Filming 8k with Samsung S20 Ultra | EPIC or JUST HYPE?

Jun 07, 2021
here we have the

samsung

records 8k videos. I

just

couldn't pass it up, what's most impressive to me is actually the size of the sensor, the wide angle on the s 20 and s 20 plus have a one over one, seven and six inch sensor which is great because it is larger than the one on my iPhone, one that is more than 2.5. five inches, but the s 20

ultra

has a sensor larger than 1.33 inches and is also paired with an F 1.8 lens. The larger sensor and faster lens should give us a shallower depth of field, which basically translates to blurrier backgrounds making the camera feel more professional, you could actually see the large aperture on the wide angle lens

just

right. here in the middle, we also have an

ultra

wide angle lens on top which is pretty standard and also a telephoto lens on the bottom, wait a second, do you hear that?

Oh, that's it. the camera moves there it disappears after you turn on the video because the stabilization kicks in listen it's gone now let's start taking some photos at a hundred and eight megapixels give it a try and then we'll go to 8k so let's get started so I'll take a couple of photos only in the standard 12 megapixel mode and then I will also take exactly the same photo in 108 megapixels and then we will see if we can really tell our difference, you know, look. On that face that is now the face of the motorcyclist, one thing I have noticed in all the tests I have done in the past is that the 108 megapixels also expose a little more than the standard version;

It's actually very hard to tell the difference between the two at first glance and even if you zoom in a little it's still pretty close, but once you get closer that's when you see the clarity advantage of the 108 megapixels at the higher resolution. low, there seems to be more of that artificial digital sharpness. in the post 108 megapixels, which actually has that detail, so you don't have to do that, but it also comes at a cost, so I'm on my ultra wide angle, take some photos and I could punch in on my wide angle, take some you shoot there and then my telephoto bambam.

I just took like eighteen hundred photos now so I can use all the lenses here and I was also able to take the photos pretty quickly, but then when you switch to the one hundred and eight megapixel mode, then you're kind of stuck on that wide angle lens and then the Photos take longer to process so you have to take a photo and then wait and then take a photo and then wait and take a photo and then wait, so you definitely lose the responsiveness and agility that you would get in camera mode standard. I think the big winner is the pro photography mode.

In this mode we are still locked into that wide angle camera, but now we have the option to save the RAW files, which I think is awesome. you use Photoshop because then you have full control over the image because I'm not a big fan of how these photos are always processed and most of the time it's pretty good but also the camera takes on a lot of things so sometimes you have to sharpen it with a knife a side that is generally not very nice to have that full manual control in raw format is amazing. Here's the same photo taken with the iPhone and I generally lean towards the iPhone look but with raw files you can do whatever you want with it so 12 megapixels raw ends up being the big winner for me if I'm trying to get the best image possible and if I shoot for convenience, I'll just be in the standard camera app to have access to all the lenses I need.
I still think 108 megapixels is cool, you can brag about it to your friends, oh yeah, how many megapixels do you have on your camera? Sam, you know how many megapixels your camera has. Yeah, loser, and one downside to that shallower depth of field is that I'm starting to lose focus once. once, something we'll never have to worry about as much with camera phones, there's a shallower depth of field due to that larger sensor, there's the live focus feature to artificially blur the background, it actually looks surprisingly good. some shots but of course it's also not perfect now as far as lenses are concerned.
I definitely love the ultra wide angle, I have to have it from time to time, of course, our standard wide angle, but I actually really like the zoom lens here, it's actually very useful. I have to do a 10x zoom, it's a lot clearer on the Samsung because there's less digital zoom to have to do, so there are definitely some cool features on this phone. Moving on to my favorite part, the 8k video, let's go from 4k to 8k. The first thing I noticed is that there is a crop, this is what Sam looks like in 4k and then if I go to 8k we are a little bit closer.
I noticed there is between 1.4 and 1.5 Ecks of crop and this is the widest you can go is 8k so you are stuck in this tighter lens mode because in 4k mode I can zoom out as far as 1x and you could even upscale it, so it's much more flexible in 4k mode now that we have an 8k. We're in a much tighter frame, so it becomes much more difficult to get a smooth, stable shot. This is currently one of my favorite phone devices. It's the DJI Osmo mobile 3 and we have a sponsor for today's video, so we're doing it.
I'm giving away three of these so this will give you a nice smooth image even with laughs so let me do the sponsorship read in 8k and you guys can tell me if the quality looks great or if it just looks. Pretty average, let me know, we're shooting in 8k and let's do it. Today's video is sponsored by audible. They are one of my favorite sponsors because I have been a big fan of theirs for years. Many of us have a lot of downtime right now, what better way to spend it than exposing your mind to new things, keeping yourself entertained, engaged, informed, the audiobook I've been obsessed with lately is Elon Musk by Ashley Vance and it's very attractive and interesting. the audiobook because I was really curious about who the man behind the Tesla is because since we got this I've been blown away by how thick the content is, the audiobooks have been really entertaining because they kind of tell you the good and the bad. and the ugly behind what happens is crazy his way of thinking doing business and getting the things he wants the author goes and understands every side of the story talks to his ex wife and all kinds of idiots it's really entertaining if you like SpaceX and Tesla or not, look, I'm wearing space t-shirts now, so go ahead and hit that link in the description or go to audible.com to reduce the potato cut or text potato jet at 500 500, for true, every time we reach the end.
That's all done in editing and since we're at tail resolution hopefully the image won't tear up too much and thanks to Audible sponsoring this video if you hit the link below you'll get a 30 day free trial which includes an audiobook of your choice and two audible originals, so if you are curious about Elon Musk's audiobook, you can get it for free, visit audible.com to get a sliced potato jet or a potato jet txt for five hundred and five hundred and start learning today, do it and for a chance to win one of the three Osmo mobiles we're raffling off, simply leave a comment below within the first 12 hours and you'll be entered, let's get back to the studio, but before we do, we'll be back let's put it in a kpop here, try to get some more 8k shots, look how

epic

Dale is, come on.
My first impression of the cave footage is that it's cool, it's impressive, but it reminds me of what it was like to shoot with the 108 megapixel mode. where technically it will be better in quality but I would prefer to shoot at a lower resolution, the more we inspect the image the more we realize that a K has a bit more detail so that's great but in 4k mode it's not necessary . zoom in 1.4 general image. just cleaner, nicer, you are more flexible with different lenses and when you look at it up close from a case it is still superior in terms of the amount of detail when you go in, but I like the overall image better in 4k and I remember the resolution is just a small part of the story.
I'm getting around 80 megabits per second at 8k. Now it's not much, but it's an H EVC or high efficiency video codec, so it can store a lot of information considering it's only 80 megabits per second, but still, it's not much, I mean, shooting a K with a pro camera will be easy at over 2000 megabits per second and in 4k I got around 28 megabits per second on HEV C and the iPhone actually gets 39 megabits per second so when it comes to bitrate the iPhone It is superior with 4k. What I like about the Samsung is the depth of field you get.
The background is noticeably blurrier on the Samsung, so it creates a little more separation and a little more depth to immerse the field. It can be a blessing and a curse, although you know that if you focus well it looks beautiful, but if you miss it it completely ruins the shot. With smaller sensors like the iPhone, many more will be in focus. time, so you have to worry less about losing focus, but at the same time you can't create that depth and separation. Samsung has an approach why, although it has a very original look, sometimes it looks surprisingly good, but sometimes it looks terrible.
I don't think it will be reliable for me to ever use it. It looks like you're poorly edited into this frame as a green screen shot, who knows, although maybe in five years I'll be the time everyone shoots at me. There is also Hyperlapse mode. Which is great, always a fun little feature, so the super slow motion will be a bit tricky because it's a very short burst, the timing has to be exact, so we'll try to time it perfectly, hopefully we'll get it right. Well, oh yeah, we did, it's perfect, it's also the pro video mode which basically gives you full manual control over the camera, which is nice because they let you lock your shutter speed, your exposure, all of that.
I have noticed other features like beauty mode, wow! How is it, my God, I look like I'm made of plastic. I want to rub my cheeks. Overall, a very impressive camera here. Would I ever use the 8k capabilities or the 108 megapixel photo mode here? No, but what am I more? What impresses me is the lenses here, the sensor that can take RAW photos in the native camera app, they are really draining the battery so anyway, hats off to Samsung, last week I made a video about the airy Trinity in case we go down and see what.
You guys have been saying in the comments that this guy's name is literally Ari, he was made for this yeah, it looks like a simple and affordable vlogging solution. I agree with imagining buying this and using it with an iPhone 4 as a camera. I bet they would. Actually it still looks pretty

epic

even with a crappy camera, if you have really good stabilization and good lighting it turned out pretty good. I also made a ridiculously long video breaking down each menu item on a Sony mirrorless camera. Sony cameras are known for having huge menus. It took me three days to film that.
The Sony shooter reads the title. Yes, this will take much longer than the Tesla menu. Yes, to go through the entire Sony camera menu, it took me 48 minutes on my vlogging channel. I did the same. It was like a deep dive into the Tesla Model 3, went through the entire user manual and that took me 49 minutes in 44 seconds so literally reviewing the Tesla only took me 1 minute longer than going through the damn Sony Menu and for those Of you who are like that, you have a secondary vlog channel, yeah, we do random things on there, for example, today we invented this, it's a plastic bottle cannon and you basically pull this lever.
