FULL Carbon Fiber 950HP Charger - Everything Inside & Out | Bumper 2 Bumper

Jun 06, 2021
(engine screaming) (tires screeching) - Muscle Cars of the '60s and '70s were defined by their primitive build quality, barge-like handling, and howling V8s. But what if you want an old school Muscle Car, without any of the drawbacks of an old school Muscle Car? Do you understand this. (thumping music) Today we are going to race the Speedkore Evolution. (upbeat rock music) It may look like a 1970 Dodge Charger, but it's not. Not even a little bit. The only thing this car shares with the original Charger is looks. It does not share any badge. The body is all

carbon

fiber

and is beautiful.

It doesn't even sit in the same pan. Underneath the car, Speedkore designed a custom steel ladder frame. They used four pieces of 6061 aluminum to build the custom floor. They could have used ready-made reproduction metal sheets, but that would have been too easy. The oil and fuel lines are mounted inside the frame rails because the Speedkore guys are bad. The Muscle Cars of yesteryear were good for straight lines and that was it. Not so with Evolution. At the front, the suspension geometry is modeled after the Corvette C6. A car known for its handling. (tires screaming) - Oh. - And at the rear, it has a four-arm rear end.

This is a big improvement over the original leaf springs which are better suited for trucks, not anything you plan on taking around corners. Penske racing coil-over shocks handle all the bumps and lumps. Does Penske sound familiar to you? - Penske - Penske - Penske - Pensky - Team Penske - Oh, yeah. They are just one of the most prolific and dominant racing teams in American history. This is a muscle car with suspension inspired by Indy and NASCAR racing. That's an American like me. (loud music. The Evolution has torsion bars and stabilizer bars, both front and rear, which drastically reduces body roll. (laughs) When you're going as fast as this, you want to slow down.

Trust me This It's accomplished with six-piston Brembo brakes up front and four-piston rear, and like my high school EG Civic, it also has cross-drilled and slotted rotors that reduce rotating mass, which increases acceleration. and cooling. They are called S101. Forged wheels like these HRE are much stronger than typical cast wheels and have an incredible 345 on the back end. Why would a car need tires twice as wide as my face? Loud music) Speedkore didn't go for the typical 426 Hemi or the typical LS No. They are companies with discerning tastes. They chose one of the most powerful production engines in history.

Evolution is driven by a Demon. Yes. The same engine as the Hellcat Redeye. Although this car is not technically a Dodge, it still has the soul of a Dodge hidden inside. To get more power, Speedkore made some major changes. They installed new fuel injectors and designed a custom intake. They 3D printed this (bleep) right here. This is literally what they do at NASA. My friend does it. Hi chad. And on top of that, they installed a smaller pulley on the super

charger

that makes it spin faster, drawing in more air and producing more boost. And more boost means more power.
Spotlights. (explosion) This is one of the cleanest engine bays I've ever seen. And I grew up in the Volkswagen culture of the early and mid-2000s. Where shaved bays were all the rage. It is truly a sight to behold. Roll up that sweet, sweet B-roll. Wow. Is that a cable? No. Mmmm. There's a little more of that champagne-colored sparkle work. Speedkore, you outdid yourself. Damn, this car has its own logo. Speedkore also worked with DiabloSport to tune Dodge's ECU. Which was a great ECU out of the box. Literally. (laughs) To see how I get it out of the box, watch this episode here where I unpack the Demon Crate.
Those adjustments result in a staggering 966 horsepower at the rear wheels. Which is 128 more than the simple, old, super limited edition, but far from the production V8, even the Demon. (tires screeching) And Speedkore didn't stop there. Speedkore decided to install a dry sump system. But there was a problem. No one makes a dry sump system for the Demon. So Speedkore built their own. Okay, quick explanation. A dry sump system stores oil in a tank separate from the engine, pumping it in and out. This eliminates the need for an oil pan. So instead of being at the bottom of the engine, this car's oil reservoir is located in the trunk and there are two lines running through the frame to keep

everything

clean.
Because being clean is a theme of this build. It's not even a construction, it's a car. It's a complete car. They made a car. The engine is also located far back in the engine bay. It's almost behind the front wheels and that really helps keep the car balanced. It's called weight distribution. Google it. Do you know who buys these high-priced muscle cars? Rich guys. And what do the rich love? Being comfortable. So let's get into something a little more comfortable than this damn stool. (laughs) (music playing) This is a really nice place to be. Now the Demon and its Redeye sibling use an eight-speed paddle-shift automatic transmission.
But Evolution, how will they do it? Speedkore took the same Tremec T56 manual from the Hellcat and bolted it to the rear of its upgraded engine. (tires screeching) I can't imagine the concentration it takes to get all your limbs working together to shift, steer, clutch and accelerate this thing with its 966 horsepower. You have to be like Danny Carey to do something like that. Although the Evolution looks like it comes from the future, from the driver's seat it feels like the past. It's like Star Wars. It's like this strange past of futures. Even the door handles are great.
You open them like you're firing a damn missile from a fighter plane. - Prime seat ejection. - All that being said, this is the best interior I've ever been to. 100%. That's not even the most interesting part of this car. The coolest part is outside in the frigid Los Angeles winter. (thumping music) So let's get into the details of what makes this car stand out from any other Charger ever built. The body. I just want a note from the host. I love the name Charger, because Charger means electricity and electricity appears in nature in the form of lightning, which is one of the fastest things that exist.
Lightning is so fast that it creates thunder. Which is the third coolest thing ever. Lightning, lava, thunder come out. There's lava there because he killed the Terminator. (Terminator crashes) (screaming) (laughs) Speedkore uses lasers, the fourth coolest thing ever created, to scan a 1970 Charger and ensure every measurement is absolutely perfect. Lasers don't lie. They are like hips. Once the measurements were taken, Speedkore made models and placed the

carbon

fiber

. The result is a perfect replica of an OEM fender made from the same carbon that Boeing uses on the 787. It's a big plane. Speedkore did not use old carbon.
No. That's not his style. They are listening? They used what is called prepreg carbon fiber. It sounds very fun. I'm trying really hard not to laugh at it. Normal carbon fiber is laid and then brushed with resin. That's what makes it rigid. Also a very funny word. But prepreg carbon literally freezes when Speedkore gets it with the resin already inside. The sheets must be thawed before placing them in the mold. The charcoal is then fired and pressurized in an autoclave where the resin is melted. Once the pieces come out of the key, they are stronger and much lighter than steel.
You've probably noticed that Speedkore didn't even paint this car because, no, it looks really sick. We have a great crew here at Donut and they are doing

everything

they can to light it and film it. But in person, it looks like a damn water moccasin. And if you don't know what a water moccasin is, it's the scariest thing in Florida. And Florida is

full

of scary things. This piece here is an absolute single unit that goes all the way to the front of the car and is attached to the roof with a bonding agent, which is a bonding agent.
This is the same technique used in million-dollar supercars, like the McLaren Senna we did an episode on. You can check it out right here. And like the original Charger, they keep the headlights on the hood. So when you turn on your turn signals, you know. But they made their own bezel, which is somewhat concave and, like everything else on this car, absolutely beautiful. They stuck the exhaust tips into the

bumper

. They literally thought of everything. The Evolution was built as a proof of concept. Speedkore's plan is to break away from Chargers and start making carbon fiber parts for Camaros and Mustangs or whatever people ask them to do.
If there is a market, they will do it. The Speedkore Evolution could be the most advanced muscle car ever built. People might be skeptical of iron-free Detroit iron. But this car is proof that today's technology can be used to save what we love from yesteryear, so I'd like to announce that I'm building a time machine so I can go back in time and get myself a dinosaur. (screaming) Thanks for watching Bumper to Bumper every Tuesday. This show will be on Donut until the day I die. Up to Speed is still every Thursday, until after the day I die.
