Ford F250 Super Duty - Best RV Towing Mods & Upgrades

Jun 06, 2021
Well, we are down here soldering the SMD fuel tank first and we are preparing right now to lower the hold fuel tank. This is a 60 gallon center fuel tank made by OMB. Welcome to Ky Edie. I love welding on cliffs. but it's tremendously difficult to have a conversation with all that noise, so Trish and I decided to come out here in the middle of nowhere to feel and land and review all these improvements, but we have a lot of things we want to share. we want to go over all the updates we want to do a quick review of the

f250

truck we want to talk about any discounts a promo code we can offer through stage 3 motorsports we're really excited about Trish what I'm going to stop right here on The day we decide to come back here is about a week after we sold the Jeep, so let's find a place to park and we have a lot to cover.

That's cool, really cool, is this your office, well, now it's nice and soft, yeah, it's comfortable anyway, there's a lot going on here. Mark is going to break it down. Well, this is our infamous installation video that I know a lot of people have been waiting for and it's not a traditional insult like how to install. We'll focus more on what

mods

we added and why we added them. What did we do differently now. If you've been following capabilities for a while you know we've had an F-150, a 250 and a 450. Then we go back to a 250 and we had air compressors, air lift compressors and now we have an ARB compressor.

More Interesting Facts About,

ford f250 super duty best rv towing mods upgrades...

There are a few things we did a little different with this truck which is really cool, can you guess which one is my favorite? I bet you can, yes Trish loves her 60 gallon center fuel tank and this time we did SNB with an SMB fuel tank and I'll tell you why in a moment but that's so Trish never has to stop before diving. In the video I wanted to have a conversation here about all the things that I think you should know before we get into the last time we did a video like this, some people said, Hey, it would have been really cool to see the price of the component or the part with the labor, yeah, right, so, um cliffs, which is where we installed this and I paid retail for the whole installation mm-hmm that I got.

I have the invoice here so we can itemize each of the associated labor costs. the work of all things and I'll tell you this, some of us do wish we had done it ourselves, but we did it all at once and I was recording it, so I can't say we could do it, but I'll do this and you'll do that and I'll do this, okay, so there's that and then the other thing is and this is great, so you've probably heard of Stage 3 Motorsports, they're a killer Ford and Toyota, but Ford's website is a site. great and we've been talking so they provided a lot of the parts that they provided in this video but we started talking about creating a promo code for up to 10% off for the KYT community and I'm telling you it didn't happen that way .

It's easy to get it if you're familiar with stage 3 and you'll see that they don't throw out codes very often and the reason is because this is all heavy and they offer free shipping so they said we'll do it until the end of June, yeah it's until 10%, so it's different amounts of different products, that's exactly until the end, like only four, until the end of June. Now, if you're watching this video and it's after June, keep your reverie cool. our email list and if we ever do anything with them again, that's where we'll send out promo codes, but we're really excited about that because these parts are awesome, it's a great site, so anyway now I want to talk about what that we have going on.
We're going to start from the front, so we installed a 60-gallon center SMB fuel tank. Tricia's favorite, let's talk about the air underneath everything here, which we'll get into when we get into the facility, is an ARB compressor. I have never had an air B. compressor, but this is as a consequence of our short period and excessive landing, okay, all Jeepers and overlanders use air B mm-hm and it is because they have large 35 37 40 inch tires and pump a ton of its about The speed is incredibly fast, so I had the buyer and I had the airlift.
I wanted to see what the air from A or B could do. We also have a tank on board with a hundred, 150 psi. I'm going to say this because I have a quick disconnect that comes out of the bumper and then it's

super

fun like if you ever want to have a tailgate conversation from your bumper or somewhere right because it's

super

fun and then I still need to install this and the reason it's not installed yet is because I have to make some custom brackets because it has to go in a very specific place aimed away from us okay so that's us and then I have Air Lift airbags on the back rear here, so let's look at the ARB compressor quick disconnect. airbags and then the bed as you can see this is amazing so we have a bed slide right here that we'll show you in a little jump back.
This is my third backflip and I'll tell you the pros and cons of a backflip when we come in and then we did a bed mat which we've always had like Line Ax or Rhino. This is the first bedroom we used and we only did it because of the bed slide in the backflip so far we love it yes but there are also pros and cons to this that I wanted to address mm-hmm ok ok so with all that being said, let's start with installing this fuel tank first and then we'll meet you here and walk through everything.
The first tip when you are changing the fuel tank is not to show up with a lot of fuel. That was me the last time we did this installation. Cliffs cousin thinking about David because I feel like I probably showed up here was like 3/4 of the tank and I could see the look on Jake's face who did the saw last time and looked at me like it really was so this time I planned for it to fit right where I have 50. miles to empty so maybe it's just a couple gallons in there or something took out the old tank put the OEM tank next to the SMB tank.
I think it's a beast the size difference but I really like what SMB did is they used the existing om shape so you can put the skid plate back on and put the water separator in the same spot and then they circled that spot to get some extra fuel up front, but I like how it was designed. It has some splashes on it, I don't know, like baffles somehow to keep the fuel from splashing out keeping it compartmentalized, which is good now that the tank is out, let's go over the fuel pump and the water separator. hose neck line back in and then I guess fill and that will mark that okay now we're in the cab of the truck here and I went to the SMB tank I created a video on how to update the miles to empty so I changed on the computer changing it from 30 gallons to 60 gallons other things I want to mention about SMB.
I really like that it has deflectors that I mentioned. I like all the technology that goes into the tank. I like that it's plastic, so it's a little lighter. I think our favorite thing was upgrading our tank to sixty gallons, which is pure luxury. I mean, it's not essential, but it's really nice to have when you're

towing

because we only get 13 miles per gallon and having that extra fuel range means we have to go get fuel less often. Trish just likes to drive and drive and drive, so she's into the big gas tank. It's something we got when we went to Alaska, but we found that it was one of our favorite

upgrades

, so I'm going to upgrade or upgrade this computer and then let's talk a little bit on the air, so this is where I keep my air.
A little puppy loves this thing and I think I eat 50 feet of cable like this all the time let's grab this one because this has this little bear on the end this is also where I keep my rusty Titleist 60 degree wedge because I think we mentioned in the last video the harvest host now has golf I hope I'm excited to stay on the right, so let's get started with this quick disconnect. The last time we added a quick disconnect on the bumper, we welded a little plate next to the trailer hitch and went to Alaska and it just went on.
Hammered to the point where it could hardly operate anymore, so this time I wanted to place it on top of this area so that mud and stuff wouldn't get in. There's a metal plate behind it, so we drilled a hole in that metal plate and there was enough thread to make this work, so we'll put this here for now and then I'll get the air, get it going, bags of Air will be activated now, one of the reasons I chose Air is because I wanted to have a compressor on board anyway just so I can fill the trailer tires and operate the airport I will eventually arrive at, but as long as I have a Nam working on the presser in a tank, I thought I could do it.
Well, we have the airbag, so let's make the ride a little smoother when you travel with air. We break the leaf springs when you're under load and then it also gives you the added benefit of just leveling things out now that the Airstream has such the light weight of the tongue anyway it wasn't critical, it wasn't essential, but as long as you made all the effort and I had this truck for a long time, I thought the vultures had the bags with the rest of the air. system, so it was kind of a thing to go in there to decide where this bug is.
Compressor B is a beast, it has an internal regulator of about 150 psi and they found a pretty good place to mount it underneath so it will go above the spare. tire and Mike right now I'm making a bracket and we're going to bolt to the sides of the frames that way the compressor ever has a problem we have to replace it then you can remove the side bolts and then everything comes out and this will go between those frames up there and then the tank will go in front of the spare tire once we mount the compressor and the tank then we can run the lines and smooth and then we can run electric up to the top switches and the batteries and then maybe in a moment I would like to maybe prewire the horn although I need a solenoid like an Illinois heiress we have it prewired here so it's easier to deal with later clarify that's true so if I didn't have the switches updated then these wires here they would have to change the mood and therefore inside it would be a much bigger situation, yes it would be, if that were so complicated.
Leaving the switch location, you should have seen how excited I was when I told them where I wanted, okay, so now I don't need them. Okay, let's talk about the air system, so this is where the air lift changes. I to add air to the bags. I think this is a great place for this switch because this compartment is pretty much only used for registration and miscellaneous stuff anyway and sometimes when it's on the center console it becomes hard to see the gauge. If I could lift the switch right here, you can't feel it, but the back end just went up, so I added twenty-three thirty pounds of air, which is 40 pounds of air, and then when I let the air out, this actually comes right out. behind here okay so this is the switch for the airbags the reason I made airbags is because they have a bumper inside the bag so I don't have to keep some air in there to avoid that the rear part is damaged. that's okay, okay, this is weird, it's an RV where you spend most of your time in the bed of the truck, so I'm excited to share with you some of the things we've done here and the pros and cons. cons of this back turn. but I guess what I'm most excited about is accessing everything, so one of the things I did with this bed slide was put in a 5 foot slide, which is a short bed slide and that gave me 16 inches in front of it. slide to put fresh water diesel gas from our company and the generator and propane.
I'll show you in just a second, but I was worried that with the bed slide and losing these 4 and 1/2 inches I wouldn't be able to fit this. container and if I wasn't going to be able to put these containers I was really wondering if you wanted to do it this is where we keep like our fresh water hoses for tools have been let me keep our back black stone here and then something new that we're really excited about this season is smoking as we go across the country, so let me crawl over here so I can show you that we get 49 and a half.
I water the mounting holes from side to side, I take 22. and a half in the center, well, we decided to re-record this segment because when we were in the woods making this video, I forgot to cover some of the shortcomings of this setup and the pros and the cons, and let's be realistic when it comes to reviewing. Of the items, some of the drawbacks are the most important part, soLet's start with the back foot. I don't know if you can tell, yeah, you can tell yourself that you can see that the fifth wheel camera is up here and the reason you can see that is. because this is a standard six point seven foot bed and as a result these panels are a little bit thinner and as a result of that it appears and you can see that your fifth Vil camera can still see the back when we had at f/ 4 15 it was a bed long, these panels were longer and there were two deficiencies in the turn back when we did it.
One is that the panels were larger and heavier and when you tow with a fifth wheel you keep it in this position. so and these panels were sticking into each other and actually leaving marks on the top of the panel, which is not a big deal, but the biggest shortcoming is that it covered the camera, so over time I got used to connecting with with the headrest by centering the headrest, so if I were to make a fifth wheel. Sorry, if I had a long bed again I would make a sliding bed cover and I wouldn't choose this, but now that we are back on a standard bed, I love the backflip.
I like that it is nice and clean. It is soft on top. A lot of people wrote and there are some really interesting things like. covers both industrial strength or you can buy cracks and tools and walk on them and that's great but I like the clean look of a mx4 with flip back okay so let's talk about the deficiency of a bed slide now that we have . I really enjoyed having the bed next to the bed, but the downside is of course that I made this short. I made the short bed with a 5 foot slide and that left me 16 inches right here, 16 inches to where the side of the bed goes, to be able to place them. containers in propane, but the downside is that, and by the way, you realize that using the Stanley Flat Max can teach an old dog new tricks, so anyway it's a great tape, so about this generator Firmin , it is a 20 100 watt generator and the reason I bought it is because it is only 9 inches wide and it fits perfectly here.
The generator I wanted was the Furman 3300 watt hybrid that runs on propane or gas, but that generator was 18 inches wide so I couldn't fit it here, so this is where you have to start making some decisions and I'll tell you the decisions I made. The 3300 watt generator is what I would prefer, but I will use it maybe once twice a month. I think it's essential for RVing, but I'll do it. Use it very rarely, on the other hand, the bed slide is something I will use every day, so I thought I'm going to prioritize the daily use bed slide over the generator, which will only be used once or twice. a month of use, but you know, if you do a lot of dry camping, then you can keep that in mind, but at the same time, if you do a lot of dry camping, you might want to go with a truck cap and I think a lot of people are wondering about why didn't we make a truck cap.
The fact is, we like the look of the truck Caleb and Trish used in a truck cap, but it would give us a lot more room and I think a truck cap in Along with the bed slide, it probably would have made the bed slide. the bed up to the wall here with the truck lid and then we put higher items here so that's definitely the way to go but I like being able to see. Out the back window, yeah, it's nice, and Trish and Caleb were kind of outside in the truck, half of it because because of the back window and because for videos I like the light here, I was on board just to deal with some of the deficiencies of the rear foot.
Yeah well we wanted to have our bikes there and covered but then we recovered if we can figure it out we made a flat back again we ordered a bike rack for Airstream so that's great and hopefully we installed it before we talk before Before we leave, we're heading to Home Depot now because we just have a few little things we want to fix in the cabin and then we're going on a seven-month trip hopefully to Nova Scotia. We're going to continue to be flexible, but that's our hope of getting there, yeah, a couple more things I wanted to mention in this video, the backflip and the bedrug, which I would have installed myself, it's a very simple installation that Carson and I installed the bed but the backflip on the f450 yeah, we're just a very simple socket wrench, but like I said at the beginning of the video, it's not like I could tell that everything had to be done at once, let's see, and then I also wanted to mention that as fun as all these

upgrades

are and they really are, sometimes they offer performance, safety and convenience, but mostly convenience and most of all fun, no matter where you are, what truck you have, don't let the upgrades of vans or what you have now prevents you from going out and starting don't let anything stop you nothing well what you have now whether it's a tent yes do whatever just go out and book some weekends yes because once If you get going you will start making these improvements, don't start from where you are and then slowly make improvements and you will cover so much ground much faster that you will be surprised, but at the same time if you are ready to make these upgrades and you have been watching something, take advantage of the stage 3 motorsports promo code, ok, honestly, they don't normally do this.
Yam was delighted to be able to offer that, so just three more videos before we can start traveling again. videos again, so I know a lot of this is usually when people say, I like your travel videos better, it's like, look, we're doing well too, but you know we have more instructional stuff and then we get into way, oh yeah You were stunned by these amazing t-shirts, yeah, keep your dreaming, so remember the dollar of every t-shirt, sweatshirt, tank top that is sold, goes to a scholarship, there are kids going to summer camp, so it's very exciting and people like sweatshirts, they don't care about this.
