How to Sew Sunglasses Case - Sewing Tutorial

May 30, 2021
Hi, I'm Vanessa, the crafty Gemini. I post weekly videos here on my YouTube channel and in this video

tutorial

I'll teach you how to make a

sunglasses

case

, so let's jump in and talk about the supplies you're going to use. I need to make a

case

for your glasses. I'm using two 10 by 10 inch squares that I had left over from a package of this cotton and steel collection and this is the perfect size because we're actually going to cut it out. down from this side, so if you have some orphan squares of these 10 inch squares that you can buy, go ahead and grab two of those, one fabric will be for the outside, the other will be for the lining and then what will give it its body .

This is the extra internal form that you guys know I love to use. It's a double-sided fusible product that has like foam on the inside and it gives it a really good body for this type of project, so you're going to need it. a rectangle of that that measures eight by seven inches, so the first thing we need to do is cut out our pieces of fabric, since mine are ten by ten, I'm going to cut them down to eight by nine inches, all right, and I'm just I'm saving a step here, I'm just going to stack them on top of each other that way I can cut both layers at the same time, so we'll cut it eight in one direction, so we're basically cutting two. inches on one side and then I'm going to turn it over and trim an inch off the other side as well, so this should be nine, so two rectangles that measure eight inches by nine inches is what we start with now, let's get our table ironing board and our iron and at this point it doesn't matter if you are like me and sometimes you can't decide what fabric you want your lining to be, you still have time to decide, so first just take one of the pieces of fabric and place them with the side nice down.

We'll take our inner shape plus and place it fairly centered all the way around because it's an inch shorter, it should have about a half inch of seam allowance. on all four sides of our shape and once it looks like it's pretty centered, I'm going to hold it with my fingers, try not to let it move too much and just flip it over because we want to press this away from the fabric. The side I definitely don't want to press it from the other side because the product is fusible on both sides, so I'm just fusing this in place and noticing that it's not fusing on the opposite side.

Okay, so just merge one. side now we're going to take our other fabric and we're going to lay it out with the nice sides touching on top of each other and you can put some pins in if you want at this point, then we're going to head over to the

sewing

machine and using a quarter inch seam allowance, We're going to sew around all four sides, but first we definitely want to make sure that we're leaving an opening. I'll tell you where I recommend you leave it. opening up I like to leave it on one of the short sides, so let me put one more pin here so nothing moves right and you'll notice it's a rectangle, so we have two long sides and two short sides on one of the short sides. is where I like to leave my opening, so I'm going to leave it right here, which means we're going to start at one end of that back opening stitch, you're going to go around all the corners and go all the way around and stop at the other end. and sew back there as well, okay, let's get our

sewing

machine ready and I'm just using a basic straight stitch again using that quarter inch seam allowance so you're not actually going to sew through the foam at this point, okay, coming to the end, so let me do some topstitching here, so now let's take our rotary cutter and we're going to trim the corners so we can reduce some of the bulk that we have on the sides. just shave them at an angle making sure not to cut the stitches because you will have to sew them back on if you do it right.

Now we can reach our opening and we're going to turn everything around. With the right side facing out, make sure you get to the corners and turn it over now because we haven't sewn the foam, it may come off a little bit, it may move, but don't worry because it will usually stay there in place. and you can fix it once you've turned everything over, okay, and then I'll go back in and take my time getting all those corners out. At this point, you can use a toothpick if you want to help you scoop. Those corners are fine, let's take our ironing board and iron again, let's give it a good press.
Now remember that the product is fusible on both sides, so the lining is not fused yet, but now we will hit it with the iron so that it fuses well. I'm going to go in here, where the opening is, I just put my index finger and pull on the ends of that opening and the seam allowance will roll in for me easily and then go ahead and press well to fuse everything together nicely, so in this one point you need to decide which side you want the lining to be on, so we're not going to sew where the opening is because it will get caught. in a moment, we'll expand the seam allowance, but let me show you that you need to decide now what you want your lining or exterior to be, like which fabric is going to be which, but actually, before we do that, let's quickly make the right little tab. here and for that you can use any of the prints that you use.
What I like is that since we cut out these 10 by 10 inch squares, I have strips here that I can still use to make my tab, so I think I'm going to go with this navy fabric for the outside and I'm going to make the tab. with the lining fabric, so for this what you want to do is cut a piece that measures two inches, which it already does and you want it to be four inches to the other side, that is two inches by four inches and take your iron and ironing board and let's quickly make a little tab.
You're going to lay this nice side down, fold it in half and press so you create a fold in the center and then you open it up and bring the edges right up to that center fold line and give it another press, then you fold it again in the initial fold, press it again and your strap is ready. All you need to do is sew the folded side to hold it together, so I'll do that real quick, and there's our little loop, so now we've decided what I want the outside to be. on this side, so I need to sandwich it in there, so you're going to flip the loop so that the raw edges are now going to the outside of the seam, so let me show you what this is going to look like, you need to get your bearings. the rectangle so that the long sides go horizontally in front of you because it will fold like this, if you do it like this, it will be taller, but also narrower, okay, so make sure you orient yourself.
Do it that way with the longer side horizontally in front of you and you're going to fold it across this vertical fold here, so a little bit of waste from the top, I like to look first and see which end looks like. Better, this looks like a sharper edge to be the top and the top means this part where the opening for the

sunglasses

will be. Well, here you see this top stitching line that I did over here, that's what I did. What I'm going to do now, so I selected this as my top where the opening will be, so let's sew the top first and you stay very close to the edge, about an eighth of an inch away or so. now we know that's our top edge, it's been top stitched, our sunglasses case is going to look like this, so we want to fold our loop over and place it so that the raw edges match up with the side that the loop is on. it should go towards the center of the Case and I just place it about an inch or an inch and a quarter away from the top edge.
You can place it anywhere you want. I'm just going to fold it and place it there. I usually like this edge to stick out. a little bit just so that when I sew this I can make sure I'm catching all the layers. Let's place a couple of pins. In fact, let me grab my clips for both fabrics. It is better to use these wonderful clips. It's a little easier. and I'm matching the sides here all the way down this side and along this bottom, so remember that the top stitch part is your opening. Now we are going to sew one side and the other as big back.
Backstitch at the beginning here and backstitch at the end down here again straight stitch now this is quite bulky but the foam is very light so it sews like a dream but I still like to go ahead and go up or increase my stitch length a little more. since we're going to go through a lot of layers, if you don't have a sturdy machine, go ahead and take your time and make sure you use about 90 14 needles on your machine and you should be fine at times. backstitch and topstitch right where the tab is just to give it some security.
There I'm turning here when I get to the bottom corner and I backstitch at the end too now this part is fun, this is the big reveal that you are I'm going to get here, it's a little tight, but I like it like this, that way the glasses They won't come out of the sun, so take your time and turn it all over again, grab that iron and ironing board, you know?
