They went crazy with my last paint comparison where I compared Annie Sloan and Waverly

chalk

, so I grabbed a lot more colors in the Waverly

chalk

and got a new one. a chalked oxide-oleum that you guys have asked me a lot of questions about and I keep saying I haven't tried it, so today I'm finally going to try it.

I'm going to stack those paints up against a bunch of paint brands that you guys see me use on my channel and just see how the colors vary and how they work. I'm going to use top coats of clear coat and some waxes. I'm going to break this down into colors and the timestamp, so if there's a specific paint or color you want to see, you can jump right to that. I'm sure he'll be as chatty as the last one, so let's zoom in and start comparing these paintings. I'm going to use a piece of furniture to demonstrate these paintings today.

I like to do that instead of just using boards to give you an idea of what they will look like on a piece of furniture. I'm going to use shellac to seal this piece because I've already removed it previously. Leaving aside the varnish and chalk paint for another video I made on if you can remove chalk paint, so I'm just putting shellac on to seal the piece and it will act like a normal piece of furniture that you would have on. It's also great to have rubber lacquer in your house because it will stop bleeding and seal in odors from any furniture you have, so here are all the brands I will be using today.

I have three colors of Waverly chalk and I am going to try Rest Oleum chalk for the first time. I'll compare it to a pretty, lonely Jolie and Dixiebell, all paintings you've seen on my channel before. I also have a ton of different top coats to try. today from Rust-oleum and Waverly and then we'll use Jolie and Annie Sloan wax and Dixie Belle clear coat. First is the battle of the grays. I'll use Waverly chalk in elephant versus Dixie Bellel in hurricane gray. and to make things fair, I'm going to use the same brush for each painting, so today I'm going to use my Zibra palm Pro, it's going to give a smooth finish to each painting and I'm going to thin each paint.

You guys came for me last time in the last video where I did this, but I basically dilute all my paint, unless you're going for a really textured look, this doesn't affect its performance, it'll actually just help make it smoother. The goal of this video is not to persuade you to purchase a specific paint or to choose one winning paint over the other. I just want to show you a side by side comparison so you can make the best decision on what paint you want to buy and whether it fits. Your budget is the best you're comfortable with, so I'm not going to drag anyone down or sing anyone's praises.
I'm just going to paint giving my opinion, but you can take it or leave it, so this is Waverly chalk and elephant again. I've used this paint before in videos and have become a big fan. I like the way it is applied. It works well. It's an acrylic based paint, but it gives you that matte finish like a chalk paint on the other side. We're comparing this to the Dixie Belle Hurricane Gray, which I love. I have used it before on my son's bunk beds. It's a really beautiful deep gray color and has great coverage. Just to remind you, I'm going to achieve a smooth look. all this so I'm using the Zibra synthetic brush and I follow my brush strokes in the same direction and by the way since I'm painting with the zebra brush I wanted to tell you that my good friend kaca and I were on the zebra podcast before and after this week talking about YouTube and I hope you go watch it.
I'll link it in the description box, so I'll go through all the different colors I've painted those sections and then I'll come back when they're dry to compare them a little more after that first coat, so next I'll do Waverly Ink versus Jolie Noir, so something I want to point out is how thick this Waverly is and this is a big reason why I thin it out. I know in the last video people didn't like it, but like I said, I dilute all my paints. I'm going to say a couple of times while I'm doing this, there's nothing wrong with the thickness.
It's very different from the paintings I'm used to working with. One thing I am very impressed with this ink color is how pigmented and truly black it looks as most of the blacks you work with turn blue. and then dry black, but this almost looks like ink. I can see why they called it ink. I was also very impressed with the coating, it really seemed to melt into the piece and I couldn't see any wood, I think one layer. This color would be enough, but in the same way it is so pigmented that it stained my hand, so I would be very careful with this color because if you put it on anything other than your furniture, it will definitely stay wherever you are working .
Next up is Jolie New or again I'm diluting it and I've used this color on several pieces. I used two on my nightstand I recently made and on my son's desk and this one turns very blue but dries down. to a beautiful black, I know it works well and I know it will hold up because I have it in my house and it's also a good option if you want to mix colors because I've used it before with a blue to create a really deep navy color. I think if you mixed the ink it would get really cloudy and dark because of how black and pigmented it is, but it definitely doesn't have the same coverage as Waverly.
I know I'll need at least two coats on this. color to achieve the same coverage as Waverly. The following are the Battle of the Whites. I have Rust-oleum chalk painted in linen white and Jolie and Palace in white. This is the first time I have worked with this paint. It has a very strong smell. like Waverly Waverly has a very strong paint smell but this one is much softer than Waverly it goes on very thick so I saw a lot of brush strokes but the coverage is amazing because of how thick it is it adhered really well as did a chalk paint, but I honestly think it behaves a little more like a latex than a chalk paint and sometimes with these paints the brush strokes can even out as they dry, so we'll see what the second and third ones look like coat here with white, you will probably have to apply three coats, sometimes four, so I recommend that if you are applying white and you are looking for a smooth finish and you don't want to see any of that wood underneath, using a primer or a cover stain is always a good option. idea just because you're going to save paint in the long run, okay next is a Jolie Palace white, this one is pretty close to a pure white, but it just has a little bit of tint so it's not as pure white.
I use this one. in my shiplap video over my fireplace, if you've seen that again, the coverage is pretty similar to Rust-Oleum, the rest might have a little better coverage on that first coat, but Jolie is definitely softer and has more of that matte look compared to Rust-oleum okay lastly I will compare a Waverly pool to Annie Sloan Chalk paint in duck egg blue so this is the Battle of the Blues they are a different shade but I wanted be able to do it. I used Annie Sloan paint again because I know a lot of people ask me questions about it, so this is the pool again, it's very thick just like the ink and just like the elephant.
I really liked that the color was wet, but as it dried it set. much brighter and I wasn't that big of a fan of it and it got duller the more it dried which I will show you when I review all the different colors after they are dry but I had no problems with it and it worked flawlessly as did the other colors so in the Annie Sloan duck egg blue again you can see it's a lot softer than the Waverley just by looking at it worked super well. I couldn't believe this was the best. single coat plus Waverly ink, which really surprised me because I've used this color a lot and it's one of my favorite colors so I'm trying not to be biased towards this specific paint but I'm just a fan of duck egg blue .
I love it. I have made many pieces with it and have it as a decorative piece in my house, but the coverage was amazing with just one coat of this color, so here's what all the first coats looked dry, the elephant looks a little streaky on comparison: Dixie Belle but has better coverage with the blacks, Waverly definitely has better coverage than Jolie after that first coat you can see Jolie really dried down. very black and it doesn't look blue anymore, the whites look very similar and the coverage, like I said, we'll probably have to apply two or three coats and then let this dry, you can see the big difference in the pool.
It doesn't cover as well as a nice solo, but I'm going to go back and just apply two coats to everything, with the exception that I'm going to apply three coats to the white so you can get a better idea. of what they're going to look like, so I'm going to show you all of these once they dry with that second coat and then we'll start adding different top coats and comparing them. Okay, the second coat on the grays looks good. I don't see as many stripes on that elephant, so I'm happy that the two black ones look great again.
Waverly seems a little deeper to me than Jolie. This is the white after three coats and there is not a big difference between the two. two looked pretty similar and then we have the blue ones again, even after two coats. I'm not very happy with the pool. I think you would need to add a third coat, but I'm trying to do apples to apples here, so I'm just going to see how this looks when I top coat it. It's fine for the top layers. I'm going to try a lot of different things in these paintings, so try to stay up to date.
I will use this

dixie

bell brush every time I use it in its synthetic version. brush, this is the Dixie Belle mini angle and I'm also going to use a foam brush, so the first one I'm going to use is the Waverly matte varnish. I have used this before on white. I used this in my last comparison video. and I really liked it, but I don't like it on top of this gray for some reason, it was lifting the paint, it looked very streaky and it only got worse as it dried so fast I grabbed the foam brush. to compare the two to see if that was a little bit better and I think it's easier to get it softer with this foam brush, but again it's like lifting the paint and re-wetting it, but not a big fan. it's very thick, like I said before I didn't have many problems like this with the white paint so maybe it's just this particular paint I'm not a fan of so since I didn't like the way it was going I wanted to see how the Dixiebell top coat would behave on this paint, so I cleaned the brush and took some of the clear coat.
I recently found that using this top coat with a wet brush helps it work even better, so I'm just putting this on as I did. I usually make brush strokes that grow in the same direction I painted to get that soft look and this was going much better. I know it looks white, but I know how this dries. It dries very even and very light so I was just hoping this would look a lot better than the way the Waverly section was going and I noticed that it didn't lift the paint so I thought it was a problem with the Waverly top coat and not from the brushes I was using or the paint. problem and then I went ahead and just applied this to my

dixie

bell side and like I said I like to keep it with light strokes don't over work it it's very white as you go especially on a dark color like this but it dries completely flat and it evens out a little bit as it dries too, so here's the battle of grace once they dried, as you can see, Waverly went very streaky with this color, it just doesn't look very good. like the bell that has that stripe right in the middle that actually looks great and it doesn't have stripes at all and then the bell on the top of the Hurricane Cray looks beautiful, let's move on to the black.
I'm going to use a There are a lot of different top coats, so pay attention, we're starting with the Waverly matte varnish and again this was peeling off the paint just like it did with the gray, but it didn't look streaky. Then I tried the Waverly wax which is very runny and I was just using a lint free cloth to apply, I was seeing some little white lint while putting this on and buffing it with a clear section so I decided to try a shop towel as well . I have seen some. people use them before and that seemed to be working a little better.
I saw some blue parts in there, but not as much as the white, so I was a little happier because this wax was also lifting the paint, just like it did with the varnish. I'm going to use Jolie wax to seal the Jolie paint. They have a varnish now, but I don't have any and I'd like to try it, so maybe in a future video I'll just be applying this the same way. This way, apply the Waverly wax using a lint-free cloth to put it on and thenpolishing it with a clear section of mitoalla and also wanted to try shop towels versus lint free rags and they worked great just to add another top coat.
I wanted to see how the Dixie Belle clear coat looked over both paints so here are all the top coats, the dry plate is quite difficult to film but I think you can see the difference here. I think it all turned out pretty well, it just depends on the style you're going for. I like Jolie's side better because I like her. the way they look with wax is just a personal preference. I think the Waverly varnish is too shiny for me, but it dried smooth and didn't look streaky like the gray one, and I actually really liked the shape. the Dixie Belle looks in both paints, it looked great on the Jolie and on the Waverly it looked a little streaky, so I don't know if that would transfer well to a whole piece, well, the whites, I'm going to use the Rust-oleum matte clear top coat on top of rust-oleum paint.
You may notice that I am not painting on the top of the table. I lost that footage, but luckily I had more white paint on the back here, so that's what I'm using to show you the top coat, so I'm applying this with that Dixie Belle brush again and I really really liked the way it that was applied, it was not as thick as the Waverly, it reminded me a lot of Dixiebell spells. similar and it stayed very similar so I was pretty impressed with my first impression and then I just rinsed my brush and applied Dixie Belle on top of my Jolie paint since I don't have the Jolie varnish and again there.
There were no big problems putting this on it performed very similarly on this paint as it did on the Dixie Belle paint, so here are the dry whites and side by side they look very similar. I think the Jolie really can't be done. Say it on camera, but Jolie has less brush strokes because Rust-oleum is thicker, so the rest of the oleum will give you better coverage, but you will see more brush strokes, but both top coats dried flat and very smooth and did. I don't like stripes, so I was happy with both. I will say that I found white to be the most forgiving with any top coat, so I would definitely like to try them with more colors.
The last one is blue. I'm starting with the Waverly varnish. and I took the wrong foam brush that had black paint on it so I took a clean one and applied it and then I also put the wax on the bottom section of this which is the Waverly wax and then on the Annie Sloan side I took some Annie Sloan waxed and did that on top which really deepened the color much more than any of the other top coat products and then just for fun I picked up the dixiebell clear coat again and wanted to see what it would look like on top.
The bottom is fine, so here they are dry. The top layers worked quite well. The Waverly top layers over the pool. I think they work better with lighter colors, so you'll be safer using them on lighter colors. This color had the least coverage of all. the Waverly colors I think you would need three maybe four coats to completely cover your piece with the specific color on the other side on the Annie Sloan coverage with that paint was really great, the wax looks beautiful with it, it deepened it a little, but the Dixiebell clear coat also worked great but it didn't darken the color that much it just gave a nice streak free finish so I think you could use either one with this paint ok no that was a lot of information hopefully you can go back. and revisit the sections you really want to learn about.
I also created a very useful cheat sheet for you that I will link below. It has all the paints listed and all the top coats. How much they cost? comes in them and then what the cost per ounce is, so you can see it all in one place and make a decision on which paints will work best for you. Thank you all for joining me in this paint comparison today. Let me know your opinions. Everyone in the comments was very opinionated last time and I love hearing from everyone. If there is a specific painting you want me to cover in a future video, let me know I'll be back next week with another project.
