's talk about the plan. It's 11:30 at night. It's quite far to this charger. Yes, about 115 miles, so we'll need about 60 65% cruising at these speeds. There is not a single hotel in this section. that has destination cargo.
I'm sure there are some in Fort Worth, but I'd like to get out of town, so this is what I'm thinking. I still feel pretty good. I say let's stretch it and then I can. take a nap on this supercharger but we'll see, I don't know, that's all I have left. I still feel good, we have a ways to go, we can take it to El Paso and then maybe try it, who knows, but let's keep going while I feel good. I'm not tired at all. I want to eat something and there's nothing around here. I even checked the loot cycle distance closely and there was nothing, so we'll have to do it. stop at a rest stop or something and get some food and then it should be pretty good to go for a little while longer, okay, I ran in, it looked pretty good with the snacks, I went a little crazy, bought burritos, Reese's beef jerky, gotta have off-spec beef jerky, road trips and of course a Red Bull, and I feel like I got something else too, oh yeah, I feel a little bit of an icebreaker, always keep 'em in the car, you don't want to have bad breath when you're talking to people, so with all that said, I'm parked here under a gas station light so you can see me, hopefully at least now I have a place back in El Paso , Texas, we're ready to rock a little, this is a great supercharger.
Because it has a dog park, this is very important for us who travel a lot with dogs, so while we charge at really good speeds, 148 kilowatts, practically full, I'm going to run inside and get water because I don't know what we're going to do. find on the next charter. I just drank a giant smart water that is antioxidant. I'm not sure if it's really any different than normal smart water and these nice people here when I walked in told me what that is. machine out there like an electric and electric car charger, which that explains, of course, that you know the car runs on batteries and they say, oh, this is the best, this is the future, like, he says, oh I come here all the time.
I never knew what those were like, you think you just look up Tesla. I didn't say that, of course, I was very kind, but some people really have no idea about electric cars, especially in the middle part of the US and that's where we are. so it looks like we're going to stretch it, not stretch it at all. I have to say going to Sweetwater Texas will get you there now at 4%. We're currently at a 44% charge state, so let's charge a little more for another five. minutes and we'll be on the road, well, we got here at 2%, basically all the extra range we had.
I used speed, which is good, it's fast, let's plug in, ooh, the super charger cables are pretty stiff because it's cold. outside, let's trick the tendon, it feels a little cold, okay, while loading as usual, let's review our plan. I don't want to go to Toronto when I go to El Paso, so I think he's doing a good job of making us jump. the next one here 107 miles to this charger, let's take a look just to make sure 113, so let's get a pretty long charge here, maybe because it's cold and we have a pretty big headwind, it's going to be like 60% and I think I'm going to set a timer for 20 minutes and I'll just take a quick nap and if I fall asleep it's no big deal and no one's here I won'tThey will charge fees for inactivity.
Well, I just woke up from a little nap that was perfectly timed. ready to go, we will reach midland 16%, it was a great time, really a good time to see in the distance, but there are windmills in both directions for miles, it's even a warm glove, the red lights flash in the distance generating an energy consumption. we are approaching the supercharger and this internal traffic calculation is disabled for the shirts right next to the highway, there won't be as much traffic, sometimes it says it will take ten minutes until you can see your direction, so it's definitely software.
It fails, but it's funny anyway, yeah, and there's a lot of oil rigs here and just a little bit of infrastructure, it's a pretty cool place, a lot of these little oil diggers, we're in Midland Texas at 6%, let's get the juice. here we have another pretty cool supercharger handle, let's take a look at our next stop, who wants us to do 50 minutes here? Well, what's wrong with this charger? Pecos Texas, wants us to skip that and get here, we really don't. It makes a lot of sense since this is right next to the highway, you're literally right on the highway, right next to the highway, that's going to be our next stop 20 minutes, that's the way to do it, you can see here in Texas, there's just a ton a ton of pickup trucks that's pretty much the only thing people drive but you know what tons of space fuel is cheap I totally get it and they're all work trucks especially Ron here with the whole oil industry let's take it A look. we are ready to go, we have 90 miles to go on a projected 112, we will absolutely make it, so as usual let's get going, very short stops on this trip, very short stops, but I can't complain, we've had a good charge rate and another supercharger, this one in Pecos Texas, was at 5%.
I love how spaced out all of these chargers are. The cables are nice. This thing is frozen, it's so funny, yeah, let's see what the temperature is. 35, yes, no, that will do. That will make it a little difficult to move them. I'm going to run inside, use the bathroom and maybe eat some breakfast, but before I do that, let's plan our next stop, it's pretty easy, we're just jumping off the charger. too hot to charge, except it's going in the wrong direction, we're going to El Paso, there are no chargers between this one and that one, so we'll be there next.
Let's see how many miles, so then we'll hit 90 miles pretty easily. We'll charge up to 50% and leave so we're inside a truck stop and it looks like they have a movie area for a bathroom with TV showers and then just their general store around here but this is pretty typical for truck stops. trucks here and let's go back to the car we have some food he's in the bathroom everything's fine I think the car is almost finished we're a little over 50% done so I don't remember exactly what we said we'd charge two but I'm pretty sure that we will be ready to go, let's make sure and this is the super charger here, great location.
I like these truck stops because they have everything you could need inside and it's a nice quiet place here in the parking lot it looks like we can get to 14% let's log off and go. I think that will be the theme of this trip, but we are connected to the 3%. It looks like A and B are down, so I guess that's not the case. frosting there's another I think we should get to El Paso easily from here and of course, but let's see what time 119 miles. so we'll charge up to maybe 70 60 70 percent and then we'll go from there, well, we stayed here a little longer than we needed, those of us who aren't charging very fast at this state of charge, so let's get out of here 21% of projected arrival we're totally fine just add a few phone calls to finish let's log off and as you know get on the road you guys can see a little overview of our trip this is the US-Mexico border here and we.
We'll get pretty close here. I wonder if we'll be able to see it and then in El Paso, I mean, this city is divided by the border, so I'm sure we'll be able to see something interesting. border things that go through there, so you can see Mexico here, those mountains over there and that's Mexico, the Rio Grande runs right between us and them and that's the border separation, you can see the river here and in the mountains on the side Mexican, so Very cool, sure, I've seen a lot of pretty impressive ordered patrol vehicles, some like the lifted F-150, the Chevy Tahoe that had aggressive tires.
I'm sure those trucks achieved their goal. It was great to see it and be right next to Mexico. that's crazy, well I was hanging out with my friend Sean who is another Cannonball player, he's the 3rd fastest solo Cannonball Run ever, anyway he really likes big guys like him. They charge me up to 89 percent. Let's put where we are going to go, which will be Phoenix to spend the night Phoenix AZ and we will go to Deming New Mexico it will reach 50%. Is there one we can stretch it to? Not really, so we're leaving and I have a lot of battery to burn, sorry I was hanging out with Sean, but let's go over the plan and what we're doing to get us up to 88% charged, which is a lot higher than we thought. we needed, but again.
I was just hanging out I don't think we can make it to Tucson at 250 miles, definitely not, so we have to charge here in Deming says we'll get to 48% and that sounds pretty good to me, can we break it down there so we can get the speeds up here and burn some power and I'm going to charge enough to stretch it all the way to Tucson, which is a pretty big stretch across a mountain range, so yeah, that's a pretty good charging plan, let's get started. she's plugged in, what's interesting is that all the stalls are here and the cabinets are there, which is kind of funny, so we're already at 42 percent, so I'm expecting top speeds for about half a second.
This is only because we overcharged at the previous charger in El Paso when I was hanging out with my friend, so let's see what we get and see what it increases to 104, I could do a lot more than that, but okay, let's take a look, I think this is going to be a pretty long stretch to the sauna there are chargers in the middle there is what is this here it's one hundred and twenty one miles and he wants us to go 178 you know this car is not that efficient let's go to this Here and save us something of time, so the judge will be Cox Arizona.
We need, say, 20% to go. I'm going to go to the bathroom to get some snacks and we'll be back on the road in no time. I wonder if this supercharger has enough power to run everything, look at that substation, it's right across the street, it's probably plugged into that supercharger, at least some transformer component is and then it runs towards our car, even though we're not pulling a lot, it looks like we should be ready to go 134 miles. at 70% let's take a look 176 miles yeah I'd say that's pretty good we weren't going too fast maybe I'll just give it 70% and then we'll disconnect okay we're connected in Wilcox Arizona this looks like a great yard for recreation to explore on the way back.
I would like to take this in the salt flats. I've driven it a couple of times. I've been there twice before. It's really cool, it's not great for the car, but it's a lot. fun makes everything salty, you have to wash it right after, let's take a look at our charge, we've plugged it in at 9%, like I said I can hear the little battery pumps running, we'll let this take a second. getting great speeds at the next stop, I think we can go straight to Phoenix for a 35 minute charge, but look how many superchargers there are between here and there, so why would we do that to see 150 kilowatts, that's a 72, like that What can we go? here we can go here I'm going to have to book a hotel to make sure I can get it.
Wow, this is always busy. I'll try to avoid excessive loading in Phoenix. Oh, it's always maxed out every time I pass by. Well, I booked a hotel. I'm going to let it load and then we'll figure it out so it looks perfect. Let's get out of here, do a charge for a short period of time, probably not even 15 minutes and then I'll plug it in here, the good news is if for some reason the charger is stuck there is a super charger, two of them literally at the end of the street so I have a backup option and Gruber is right next to this airport somewhere in this area so I only have to drive that way in the morning but that won't be a problem so Let's see if we can get to Casa Grande.
Sounds like a great charger. Looks like a busy charger. It's half full. We can do it? there it's one hundred and forty six miles at 66% if we continue driving slowly we can make it so come on we're in a hurry okay we've plugged in the contactors just click we're making juice let's see how many miles to go. The resort location is 66 miles and I'll leave it on the charger the entire time, so what I want to do when I get to the hotel is lower the car to about five or ten percent, probably no less than five percent, and then just leave it there for about two hours and that will tell the BMS that okay this is where the batteries are and then I can take it to 90% and let it sit there, it knows pretty much right away and that helps calibrate the battery.
Because all this charging, unplugging, charging, unplugging the car never really stops, the BMS can get confused, it's more of a problem on the Model S and X, but I've seen it on Three and this is a pretty sick three that is coming right now, that thing is incredible. Awesome, it's matte Washington gray. Impressive, he looks great, he looks quite tired. I definitely am, but the good news is that we got it done safely and efficiently, quickly, and there were no problems along the way. We met some great people at Superchargers, so let's finish this second part.
I'll see it in the next video, I think it'll be a lot more fun because we'll be at Gruber, we'll go to Las Vegas, we'll go to San Jose with a bunch of really cool people than me. I'm excited to introduce you to all of our viewers and after that segment we'll do it at home, but thanks for following along. I'm sure it turned out to be a long segment and I appreciate everything you're doing, four off spec, so I'll see you in part 3 your your
