Keychron K6 Keyboard MODS! - WORTH IT!

Jun 09, 2021
ah the kikron k6 this has been my daily driver

keyboard

since your review and i want to say its because of the trifecta right 65 wireless hot swappable design this thing is like my setup has never looked so clean because apart from of my headphone cables, no one is going to take me away, I mean, this has been the best option, especially and I am especially in love with the 65 design, so much so that this is actually my second because, as I told you in the review, I was going I went back and customized my first one just to see how much it would take to take it to the next level and it turns out it didn't take much so in this review I told you that the k6 was a little bit too strong for my taste, not extremely but it could use well something to dampen that sound profile a bit and I tried o-rings with it, but that destroyed the experience, too soft and unpleasant, plus there was a lot of unused hollow space. inside the case and since it's not a much heavier case as it's all plastic, it definitely didn't help with the sound profile, so to combat that we're going to need to lube the switches, clamp and wind the stabilizers, Band-Aid, modify the PCB. and add something to insulate the inside of the case, which in this case will be foam.

Now that last part could be done with magnetic tape which would also add a bit of weight to the actual case and this is thanks to a real comment. in the k6 review, but I ended up opting to insulate with phone material because my main concern here was to muffle as much sound as possible. Now, full disclaimer before you try to do something like that with your

keyboard

, now is the time. -consuming process even if you are good at it, so if you are not a patient person or cannot control yourself, you cannot meditate and use this time to collect your thoughts or just relax with a couple. of headphones a good tune a good album to listen to and you know, just go with the flow, you could end up coming out of this process with hatred in your soul, simply saying that you have been warned, now the first thing on the agenda is to organize what you do.

More Interesting Facts About,

You're going to need, well, you're going to need at least three or four containers or pots to deal with all the little bits that will be scattered all over your workspace, then you're going to need lubricant. In this case I am using and in fact recommend using Crytox 205 grade 0 or any other dialectic grease level circuit that is quite viscous, a small brush and if you don't have one, do like me and borrow one so you know how to use it , since you know you don't have one, you need band aids or anything else that substitutes a band aid, a switch opener or a pair of tweezers, which is what I actually used for my entire process, a cuticle cutter or an exact nail clipper or a sharp pocket knife, anything you can be precise with when cutting small pieces of plastic, a pair of scissors and eva foam or any other similar material, so first disassemble the entire keyboard, keys, switches, the PCB motherboard, now we can start from anywhere but I would just suggest that when you know, start from the inside of the actual case with the EVA foam, so just cut it to the right size for all the different little spots, making sure Make sure there are enough holes and spaces for each small screw button, switch pins and obviously the battery. the cables make sure nothing is crushed, then there are the stabilizers, just separate them, cut off the little legs that stick out too much from underneath, lubricate the center towers on all sides and the actual case from the inside, wrap the ends of the cables . and then just putting it all back together, cutting little pieces of band aid to place exactly where the stabilizers sit on the top of the PCB and that part is done and all that together is actually the easiest, so now that that's over , it's time to start attacking the switches to open them, push the pins on each side and carefully disassemble them.

Each switch is made up of the base of the housing, the upper housing, the actual stem, the springs and the metal contacts inside which we are not going to touch. I'm just telling you that there are things inside, don't touch them, leave them like this now, first paint the inside of these shafts and the outside of the center pillar at the base with a thin layer of loop and the thin part. It is important because if you use too much it may alter the feel of the switch but more importantly it could cause the lubricant to leak from the switch to the PCB and then you may have problems contacting things which can be solved with 90 alcohol. but you don't really want another process to be done after you're done, at which point you want to lubricate the springs and there are a couple of different methods you can use, one of which is obviously easier than the others, which use a plastic bag , pour a little lubricant on the springs and shake it to the sound of your favorite song until you get an even coat or you can go and paint the top and bottom of each spring one by one or apply a thin, even coat all over the spring. process, which is the process I ended up using, but before I started on the springs I realized something: there was another aspect of writing on the K6 that I wanted to try to fix which is the fact that I like a little more weight, it it needs a little more actuation force to type on my switches, so I ended up going back to my kaihua linear switches, the silver ones, and took them all apart to, you know, change the springs because the springs on the kahua switches are a little bit more harder than the ones on the gatarons, now it's okay, the spring is ready, now you wind both sides or all sides of the switch stem and put them on the spring which, as you know, is held by the lower casing now, if you are using switches that are tactile or clicky, painting these two legs on the switch could ruin the feel or make it not as pronounced as a tactile bump or click, so be careful not to do this.

You know, it ruins the feel you want from your switch. Ok, now all that's left is to paint the inside of the axles on the top of the housing, push it all together and voila, you're done. Do it 67 more times. I'm done, yes, as painful as the process sounds, I really enjoyed it, it was calming, it was comforting, you know, I just put on the headphones, listened to good music and just started the journey, but truth be told, if all this It didn't work. results I would have been angry, but luckily the board went from something like this to sounding like this, much smoother, so much software, so much chatter here, it's tight, the new sound profile on the k6 is much better than the original because it's quieter At the same time, it sounds heavier and much less intrusive, but I have to say that the only change that really took it to the next level in typing feel was the swapping of the springs inside the switches, which made a big difference. , but as for this process, I need to remind you of one thing, this is not a one time deal and you are done, as time goes on and you use your keyboard more and more, you will have to reapply lubricant to your switches in sometime. period because, as you know, not all keys on a keyboard get the same amount of use, especially if you're a gamer, these four keys will definitely get a lot more use than everything else.
Now, this modified version of the k6 is the quietest. The keyboard that sounds now is of course not linear switches with films, perhaps a heavier set of keys, a different construction on the motherboard and definitely heavier and thicker cases would create a difference, a deeper sound, possibly a more controlled sound profile but I'm very happy with how things have turned out so far with the k6 plus as a bonus this set of white keys which by the way hasn't been released yet so I'll have to talk to you guys More on this later, but this actually made up for the k6's lack of vibrancy in lighting because the actual sources are more open, they are larger and heavier despite being clear and quite sleek, so it actually helps with lighting, so another win, in the end, in addition to being an excellent value for the build and feature set despite or perhaps because of the room for improvement, the k6 is an excellent candidate for modification unless you are determined to use a custom cable because this left side connector definitely won't make things that much easier, but of course, this is wireless.
Why would you choose a wireless keyboard if you wanted to? You know how to use a cable correctly in any way. That was it.
