More Interesting Facts About,

dresser makeover w dixie belle chalk paint stain...

Some of you who have been here for a while may recognize this piece. It is the piece I used to demonstrate how to remove the veneer from a piece. I'll link that video above if you want to see it, but I'm finally remaking this guy. It's been a while since it's been in the garage. We're just reinforcing it here a little bit to make it a little sturdier. I was a little loose, so my husband helped me do it. I got this piece for free from a collector who goes into houses and removes things for estate sales and really no place would accept it.

The Salvation Army wouldn't accept this, but I was. Let me try to give it new life before I throw it away, so it was really dusty and dirty, so today I'm using white lightning, which is one of Dixie Bell's cleaning products. I love it, it works very well to clean your piece. I'm just mixing this with some warm water. I'm going to apply it all over my piece to remove the dirt and grime and get it nice and clean before I apply the paint and after I scrub it, I use a sponge to scrub it. because that helps get more of the bits off, you know, you'll just rinse it with a little bit of clean water and let it dry or you'll wipe it with a towel before you paint and you might ask Kristina why there's a big towel on top of it. of your piece, well, it's actually a damp towel that I placed on top to remove an extra layer of veneer.

I actually had another layer of veneer that started to peel once I removed the first one, so I put this wet towel here, you can see. how the water is absorbing in there, it's not ready to be taken off yet, so I'm going to put it back on and actually take off the hardware and start painting a little while I'm trying to get it. sheet to soften a little more. I'm putting the hardware away today because I wasn't sure if I was going to reuse it or not, so I put it in a little baggie and set it aside.
I never throw hardware away because you never know when you might use it on a different piece and I just like to keep it all together in case I wear it again, but today I'm starting with Dixie Belle, a dry sage, and her mini synthetic brush. This is a very beautiful neutral khaki color. In fact, I used it just to do a wash and create a

stain

for my daughter's canopy bed that we built. This is Dixie Belles mineral

chalk

paint, so it is very similar to the furniture paints you see me paint on. here you don't have to prime or sand before applying this paint, it just applies.
I really enjoy working with the Dixie Belles synthetic brushes because they give you a little bit softer look, oh but sometimes it still falls out. spilling with all the brushes you just have to select it and smooth it out is not a big deal, but I really like working with these brushes because they give a little bit of a softer look to your furniture, it's not really textured. I'm going to distress this a little when I'm done just because of the shape of the piece, but I'm going with the grain and keeping my brush strokes in one direction just because I want a little bit of a softer finish here. and this brush is really helping me achieve that look.
I'll link all the products I'm using in today's project below in that description box to make it easy for you to find everything I'm using today. I really love it. at Dixie Belle because they truly are a one-stop shop. I'm going to use paint today, koats, you saw me use the cleaner. I'm going to use dye and different applicators and brushes, and everything I'm using, you can follow. Dixie Belles Website Many times when I do it as a two tone project like this, there aren't many paint companies that make stains so it's really cool to be able to know that like all of these products, they were created for formulate together.
You can buy it and have a set of products shipped and you don't have to go from store to store to get them, so it's a really positive thing to work with Dixie Bell products. Okay, let's get back to my list of things you can do. I see that more water has been absorbed into the top layer coming up, so I grabbed my hammer and a small paint scraper and I'm going to remove this if you want more information on how to do this like I said. I have that video on removing the first layer of veneer that was here so I'll put it in the description box in case you want to watch that video please if you're doing this wear gloves or eye protection because I don't want to let nothing fly. in your eyes and I don't want you to prick your fingers with splinters so this is pretty typical of an old piece once you take it off, they're actually boards that someone put together and then put nicer wood on top.
I love this board look. so I'm just sanding it with my orbital sander to remove any remaining debris from the top and I'm going to try to stick with this top because it looks very rustic and worn and I think it will go perfect with the painted base that I'm making, so I taped the base with my 3m painter's plastic in one just to protect it since I already started painting it and I have some paint remover in this little metal container and I'm just painting it on the edge here where I still have varnish because I need to remove it before I can move forward with the stain, so I'm just going to put that paint remover in there, let it sit for about 30 minutes and then come back. and scrape it off when you're working with this stuff definitely wear gloves definitely wear a mask or work outside in a very ventilated area because these chemicals are very strong to remove this varnish, but it's the easiest way to remove it after it comes in with a scraper.
I like to take some steel wool like this, a really thick one that's oil-free, and I put a little bit of that paint remover in there and it helps you get to those edges and corners on one side like this. to remove that residual varnish and then I take a shop cloth and dip it in a little bit of mineral spirits and just wipe it off to make sure the surface is clean. I let it dry and then go back and sand off any debris. spots I've missed that have a little stubborn stain just to prep it to look like the rest of the blouse.
I'm finally ready to dye this blouse, so I'm going to grab some items to protect myself, since this is an oil-based product, I'm going to wear my vapor respirator. I'm going to wear my eye protection. I'll be applying it with the Dixiebell applicator today and I have my painless gel tint and my white stripper. You'll also need a pair of gloves to protect your hands and here I'm just taking a technical cloth and wiping down the top to make sure I have a dust free surface to start with and very simply I'm just opening up the stain.
I can see it's very thick, this is a new formula, it's very pigmented. I'm just grabbing that applicator sponge. I'm going to work in a two to three foot section and apply it very well. I am applying it following the direction of the grain. which means you can see those lines moving horizontally at the top, so I just follow them and do a horizontal movement and I get this whole blob here, as I mentioned earlier in the video, this is a new formula and they came up. with lots of new colors and I really love the way it works it's more pigmented and very easy to use so once you put it on you'll wipe off the excess so I have a bunch of shop towels in the corners , as you can see, I like to use them to remove the dye, it's what I like to use the most and then you can throw them away once they dry, but you can see that it's removing the excess of that dye and leaving a beautiful bleached stripping effect and I'm going I'm going to do the same thing all over the table working on those two or three foot sections and I have a bunch of those shop cloths folded and ready to go, you don't want to let this sit there for too long, you really want to wipe it down and then wipe it off again.
Because of the way it's formulated and how pigmented it is, you'll probably only need one coat to achieve the color you want at this point in the process. In the project I decided I wanted to add a little more color to this piece, so I'm going to use a sea glass to make a two tone finish, but I noticed something I wanted to show you. I had some bleeding. on my first coat and one way to alleviate this is to take a can of

dixie

bell boss this blocks odors and stains and stops bleeding so I shook this really well took a chip brush and I'm going to paint this all over the drawer. just to do the application, even when I go to apply my second coat of paint, it will stop the bleeding.
Sometimes this happens when there is some type of oil under the surface that can't be seen even though I clean the piece to make it look good. It's really nice to always have a can of Boss on hand in case you see they were like that, so now I'm just painting in that sea glass color. I felt like the top, once I made it, was too dry-like. sage color and although dried sage is beautiful, I thought this piece needed something and this sea glass color is super beautiful, so I'm putting this coat on exactly the same way I put the first one on and then when we go to wear it out, it'll give it this two tone effect when you sand it and weather it down a little bit, you'll see some of that dried sage color underneath and it'll be really pretty.
I usually take out my drawers when I'm painting, but I've seen a lot of people who don't, so this time I tried to keep them in and see how it goes. I'm ready to apply a top coat to my stained blouse, so I'm going to use Dixie Belles in Gator Hyde and their blue applicator sponge that is specific for this top coat. This is my first time using this top coat. I got a lot of requests to try it because it's their most durable top coat, it's waterproof and you can wear it. inside or outside, so many people are interested in this.
The most important thing to know is that this is a water-based topcoat and I am going to apply it over an oil-based stain. You need to wait until this stain is completely dry to put on the top coat, so I let it sit for 72 hours. I know it seems like a long time, but when you switch between oil-based products and water-based products, it's really going to have to be dry or the top coat won't. I'm going to work, so this is just my first layer. I'm going to go into more detail on how to put this on when I show you the second coat because I watched a lot of videos between my first coat and my second coat to give you guys some better tips.
My biggest takeaway from this first layer is that they just want to put a little bit of product in there. Wipe off the excess sponge with that side of the paper plate and it will just go back and forth in the same direction and I try not to stop. I think that's the first thing I did wrong: I was stopping in the middle of the strokes and what you really want is to perform that stroke from side to side without stopping, so hold down. tight because I'm going to give you more tips on the second coat that you can incorporate into your first coat and since this is a water-based product, you can just wash the sponge with a little bit of soap and water between coats, okay?
I'm going to wear this piece down a bit. I'm going to take a 320 sanding pad, so it's a very fine sanding pad because I don't want to take this wear too far. I just want it to be very light because I'm going to try it. To sell this piece, I have my mask on and I've put my particulate filters on it versus my vapor or filters just to protect my lungs and I'll bring you closer so you can see the color effect, you can actually see it dry. The sage comes out in the places I'm distressing and when I'm distressed, I just go along the edges like this.
I go around the edge of the drawers and I always do it on the feet and rough them down a little when you really don't want to. to attack any of the flat spots because that won't look as natural so I try to stick to the edges on the details when I'm distressing, once I'm done distressing I just take a technical cloth or a clean soft brush andI just wiped off all that dust before getting ready to seal it to seal my paint. I'm going to use Dixie.Belles, a big mama betta and using my other applicator that I have, this one is actually the one that's orange scented and it smells amazing so you have to use a lint free cloth to apply it or you can use one of these applicators and, as I had a second one in my pack.
I am using this to apply it. It's very easy to see where it's going. A little help. They released this product last summer, so it's a little newer and how it's different from. your best chopping wax, which you guys have seen me use before and heard me talk about wax here, it's more of a natural wax, it's oil based, it's the fastest curing top coat and it actually cures in seven days from I bought this. Waxed it, I let it sit there for a little while and then I would take a lint-free cloth, one of those shop cloths, and just wipe it down a little bit to remove the excess and at this point you can polish it a little bit. a little if you want a little more shine, you can use it on painted surfaces like this, but it actually works great as a conditioner to bring the shine back to old wood.
You can also use it on drawers to help them slide a little. better, but my favorite part is that they have scented versions. I'm using the orange one, it smells amazing. There is also one that is more floral based called Suzanne's Garden, but they also have an unscented one if you don't like the fragrance. it eventually fades, but it's super nice when you put it on, okay, now we're going to add our second layer of Gator fur to this top. It's been two hours for it to dry and I'm just taking the same sanding block as Sanding Block 320 that I used to distress my piece.
I'm sanding it lightly just to polish out any of those scratches that it had and I also like to do this to give the second coat something to adhere to and before I apply that second coat. I'm just taking an anti-static cloth and getting rid of all that dust, okay, the second coat is when you'll want to take notes, so I learned that you should dampen the sponge a little before applying. the skin of the gaiter will just help with the application to make it smooth so I just have a little bit of product here which is a little too much so you want to take the edge of the paper plate and scrape it back a little bit.
It's more how you want it to look and you want to go from one place to another without stopping and without lifting the sponge. It's okay to go back and forth like that, but you don't want to stop in the middle because that's going to give you streaks and I realized that you don't really have to go back and get a lot of product, you just want to do very thin layers, you can do up to three coats so make sure your coats are thin and really even and it really evens out as it dries so don't be too scared to see streak marks but you don't want to go back it dries so fast now that I made that front section like I didn't want to. go back and play that.
I just want to move on to the next section. You don't really want to go back and rework it because that's when you're going to have those streaky fogs that you don't want to see. like I told you between layers I watched a lot of different videos on how to work with this Gator skin since I haven't worked with it before, just like you guys, I need knowledge, I need to learn, I'm not perfect so I'll link those videos below I found on the Dixie Belles website, if you're interested in seeing a couple more furniture artists working with this top coat, I saved the edges for last so I could soak up any goop that may have happened while I was doing it.
On the top, once I was all done with the top layers, I noticed that when I pushed my drawers in you could see a little bit of that stain on the sides and like I said, this usually doesn't happen because I pull out my drawers. but I was trying a new technique and saw that I was missing these dots on the side, so I'm just taking some paint and dry brushing it so it doesn't show when the drawers are closed. I decided to get lighting hardware. This piece is a little higher. These little knobs are from Hobby Lobby.
They cost 399 each if you wait every two weeks. Her hard work goes on sale for 50% off, but I was in a hurry to finish this video for you, so I paid up. full price for him, but 399 the purple one is not bad at all. I love this design. I think it just brightens the piece and makes it look really pretty, so here's this

dresser

before it got this beautiful

makeover

with all the

dixie

bell products. I love the sea. The glass color is so bright and beautiful. I'm obsessed with how this cover turned out. That stain just gave it the perfect whitewashed, aged look and really highlighted those areas where he had scraped and scraped it to give it that rustic farmhouse feel.
It's a close up of how using two different colors really creates a beautiful effect when you de-stress, so I installed this in my small kitchen-diner area just to show you how nice it would be as a coffee bar I think. It would also look great in an entryway or dining room. Thank you all for watching this video until the end and joining me in this project today. I hope you learned something new. I hope you get a chance to try some of these. products and techniques thanks again to dixiebell for sponsoring today's video. I'll be back soon with another project and I'll see you next time.
