How To Pull Cab On 6.4 Powerstroke

May 31, 2021
What's up guys, welcome back to the channel today. We have a 6'4 power race in the shop. Let's take out the cabin. Normally, you have to

pull

the cab out for jobs like the head gasket, which is where we replace the. head gaskets on these guys but I just want to make a video on how to

pull

the cover on a 6'4 power stroke so if you find it helpful please like and subscribe and with that let's get here it's been over a while since I did it. I've done one of these probably a couple years ago, so bear with me, I might jump back and forth on the truck, but I'll do my best to go over everything that needs to be disconnected so I can lift the cab off the chassis if he does it.

If you have questions in the comments or find me on Instagram about Dark Iron Diesel and send me a message. I can tell this one needs a head gasket or head gaskets because it has a new radiator cap here and I went and grabbed it for a bag and there's coolant all over this reservoir, it's just pushing up, this rat hose is hard as a rock and this is a 16 pound rad cap and it's still blowing this rad cap so this thing definitely needs head gaskets sometimes egr coolers can crack and it gives you the same type of coolant pressure , but this truck is already completely removed, it has no egr coolers so the only thing left is a head gasket before doing this job, if you don't have an a/c machine you should go.

Go to a shop and have them suck all the Freon out of your AC system because you're going to disconnect your AC lines, so you don't want all that stuff getting into the atmosphere. I've already done it on this truck, so Just something I thought I'd let you know, get the freon or refrigerant whatever you want to call it, get it out of your lines before you do this, before you take it to the store, so in a perfect world, They really should have a two post hoist to lift the cab and that would be the first thing I would do is back the truck up to the two post hoist and I would position the arms so one of them swings over here. this seam and then the other one as far back as possible back here, uh, and then you would disconnect everything and then before you lift it up, you would usually run a ratchet strap from the post through the cab, so the cab doesn't tilt when you lift it up. , but we don't have a two post hoist here, so we're going to use a garbage truck or a crane to get this out so we can just want to mention that if you have a two post hoist, definitely put it on there, it will be a lot easier for you if Your truck is hot when you start this job and it is pressed up very gently, open this rad cap. just so you can hear the pressure coming out of it, you don't want it to go, then unplug the rad plug and drain the coolant.

You can now disconnect and remove both batteries. The batteries are dead. Now let's drink. this whole coolant reservoir on the outside, there's four bolts, there's a hose here and then there's the actual hose down there that has one of these same style on it, a little spring clip that you have to take out of there, take the hose off and, uh , come on. This guy takes note of this vacuum line here that goes to the bottom of this battery tray. I'm probably going to disconnect it right there from that t and keep it with this deposit.

This is what this clip looks like for this hose. Remove the coolant reservoir and a little pro tip when you put it back on, just put it on the hose first and then when you slide the hose on you'll hear a click and that's when you'll know it's clicked into place, okay? we've got these two coolant lines, we're going to disconnect them, you've got this charge tube, there's a clamp right there, we're going to disconnect that as much as we can and, uh, your top hose as well, here's another one of these spring clips. We're going to take that out and we're going to slide that guy in and like I said, with these spring clips, just put them back on as soon as you take them off because then when you put them on, it's going to be a lot easier.
It will just snap into place and then you won't lose them. Bungee cords are definitely your friend when you're doing something like this, so look, I sucked this upper radiator hose back, it's going to stay here with the engine and then this charge tube and these coolant lines I tied them up because they're going to come up with the cockpit but now we're going to remove this coolant line that goes from the firewall right here we're going to take this clamp off and this will also go up with the talk with the cockpit, okay, now there's one, two, three plugs, I think that's it, I'm not sure, but these harnesses here are going to go up and then these parts here are. we're going to stay down so we have to disconnect those electrical connectors okay take the seat belt and put it over the steering wheel and then connect it so this can't move because we're going to disconnect the steering axle and we don't.
I want this all out of alignment, so there's the steering shaft, you're going to take that bolt out and then we're going to slide it down so this steering shaft disconnects just like that, just like that, now you've got these two. The power steering lines now you see one has the little blue tape on it, this one should have a tube that has fallen off but all I'm trying to say is make sure they are back the same so if you don't have the blue tape each, so, you know, mark one with a paint marker and leave the other blank just to reconnect them in the same place where you removed them, once we remove them, we'll fold them under here. and place them here, they will be tied with a bungee cord to the engine because I think they will stay down while the cabin goes up, if it has any covers, I like to plug and cover these lines so that there is no oil leak, but if not, no It's a big deal, but next we're going to remove this brake reservoir.
Basically, these lines go down to this ab module that's bolted to the frame, so it's a lot easier and you don't. I want to bleed the brakes, so you just unscrew the two types of bolts that go to the brake booster, firewall there, and we're just going to fold this thing over and it'll stay on the engine, uh, while the rest of it goes up, so yeah, you can take. Outside of the brake reservoir, you'll also want to disconnect the two plugs because the harness is going up but this stays down. I think I said two, but there are actually three connections on this brake fluid reservoir.
Well, with the brake reservoir. Off-road, this is something to look for in many trucks. Look how it has this cable that runs up here and into the cabin and then it has another cable down there that runs through the firewall into the cabin. So you will have to go to the cabin, disconnect them and take them out again, or you can just cut them off and reconnect them later, but look because many guys use some aftermarket accessories that require power. over there or whatever is right, so you just have to look at them and you have to know how to cut them or take them apart, whatever you want to do.
Okay, there are two lines on the bottom of the power steering reservoir. You can leave this one because it only stays in the cabin, but this bigger one that goes to the power steering pump on the engine, you have to remove it, so there is a hose clamp there, you are going to slide this hose to remove it and try put something under it because it will vomit all this power steering oil, so yes, we are going to remove this larger hose of the two from the power steering reservoir, it is practically impossible not to spill a little, I hid this steering hose assisted up here and I put a plug in, you can see it there just to keep it from dripping, but I think the keyword just thinks we're done on this side, uh, obviously, we won't know until we start lifting the cabin, but for now we are.
We will stop on this side and continue as I said. We'll probably end up coming back here because I probably forgot something. It's been two or three years since I did this. Let's continue on our way. over there and keep removing things, okay, here you have this wire right in the middle, it goes into your fan, we're going to disconnect it, now we're going to disconnect these two wires and we're going to unscrew it there or unclip it and then I'm just going to take this out. air filter housing type. Okay, now we can disconnect this connector and this one here.
Notice how it's going to come up with the cabin, so we don't need to remove it. We will start with. These two, be very careful with these because they really like to break, so work back and forth if you have to grab some pliers and pull these ends out, but yeah, be very careful, these things love to break. here and now you see this ground wire that comes, it's on the engine, it comes up here, so unscrew it and you can bend this ground wire on the top of the engine, now this lower coolant hose that goes right here, we can disconnect it . uh and this one on top doesn't matter we can leave it on because it just comes from the cabin and goes back to the cabin so this one can stay on the bottom one although we have to turn it off right there okay everything is off so I said beginning of the video uh we have to disconnect these AC lines so you don't want to just open this up and let the refrigerant go into the atmosphere it's bad for the atmosphere so I've already sucked it up. in a different store because we don't have it, we don't have an AC machine here, but yeah, you can unplug this while your AC line unplugs that guy right now, now we're going to unplug this little cable just by pressing.
There's also another ground strap right here that you're going to disconnect because it's going to stay down with this guy, okay, so pay attention to how these cables go, maybe even take a photo of this guy, uh, us. We're going to disconnect this ground here because it's going to go up and this is going to stay, so I think disconnect that anyway, so on this positive we're going to disconnect this one that has this type of fuse or whatever. is and then these two that are sandwiched together we're going to disconnect them and these two lines that come out of them go to the motor, so I'm pretty sure that if we just disconnect those guys, those guys, those guys in this one, then we can save the rest there.
Okay, for now I have them all over the place and we spread them out as much as I can. You can start to see what will stay with the engine in it. chassis and what's going to go up with the cabin on this side, so we have this vacuum line, so if you just disconnect it here, I think it can stay and the rest of the stuff is up in the cabin, so it can be go, so yeah, disconnect it right there and then also this other charging tube here, disconnect it, take this clamp off and just pull it out the side, you won't be able to get it out or anything, you can just pull it out a little bit that way and now look, there's another AC line that's supposed to be hooked up to here, but on this truck it came out that way for some reason, but anyway, if I lift this up, you can see right there is another air conditioner, the second one we have What to do is remove that 13 millimeter nut and separate it right there, okay, I disconnected that A/C line, I actually put it inside this intake boot just to keep it out of the way.
By the way, I'm not sure what else it could be. on this side. I may still have something else to do, but we'll move on and we can always come back once I remember how this all works. It's going pretty well so far. I remember a lot more than I thought though, so it's okay, the hood latch down here is bolted to the bumper. I think there's only one eight millimeter bolt in the back, we have to take it out and put it in here. somewhere because this whole hood latch assembly is going to go up with the cab, you can stick this up there now we're going to remove these two hoses right here, these guys are out now I think we have to take too I'll remove this one if I remember correctly , so you're going to undo it there and take it out of that little clip there, okay this part sucks, so here's your radioactive hose at the bottom, there's another one of those spring clips that we're going to take out that clip and separate this rod hose.
Sometimes I have a flathead screwdriver in there and just gently pry it so it starts to come apart. uh you might have these little clippy kids up here that are outside. my truck, but they should be hooked up somewhere, but get them out of there too, but yeah, we have to disconnect this radiation hose, put a bucket under here because this hose is going to be full of coolant and just try not to soak it completely. and getting cold because that sucks I tried so hard and ended up getting completely soaked and basically lost the bucket completely so I can't even do it right yeah I'll have to go home at lunch and buy a new t-shirt because, right?
Now I'm just a commando in this hoodie, okay, I'm back from lunch, I had some nice salmon, I put on another shirt, so we're ready to go, I think we're like I said, maybe we'll have to come back and do some more stuff. , but I think we're mostly done, let's go below, we have a couple of things we need to do below thetruck, okay, first thing is the shift linkage that comes from the shifter, there are two 13 ml millimeter bolts. there we're going to remove them and then there's this tab right here that we're going to remove, I think you pry this piece and then this thing slides out, but it's been a while, so I'm going to take I turn it off and then I'll show you guys, it's okay, yeah, they have a pick here and they just lift this up and then push it right now.
Now I have it flush. I usually just take a flathead screwdriver like that and then I just hit the end of the screwdriver with my hand to push it forward and this thing usually comes out, okay, I pulled it out, there's actually a second little slot here, so you have to lift the tab to slide it back a little bit and then you have to lift it again to slide it back into that second slot, so you just have to lift this tab all the time and then it will slide to put it back on everything what you do it's just slide it on when you're ready, but yeah, this should come loose, okay, it should hang like this when you're done, okay, now this bike can suck too, uh, this is the parking brake cable, so what we do.
What we're going to do first, we're going to do it down just to loosen it up a little bit and then once we've got it down, we're going to put a little bit of clamps in here just to keep the slack and then we're going to try to get it out of here, okay, like this , I took it out a little bit, put some clamps on it just to keep it loose. Now we can fight this thing, so this one is already a little loose there, which is good, but we have to open this enough so that we can slide it forward and out in this open place, so I'm just going to take some pliers, usually vise grips, and hold them at the top and hold them at the bottom and just try to pull it apart. like this then you just separate it once it's separated you should be able to move it like this now hold this cable and remove the jaws and let the cable come in once this bark brake cable is Back you removed the jaws there are two tabs, one here and one here, on each side, you have to use pliers and pinch them and then you can push this and you're going to push it all the way through this cabin. mount it until it's hanging here, right on the wheel, and it will hang like this, take it off that bracket and hang it.
I like to use these pliers for this, they work great because you can pinch. each one of those tabs and then just push it in, but yeah, okay, so just so you know, those things that we just did were more on the driver's side of the truck, now that we're on the passenger's side of the truck. , uh, there's this little ground strap I just have to disconnect it like this, I always like to put the bolts back if possible, you know, something like that, then you have to worry about where they go or losing the bolts, but yeah, get this one small ground strap on passenger side. disconnected okay so now we're going to go ahead and remove these cab mounts depending on whether your truck is a regular cab extended cab like this or a crew cab it depends on how many you have.
I think the double cabins have eight. an extended pod has six mounts so there's one here, one up here and then there's one on the front of the truck anyway I only get a half inch hit and I think it's an 18 or 15 millimeter connector and it's only uh take it out and I really hope you have good luck with them because a lot of times they get stuck or the nut that's welded there inside the cab will start to turn and if that's the case then you're going to have to pull the raise up the floor a little bit and actually weld that nut back on so it stops turning or try putting a wrench on it it's very hard so hopefully when you close them they'll come out okay that's what we like to see if our luck will continue no it's well look what happened here we're spinning so we broke the nut on the inside that sucks but I shouldn't I should have expected that because every time I make a YouTube video it never comes out right so.
I'm going to go to the other four remaining and see how many revolve around me. These are where the front ones are, just so you know. Up there, pay attention to where these come from because I don't. I don't remember exactly, but I'm pretty sure some of them are longer than others shorter than others. When you put them back in, make sure you put a layer of copper or some kind of anti-seize material so that if you have to pull the cockpit again, which you probably will because you're driving a 6'4 power race, then at least it won't be a pain to part with, so out of the six, these middle two rotated, so I have one here. one on the other side, so I'll show you what we're going to do with them.
I think we could connect a plug from the cabin. If so, that would be a big help, but yeah, we have to get these center cockpit brackets out, they're just spinning right now, okay, so if I remember correctly, the cockpit bolt is somewhere under here. , this procedure should be the same on the driver's side as it is on the passenger's side, but I'm going to open this trim. Remove the piece with some upholstery tools and then we'll take this piece out and take it out and lift up the carpet or whatever carpet you have in your truck a little bit to expose the top. the cab bolt I always vacuum all this stuff before I put these parts back that's disgusting look at that look at all those sunflower seeds it makes me want to throw up I'm just going to vacuum them up now before coronavirus comes from this truck, it's okay, that's a little bit better, so if I just peel it back, oh, by the way, you might have to take this out and put it to the side a little bit, just take it out to get this piece out, but, yeah. let's grab this guy you might need a flat screwdriver an upholstery tool pull it out and then the bolt should be under that thing and there it is before you do anything just grab some kind of wd-40 or free everything or something like that. and just give it a spray, okay, you can grab a 22 cap on a breaker bar and then put a friend under it to try to close it, come on, let's hammer it, okay, we get it out, I had to use a bigger impact on average inch. but she got out there, so I'm going to repeat the process on the driver's side, okay, I have that other cab mount, a couple of things I want to go over, this truck doesn't have fog lights, so if you have fog lights, you may have to unhook them because the fog lights will be on the bumper and the wiring harness will probably come up, so the fog lights are one thing and another thing inside if you have the shifter down here. for your four wheel drive you will probably have another link underneath that you will have to disassemble something else something else I see on trucks the locks go underneath and just look between here because sometimes guys like to run wires from the back rear of your cabin raised like in this example to put up beacons or something or a sled platform, whatever I check, you just have to go underneath and look to make sure there's nothing tied or bolted to the cabin that He thinks he's going. to go up just check it out and check it out but I think I'm pretty ready to raise the cockpit so if you're following step by step don't try to raise yours yet let me do this first so I can see.
If I forgot something and then at least I'll break something and you won't break it yourself, so I'll hook up our garbage truck to this thing and we'll lift it slowly, very slowly. have a guy driving the pickup truck and then me and another guy go look and as soon as I start picking it up I'll start moving it just to see and move the whole cab that way so I can see it and make sure I don't see anything tight. You know it should move freely and you can see where the engine is and where the cabin is.
You want to make everything clear, so, yeah, let's go. to try to lift this cabin and like I said, wait until the end, just wait until it's in the air to see if I forgot anything. One more thing is that I know they are rare, but they make six and four strokes of power on a standard, so if you have a standard, you will have to remove the shifter, the shift tower, out of the cabin for it to stand up and don't get caught in the transmission there and, because I'm not using two poles. a pole hoist, which is what you should use and I'm using a collector truck.
I'm going to run a sling through the cabin. I'm going to take this hood off so I can put some slings in here and come just to level the cab while I take it off so I'm going to get rid of this hood but like I said I should use the two post hoist and if that's the case then It is not necessary, you do not need to remove the hood. It was so easy that I'm quite surprised that I didn't even forget anything and like I said, two or three years since the last time I did it, my brain actually works and I didn't fry it when I was younger, so that's it.
Well, like that It's what it looks like with the cab off, so I know it's a little annoying having to remove the cab to do head gaskets, but honestly, once you have the cab off, it's not that bad. It's a job to pull the cab and then it's very easy to work on these things. It's very easy to work on these things. As you can see, you can imagine how easy it would be if you had a two post hoist to simply lift the cab straight up. above, it makes it a lot easier than using a pickup like we have, but I mean, you make do with what you have, just remember that if you're using a two post hoist, you need to tie down the back like you would use a ratchet. big heavy duty ratchet strap across the back and attach it to the lift just to make the cab heavier in the front so it will want to tip over so make sure you do that but anyway that's it for this. video I don't think I'm going to make a video on how to put the cockpit back in because I mean if you take this cockpit out and you're taking on such a big job, you should be able to put it back in. and you know, remember what you did, you can always rewatch this video once you have the taxi back online just to see if you forgot anything, but yeah, if you could please like and subscribe because I put a lot of effort into these videos for you guys and if you want to be a total rock star, you can go to dark irondiesel.com and buy something like that.
If you have questions, ask in the comments or find me on Instagram in dark. diesel iron and send me a message, but I'm going to continue with this anyway. I'll probably make a video on how to do the head gaskets so I'll start ripping this apart to get the heads off but yeah thanks for watching see you in the next video
