How To: Make a LoFi Hip Hop Beat in LMMS

What's up, friends? My name is Felix and today I'm going to show you how to

make

a kind of old school hip-hop

beat

with lo-fi slash. I know some of you have been asking for a tutorial like this so here it is today I'm bringing it to you so before I get into this video I just wanted to say I have a

beat

Also put a link in the description to all the songs I've produced or my Instagram, it's not in the cloud and all that if you want to check it out yeah let's get started so the most important thing I would say for this video is your drums you want to

make

sure To have a specific type of sound for your drums, you need that type of lo-fi old school hip-hop sound and I would recommend just going to Google and searching with lo-fi old school hip-hop drums my personal favorite that I'll probably use mostly today is this drum kit from J Dilla and this is a very, very good drum kit that has almost every sound you have.

Will I ever need them, it's got like a billion of them as you can see, so yeah, that's what I'm probably going to use mostly today, so I'm going to pick out some drums and then I'll be right back. Well, friends, here we have our drums. I chose two snares, a kick drum, a closed hi-hat and an open hi-hat and a shaker, so that's how they sound, as you can hear, they're kind of lo-fi, you know, old school. kind of low quality sound and that's exactly what you want for this video. The next thing you want to look at is the tempo.

I'm going to set the tempo to a nice little bit, like 90 BPM, it's fun and then the next thing I'm going to do is bring in a triple oscillator because we're actually going to make our own bass for this video, which is going to be pretty epic. We won't be using an 808, we'll be using it as a sub bass. They call it because it has more sub frequencies and then the last thing I'm going to do is go get the soma latin orchestra plugin that I used in the last video, I think it was the last one if not.

If you don't have this plugin, all you have to do is go to good old Google, search for it, download it, and find it. I'm going to click on the piano because it looks pretty nice. It sounds like a piano and what I'm going to do is raise the sustain, raise the decay a little bit and lower it a little bit, so now we're going to have a nice little piano sounding and it's going to be good. So the first thing I'll probably do is make the drum and then I'll also do this so we have enough room to work with so yeah we've got pretty much everything we need now and now I'm going to get started on the beat so with the snare you'll put it here like this and then the hi-hats we'll do like this for now, but we're going to go in and change them just a little bit. later and now I'm going to add the kick okay so I want to do something here and that sounds too far away for what I'm trying to do here so what I'm going to do is hit and then I'm going to hit this come on bring it a little bit closer and I'm going to slow this down and now it's going to sound like this and as you can hear it has a little bit of swing to it.

Now it sounds pretty nice and nice, so I'm going to hold down control and select and then I'm going to drag this bad boy over here and then I'm going to do the same thing here, except I'm going to add this, so we're going to sound like this. Yes, a pretty standard pattern, but I think it sounds pretty good. The next thing we're going to do is come in here and do what I was told before and basically what we're going to do is Set this to 100, we're going to vary the speeds on these so it sounds a little more human and a little more like a real sound, so now it's going to be like this, as you can hear, it adds a little bit of bounce to it.

Now the last thing I'm going to do is press control and select all of this again and then I'm going to go to 200 and then I'm just going to press hold alt and then drag this just a little bit. a little bit, just a little bit to add a little bit more, you know humanity and you won't see them there, but they are there as you can hear, so yeah, it sounds pretty good. The next thing I'm going to do is add this hat open, but I'm going to turn it down a little bit because you know we don't want it to be too loud, this is what it sounds like with the hat open, okay, so I'm just going to remove this shaker because this is really now fits anywhere, the next thing I'm going to do is go into this triple oscillator and I'm just going to make the base that we're going to use, so I'm going to bring these two bad boys down.

I'm going to turn this down I'm going to turn I'm going to leave that there and then this I'm going to have like this and like that your bass should sound for now It's going to sound like this, but the other thing we have to do is come in here and go to the envelope, turn up the amount and then turn this up a little bit and this will be a lot lower, so okay, it sounds like this and then I'll make this a little bit longer, that sounds good for now. but I'm going to remove that because we're going to make the base according to the chords that we make and actually that means that next are the chords, so for this I like to have this full screen because it gives me a little bit more of you.

I know the control and I'll do it like I normally do in the key of minor and I'll transpose it later, so the first thing we're going to do is because this is on the last note, it's going to play this. little note, we'll put it on one and then we'll change it back to the last note and now we can move it and it doesn't have to be a very long note, so now I'm going to play with some chords and I'll get Coming back to you guys, okay, this That's what I have so far.

It sounds a little muddy, but once we transpose it, I'll transpose it up so it sounds higher in pitch and then it will sound a lot better than but, of course. Now, that's what it sounds like, so yeah, that's how it's done so far. Another thing I did was go into the actual plugin. I went here and then I clicked on the release and then I turned it up a little bit to make it sound better, yeah. What I'm going to do is copy this header, a new baseline there, paste it and then I'm going to come back here and then I'm going to delete all the notes and then I'm going to come back to myself and listen to what What I'm going to do is make this longer and add more variation so that it doesn't sounds so repetitive and boring, so I'm going to press Ctrl and then click and select all of these and hold down Shift. click and drag it and now you have two of them and now what I'm going to do is alter some of these notes so that they have a different second.

Well everyone, I'm back and I made the second one. half the small variation in the pattern and it sounds like this so yeah, I think it sounds pretty good and pretty good. The next thing we're going to do is we're going to come out of here and we're going to come in here and with the triple oscillator with a little bit of bass that we made, we're going to figure out the notes from here and we can actually do that, we can press Ctrl + Shift at the same time and then select all of these bad guys and now press Ctrl C and now.

Let's go back to here piano roll ctrl v boom now you have all the notes of the pattern that you have created and these are a little bit high so we will press ctrl and then down and there will be a little bit of click on eNOS So let's go into the oscillator triple and raise it a little. Now what we're going to do is remember to shorten them a little bit. Okay, so I adjusted the length of some of these basses. notes and now it's going to sound like this, but now remember what I'm going to do is transpose this pattern here, so I'm going to press Shift and then click up a few times until I see what it sounds like, I think. that sounds pretty good, so now we just have to remember what note it starts on and this note here is an e, so let's go back to zero and then put this on E and it'll probably go to this one, but I'm not sure that Maybe it has I have to change the piano to accommodate the bass because I think it sounds a little low.

I went up a little bit more, so I'll go up two or three. I think it sounds good, but now we have to figure out what although this is on and this note is 8g, so I'm going to come back here and now it's a G, so I think it sounds pretty good now that we're done, that's what everything sounds like on this one. moment, so I won't do it. lie, I think it sounded pretty good, so now I'm going to do something I've never done before on this channel, I don't think so, and it's a mess of effects.

I really want this trigger oscillator, a little bad boy thing here. to make it sound more stereo and what I'm going to do is I'm going to go in here and then I'm going to add one of these click here go to the stereo stereo enhancer effect and then I'm going to go into the triple oscillator hit. that up to one and now give this all the way wide and now your base is going to sound really wide in your ears, okay, so I think it sounded pretty good. I think the last thing I'm going to do is add I'm going to add another sonatina Orchestra I'm just going to add a little bit of strings I think I'm just going to play the violin and then I'm going to copy and paste, so I think that adds a nice little accent there and now We're almost done, all we have to do is separate the rhythm and we'll finish well, so that concludes this video.
