Jun 03, 2021
so I stay in my own little lane, but there is a lot of drive towards being a workaholic, and hard work is a learned behavior. I see it on my team. There are people who come to me... I've seen it in the thousands of employees I've had, I mean, the closer they are to my son, the harder they work, and I'm like, "Uh-huh." and so I definitely feel like this is working. Hire more and you'll have negative P&L this year," but they say, "But Alan," I say, "Fuckin' Alan works for me," and it's a whole thing.

It's a whole thing, but it's been great, because We're pushing from opposite directions again. I'm seeing it, right? I'm letting the company do its thing, but I'm an equal force to the magic company, right? separating them almost strangely. I'm even thinking about things like a tax on Gary, right? That's Lindsay saying, "Hey, I really see it. I want to try it," and I was like, "Cool. Gary taxes her," and so on, while... What that would mean is that she can still run the business or her division properly, subtract the weird things I did in terms of dollars...

Tom: Right. Gary:. ..and then see if she's running a real business, because what was happening was all the leaders were under Gary's tax and didn't know how to run a business... Tom: Right Gary: ...because my halo could do it. to generate top line income protected all their disabilities. And as we scale and I want to give them other opportunities, I needed them to be able to outside of magic. One thing I have to tell Gary: I had never talked about that before. Tom: No, I love it... Gary: That was cool, right? I saw that you loved it and I thought, and then I was like, "Man, that was, that's cool," but that's a really interesting thing for entrepreneurs who They are scaling businesses, because entrepreneurship is actually completely at odds with running a proper business.

They are opposites. Tom: No, I've always said that the reason we were successful at Quest was because we knew how to zig when everyone else was. You have to be able to

make

counterintuitive decisions. Gary: I have to do it. Tom: And by the way, super fucking weird, so when you and I met for dinner, God, like five months ago at this point, I had proposed what I had proposed to you to I don't know how many people, 30, 40 people, and every single one of them looked at me like, "What the fuck?" And they literally had no idea what I was talking about, and I said, "Look, a big part of what's driving this is when Disney acquired Marvel Studios." That changed everything for me and I knew what had to be done.

I knew what that opened up in the market, and you said, and I quote, "My whole life is based on the fact that Disney bought Marvel," and I was like, "What the fuck?" It was like... The first time it went from being looked at like I was crazy to someone being like, "Yeah, yeah, I know, I know." I thought it was very fascinating. Gary: I remember. Tom: That's when you realize it's the ability to see that. It's the ability to see the oblique angle and, more importantly, it's the ability to believe in yourself enough to rally a team behind you and say, "This is what we're going to do," because we do it.
I'm saying everyone says, "Let's build a studio bigger than Disney." Now you can imagine how everyone looks at me, right? Think about you in the early days saying you were going to buy the Jets. Everyone... Gary: I get it. Tom: ...says you're a fucking idiot. Gary: I understand. Tom: So to say that, to me it's like that, it's being an entrepreneur, versus an entrepreneur who can generate positive profits and losses, and they understand all that, and I'm going to completely steal your notion of magically coming in. Gary: Yes. Tom: But yes, that is a key idea for anyone who really wants to be an entrepreneur.
It is not the license to be reckless, because I am prepared to go in and now execute against the Disney construction. Gary: What's super interesting is that those people who are CFOs, CEOs, and COOs think that's the magic. I always laugh at them. I say, "You're a commodity." Tom: Right. Gary: "There are millions of you. That's math. It's easy to understand." I always say that if you want to be an anomaly, you have to act like one. People want all these special things to happen, but then they act like everyone else, and that goes all the way to Saturdays when you're 20, or they just take risks or things of that nature.
I totally agree with you. I think about it like... You know that photo where it looks like two people kissing or it looks like a glass of champagne? I basically think that at this point in my business life, the world sees the glass of champagne and I see the two people kissing. I can only see it. I know what's coming. Now it's about where you want to take advantage of it. I knew seven or eight years ago that the telephone was... There was nothing else. Everyone says... I know ABC, CBS and NBC are finished. Their infrastructure, their infrastructure costs, do not correspond to the reality of consumer behavior.
We're going to watch things on OTT, whether it's Netflix, Hulu or Amazon. Facebook

will

release original programming in a month, right? Let's see it. Now, if it sucks, we won't do it. If it's a bad show, we won't do it. If it's a good show, you'll watch it and that's it. And so I know that's coming, and all the traditional retailers are in shit, I know that's coming. I know influencer marketing hasn't even started. There are a lot of things I can tell you that

will

happen in the next three or four years. It's about what are you going to do about it?
Which one are you going to choose? Where are the opportunities? Where are the angles? Tom: Right. I have one more question for you, but tell them where they can find you online. Gary: Garyvee is where I'm primarily at, on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, and then on Facebook, it's /

gary

, and that's probably the right place to go. Tom: Okay. What

impact

do you want to have in the world? Gary: I would say this is my current point of view, because I think it's actually important to have a different answer to this in your 50s and 60s, because you're going to adapt to reality.
I'll give you a good example. If something terrible happens in my life and it's related to an illness, or it's because a kid was texting while driving and hit my dad, that's going to become something I want to leave a legacy about, because that's how we act. like humans, right? They become your truths. But there is no doubt, this will never go away, I want to do the following. I'm fascinated by the same thing that attracts so many millions of people to people who sell nonsense, those same people are attracted to me, and what I want to do is suffocate all those other people and become the alpha of this whole world of people who are waiting and desperate to look at me, and what I want to do is inspire two 14-year-old girls in Kansas City right now to build a billion-dollar company with a bunch of employees hugging each other. in the hallways.
I think Steve Jobs came along and became an icon, but the sad part of that narrative was that he didn't treat his employees well. He became an icon and the narrative became, "He got the most out of people by being a jerk," and that became romanticized, and today a lot of people in Silicon Valley run companies that they are bad at because they think that That is the reason. the right thing because they put Steve Jobs on a pedestal. I want my pedestal moment. I want to be that big, and what I want to achieve is for kids who weren't even born today to think that they can build a $5 billion company and be a great guy or a great girl.
I want to build the biggest building in the city by just building the biggest building in the city, while I think most people try to tear down everyone else's building. So I think positivity and good are practical tips for building an empire, and I want to be the example of the person who built the biggest, baddest empire and did it by being a good guy along the way. And not everyone will be happy with everything I did, but if 97% of people talk well behind your back, that's a real legacy, and I want to do it in a pop culture way.
I'm going to do it anyway. People have done that before. Just so you know, there are a lot of people, Warren Buffett is a really good guy. There are many people who have done that. There is a difference. I want to do it and I want to be a rock star, right? And that's where you influence people. I want to do it, but I also want to be the most popular, and then that person says, "Oh, I want to be him, so I guess I'll be nice." I want to literally take people who have kind DNA and

make

them kinder because they think that's how I got big, so I basically want to trick the business world into becoming kinder.
Tom: I love that answer, man. Thank you very much... Gary: Thank you very much. Tom: ...to come. Gary: Thank you. Tom: That was amazing. Alright, guys. I watch everything he does like a damn hawk, because so many amazing things happen there.
And the fact that I'm trying to do things the right way, it's completely transparent in a world where, I think, the only things that will set you apart as an entrepreneur, other than your ability to build a business, are The way, it's your willingness to be transparent and authentic. If people can really connect with you, I think for the right type of entrepreneur, it opens a window that is incredible, that has never been seen before in the history of humanity. I'm someone who prides myself on being an otherworldly marketer and I built a very large business by understanding some marketing that other people didn't understand, but at the same time, you know me.
I'm never afraid to admit when I'm wrong, and there was a moment where I realized that he was doing something better than me and I just sat at his feet and I'm doing my best to learn. So guys, I assure you it won't be a waste of time or effort. It is an emotional enigma. I'm only now starting to understand what's going on with this man, but it's unbelievable. He doesn't judge himself. He is completely who he is. He recognizes his strengths. He plays with it.
