Apr 19, 2024
-I am very impressed by your dance moves and your singing. -Yeah. Thank you. It's my dance that... -It's so

good

. -That's what brought me here. Yes. I'm surprised by your British

accent

. -Oh. Thank you. Yeah, because I know you and I watch you, and I'm a big fan, but you have a great American

accent

. -Thank you. I really appreciate that. I have an amazing dialect teacher named Coley. I can't take any of the credit. She did this. -Are people surprised to find out that you're... -Sometimes they are, which is the biggest compliment ever? But I remember the first time I put on my American accent in a movie, I was 15 or 16 years old.

I thought: I'll do what real actors do. I'm going to keep the accent the whole time, you know? Yes, maybe I'm a method. I was 15 years old. I was just figuring it out, I don't know. -Yeah. -And my co-

star

... I was doing it for about three weeks, I followed him, and my co-

star

must have

believe

d that he was actually American. And finally I quit. He was tired, you know, I adopted my British accent and he

didn

't think I was English. I had to prove to him that I was English. He

didn

't

believe

me. -He told me: "Stop playing this character.

You're scaring me." "I know, and at first it was very nice, and then at the end I was making him cups of tea, listing the kings and queens, and I thought, how do I prove it to you?" -Bring corgis. You say, yeah, whatever I have to do to convince you I'm from England. Exactly. -Congratulations on "Fallout", by the way. There are very, very, very positive reviews right now. It's a bona fide success. It is a success. Congratulations. It is based on the video game Fallout and is unlike anything on television. It's fantastic, by the way. I was like, “What is CGI and what is real?” -That's not CGI.

Can you believe it? -No. Where are you? What is this? -This is in Namibia. On the Skeleton Coast. Which somehow, somehow, looks like California. Who would have thought Namibia would look like California? -Namibia. And what is that? But is even that real? Yeah, so this is like an abandoned shipwreck and is it me? It's very small. -Yeah. -That was me. I visited you on set that day. I was like, "Hi!" -I did not realize. -Yeah. No problem. -No, this was very funny. This is funny because, you know, these footprints, we had to take this shot in one the first time, right, Jonah is trying to take this shot high and wide.

And I'm going up, I'm coming out of the vault I've lived in all my life, underground for the first time, seeing the wall for the first time. It's very important. And I looked down right before I shot and I thought, "Is that a bone?" And there are all these bones on the ground. This is like the middle of nowhere. We took a four-hour helicopter ride to film in this location. It's very, very remote. And I look at Jonah and say, "Is that a bone?" And he says: "Action!" And I started walking towards the wreck and he said, "Watch out for the hyenas." I say: We don't have hyenas in England, okay?
This is my first experience with a hyena. Luckily I didn't run into any, but it was a small touch and I went there for a second. -I mean, oh my God, "Should we get vaccinated? What's coming? Are hyenas going to attack me?" -You know, but do we receive the vaccine? That's what's important. -Yes, exactly. And you got the vaccine. Yes. One of the most recognizable looks is the power armor on this. And, man, they hit it out of the park here by building this thing. How big is this character? It's a 7'4 - this real, practical, real armor that they built.
And our specialist, Adam Shippey, uses it. -Is there a person in that? -There's a person. And, you know, you're sitting there having lunch and he just walks by, you know, he's crazy and it never gets old. And, you know, he's a great guy and a great athlete, and there came a point where they said, "What can we do with Shippey? What can he do? Can he run? Can he?" Can he jump? Can he dance? He can do everything. -He can do everything. -He can do everything. -You brought us a video. -I did. -Here's Adam Shippey in power armor... flossing.
Have a look. Yes. He can do everything. -Oh God. He's going to kill me for sending that. -You were telling me backstage that you broke a lot of things on the set. -Yes, yes, thank you for mentioning that. -Sorry but. No. Well, you were telling me and I think it's a funny story. Because I thought it was going to be just one thing. But you kept breaking several things. -I did. Well, I wanted to wear the power armor because it's the coolest thing in the world. They only let me use the heads. -Well, it's bigger than your entire body.
That's probably why. Oh Lord. -True true. But they didn't let me because I have a habit of breaking things. They nicknamed me She the Destroyer because she broke a lot of things. -But tell me what? -Well, okay, so there are these guys from the well, right? It's like the most important thing in gaming and it's iconic. It's like a great honor to wear one. And I broke four of them. And it was... -This thing on your wrist. -Yes, and they are made of iPhones. It's an iPhone that sits on its side and is held together by this type of magnetic contraption.
And I talk with my hands in case you didn't notice. And then he'd be very passionate and just fly across the room and you'd hear, "Cut!" And they had to say, "Hey, iPhones are expensive. So, you know, can you do something like that? We're in Namibia. Yeah. It's hard to get an iPhone." -So I think in the end it was

good

that they didn't let me use the power armor. -You also told me backstage, I said, "Do you remember auditioning for this?" And you say, "Yes, I do. It was good." And I say, "Have you had any bad auditions?" I think if I just... -Yes.
No, my auditions are always terrible. I feel like it's a bad rehearsal, a good wedding. Every time I come out of an audition, I think I've made it. I never get the role. It's only when I screw up auditions and they're terrible that I somehow get the part. -Give me an example of a bad one. -I did "Sweetbitter", my first audition, this is such a bad story, it's so embarrassing. I did my audition for "Sweetbitter" and, you know, it's a screen test. They fly five girls and you're in New York. He was 21 years old. He was an idiot.
I did not know anything. And you're all sitting in a waiting room, you know, evaluating each other. It's really scary. -Oh, I know. -And you walk in and there are like 25 star executives in the room. And I'm just sitting in the middle and auditioning the worst. I forgot my lines, I was wearing the wrong blouse. It was just... it was a nightmare. And I tried to get out and it was... Nobody told me it was a push door, so I opened it. But I removed the handle and we were locked inside this room. -No. -For about 45 minutes. -After the bad hearing? -Yeah. -Now you're locked in the room with all these executives and they say, "No." -I was doing stand up.
He was telling jokes. It was terrible. How can i fix this? -But you got the role -Somehow. I do not know how. Somehow I got the role. -Because you are charming and truly incredible. You're really good, that's why. -Thanks thanks. -That's why you got the role. You are super talented. "Fall." What can we tell everyone? What character did you play? And who do you play? -Oh, you know, I'll tell you. When I had my first meeting, they described it as Ned Flanders in the apocalypse. And I said, "I've never seen that show." It's funny, it's political.
It's based on a video game, but I don't think you need to know the games or play them to like the show. Kind of a nuclear apocalypse, but funny, I don't know. -Yes, that's a good way of saying it's a nuclear apocalypse, but a fun one. -TV show basically, yes. Yes, it's fantastic. Everyone should check it out. I want to show a clip. Here's Ella Purnell in "Fallout." Have a look. -But the mission of the vaults should be important to everyone. -And why is that? -Well, uh... Well, you see, the idea is, um, that we're going to... save America. -Ha!
And when exactly were you planning to save America? The vaults were nothing more than a hole in the ground for the rich to hide in while the rest of the world burned. -Oh! Ella Purnell, everyone. The first season of "Fallout" is now available on Prime Video. Benson Boone performs for us after the break. Stay with everyone.
