How to Make Russian Post-Punk in FL Studio

Russian Post Punk style beat my other Post Punk tutorial which focuses more on healing like indie Post Punk style but Russian Post Punk has a very different sound so the major. The influence for this video and probably the best known band in this particular genre is a band called Mumas, they sound sinister and I think it's worth mentioning that they're not actually from Russia, they're from Bellus, but they've been a big inspiration for the whole Post Punk scene in that area and Bellus is like they're pretty close, so this particular genre is very well known for using Lindrum drum sounds, all the tracks have a very dark and ambient feel to them. and they usually have a mix of different guitar melodies layered with darker synth sounds, but anyway let's start making this beat here, so jumping into the Daw, I'll be using FL Studio, but all of these tips will apply to anything you use also.

The first thing we want to do is extract some Lindrum sounds. You can just search for the Lind Drum drum pack and you will find something that you can use inside my old drum kit. I also have a bunch of sounds that would work. Well, for this, this kick is basically a Lin drum kick, but it was done a little better, so as you can see I took quite a few sounds, but really all you need is a snare, a couple of percussion sounds and then maybe a high hat for We want these beats to be relatively fast, so around 160 will be fine.

There are some Mula Duma songs that are a little slower, but we'll just use 160 Vibe. Sometimes you might hear a four in it. floor kick pattern, but it's more common to hear a pattern more like this or this one, which just sounds more like a kind of boom and with the snare I find that it sounds a little better if you turn it down a little. so let's lower it like 200 cents and now we're going to fill this bad boy with some percussion. A very common thing you'll hear is a little percussive beat with the cones like this if you know the genre and you've heard of the M Doma song you probably already recognize it so add a couple of those but obviously don't become too crazy C with that and then with the collapse we'll just do like a little bit I think sometimes we finish the pattern like this and then sometimes I change it and do this and then we'll just add a couple of cowbell hits and that'll be pretty good for the percussion and with just this here we already have a very solid Russian Post Punk type drum pattern, now as for the hi-hats, sometimes you can do a little two-step pattern if you are doing this, although

The common thing you might hear with the hat pattern is like a double version of this, which I think would be like 16th notes or something like that might sound good depending on your track and what you're going for. that very easily by doing CR a and then pressing Shift, clicking here, then pressing Alt and scrolling down all the way and then doing Alt and scrolling up a little bit. What you can also do is press Alt R to randomize all the speeds, another thing you can do. What I want to add are some Tom hits, so if you take some Tom sounds like this, you can just add them here and there throughout the pattern and at the end maybe do a little kind of fill so you can also hear something else . is changing from a top hat to a walk during the chorus of the song, you can do a two step pattern or if you want you can also do a four step pattern and that sounds just as good, it just depends on your track. and the beat that you want to follow and last but not least, we're just going to put a little crash at the beginning and right there there's a solid little Russian

The sound has very low quality in everything you can hear, some songs that have clipping and crashes and a lot of unprofessional qualities, but that's what gives this genre the character that people love. In many genres, that rawness, that reality is what makes music so enjoyable to listen to. Basically what I'm trying to say is we're going to put rc20 on this, so let's take all the drums and then control L. we're going to control and click on all of them, right click on a mixer path empty mix to just this track and that sends them all to one bus, so anything we put on this bus will affect all the drum sounds and We'll make it yellow for the school bus color.

We'll just click on the drum for this and then adjust the settings a little bit. You don't have to use rc20 for this. You can use isotope vinyl or Cramer tape or whatever. another low five plugin you want two of the really important things here we're going to have a cut on the high end as you can see down here we're going to have a little boost on the low end we also have the tube distortion Things got a little better too, so that's a big money move because now we can move on to the bass.

Look at my cool strap, it has flowers on it, it's cool, you don't really need a base for this. use some kind of base plugin or in takes or something because the baselines are very easy but I have a base here so I'm going to use it and this is a little unconventional but for these beats I like to start with base and then build everything else around it just because baselines are very important, so with these baselines one of the most important things is just to build a sort of sinister foundation upon which to build your rhythm and a shape that What I like to do is play bass notes that are half a step apart, so you can hear how much tension is created with those two notes playing next to each other because it doesn't resolve, it doesn't go anywhere that feels satisfying, so which feels a little disjointed, but just do whatever it seems. suitable for your track, whatever it feels like after Punky, I should also mention that when you're playing you want to play more here towards the bridge because it gives your base a little bit nastier sound and I think you'll hear that. a lot into Russian Post Punk stuff and honestly that's all we need for the base, so starting with the base is pretty good because now we have an idea of ​​how to build everything around the track, we have key notes for all the tracks. guitar parts. and we can just build from there, so naturally the next thing we're going to do is grab our guitar and we're really going to start building melodies on top of the baseline because a lot of times these rhythms don't really have a proper chord progression on them. the one you're doing something like they like to have melodies stacked on top of each other to create a nice big guitar layer, so a common guitar melody that you might hear is just these repetitive one note melodies. things, so I'm going to add something like that, but I'm going to record it twice so we can duplicate the track, once on the left and once on the right, and this will mainly be something that we play for the choruses. and now I'm going to mess around and see what other tunes I can come up with.

It's better to record more and not use certain things than to not record enough and then have a very thin track with no layers that I'm going to do. a melody just following the root notes of the base, but then I'm going to go up a fifth, I think a fifth, then I'm also going to do a little harmonic melody there and then I'm also going to do a standard one. a little lead line with a lot of reverb, that's something you'll hear a lot of guitar solos that are just drenched in solid reverb, not bad, so once you've got enough guitar melodies down to where you've beefed up your track enough, but it doesn't feel overwhelming or crowded, we can move on to the last element of these rhythms, which is adding a couple of synthetic sounds.

I'm going to use a plugin called analog lab which I highly recommend because it's a great plugin. but you can use any free plugin that works for you or a real hardware synthesizer if you have one. I don't, so let's go with the plugin version. There are a lot of different synthesizers used in Mulad Duma's songs. small Moog action small DX7 action small benefit action 5 so what I like to do is just look up presets for those synths in the analog lab and then pick some sounds from there. I'm going to find one that's like a synth pad and one that's like a bell type sound, this VHS string preset will be perfect for the pad sound, it already has some of that lfi character so it'll be absolutely perfect and I just find this preset called campfire which will be perfect bell sound for the strings.

I'm just making a little pattern that follows the baseline at first, but then at the end it changes and creates a little more tension for the bell sound. We just got this little vibe going and now we pretty much have all the elements we're going to need to build this account, but before we do that we're going to talk a little bit about the mix, but not too much. I already showed you what we did with the account. drums I'm going to use a dbx 160 in mono because these drums should be in mono dbx 160 is one of my favorite ab ABS plugins.

It is an amazing drum compressor. I think I have it linked in the description below if you want to check it out. We're going to raise the threshold, lower the compression a little bit and then raise the output gain a little bit and that gives the drums a lot more punch, almost a little bit of distortion, which just adds. to the overall five bass feel and then don't forget we have to add a little bit of reverb here so I'm going to use the verb TR in this verb TR is a great plugin for reverb because you can change the size of the room. distance from the microphone to the sound source, all that kind of reverb and it's just a very cool realistic reverb link that's also in the description below and we want it to be a relatively small reverb, not too crazy, we'll probably even change it down a little bit of this reverb and then we'll give the snare specifically its own little reverb.

For this, I'm just going to use the normal fruity reverb for the bass. I just do a little bit of EQ and compression and then pretty much all the guitars have CLA guitars, some EQ and some reverb, all the synths will have a high cut and then on the master track, that's really the most important thing, we're going to put more rc20, but this time we are going to use the Generation 1 preset cassette. I think it is called first generation cassette. We turn down the noise and distortion a little bit and then make the EQ not so extreme and then really the last part of the beat.

Firstly we are going to focus on the layout of the track, the drums will stay pretty much the same throughout the entire track, if you want you can literally loop the same four to eight bars over and over again. throughout, but I personally find that some of the percussion stuff tends to get a little repetitive, so I recommend in certain parts to bring out the congas or the cowbell or whatever or just change the pattern every 8 to 16 bars and then of course you want to go back and forth between no top hats, then top hats during a verse or whatever and then ride during the chorus and then other than that just swapping out the different guitar and synth melodies during the different parts of the song. make the choruses a little thicker with more melodies make the verses a little thinner add some bridges where it's too thin maybe just base or something do all that a couple of times and voila, you've got your Russian Post Punk Trek, Honestly, that will help me today.
