More Interesting Facts About,

here s why the 2020 jeep gladiator is the hottest new truck...

Right now all Gladiators come with the same engine, a 3.6-liter V6 with 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, and you can get an eight-speed automatic. or a six-speed manual. Now Jeep says that next year the Gladiator will also add a diesel version with 260 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque, which is a really impressive figure, worth it too. Considering every gladiator is a convertible, yes every gladiator, even this one that appears to have a fixed roof, is a convertible, meaning the gladiator joins the ranks of convertible pickup trucks with esteemed luminaries like the chevy ssr and the dodge dakota convertible, and so on with the introduction.
here s why the 2020 jeep gladiator is the hottest new truck
Of the way, it's time to dive into the gladiator first, I'll show you all its interesting quirks and features, then I'll take it out on the road and drive it and then test it. score and for more of my thoughts on the gladiator, click the link below to visit autotrader.com oversteer where I've also compiled a list of the most expensive pickup trucks currently for sale on autotrader. Alright, I'm going to start with the quirks. and features of the gladiator with roof now I mentioned that all gladiators are convertible including this one and that is true, there are two different roofs offered on the gladiator, one of them that you see here is the hardtop and on this vehicle it is painted to match. the body and it really looks like it is fixed in place, but it is not.
here s why the 2020 jeep gladiator is the hottest new truck
The hardtop can be removed completely if you want. I'll show you how to do it. We'll start with the front panels. Now there are two. panels over the front seats like on the regular Wrangler and to remove them you first undo a couple of latches, there are four in total on each panel, you undo them all and then from there it's actually very simple, you just go up and remove one of the panels of the roof and then you go up the other side and remove the other roof panel and so in about 30 seconds the front of the hardtop model has now become a convertible, but once you have removed those panels From the front roof, you can see that the back of the roof is still in place, so you're thinking, well, it's all a convertible.
No, not at all, you can remove the entire back of the hardtop and have a full open-air experience, but it is a little more difficult, requires some tools because there are some bolts that hold it in place, not just latches that hold it in place. they open, and also requires you to disconnect the electrical connection between the car and the rear defroster. The top has a real rear window with a defroster so if you want to remove the rear of the hardtop you have to disconnect that connection but they have made it pretty easy to do and I actually saw some people in jeeps remove the rear of the hardtop in about five minutes, obviously they knew what they were doing, but if you plan on removing the hardtop and reinstalling it all the time, you could get to that level pretty easily too.
Now for me one of the most interesting parts of the hardtop. The main situation is the fact that the back of the cab of this truck does not have the third brake light, virtually every other truck you will see has the third brake light up here, but since you can remove the hardtop, the Jeep couldn't do it. I didn't put the third brake light there since you can remove it, so they had to put the third brake light here on the back of the tailgate and the problem with that is if you want to mount a bike rack back here, it comes out from the trailer hitch will block the third brake light and as a result, to comply with regulations, Jeep does not offer rear hitch mounted bike racks for this car, obviously you can still buy one from another manufacturer and stick it on. here, but it will block access to the third brake light.
Another interesting thing worth mentioning about the hardtop gladiator is the fact that it has a real rear window, a glass one, and as I mentioned before, it has a defogger running through it. It even has a slightly smaller portion of a window inside that you can open like most trucks do if you get the hardtop version of the Gladiator and I suspect the vast majority of buyers will actually have a completely closed window. The cabin situation is like most trucks and doesn't become a convertible unless you start removing and disassembling things. Now next I want to talk about the soft top version of the Gladiator, obviously this is not the soft top version but it did have it. the opportunity to play with the soft top version and obviously it's much easier to enjoy an outdoor experience if you get the soft top so the process is quite simple.
The rear window of the soft top is plastic instead of a real glass window like This, as you can see, is just a simple flimsy plastic window and if you want to remove it first, start by removing this little piece of fabric on the side , you take it out of this little area where it attaches and then you just pull. remove it, it's actually pretty simple, then you go to the other side, do basically the same thing and from there all you have to do is just slide the rear window out and then the whole rear window situation goes away, that process took me about a minute in total, from there to go into fully convertible mode, it's even easier: just open two latches on the top of the windshield and then you have to stand on top of the gladiator and simply pull back the top and the top flips back as if it were a The convertible top is pretty simple now.
One interesting thing about the folded back convertible top and the gladiator is the fact that when it is folded back and you are enjoying your gladiator outdoors, the top rests on the back of the top. from above, the back seat jeep told me they did this, they didn't want the top to fold down into the bed in case you were carrying things in the bed, they didn't want the top to have to fold down there and then you could No goes into convertible mode unless the bed is empty and that's why the top rests there. If you want to completely remove the top again you will need some tools, you will just have to undo the hinges and then you can pull it off.
Now take off the top completely, although you take the top off and put it back on this knee, it gets a little cumbersome. It's worth noting that there's no Velcro, no straps, no loops, no hooks, no little buttons you have to line up and snap into place. So it's a lot easier than taking the top on and off on most other convertible SUVs, older Wranglers, my Land Rover Defender obviously not as easy as a power top where you just push a button and it comes back on. , but it's easier than me. hoping now is the time to talk about the bed.
I never thought I'd be talking about a truck bed in a factory Jeep Wrangler, but I'm glad I lived to see the day I mentioned before, the gladiator it is. It is only available in four doors and it is also only available with a five foot bed, this will upset people who wanted a true long bed pickup from this vehicle, but I asked Jeep about this and they told me that eighty percent of the medium-sized pickup truck segment are crew. four-door cab with a five-foot bed, so they wanted to go after the meatiest part of the segment, plus Jeep also told me that the five-foot truck bed fits 94 of all the motorcycles currently on sale . 94 fit on this platform now.
Before I get in the bed, one thing I like about this bed is that Jeep offers this tonneau cover from the factory that has a couple of nice features, for example, it locks with the tailgate, so if you have the tailgate closed back you can't. open the lid and it works as effectively as a trunk, you can put things back in here and lock them in place and people can't really get in unless they cut this off, so it closes with the back door, now an interesting thing the tenno cover when you open the tailgate to access the bed there is a position of the tonneau cover where you can fold it back just one fold, you don't have to unlock anything, you don't have to fold it completely In the back, you can just fold a small portion of the front back and that gives you access to the bed and you can even have the back door closed and access the bed for small items with this slightly folded back position now if you have larger items. you want to load back up here with the tonneau cover in place it's pretty easy to get it out of the way all you have to do to unlock it is pull on these little red straps and then you just start folding it back and you fold it up and it folds up and it folds up giving you access to basically the entire bed without having to remove the tonneau cover.
Some covers are just one piece and you have to remove them, but this can be folded up and you can put back basically anything you want. the bed obviously if you want you can also remove the tunnel if you have something larger that you want to put back in here and then of course when you want to protect your items again just fold it into place make sure it closes and then is when you close this, you close this and you can lock everything again. It's a pretty simple operation now regarding the box itself. It's pretty much like the bed of a pickup truck, nothing particularly exciting, unusual or interesting back here, I really like that fact. there's an outlet back here and it's covered by this plastic cover so it doesn't get damaged by water or anything you might have moving around in the bed if you want to turn on the outlet you press a little button on the inside to the left of the steering wheel that you turn it on, then you can plug in things back here like your toaster and you can have toast in your gladiator's bed and by the way, it's worth noting that the jeep says the gladiator has an 800. pound payload capacity, which Which makes this the best in its class, better than all the real trucks it competes with, like the Tacoma, Ranger, Colorado, etc.
That is amazing. Next we move inside the gladiator and move on to my favorite feature in this entire vehicle and that Can you get the gladiator with a built in portable bluetooth speaker? Check this out if you fold the back seat forward on the passenger side you can see hidden behind it is a bluetooth speaker inside a docking station that recharges every time the speaker is attached. there it charges, now you can take the speaker out of its rechargeable docking station and then you can pair it with your phone and take it anywhere you don't have to have it like the car on or have the bluetooth speaker near the car, it's just a bluetooth speaker normal like the one you would buy so you can park the car and then go to the beach, go camping, do whatever, go on a hike and you'll have your bluetooth speaker with you which is so cool it comes in the car and it's always charged .
Now perhaps the most interesting thing about this Bluetooth speaker is the fact that Jeep told me that they designed it to be automotive grade, so it's much more durable than your average Bluetooth speaker. Some of the things I was told about him were strange. It has a hook so you can hang it from a tree and they said you can submerge it underwater for 30 minutes and it still works which is fine, when am I going to do that with a bluetooth speaker? The point is that you have one built in. bluetooth speaker in your vehicle, which is a really smart idea. Now next comes another great idea with the Gladiator in the same vicinity and that is the fact that there is lockable storage under the rear seats.
If you lift up the rear seats you can see that there is a little storage compartment under here and the good thing is that the storage compartment is divided 60 40 like the seats and that means that you can lift the seats and use the storage compartment while you have a passenger sitting in the other seat, which is a very good idea, but the best part of this idea is the fact that it can be locked. You can store whatever you want down here and then you can see there's a little key lock next to the headrest, there's one on the driver's side and there's another one.
On the passenger side, once you have stored whatever you want here, you can lock the seats in place and keep your items safe and no one will be able to access them. The Jeep says these lockable compartments under the seats are about three and a half cubic feet. The storage space is not much, but it is enough that you can store your valuables in there, lock them up and keep them safe if you are hiking or camping and don't have the cover to keep your things hidden and locked. It is a very good idea and another good idea under the rear seats and specifically under the driver's side rear seat is bolt storage.
You may be wondering why this is here, because if you decide to remove the windshield or remove it. Outside the doors obviously there are some bolts you need to take out and then you won't have a place to put them, they could get lost but with this little bolt storage container they won't and you can see it's clearly marked where you put them all. the bolts so you put them in the right place so you'll always know exactly where they are when it's time to put the windshield back in place or replace the doors. It's a brilliant idea.
Okay, so the next step is Thinking okay, I have a place where I can put all the bolts if I want to remove the doors or remove the windshield, but then what do I have to carry tools and a screwdriver with me everywhere if wanna? do that, no don't check this, if you open the top of the center console you will see this little jeep bag, you open that bag and there are some tools in there, those are the only tools you need to remove the doors. and take off the windshield and take off the back of the hardtop on this car, that's it, that's all you need and then when you do that, you take the bolts and you put them in your little bolt storage area under the back seat. and it's worth it.
Note that the doors are actually designed to be removed like previous Jeeps, to the point where Jeep has even integrated a small handle into the door panel that they call the door lift assist feature. Now you or I could simply call it a door handle. but they say that's where you're supposed to grab the door when you hold it and carry it after removing it so you don't drop it or break it because it's a big piece and awkward to carry. Now, speaking of the doors, one piece of controversy about the Gladiator has been the fact that the rear door is the exact same door you have on the regular Wrangler, meaning it's angled at the bottom.
Now on the standard Wrangler, it's angled there to avoid hitting the wheels well, but on the Gladiator there are no wheels so why didn't they give you a full door for easy access? I asked the jeep people about this and the answer was generally that it's easier for production to just have the exact same door there and it will be easier in the aftermarket it will be easier if there is an accident you can go and To get any type of Wrangler door you do not have to get a special door which could be a little more difficult to find because it is exclusive to the truck version, that is the theory that now follows on the subject of doors, another interesting element since you can remove the doors.
The jeep didn't want to stick too many things on the doors and that includes the window switches they didn't want to put them in the traditional spot on the door panel so the window switches are in the middle, not mounted on the doors. Same thing in the back seat, they couldn't really put in the window switches. on the removable doors so they sit in the middle at the back of the center console, that's an interesting solution to the window switch problem, but I especially like Jeep's solution to the reading lights problem: no you can turn on the reading lights. the roof that faces the seats because the roof can be removed, so Jeep places the four front and rear reading lights on this bar that stays in place even when you have the roof removed, so the front reading lights You push them and they shine towards the front, the rear ones are angled towards the back, you push them and they shine towards the back, so this whole set of lights is in the middle for all four seats, which is a very good way to solve that problem.
Now, next, another interesting element. here in the center console, obviously, you have cupholders, but in the middle there is a small rectangular area that is for storing the cell phone. You're supposed to put your phone in there if you're driving, they have a little pocket for it and another one. An interesting storage spot in this car is on top of the dash. There's another storage panel up there, also big enough for many cell phones. You can place your phone there if you need it. Another great feature of the Gladiator is a configurable tire fill alert system you get this.
Many off-road vehicles like to inflate the air and the tires reduce the air pressure to make it easier to crawl over rocks. Anything in this vehicle that you can configure in the infotainment system. what pressure you want to take the tires to and then you go out you take the air out of the tires the car will actually honk when you've reached the desired air pressure which is a great idea when you air up again it just goes into the system infotainment, you set the pressure at which you want the air to rise again and honk again when it reaches that pressure.
Now next for another cool quirk of the gladiator, this particular model has LED headlights for an upgrade. visibility, but if you get the model with standard headlights, look in the center of the headlight, you can see it's the jeep grill, which is cool, very unnecessary, but it's a nice little quirk and when you notice it, you feel a little better . As for your jeep, I really think it's cool and in fact, those little Easter eggs you have to find are hidden all over the gladiator, for example, the floor mats are like a relief map that you could use if you're going to ride by highway. and the rear floor mat actually has a little prospector logo like a cross as this is where the gold is buried which is a cool little touch.
You also have little jeep logos all over the interior, for example on the top of the gear selector there is a jeep, you have a jeep logo on the wheels, if you look closely there is a jeep going up on the windshield which is Nice little touch and you also get Jeep logos on the center control stack on the buttons. The recirculation climate control button isn't just generic. car, it's a jeep and you also have a picture of a jeep on the little off-road cruise control button on the center control console, which is cool, but my personal favorite is the little jeep that runs across the screen in the cluster of gauges when you start the car you use this little jeep that's kind of an adventure on the screen it's cool I love all these little hidden jeep easter eggs that you have to look for and by the way yeah I just mentioned a off- The jeep with highway cruise control feature calls it select speed and you turn it on by pressing that little jeep button on the center control console.
You have to go under five miles per hour and four-wheel drive low and then you can turn it on. and the car will guide itself over various obstacles and off-road terrain, if you get stuck it will perfectly modulate the amount of power it sends to the wheels to try to get you unstuck, that's the level of technology we're at. -Highway cruise control, now the next step in the exterior of the gladiator. I want to cover some other interesting topics starting with wheels. Now these look like the normal wheels on the Wrangler, but Jeep told me that they actually had to make the wheels stronger on the gladiator for towing, so these wheels are actually different than the Wrangler wheels, they are stronger and more interesting, although the grill may look like the normal Jeep Wrangler grill, but it is not, they had to widen the openings for better air flow also for towing and So, the gladiator has a different grill and speaking of the grill , one element that you may notice on the grill is that there is a camera on the jeep that they call a trail camera and the theory here is that if you are in an SUV, you can't really see like the rocks that you might be crawling over since you are sitting there you can't always see what's directly in front of you so you turn on the trail camera and then you can see precisely what's in front of you in very high resolution and there are even little guidelines that show exactly where you're going and what are you about to run over now obviously if you're driving off road the trail camera is going to get dirty so there's a little spout on the trail camera that you can turn around.
On the infotainment system, it simply tells you to clean the front camera and then it will spray water on the front camera to clean it of any debris that may be on it so you can continue to see the obstacles you are about to face. run over a very good idea now that the front camera system is exclusive to this version of the gladiator, as I mentioned before this is the off-road rubicon model and it comes with a lot of off-road improvements over the normal gladiator, for example, all models gladiator They are all-wheel drive, but the Rubicon adds locking differentials.
You can activate them by flipping this small switch on the front and rear center control console or in the rear lane itself, both for particularly difficult off-road situations. Now the Rubicon model also adds a few other things to to the right of the differential locks you have something called off-road plus and you can activate it and you can go into sand mode or rock mode depending on whether you're in high four or low four. There is also a button below for off-road. Plus, where you can disengage the sway bars as well for tough off-road situations and the Rubicon's off-road improvements go beyond that.
There are also some elements on the exterior, for example the Rubicon has its own hood. It has its own distinctive Rubicon hood. and the fenders are higher on the Rubicon models to allow for more wheel and tire travel if you're off-roading, and speaking of tires, the Rubicon comes standard with 33-inch all-terrain tires. Jeep told me you can swap them out for 35-inch all-terrain tires without needing to lift them or any other upgrades, you can do it right away when you buy one of these. The Rubicon version also comes standard with steel bumpers instead of poor quality plastic bumpers, these are stronger if you hit things, but they are also winch capable, you can remove this little front panel and you can mount a winch directly on the factory bumper, which is an improvement from normal.
You usually have to go to the aftermarket if you want to convert it to a winch-capable steel bumper. The Rubicon also comes with Fox shocks, the suspension that of course will also help you when you're off-roading and here's a pretty cool element you've heard about: rock rails that run along the sides of the ATVs to protect the sides when you're offroading, this also has rock rails for the deck behind the rear wheels, there are rock rails mounted back there, that's because the gladiator deck hanging back there so far is kind of of weak point when you are offroading, check this out, the departure angle of the Wrangler in the rear is 37 degrees, but the gladiators are only 26 degrees because of that bed, so you may have problems clearing things and that you can scrape yourself and that's why there are rock rails behind the rear wheels. an unusual item but this is an unusual vehicle now it is worth noting that so far i have only shown you the original quirks and features of the gladiator, but there are endless customization options that you can look into through mopar which is an aftermarket andPerformance similar to that of the Chrysler market. catalog, for example, if you want to change your usual doors for these tubular doors, you can do so and check this if you do.
The way to open the tubular doors is this little red latch that says eject, you have to reach for it and pull it. and that's how you'll get in and out of your gladiator equipped with Mopar's tubular doors. Now, the next interesting Mopar accessory you can get is this unusual sliding bed door system. Look at this, mount this thing back here and then you'll have like little drawers where you can store things and jeep told me this system can hold the entire payload capacity on top of it so after you've put it in the bed you can put sixteen hundred pounds on top of it. and it won't work.
Don't break down in case you want to fill your bed with this and then fill it with more stuff. The next thing I want to do is cover the Gladiator's infotainment system. I've already covered Chrysler's infotainment system and a few other vehicles, the new Jeep Wrangler, the Grand Cherokee Trackhawk. And I'll link to those videos in the description below, but for now there are a few other items worth mentioning, starting with this rubber surround around the infotainment screen. I love it because this makes sure that no water gets on the screen if you take the roof off if you have the windshield down and it starts to rain a little, they have protected it knowing that people will use it in all types of weather and trail conditions, other element that I really like about the infotainment system.
The srt performance chrysler models have a performance pages element where you can see lap times, whatever it has an off road pages feature and if you click on it you'll have a couple of different things you can check, one is like the current. pitch and roll of the vehicle where you are sitting right now you can also check various gauges pressures temperatures to make sure nothing gets too crazy when you are out on the trails, then you can check the current status of the transmission is it in four high? Four-wheel drive low, do you have the differentials locked, that kind of thing?
You can also access the trail camera through here, the front camera that looks at what you're about to run over, which is a nice touch and take a look. with this little gladiator logo on the top left you can also switch between the front and rear cameras which I also love, I think it looks really cool and finally one more interesting quirk of the gladiator before you go driving it, now jeep told me that We are going to launch the gladiator with a special launch edition model. Usually those are kind of stupid and this one has it too. like special paint or special wheels and it has all the options and it costs like 60k normally I wouldn't even mention it but one detail about it piqued my interest.
The jeep is going to build 4190 gladiator launch editions to commemorate the fact that the area The code in Toledo where this is built is 419. So 419 4190 and anyway that's the last gladiator Easter egg. With that in mind, it's a tour of the gladiator and all the quirks and characteristics of him. Now is the time to publish it. road and see how well it handles driving the gladiator now, before we get into the driving experience, I want to discuss pricing briefly because I spent a lot of time looking for this. The gladiator starts around 35k with shipping which seems like a lot compared to the tacoma which starts around 27k with shipping but each gladiator is a quad cab with a big v6 and each gladiator is four wheel drive equip the tacoma with those things and you're at 33.3 which means the gladiator is now only about 1500 more expensive. the rubicon gladiator starts around 45,000 also a big number but the tacoma trd pro starts at 44,000. that's the contender and i will tell you you know the gladiator is a little more expensive but surprisingly small and this one is way cooler than the tacoma.
And I love the Tacoma, it's a cool, rugged truck, but it's cooler and I think it makes more sense financially than I expected. I thought it was going to end up being more expensive than it really is. The driving experience mainly just drives like a jl wrangler um it's not that surprising the same engine you know it's the same kind of basic cabin they say there's a new frame blah blah but generally speaking it's the same idea, um, there are a couple of differences, the biggest one being acceleration, just no. I don't feel as fast as the JL Wrangler, which is a bit of a shame because I don't consider the JL to be a fast vehicle on highways on ramps, whatever it is, it's fine, it gets up to speed but it doesn't feel fast and it's the same. story When you're going through the curves, this feels less agile than a Wrangler and again, the Wrangler is not a vehicle I would necessarily consider agile, so this is even more like meandering.
I also want to talk about the space in the back seat. for a minute um jeep said oh it's cool, it's got plenty of room in the back seat, I think it's okay, it's certainly not like a full size truck, although that's not what it claims to be, it's similar from Tacoma to Colorado, but there isn't a There's plenty of room in the back seat, you could use it as a family car, but it's not very big back there, so you should test it out before trying to remove that stuff. I think that otherwise this is a capable, very competent and very usable vehicle. it drives well exactly as you'd expect, you know, even though, like most of this car, the windshield folds down, the roof opens, the doors open, there's no rattles, it's actually surprisingly good armed, the driving position seems to be good, you have a dominant attitude. view of the road you're sitting up high it looks good I will say one thing I would change um the mirrors are the same as the Wrangler but this is a longer vehicle so it has bigger blind spots so sometimes the cars get they lose more in your blind spot with these mirrors I wish they were a little wider but beyond that you expect a Wrangler to get a Wrangler and in fact it's good for you to know that the new Wrangler is a great vehicle so that's not really a drawback.
Lots of cool tech, you get a lot of cool features now you might be wondering about a possible v8 version. I asked the jeep people that and it was very clear to me that it's not even really on the table, they said the emissions are too much It's hard to leave it for the aftermarket and there are v8 swaps on these but it doesn't seem like that It's going to be something that's yet to come. I think it's a shame, it would be nice to have a raptor version of this. I think it would sell and I think it would sell pretty well, but let's be happy that they did it and I think they did it very well, it was well executed, it drives well, it feels good, it has a lot of interesting quirks and features.
Just think that it is a fantastic execution of something that people have been waiting for for a long period of time and that is the 2020 Jeep Gladiator. This is not the most capable truck in the world as it only has a 5 foot bed with no pickup option. bed and it's not the most capable off-road SUV in the world because of its size and it's not the best convertible in the world, you know, it's not like a convertible sports car, but no other vehicle can do all three and that's why it's hard not to. love the gladiator and now it's time to give it an excellent score, starting with the weekend and style categories.
I think the Gladiator looks good, but some people seem to think a truck bed attached to a Wrangler is a little uncomfortable and it gets a 6 out of 10. Acceleration does. 0 to 60 in just over 7 seconds and gets a 1 out of 10. Handling is fine for what it is but not great overall and gets a 3 out of 10. The fun factor is huge, it's a top all-rounder down. There's nothing you can't do in this and it gets an 8 out of 10. The cool factor is also very high right now, it gets a 6 out of 10 for a total weekend score of 24 out of 50.
Following are the categories and everyday features the gladiator has a surprisingly high level of equipment the one i drove had adaptive cruise control off road cruise control and blind spot monitoring and of course it's a convertible and a truck too and it gets a six out of ten for comfort it's okay and gets a five out of ten. The quality is fine. Chrysler quality is always a little suspect and I've heard some stories about the JL Wrangler. It gets a 6 out of 10. Practicality is high with 4 seats and a decent sized truck. bed and gets an 8 out of 10.
Finally, the value is surprisingly high due to the lower prices than I expected. It gets an 8 out of 10 for a total daily score of 33 out of 50. Go up and the dig score is 57 out of 100 and here it is compared to its rivals, it easily beats the chevy colorado zr2 and the ford ranger, it's just cooler, more Capable, more fun and even beats the Toyota 4Runner TRD Pro for the same reason, surprisingly it also beats the Wrangler. It's more fun to drive, but the gladiator has a higher daily score with a little more equipment and a slightly better value score against his rivals.
The gladiator only loses to the raptor, which is funnier, faster and more attractive, but obviously much more expensive.
