Jun 04, 2021
What's up, friends? My name is Felix and I am here again with another video for all of you today and in this one I will teach you how to

make

post

punk

type

beats

inside FL Studio. Also just a quick clarification. Post

punk

is a very broad genre, it basically encompasses all the different bands and genres that emerged in the late '70s, after the punk era died out and essentially a lot of artists wanted to do something that was new and different from punk music. and at the same time maintaining a lot of influences from traditional punk music, so basically everyone took different routes and influences from different areas, so

post

punk is basically like a big term that encompasses things like gothic rock and horror punk and dance punk and new wave and all that other stuff too, so now that that's out of the way, be sure to check out my instagram and my soundcloud in the description below along with the place of the songs that produce my groove, storm, my discord, everything that. stuff go see it if you want to and now we can get into this video so basically when people think of post punk there's like three main bands they think of and that's joy division the cure and the smiths like that With the priest, many people consider them more gothic rock, but they have many dance pop type songs and also many songs that sound very much like gothic rock.

The smiths are definitely not one of those bands that when someone asks you what punk release it is, this is what it is because a lot of their most popular songs that everyone knows are more pop and take a lot of influences from funk and dance music. disk and also move further away. like the typical textbook example of post punk that I think in most people's minds is joy division joy division is like that band that most people know today that is a very good example of post punk, so yeah, with the rhythm I have. I'm going to do today, but I'm going to take influences from these three bands, mainly Joy Division, because I know that's what most people are here to see.

More Interesting Facts About,

However, if you want me to

make

a video more oriented towards the Smiths or The Cure, let it. I know it and I can do it too, so the only thing you'll really need for this is an electric guitar, all you need to record one, and obviously a FL

studio

, when it comes to playing guitar. Partly, like I said, post punk is a very broad genre, so there are a lot of different options that you have, but like I said, today I'm going with more of a Joy Division type vibe, so I think you want a very dissonant sound. . the word chords a really nice chord is a sus 2 chord.

I'm going to just use a simple triad version which is like this, it's a bit over the top so this may be difficult for some new guitarists but basically just pick the root note and then you go one fret and one string down and then one fret up and one down again and then you have this and some may refer to this as the police chord because of this song, you know, but I'm basically going to put a capo on the second and then I'm going to do this and then I might also do this or something like that and then maybe I take off the pinky and add the middle finger down here, which basically makes this a major chord shape. seven shell that uses a lot of emo rock music, so with this type of music you usually want to do several guitar parts, so I will probably do a section where I play the chords as a whole instead of picking them out like arpeggiating them and then, obviously I'm also going to do a solo and everything here and then I'm also going to do a bass sound with this guitar and here's a video about that if you want to see it so inside the fl

studio

here the first thing I go The thing to do is put together a simple little drum pattern, so with these types of rhythms the drums are usually very simple and you're just going to do something.

This way you'll set your tempo somewhere around 170ish and then with your drums you have two options: you can use some live sounding drums, which is probably your best option, but it's also just as horrible to say. You can go with some funky drums because if you go in here to the packs and then you go to the drums and then you go to the kicks and the snares and you go to this snare right here, the lin snare and there's also a lin kick, just like these The drum sounds are based on the Lindrum drum machine which was used a lot for New Wave music and I actually downloaded another kit that has slightly better sounds and I literally just searched for the Lindrum drum kit and got these two sounds here .
What I'm going to use today is a combination of these drums and some live sounding drums as well, but anyway, what you want to do is just put your kick on the first thing here and then put your snare here. snare here and then the other kick drum here and instantly you'll get this typical punk type drum pattern and this kind of super common drum pattern is what I'm going to use today, but don't worry because there are some ways to spice up this drum pattern. drums a little bit, so what we can do is obviously add a few more notes here and there like something like this, you know, any other variations that you see fit, also what you can do is increase your swing. a little bit, which is this knob here, it just gives it a more human feel and then if you want to give it, you know, a lot of human feel, what you can do is play the drum sounds yourself using a midi keyboard or as pads of drums or something and just come up here to record notes in automation and then hit the space bar and then if it's way outside the lines because of input lag or whatever, you can just drag it to the side a little bit and then , if you're using a layered snare like me, you can just copy and paste and then you can go and do the kick drum as well, so once we have this, we'll take a little break. from the drums and we're going to go straight to the guitar because essentially we're going to use this as a backing track to record our guitar material, so with your guitar what you want to do obviously is follow your process. plugging it in and everything and then I'm going to load up the guitar rig here making sure my guitar is in tune and everything and with the preset on your guitar rig you want something pretty clean, pretty simple but with a lot of chorus and reverb and delay. and stuff like that, so I like to go to the jazz chorus and then just turn the chorus knob almost all the way up.
Also if you have the option you probably want to put the pickup selector in the middle of your guitar because that gives a pretty good sound for this too if you don't have a guitar rig no big deal the main thing I'm for Using is just the Chorus and Amp Simulator here, but you can find other Chorus Amps, Plugins and Plugins. obviously too and we'll also add some more effects after we record this on the guitar rig, so yeah, I'm going to record the first guitar part right here, so I just recorded the guitar part pretty much like I did.
I described it before and it sounds like this so yeah it's basically just those two chords and then I change them at the end so now what I'm going to do is record a little guitar part and then turn it into a bass line and I'm not going to show the whole process because I actually have a video about it, but for this, if you want, you can use some one shot bass sounds or you can also use wide bass, which is a pretty good free bass vst. Alright, I just made the little bass pattern sound like this pretty basic pattern, but when you make your bass line you want it to be something like this, just a pretty simple tempo pattern that follows the bass notes of your chords, so Now what I want to do is go in and record a couple more guitar parts, so like I said, I'm probably going to do some chords and then also something like a lead of some kind, so I just recorded this simple little part with the chords that sound. like this and then I also recorded this title track, which actually took me a long time to do now that we've basically recorded all the guitar that we need, let's go back to the drums here and now let's go To improve this drum pattern a little bit, there's quite a few different things we can do with this drum pattern.
One thing you can do is add an open hat and then also add a regular hi-hat with your open hat. what you can do is click complete every four steps and then it'll give you this kind of sound right here, which is a pretty common thing that you'll hear with these

beats

and also what you can do is go to your closed greeting. -hat and then fill every two steps and now we can slow down every other note and it will sound like that too, if you want, you can add a shaker that I brought in a loop here, but you can record it. yourself very easily, all you have to do is just fill a water bottle with some rice or something and then you will get a nice shaking sound, so now at this point we only have two things left that we need to do.
Mix this beat and then we have to lay out the whole count, so first I'm going to mix the beat. The mixing won't be too complicated, but there are a couple of important things that I'll show you, so I usually don't do much when mixing my drums, but the one thing that's pretty cool to do is obviously still a preference like everything I show you, but I like to put some reverb on all my drums so you can do that. instead of having to put a reverb on each track, press control and then select all the drums and then go to an empty track and then right click and route to just this track and now all the drums go to this track . from the master track and then this track goes into the master track, so basically what we put on the blue track here will affect the entire drum sound, so I'll just load in a fruity reverb and then go to the little one. studio preset and as you can hear it already has a great sound and this is more or less what we are going to use for our drums and now with all the guitar parts and everything is going to get a little more complicated but nothing too crazy.
Basically, we're going to go to each sound and then we're going to put an EQ on it and with the EQ we're just going to cut some of the lower frequencies down here that we don't even need and then maybe remove them. some high end because usually with this genre you have a darker sound so you don't want to have a lot of high end and stuff and then we're also going to go ahead and add some reverb and probably a little bit of delay and then also at this point you can add more backing vocals if you think your track needs a little more and then certain sounds we will make more stereo than others so the main sound won't be super stereo. but the main sound will probably be a little more stereo, the bass will be stereo, whatever suits your preferences, really just a side note.
I slowed the tempo down to 170 because it was a little fast for me, but anyway, now what I'm doing. What we're going to do is just lay out the beat and everything so we can split by channel in the drum pattern and then we can drag all the drum sounds in here like this and with the layout it won't be anything too complicated. I'm just going to have that simple little drum pattern playing for most of the song with the exception of certain little breaks and things here and there, but I want it to start like this, so it'll just be the drums and bass right at the beginning like this, then this is going to come in and finally we'll have the main guitar sound here and then we'll have some parts where it's just the bass playing like this and then we'll just have some parts.
Other little variations here and there throughout the song. One thing you can do if you want to spice up your drum pattern a little bit is to add a little type of tom roll. You can just make a little pattern like this and then put it on. like here or something like that and then maybe just add that like every eight bars or something like that, so yeah, at this point we're almost done with this beat, obviously you can add other little drum breaks that you know and stuff, this It is not the way. which you know, every post punk song is like a little generalization and a lot of the cure songs actually use a synthesizer, so if you want to put some synth keys that follow the same chords that we use for the guitar, you can always do that, that might sound good too, there's a million other things you can add, you know, obviously the genre itself was born from people trying new things and trying to come up with new genres and stuff, so if anything, I best thing you can do is What I can do here is just experiment and play with things, so yeah, that'll be enough for me in this video.
I hope you enjoyed it. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments.
