Here's Why the Jaguar XJ220 Is the Craziest 1990s Supercar

May 09, 2020
This is a 1994 Jaguar XJ220 and it's one of my favorite cars of all time because it's not just a

supercar

, it's a weird

supercar

. You see cars like the ferrari f40, the aventador and the bugatti veyron, everyone knows them. all the press, but this car is just as special and yet it is not as celebrated or as well known, but today you will know because I am going to do something that I always wanted to do. To review the

xj220

, I borrowed this xj 220 from Auto Sport Designs, which is

here

on Long Island, New York, Autosport Designs has one of the best inventories of any dealership I've ever been to, a truly amazing mix of cars, They also supplied the Aston Martin Lagonda that I reviewed, so of course they would be sports car designs that would have an

xj220

, so let's talk about the basics of the xj220 first.
here s why the jaguar xj220 is the craziest 1990s supercar
This is a mid-engine supercar and Jaguar made around 280 of these worldwide during the production of this car from 1992 to 1994. It was now called the xj220 because it could theoretically reach 220 miles per hour, although that never happened. Magazine testing at the time couldn't pass around 210 and even when Jaguar removed the catalytic converters and rev limiter I can only get it to 217 but no faster and that wasn't the only unfulfilled promise with the xj220 now, When the steering When the production version came out four years later, rear-wheel steering was gone, all-wheel drive was gone, the scissor doors were gone, and the mid-mounted V12 had been swapped for a turbocharged V6.

to get its deposits back, but even with all the changes the xj 220 still ran, the engine made 540 horsepower and 475 pound-feet of torque and this was the fastest production car in the world for a year until that the mclaren f1 appeared and won. Unfortunately, the market didn't really seem to care. Jaguar had a lot of trouble selling the xj220 and they ended production in early 1994 after selling around 280 units in the years since this became a forgotten supercar, prices have stayed low and t

here s why the jaguar xj220 is the craziest 1990s supercar
Well I'm going to start with the quirks and features of the XJ 220 by talking about just getting in and that means I start with the key. Now the xj 220 used a pretty standard Jaguar key for that era, but still. It's cool to see that it has the jack on top and then it's a cylinder that was very different from basically any other flat wrench at the time. Now another interesting thing about getting into the xj220 is the door handle. You can see it here, it's this little half. circle on the door and then this kind of oval piece on the body, you put your hand in there and pull it and that's how you open the doors of the xj220, but none of that is the

craziest

thing about getting into the xj220, one of the most crazy is the alarm - if you leave your xj220 unlocked and parked for a while the alarm will go off by itself and obviously the alarm will go off by itself if you lock it and then when you go and try to open the door or get into the . a tremendously intimidating alarm sound this will stop thieves no one is stealing your xj 220 now anyway to stop that you press this little button on the key fob which opens the door and then you can get in unfortunately getting into the xj220 is easier said than done and I say this because the xj220 has one of the

craziest

door situations I have ever seen, specifically the door only opens this far, this is the door fully open now, it may seem to you like there is enough room to get in, so It seemed like it to me. when I first saw it open, but when you try to get in, you'll see the problem, there's just not much room to get into this car, but if you get stuck enough, you can get in.
here s why the jaguar xj220 is the craziest 1990s supercar
I have no idea why the door doesn't open more, one of the quirks of the xj220, but once you get inside you are very rewarded because there are many more quirks of the xj220 to explore, starting with the door cell, which is actually incredibly Huge, absolutely ridiculous. you have to go over it because it's so wide there's a lot of material there, but you'll also see on the door cell that this car says 128. I'm guessing that's the production number, the assembly number of this particular xj220 and it says that on both sides. the driver side door sill and the passenger side door sill so you can show off to your passenger what the number of your xj220 is now once you get into that door cell probably the first thing you Notice when you get into this car is that above you is a sunroof.
This is something I never knew about the to do about it is that this car was manufactured in the United Kingdom. They don't really have hot sunny days there so they don't think about those things and this fixed sunroof without cover is the result of that. And speaking of windows, let's analyze which ones. on the door to control them you have window switches in the middle of the center console and they work like normal window switches, push them down the window goes down, the interesting thing about the windows, although around the edge of the door you can see there are this black color. molding or molding on the door, that's pretty common, but what's not so common when you roll the window all the way up, it actually rolls over the top of the door molding, which I don't think I've seen before, usually that molding acts as a water seal to keep things out but on this car the windows roll up over the top not sure why or what the problem is but thats how the xj 220 works and speaking of the windows that They go up and down, it's worth noting that when the windows are rolled down they don't go all the way down, they come close but not all the way on the XJ220.
Now next I want to talk about the gauge cluster on the xj220. You can see that it is a very sensible thing to do. There's not a bunch of weird logos or anything weird there, it's just a simple, straightforward set of gauges and you can see it's in kilometers per hour. The xj 220 was never sold new in North America in the United States. Now it did not comply with US regulations. That meant you couldn't actually import an xj 220 until it was 25 years old to comply with US regulations, but over the years many xj220s were included under the exhibition or exhibition exemption, which allows you to bring certain important low-production cars for display. or for display purposes and this is one of those cars that was brought here for display or display now that the xj220 is 25 years old, although you can import them at will, but anyway, back to the gauges in the gauge cluster area , you can see there are six.
The gauges are the speedometer, the normal tachometer, then the oil pressure, oil temperature, fuel gauge and engine temperature gauge, all pretty standard, but there are additional gauges besides those and they are mounted on the panel of the driver's door. The xj220 has four more gauges mounted. On the driver's door panel it's very unusual, you won't see that on many cars, but you will on this one. The four gauges are: you have a clock, you have the battery voltage gauge, you have the boost gauge, since this is a turbocharged car, and you have what I believe is the transmission temperature reading, I believe that is what that little screen is trying to mean and those are the four additional gauges and when you close the door you can see they fit in there and it gives the driver a cockpit feel because now you have all these gauges around you coming out of the door panel.
It's actually a really cool look. Speaking of the driver's door panel, it's worth noting that that door panel has a leather padded surface designed so that you can rest your arm while driving, but since the door sill is so wide you can't reach it. , you won't be able to rest your arm there unless you stretch out to do so so the space is somewhat useless, it's worth noting that also in the door panel area you have a small velvet lined storage compartment where you can store things like a wallet or sunglasses while driving another interesting item worth mentioning on the door panel you have the door latch which is frankly a pretty standard door light just pull it to open the door , there's nothing special or unusual about that, now, next move towards the car, another interesting element that you see is the steering wheel and in the middle you have this angry one.

jaguar

cat logo they were using at the time you push the center of the steering wheel and that's the horn so how does the horn sound on a jaguar xj220?
Listen now it comes out of the steering column like in most cars you have. the wiper heads and turn signals there's nothing particularly unusual here except that the turn signal head also contains the headlights there is a small switch on the turn signal head that allows you to turn on the headlights, which It's a little strange but otherwise it works like a normal turn signal and on the right you have the windshield wiper which works like a pretty normal windshield wiper. It also has a switch but that allows you to control the speed of the intermittent wipers, which is pretty standard, nothing unusual there now.
Next I want to talk about mirrors. The power mirror control is to the left of the steering column and is fairly standard. It's a switch that you turn in one direction or another and then move it to move the mirrors. It's quite simple, but mirrors are not as simple as they seem at first glance. Look at this on the driver's side. You can see I open the door and the mirror stays in place because it's mounted on the passenger side fender. I open the door and the mirror moves. Because it is door mounted the mirrors on this car are in two different places which is something you don't see very often and the reason is that if they had mounted the passenger mirror on the fender it would be blocked by the stack if you were really trying to see behind you then they had to pull the mirror forward and that way you can see through it when you drive the xj220 and next we move on to the starting procedure for this car which is Quite unusual to start it first, you put the key in the ignition and turn it, which is pretty standard, but then you press this unlabeled red button next to the ignition and that actually turns it on and starts the car.
It's kind of a precursor to all the Engine Start Buttons that we have below today, another interesting element here on the center console. You can see, obviously, that this car is manual. All xj220s had a manual transmission and interestingly it is a five speed manual and not a six speed performance car. They were starting to get six-speed manual transmissions in the early '90s, but the Jaguar opted for a tried-and-true five-speed for some reason. Another interesting element here are the seats, you can see they say xj220 on top which is cool. These nice seats are heavily bolstered but not too thick and I really like the look and feel of them.
They are pretty good. They are manually controlled, they are not electric seats, so if you want to move them you have to pull the levers and that kind of thing, but those are the seats in the jaguar xj220 and our next interesting element in the driver's foot, well, you have the pedals down there obviously interestingly two of the pedals have the letter j on them the clutch pedal and the brake pedal both say j I guess j for jaguar not sure how many people notice not sure why they chose j and they don't like the cat logo or anything frankly but that's what the pedals on this car say j now you know and next The next interesting quirk of the xj220 is the dome lights that are mounted on this panel which is basically glued on the sunroof.
In the middle you have a giant ceiling light that turns on when you open the doors andOn the sides. Individual personal reading lights, press these little buttons and then they will light up so you can read while driving in your xj220 and then we move on to the climate control situation on the xj220 now the climate controls themselves are pretty normal. Standard are just these three dials in the middle which look like what you would have gotten on basically any other car from the

1990s

, but the air vents are quite unusual. I'll start with the fact that the driver has four, you have two on top on the left and two on the right, four individual air vents just for the driver, which I personally find a little excessive, although I must admit it helps balance part of the giant sunroof effect, now also on the passenger side.
It has two individual air vents and you can see that they are placed on the dash, right where an airbag would be. The xj220 does not have an airbag on the passenger side. Instead, you get those air vents, which was a decision you were probably excited about because it kept you comfortable. until you had an accident and then you wish they had made a different decision nowSpeaking of the passenger side inside the xj220, there are many other interesting elements on the passenger side, starting with the grab handle that comes out of the center console and you can see that you can put your hand around it so you can hang on for dear life when this car is going 220 miles per hour 217 miles per hour, another interesting element on the passenger side again, you have that padded area where you can rest your arm while you're sitting there and again you have that little storage space. area inside the door where you can store things, but the passenger side also has an additional storage area between the seat and the door sill.
You can see there is another little velvet storage area where you can put really small items, now the driver's side doesn't have one. that and the reason is that the driver's side has the handbrake on that side, which was customary in 1990 supercars to mount the handbrake between the driver's seat and the steering wheel, but on the passenger side they use it to storage and talking about storage. In the xj 220, another item worth noting is that there is storage behind the seats. You can see that there is a shelf here where you can store things and there is a small leather storage bag where you can put other things that you don't want to fly around.
For now, the storage behind the seats is a welcome addition in this interior because there isn't much more storage, this car doesn't have a glove box where you can put things and it also doesn't have center console storage, so what you have behind the seats is basically the biggest one. Storage can be had inside and by the way, speaking of the passenger side, it's worth noting that this is obviously a left-hand drive xj220, but as the xj220 was a British car and had a lot of interest from buyers in Britain, then there was a point. Hand-drive examples also built around 70 right-hand drive xj220s compared to around 200 left-hand drive models like this now, even though right-hand drive cars were the minority of xj220s, making which didn't stop Jaguar from putting all the latches are there to open the various compartments of the car, so even though this is a left hand drive car, just like the bonnet latches, the boot latches are on the passenger side, where they would make more sense in a right-hand drive. car so let's talk about those compartments now the latch to open the front compartment is in the passenger side footwell and you can see it has a little picture of an xj 220 with the front open you pull it and the compartment opens Forward. which is obviously the front trunk or front luggage compartment, except when you open it you realize that it's not actually a trunk.
You can see it has two giant fans up here to help cool this car and in fact there is a warning label that specifically says this is not a trunk, don't put any luggage in here because then the car will overheat, in fact, the label says it will overheat severely, it will be very bad, so you can't use this front compartment for any type of storage, it's just for these. fans, so with that in mind, you're probably wondering where exactly the storage compartment is on this thing. Well it turns out that the xj220 has two rear hatches, one of them is the engine cover, you open it and you go into the engine compartment, the other is the actual luggage compartment that is here now so you can access these compartments, the Small latches are behind the passenger seat on the right, although it's worth noting that it's a latch to open the engine compartment, but it's a button to open. the trunk the luggage compartment you press that button and then it opens the luggage compartment then you come back here and you can open it and that gives you access to the luggage compartment the trunk the trunk of your jaguar xj220 except as you can Look, it's tremendously small, it's a quite large surface, but it does not reach very low.
You have no room for basically anything. There's no way you can put any kind of luggage back here, but you do have a little space to put small things. items, it also has a small additional storage compartment at the front of the cargo area, sort of against the engine compartment, where you can put other small items if you don't want them in the larger area and then next to it, can Look, you have the CD changer. This is the cargo space you had when you bought an xj220. Anyway, next I'm going to close the trunk and move on to the outside of the xj220 because there's a lot to do.
It covers the exterior of this car and I want to talk about its most obvious feature or perhaps its quirk, and that would be its length. This vehicle measures 194.1 inches long, making it just four inches shorter than a new Ford Explorer, which is a three-row family. SUV made 25 years later, if you compare the not this thing. No, and it's still two and a half feet longer. The sheer size of this thing no doubt contributed to its bad salespeople seeing how big it was and just thinking there was no way it could really be any kind of nimble, exciting supercar. and that was one of the factors that made them stay away and not buy it, it is absolutely huge and then we will move on to other exterior design elements of the xj220.
I want to start with this now in Europe, it is mandatory that they have turn signals on the sides of the car, many cars integrate them into the mirrors, that is why you see so many cars with turn signals in the mirrors, the xj220 did not have such integration, it was just an orange square mounted on the doors, there was no attempt to hide or hide it it was there, that's what you have now to me, it's always been very strange that they stuck that little orange square on the side of the car and it didn't They made no effort to hide that turn signal because they made a lot of effort to hide the headlights, this car comes from the era of pop-up headlights, but Jaguar didn't want to have boring normal pop-up headlights, so instead you turn on the headlights and this happens now let's see again what's happening is basically this little cover over the headlights is pulled down exposing the headlights so they can be turned on and that's how this cover goes away and the headlights appear now when you turn off the headlights the cover goes back up and into place and then the headlights are covered Again and this car retains its aerodynamic shape, these are like the opposite of pop-up headlights, the lights are always fixed and the cover opens to reveal them, a detail of very, very interesting design and obviously when it's covered it has a nice slippery shape. for top speed racing now another interesting element regarding the lighting at the front of this car, the headlight compartment does not contain the turn signals because of course then it would have to do its little trick every time you turn on the turn signal, so instead The turn signal is down here and it's very, very small and very, very low.
You probably won't notice an xj 220 sign if you have one behind you. Now when you move to the rear you can see that the taillights are also hidden. On this car, although I'm not entirely sure why, you can see that it has normal brake lights, tail lights, reverse lights, turn signals, but then they are hidden behind this grille that covers like half of its visible area. It's very strange. They could have just put the grill in the middle and kept the lights off but they didn't so those are the taillights on a jaguar xj220. Now next we move on to one of my other favorite exterior design details on this car and that would be Sean the wheels.
I love this wheel design, mainly because it is the least supercar-like wheel ever installed on a supercar in the long history of supercars. All exotic cars have these really aggressive, mean looking wheels. This thing has these things that look like plates. All silver, they look like they should be in a Mybach or something, but instead they're in a 200 mile per hour supercar. I suspect the reason they did this is to give it as flat a surface as possible so it would be as aerodynamic as possible, which could allow it to reach higher top speeds. However this is the xj 220 wheel 17 inches front, 18 inches rear and has a 345 wide rear tire which was a really wide tire size back then and is still impressive. wide nowadays, this thing has huge tires.
Now, the next absolutely amazing detail on this car is the rear antenna. Many 90's cars had antennas that activated when you turned on the radio, it's not that unusual, yeah you can see where I'm going. this the xj220 also turns on the radio and the antenna rises about five feet from the body and when it's up it looks so stupid it's just ridiculous that they put this antenna on a 200 mile per hour supercar but they did and that The antenna It goes up and down when you turn the stereo on and off and then there is another interesting element near the antenna which would be the fuel door.
For starters, you can see that it looks great, but it also performs very well. Stick your finger into this little tab that says Jaguar, pull it down and then turn it to the side and then you can remove the little cap and insert fuel into your xj 220. Now an interesting element is the fact that you can also lock. In case you were nervous that someone might try to steal fuel from your xj220, I'm not sure how common that was, but you had the option and then another exterior item worth discussing. I want to talk about the badges because this car doesn't really have all that. a lot and in fact you can see there's no badge here that says exactly what it is.
Instead, you had that angry cat badge a little further down, integrated into the small front grille of this car and you can see that it's now on the back. It had the brand name Jaguar written above the rear grill so you would know what it was if you came up behind it. My favorite badge, however, is right in front of the rear wheels. You can see it says xj220, the only external xj220 badge on this car. looks great now its worth noting that the angry jaguar logo also appeared in the center of the wheels of this car, this car had center locking wheels which was becoming a thing in the supercar world when this car went on sale and in the center of its center. lock the wheels, you've got that angry jaguar logo and next we move on to the xj220's engine and as I mentioned it's a turbocharged v6, 3.5 liter turbo v6, 540 horsepower, 475 pound-feet of torque and the first thing you notice when you look in the engine bay of this car it is the amount of space left that has caught my attention every time I have seen one of these, a V16 could have been put in here and of course Jaguar's original intention was to put a V12. but it was too expensive and there were emissions certification issues, so they went with this turbo v6.
Now in the modern world, putting a smaller turbocharged engine in a supercar seems pretty reasonable. The new Ford GT has a turbo V6, but to give you a little context when this. The car was new, no one was making everything have at least a V8, most of them had V12s and coming out with a V6 really disappointed a lot of people and I think it was really the engine, not the lack of all-wheel drive or scissor doors . but to the engine that drove the low sales figures of this car, now to help combat thelow sales figures, Jaguar came up with the idea that there was a racing series with the xj 220 to try to generate interest in this car.
It was called Fast Masters and they used it. Retired racing drivers who weren't doing anything else brought them all to Indianapolis and had them race xj220s, but the cars didn't race on the big oval Indy 500 track, they raced on a short track in the infield, which which was a The problem Denise McCluggage, writing for Auto Week, said it was like racing thoroughbred horses around the dining room table. The cars were too big and were always crashing into each other with these old racing drivers behind the wheel. Nowadays, you can go to YouTube and find. old clips of fast masters racing with these jaguar let's not go through their accessories autosport designs has this box of accessories that have stayed with this car since it was new and I'm going to show you some of the highlights starting with this first aid kit still in its plastic, the first aid kit auxilios original jaguar xj220 that is An interesting article and I honestly wonder what is there, although I will leave it for the next owner to discover now.
Our next interesting item is this little white folder that says xj220 on the cover. You open it and it is confirmation that you received. an allocation of the xj220 and you can see it says that you have been officially allocated one of the cars, of course history tells us that they only made about 280 cars, as I mentioned they had to shorten production, but this is what you got if you were lucky To get an . They have a really cool silver look. Now on the first page of the owner's manual you can see the number 350 again. Only 350 of the limited edition xj220 will be produced.
They didn't hit that number, but they printed it in the owner's manual. Now I checked the owner's manual, it's not very big and there's nothing particularly interesting or unusual in here, although I do like that on page five it talks about the fire extinguisher. He says occupants of this vehicle are strongly advised to become very familiar with the operation of the fire extinguisher, of course. are, it's a British vehicle now the other books here you have the owner's manual for the audio system you have the sales and service directory and you have the European emergency assistance book now you open this and it explains what to do in an emergency, what to do number you call in each European country and It also says that you should have the following information available: your name, your location, your Jaguar model and then, in parentheses, print xj220 in case you forgot that you were driving an xj 220.
There is a small useful tip that will allow you to remember in case it breaks down and those are the peculiarities and characteristics of the jaguar xj220, now is the time to do it, it is time to take it out on the road and see how well it drives driving the xj 220 and so on fulfilling mine's childhood dream, this is great. The first thing you notice when you get into this car. I was maneuvering in the parking lot. The direction is incredibly heavy, too heavy to the point where you just hate your life, even if it's normal. turning like that is surprisingly difficult because the steering is like that now, once you get going, obviously, which is the case with cars without power steering, things even out and you're fine, another thing I noticed, I wouldn't call the brakes bad, but you have to make a deep stab to really get stuck you really have to push them down which surprises me in a car like this although thinking about the f40 it was a similar situation and an interesting thing you know you drive this car and you think You're probably the only person on the planet who's driving one of these right now, which isn't something I think about in almost any of the cars I drive, no matter how rare they are, but this thing has only 280 of these and not many.
Driven this one it has only done 5,500 kilometers like 3,000 miles now the sound there is no doubt there is no V12 um you know going with the turbo 6 obviously we are going to lose some sound so it could have been a v12 beyond that , although a lot of people complained about the specific sound of this engine when this car was new and it definitely doesn't have a v8 or a v10, not even a flat 6 sound, right now I'm sitting in There's a lot of traffic here because of a train so that I'm crawling by the clutch. Actually, it's not that bad, it's heavy, there's no doubt about that, eh, but it's not that heavy, since it's not so bad that you can't go and have it.
In heavy traffic after a while you'll probably get tired of it, but it's not really horrible like the Countach. Also, it's worth noting that there is surprisingly a lot of space. The pedal box has a decent amount of space. My knees are right against the board. but they're not doing it, it's hot in here, the air conditioning and the vents that I made fun of earlier for being so many, suddenly you start to understand why, because it's really hot because of that thing. Driving the car actually feels normal. This one is in very very good condition and even just starting it up and running it when I was filming the previous part, it starts with the first crank, feels good and surprised me.
With that I was thinking it was going to be problematic, maybe some of them are, but this one is nice and drives like that too. Now, driving this car on a curvier, higher-speed kind of road, you start to appreciate the steering. That was very annoying when driving it at low speeds, it's still heavy and in corners it's very nice, it obviously lightens up from low speeds but it feels like you're really controlling the car so there's not a lot of vagueness, there's a little in the center. but not much, yes, matching the revs and downshifting is not that difficult.
I'm taking it slow and trying to be careful because it's a valuable car and whatever it is, I'm not messing anything up, but it's surprisingly doable in this car, so it's surprising. how much physical car is behind me when I look in the mirror and see all that it's like wow well the stories I've heard about this car and its turbo are clearly true, you don't feel much acceleration until the turbos start to kick in and then things really heat up in terms of acceleration, but it feels like an old school turbo car where you really have to get into it and then it knocks you back. moves the steering starts to feel light it's said that's really some speed surprisingly yeah this car isn't just a fast 90's exotic car it's still pretty fast yeah it's interesting to drive um it seems like most of the people don't really know it or pay attention or care, it doesn't look like an aventador or whatever, but if you know it scares you and I think a lot of car people know that they are aware of this car, most people have never seen one of these before, it's really A special treat to see one, drive one, be in one.
I mean, it's great. I've always wondered about this car. I've always wondered about the four indicators on the door and it's great to be able to see it in person. and really experience it and that is the jaguar xj220. This is not one of the most agile supercars ever made given its large size and it is not one of the most famous supercars ever made as it is a jaguar with a v6 and not a ferrari or a porsche. or a lamborghini or a bugatti, but it's one of the most special supercars ever made, at least for me, and I loved spending the day with the xj212 and now it's time to give this car a doug score starting with the categories and weekend style.
The xj220 is beautiful, but its round styling dates it considerably and it gets a 7 out of 10. Acceleration is 0-60 in 3.6 seconds and it gets an 8 out of 10. Handling is fine, depends on the speed at which go At low speeds it's too heavy and at high speeds it's too light, but for most drivers it's quite enjoyable, getting a 6 out of 10. The fun factor is high, the novelty of the car is huge and the power delivery is incredible. and it gets an 8 out of 10. finally cool factor and the few easy cars in this one are cooler and it gets a 10 out of 10 for a total weekend score of 39 out of 50.
Next up are the daily categories and features it doesn't have a lot and gets a 2 out of 10. comfort is okay, the cabin is quite small, entry and exit is difficult and the sunroof makes things so hot it gets a 3 out of 10. quality is okay, the interior is quite nice but reliability is a disaster the main thing The shop that works with these is in the UK and there is a long way to send your car just for service and it gets a 4 out of 10.
