I Got Styled By An Amazon Personal Shopper

Feb 20, 2020
This is Safiya's new intro song, Hello Friends, and welcome to another video. Today I'm going to try Amazon's

personal

shopping service because we all know Jeff Bezos is a stylish guy. Billions of dollars, a killer vest. So a few weeks ago, I was scouring the Internet like a carpet shark, like I want to do, and I came across some articles announcing the launch of Amazon's new

personal

shopping service where basically Amazon Prime members can pay a small fee each month to take a fashion quiz and be matched with a real live stylist instead of a robot stylist, I felt it needed to be said, who will choose the things for you to wear.

Now when I think of personal

shopper

s, I think of old-school, high-end department stores. Kind of like what Rachel was from the FRIENDS job at Bloomingdale's. "My mom calls it flowers." So I think it's interesting that Amazon has "killed retail" and is now trying to get things back from it, but it also seems like with this they're trying to get closer to the Stitch Fix style box space because the format is kind of similar where You take a quiz, they give you suggestions, you try things on, and you choose what to keep. So it seems like Amazon is simply trying to eat everyone's lunch. "Who would steal 30 lunch bags?" But I guess we'll see how they do both in terms of figuring out my style and in terms of what the products themselves are like, because Amazon has kind of a huge spectrum of quality and price.

More Interesting Facts About,

i got styled by an amazon personal shopper...

Will we be on the Wish side of Amazon or the Nordstrom side of Amazon? I guess we'll find out. So now I'm going to take this quiz and then in a few days they'll give me a personal

shopper

and then we'll see what they come up with. And if I don't end up bald and wearing a big vest I'll be very angry. Alright, let's do it. Apparently Amazon's personal shopping service is only available in the app for your phone, so I have my phone. I'm recording the screen, so there's also a computer here. I think I should look for a personal shopper, right?

Here we go. I found the landing page. "Introducing the Prime Closet Personal Shopper. Let our stylists do the shopping for you. Only $4.99 a month. Cancel anytime. We'll see how Amazon works." You can't really cancel anyone nowadays. Okay, I'll click "let's get started." Bing! Oh, it says, “create your style profile,” “customize your next look,” and “sign up for your membership.” Am I not already registered for Amazon Prime? Is this like the start of the record? I have to register for an account within my own account. Okay, I'll click "next." Oh yeah, now we move on to the quiz and the first question on my style profile is: “How often do you like to wear the following styles?” So it seems like it's giving me a kind of flat set, and then I have to say whether or not I like them or how much I would wear them.

And the first is coincidental. I would say often. I'd say I don't wear real pants anymore, so I think that counts often. - I would say always. Tense! Oh, I mean, I think this flat design is definitely more of my vibe, but I'd say my everyday style is more edgy with yoga pants on. I will say often about this one too. Next, romantic. I like turtlenecks and lace, but not necessarily in a romantic way, so maybe I should say rarely. Very good, sporty. Now, I'm not an athlete but I do like athleisure. - Yes. I like leisure.
I edit most of my days. - Well, we have that bike desk. I don't use it, but I like it. - You like what it represents. Yeah. Oh, and then the next one is glamorous, and I would say I'm rarely glamorous. Nothing against glamour. Good for glamour. - Good for glamour? You know, wam bam hand in the glamour. It's usually just "wam bam hand in the clam." - No, it's - wam bam, thank you ma'am. That? - Where does this reference to the clam come from? I don't even know. Okay, so the next one is minimal.
In some ways monochromatic, I'm a minimalist, but I like dramatic embellishments. So I would say that sometimes I am a minimalist. I'd say that's fair enough. And then the last shot is retro. Now I'm enjoying a good decade of fashion adventures, but I'm not sure my everyday style is retro. So I'll say rarely and then click "next." Let's see what else they have in store for me. Oh, it's fine. This is a question about brands. Oh no, I'm never good at this. Which of the following are in your closet? Adidas, yes. Hello yoga, yes. Amazon essentials?
Do you have your own brand? Look, I told you they're coming for everyone's merkin. - They make everyone's merkin. I mean, it looks like Amazon will soon be the global manufacturer of Merkins, so everyone gets theirs. Yes, I don't have that many brands. I have like one pair of Calvin Klein underwear and four pairs of Calin Kelun underwear, so um. I don't see it here. I'm quite disappointed by that. Oh, Ugg is here. I have a really big pair of Uggs, so I feel like that counts. - However, you should not include video products. Look, but if I don't do it, I only have one check mark, so. - Ok I have it.
Ah, so the next question is about colors and patterns that I don't like. Hmm. I feel like I should be honest and click on everything. - Yes, I'll leave the neutrals on, but I'll get rid of the colors just so you know. Currently what is left there are: neutrals, grays, blacks and silvers. This is embarrassing for some reason. I feel exposed. So the next section asks me how often I wear different clothes. The first thing is the dresses. I will say that I actually wear dresses often. When I shave my legs. For the next week I only wear dresses.
Cowboys. I'm not against them, but I rarely support them. Pants, same deal. If it's not elastic it's not that I don't like it, it's just that I don't use it. Alright, next one. Ah, now you're asking me how I feel about specific trends. Midi length dresses and skirts. In fact, I'm a big fan of midi and maxi dresses. Partly because it minimizes the amount of leg you have to shave and also because you can sweep. You know, you have a kind of cape on your butt. - Many of your sartorial decisions center around leg hair. Hair on the legs and also dramatic flourishes.
Do I have to shave my legs and can I pretend I'm Snape? Oh hoo! The next trend is bell sleeves. Let me smash that "love" button. Circle. Hole. That? - Break that hole? I didn't realize it sounded like that. Obviously, I'm a big fan of bell sleeves, batwing sleeves, giant sleeves, really dramatic sleeves of any kind, so you can send me as many as you want. Okay, so the next question is about my body shape. I think I'm up and down. I think I have wide shoulders and hips, but not necessarily a very small waist. I think I'm up and down. - You're like celery.
What did we say in that video we made? The perfect makeover video? - You're like a rhubarb. Rhubarb, I have the rhubarb body type. Tyler likes this. - Yes. The next two sections of the questionnaire ask me how I like different clothes to fit, how much I like to highlight different parts of my body, my height and weight, and my general sizes. And they're also giving me the opportunity to leave a little extra information about the fit for the stylist. Oh, maybe I should tell them I have a big butt? - Well. I have pretty long legs and a pretty big butt.
For your information. Alright, next one. And then there are even more questions. Including something about my budget, which I'll just check about halfway through each category, and then a series of questions about how often I'd like to receive certain vibes from items like: business, going to the club. -And confortable. That kind of things. And with that, I have finally reached the end of this quiz. It will allow me to save my style profile, so let's do that. I'm going to click "continue." Alright, this is my payment information. - Don't you already know everything? They do it, they do it, they do it.
Ah ha, my personal shopper subscription is confirmed and I will be notified below when my stylist photos are ready. So presumably in a few days that real-life stylist, not a robot, will contact me and recommend some things to use. So I'll see you then. Alright. A few days went by and I received a notification that my Amazon buyer had selected a few things for me to review and see what I like about them. Tyler: Choose between? That is better. Overall, I haven't been contacted by anyone outside of this push notification, like I haven't chatted with anyone on the phone or DM'd anyone, but I did participate in a Tinder-style survey where Amazon gave me picks and then I would like to swipe left or right if I liked them or not.
That gave them a little more information than just the questionnaire we did, but that's it. Well, I guess we should open the app and see. What's happening? Let's go haha? I already clicked my photos. Okay, so they sent me a list of like 10 items of clothing presumably based on my style profile. So they say you should choose two to eight items from this list to try. at home free There are two jackets here two dresses For the tops a pair of tights and a pair of shoes They all seem to be name brands that I recognize so we are definitely on the Bloomies side of Amazon versus the Romwe side with the The average price is about 60 dollars per item.
Overall, these clothes look pretty decent, if a little plain. But I'm going to postpone any actual judgment until I can see them in person. Maybe I should try on eight so we can see. As much as possible, meaning two of these pieces are coming out of Vitas targeted right now, I think I'm going to pass on this gray turtleneck just because it doesn't really do much for me and I don't really see myself keeping it. So I'm not going to waste my time. And then the second item I'm going to start is this denim jacket, although I feel like I wear denim jackets a lot.
Trying on a simple denim jacket isn't the most exciting thing. - No. So I think I'm going to delete that one too and then we'll go with everything else basically. So I'm going to say review and submit and we'll see these items when they get here and we can try them on. . So next time you see me I'll have my loot. Alright, it's been about a week and we're here and ready to unpack, that is, unpack our personal Amazon buyer's journey. - Oh, wow. It's a pretty big bag. - You just closed that thing. There's nothing fragile there, right? - No, there is not.
Alright. So this is my bag. - Is this your jacket? This is my bag. Okay, you're saying sack a lot. I feel compelled to say sack, it feels good in my mouth. - My God. Sorry, why am I so obscene today? - I don't know. Ooh, okay, first I think it's a white denim or linen jacket. I actually like this jacket when I see it in person. It's a bit like a waist cincher and also has nice cargo vibes, like a military jacket. It feels good. It's definitely the right weight for a Los Angeles jacket. - So it's like just a jacket.
It's barely a jacket. Yes, but that's the kind of jacket you need in Los Angeles. So I'm not mad about it. - We can make fun of it, but it is practical. Well, that's point one of eight. What's next after my bag of tricks? Ooh, exciting thing, this is the linen peasant blouse. It looks very comfortable, in fact, a little similar to a different peasant shirt I own and have worn in a good number of videos. So this isn't a terrible choice, but maybe not the most exciting choice. - No. It's nice and useful for now.
We'll see how it fits. We'll see how it fits. - Yes. - Ooh Okay, here's another black object. I think this is our black t-shirt. They recorded it seriously. They don't want you to get involved in that thing. Because? What the hell is really going on? -Does it have a double bag? I don't know... ooh. This is cute. Actually, I'd say I found it a little disappointing online, but I actually like the fabric, the seam down the middle, and the knot detail in person. It's a very, very conservative version of "hit me baby one more time." Shirt act, I wear my jeans at the end.
Okay, the next step is we have this lump. Look mom, it's a lump. - It looks like something came out of some kind of vending machine. That's totally next for Amazon. Yes, clothing vending machines. Oh. I gave them an idea for free. You are welcome. Alright. So here you have a cute white wrap top. Oh, the fronts open. - Oh yeah? - I'm showing myself. It's a little business casual and I'm at a place in my life where I don't need business casual and I think I told you that, but you know, we'll see how it turns out. in.
Maybe it reads a little more casual on the body. Well, what's next? Ah, I think these are the leggings. Whoo The fabric on these is very soft. Tyler, feel this spread and feel this. Suddenly it turned into an ad for leggings. Oh yeah, reach out and feel this, Rhonda. Rhonda? I'm trying to be like a network type personshopping from home, now I told you I liked yoga pants and these feel quite promising, but as a kind of item that was personally chosen for me by a stylist. Again, I'd say it's a bit of a safe choice. - Very sure.
Yes. It's like I was going to buy yoga pants for a woman in her 20s. That! Do we like those? That's wild. Alright, next step. We have this gray sweater dress, which is very cute. I like the neckline and I like these little things around the sleeves, but I'm a little worried about the thickness of the fabric. I thought this dress might be more of a where ever. I like a sheer dress and this is definitely a sweater dress. I kind of feel the heat. I feel like they didn't take my location 100% into account for this one.
Like if I still lived in Chicago, I'd be thrilled with this. But not me. - Something a personal stylist should know. I mean, Amazon definitely knows this. Alright, let me wrap this up and then we'll move on to the second to last article, the second to last, the second to last article. Oh, that's nice. Wow, I like this pattern. - What are those? I think they are stars here. Let me unfold. Oh, this is definitely your style. This is definitely my style. There are many features in this dress that catch my attention. I like the fitted and flared cut.
I like the corset neckline type of situation, even if it doesn't fit me, this is probably a good choice, like an online personal shopper. I would say it's a good opportunity, a good (Tyler: stab) a good stab (a good stab) I declare Lindo. Oh, we should get a sledgehammer. - We don't need a mallet. I need a deck dear Amazon personal shopper dear Bezos, can you send me a deck? So that's item seven of eight and then our final item is a pair of shoes and if I remember correctly, these are a pair of white backless mules with studs;
They are like straight out of the Elton John biopic. Yes, I was going to say. for some reason. These give me something between Elvis Presley and Kris Jenner. Bedroom slippers, does that make any sense? - You know, you put on some sunglasses and you give him a microphone and I think Kris Jenner would like to be an Elvis substitute. That's not the worst decision. It's not perfect, but it's not the worst. These shoes are an interesting option and like a judge on Project Runway or Top Chef, I have to give them points for trying something. (Tyler: Yeah) This isn't like some kind of neutral white blouse or big dress.
This is like a studded mule. So with all of our items disassembled, let's put them on my body and see how they look. The Kardashian King lives. So after trying on our eight items, there were some hits, some misses, and some close but not pure ones, and of those, I'd say there are four items, I'm pretty sure I won't still be the first to be the white linen jacket . Overall, this is a pretty comfortable jacket. It is very light and the cut is good. But a white linen jacket seems quite difficult to maintain. So I don't think I would use it, especially since I'm used to wiping up spills. my jacket instead of taking it off;
I can already imagine mustard stains on this thing. Yes. I eat a lot of mustard. Mustard, hot sauce, coffee. I consume many products that stain. As I said before, I'm a salsa girl. That's a problem with the white jacket. The second item that returns to Bezos is the black peasant top, also made of linen. I feel like my problem with this top is that it's close to a top I already like, so it's like a weird valley between a hill. I mean, I have a top that looks like this. So I like this style and another Hill, well if I like that top more than I should keep this top, the fabric is also a little stiff and prone to wrinkling which is not great.
Feel like it's a peasant blouse, you might want to wear it a little more than a shirt that you have to like steaming and not wrinkle. The third item being returned is the white wrap top. I'm usually a medium fan of wrap style tops, but this is a real wrap top, like it has holes in it and you have to wrap it and you could unwrap it and then you could show it to people so they don't just sit there. a little precarious but I don't think it's the style that suits me the most either. So it came out along with the inappropriate-for-LA gray sweater dress.
It's warm and comfortable like what I feel. Like I like what I feel, but it feels a little weird once it's on my body. It's like a pillowcase. Maybe it should have been tighter or just more fluid (Tyler: Yeah). It's kind of in-between, which is kind of unfortunate because I like the sleeves, I like how long they are. And they have also wrapped my wrists or something like my forearms as if it were a gift. - They are a little mummified which I thought when I saw it mom meets Christmas gift. Besides those, there are two items in our collection that I'm a little undecided about.
One of them is the black shirt with knot detail that I really like. There's not much I don't like, it looks pretty standard. It's pretty standard, I'll be honest, but it's pretty comfortable. I really like the light feel and I like that the knot detail takes it around town. I feel like my hesitation comes from the fact that it's a bit plain and just doesn't feel like something you can't find at a variety of other stores, but I might still keep it as the second item I'm not too sure about yoga pants. . These yoga pants are incredibly comfortable, like a cute, soft teddy bear around my thighs.
But maybe they are a hair big. I think it's because they're not super like Hug, or they're not really like butt-lifting yoga pants. They're like yoga pants for lounging and I prefer at least a little snapback action from my leggings. I'm a little disappointed that they are too big because otherwise I would definitely keep them and am leaning toward returning them and purchasing these exact leggings in a smaller size. However, it looks like Tyler is on the team. Do you want a Tyler pair? - I'll keep that pair. Yes, I will buy a smaller pair and you will wear this pair.
Just hand them to me. I think we've figured it out, I think that's what we're going to do, and then I'm leaning toward sticking with the last two items of the haul, the first of which is this starry black dress. All right, all right. I like this dress. - Yes me too. This is definitely one of the stylist's most exciting photos. I would say it's okay, it has details. It is a dress. It has a pattern. It has sleeves, you know, there's something about it. Yes, it is a piece with a bit of style and, apart from the silhouette and details, I definitely like the pattern.
It's a little bit witchy (Tyler: Yes) a little bit celestial a little bit I mean woman of the night, but I know it has different connotations But you know what? I mean? - Yes, like a modern Sanderson sister. Yes, sisters, grab the vacuum cleaner from her! Tonight: we fly! Besides the dress, I think we all knew that Elvis Jenner's sandals had to be the winner. - Alright. They are difficult to maintain, although I have no idea what to use them with. I feel strangely attracted to them in general. They're interesting (Tyler: Yes), they're a conversation starter.
They are available and although I wouldn't have chosen them myself, I respect the stylist for taking the risk of trying to show me a new look. They are incredible. I want these things, Saf Elvis Jenner loafers, they exist. Do not search it. That was our personal Amazon shopping tour. Overall, I think all the photographs were of good quality. But overall I wouldn't say I was surprised by all the things they chose for me. It could be reasonably justified by my answers in the questionnaire. But most of them were pretty safe or intermediate. Picks from the way and it definitely didn't seem like they were trying to show me the variety of what Amazon has to offer or any promising trends;
In fact, I don't think we saw anything they said. was a trend in that part of the questionnaire and I think when you evaluate what a personal shopper brings to the table, you want someone who is better at shopping than you or who knows more about fashion than you, like Rachel Green. Joey's mom, this is a great bag. It's fine, and it's as useful as it's getting, which may not have been the right choice. But hey, at least he tried now. The service says they try to improve their selections as you use it over time. But I feel like they could do a better job faster if you could actually chat with your stylist.
But we never heard from any human being at any time - where's the personalized note, you know, like an explanation? I would have loved a note. . (Tyler: Yes) I really would have loved a note. I wish I knew who my stylist was. Alexa simply says from the corner "it was me." Interestingly, on the FAQ page for this service they imply that there may not actually be a person designing you and it could all be an algorithm, so you may just be paying for a conglomerate of the suggested bar for you. I'm not saying that's definitely what's happening, but it seems possible.
Having said all that, I wouldn't say it. the service was terrible. It was almost the same as any other style cashier service. It just wasn't very exciting, which is a bit disappointing given how much weird crap there is on Amazon. In fact, I think I'd really enjoy being sent randomly by a personal Amazon shopper. Gadgets In fact, I may like them more than this, but who knows? Maybe I'm just salty because I still have hair on my head and I don't have a killer vest. That's all I really wanted.
